My family first moved to Colorado 22 years ago. Los Angeles was too expensive and it was difficult to find well-paying jobs and affordable housing. Colorado became our next dream place. Settling into a small town in the Front Range, my parents found hard jobs.
Growing up in this small town, I remember my parents working hard to get past the language barrier. My mom, especially, tried her best to ensure she knew all that she needed to know about like my parent-teacher meetings and extracurricular (课外的) activities. One of those extracurricular activities that I signed up for was football. At that age, football was cool and all, but I was more into playing Pokémon and other video games. Football didn’t draw me in.
Big football tournaments (联赛) would come around like the World Cup, the Copa América and the Gold Cup, and the Mexican National Team would play in these tournaments. I would sit there in our living room and unmindfully watch the games while my parents would go crazy with enthusiasm ( 热情). I would sit there and play my game. My dad would look over and tell me that I should be paying attention carefully to the game and that I should care more about whether Mexico would win the match than my video games.
Both of my parents’ workspaces were crowded (占满的) with other workers. My mom worked with people from all over Latin America. Everyone’s topic of choice at work would always turn to how their national football team was doing. It was a way to show pride in the countries where they had grown up.
I grew up loving football more and more. The more I learned about my Mexican roots (根), the more I tried to find ways to express pride in them in the United States.
4. Why did the author’s family move to Colorado
A. To make a better life.
B. To attend more activities.
C. To follow their football dream.
D. To receive a better education.
5. How did the author feel about football at first
A It was amazing. B. It was important.
C. It was uninteresting. D. It was difficult.
6. What would the author’s father do when watching football games
A. Remind the author to watch them carefully.
B. Play video games with the author.
C. Learn English in their living room.
D. Guess who would be the winner.
7. The author’s mom and her workmates talked about football in order to _________.
A. build a closer friendship
B. express their homesickness
C. share a common topic
D. show their pride in their motherlands
C
In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie wrote: “I have come to the conclusion that there is only one way to get the best of an argument — and that is to avoid it.” This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives — and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.
Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them. Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions — like, say, tennis tournaments. Pairs of opponents hit the ball back and forth until one winner comes out from all who entered. Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position, formulate (阐述) an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully. Assess its strength and weakness. Raise objections (异议) and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you better at it.
These tools can help you win every argument — not in the unhelpful sense of beating your opponents but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them. If we readjust our view of arguments — from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all gain respect and understanding from each other — then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.
8. What is the author’s attitude toward Carnegie’s understanding of argument
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Tolerant. D. Uncertain.
9. Why do many people try to avoid arguments
A. They lack debating skills. B. They may feel bad even if they win.
C. They fear being ignored. D. They are not confident in themselves.
10. What does the underlined phrase “spell out” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Defend. B. Explain. C. Conclude. D. Repeat.
11. What is the key to “winning” an argument according to the author
A. Sense of logic. B. Solid supporting evidence.
C. Proper manners. D. Understanding from both sides.
D
A company, called Mario Cucinella Architects, has made the House of Music, a solar-powered (太阳能的) building in Pieve di Cento that celebrates the town’s long-standing musical tradition. Designed to represent an orchestra (管弦乐队), the building is made up of nine small music rooms that connect to a central open space. The curved oak front not only helps to make sound louder like an instrument’s music box, but also ensures high levels of energy efficiency (效率).
Finished in 2017 after four years of planning and building, the House of Music of Pieve di Cento is located in the former Lamborghini (a famous Italian car company) production area that had been changed into a park. The recently completed building gets an advantage from a cycling path that connects the House of Music to the town center and beyond to an area to the south. There is also a wooden bench running around the building and creating resting places facing the park.
To prevent heat, cold, or noise from passing through the building, Mario Cucinella Architects used a special design for the House of Music. The flat roofs are topped with a series of curved and raised disks (圆盘) that help make unwanted sunlight change its direction and are engineered to bring more natural air into the building. The energy-efficient design was influenced by the architects’ (建筑师的) study of the site.
The nine music rooms open up to a central outdoor space that serves as a meeting area. The architects noted, “The House of Music’s outside lighting makes it a comforting place that encourages people to continue to do musical activities after the earthquake that shook the area in 2012.”
12. What was the purpose of building the House of Music
A. To praise the town’s musical tradition.
B. To remember a famous local musician.
C. To attract people outside the town to visit.
D. To tell people about the importance of music.
13. What do we know about the House of Music
A. It started to be built in 2017.
B. It is located in the town center.
C. It is supported by a famous car producer.
D. It is connected with other areas by a cycling path.
14. The architects designed the lighting mainly in order to ______.
A encourage people to keep up their musical activities
B. warn people of the danger of earthquakes
C. make the building noticeable and attractive
D. make full use of energy
15. What is the best title of this passage
A. A solar-powered orchestra.
B. The advantages of solar-powered buildings.
C. A solar-powered House of Music.
D. The future of solar-powered buildings.

Winter break was approaching, and all Scott wanted to do was go snowboarding. Unfortunately, Scott's parents had different plans. They had booked a weeklong tropical cruise (热带船游). Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend's house so he could snowboard every day at the local mountain. His parents didn't want to hear anything of it. He kept debating them about the topic, but they would not change their minds. Family time was important to them, and it was tradition that they spend winter break together.
The week of the cruise arrived, and Scott continued to mumble (咕哝) his complaints as he and his family left their house to head south. Scott's dad told him that he would only make the vacation worse for himself if he didn't change his attitude and open his mind to a new experience. Scott still couldn't stop thinking about all of the snow he was leaving behind.
When they arrived at the port to board the ship, Scott had a hard time admitting that he was actually impressed with the size of the ship. He had seen the brochures but seeing the ship in person was a whole different animal. Then he remembered that the brochure said something about a surfing pool. Maybe surfing would be somewhat like snowboarding. After all, it involved riding a board.
Scott climbed aboard the ship with his parents, and then they walked around to check everything out. He couldn't believe how fancy the accommodations were. The dining room looked like a royal hall; the game room had all of his favorite games; the ship's deck (甲板) had several different swimming pools for different purposes. Then Scott saw the surfing pool. It was incredible. It wasn't a big pool, but it had big waves, and the young man who was demonstrating how to ride the waves made it look like a ton of fun.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Scott asked his parents if he could try surfing.

3 Which place may have a disadvantage for ski lovers
A. Kitzbühel. B. Val Gardena. C. Alpbach. D. Stowe.
【答案】1. D 2. C 3. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是应用文。文章主要介绍4个最好的滑雪胜地。
【1题详解】
细节理解题。根据Kitzbühel, Austria部分“Kitzbühel also attracts a host of festive fans with its fairy lights, and performances of jazz bands”(基茨比厄尔的彩灯,以及爵士乐队的表演,吸引了不少节日爱好者。)可知,游客们可以在基茨比厄尔欣赏现场的音乐节目。故选D。
【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据Val Gardena, Italy部分“The three towns that make up Val Gardena—busy Ortisei, peaceful Santa Cristina and the higher Selva—traditionally go big on the festive season, combining their Italian, Austrian and Ladin heritage”(瓦尔加德纳由三个城镇组成,分别是繁忙的奥蒂塞、平静的圣克里斯蒂娜和较高的塞尔瓦。传统上,这三个城镇在节日期间会大张旗鼓,将意大利、奥地利和拉登的传统融合在一起。)可知,瓦尔加德纳吸引游客的应该是它多样的文化。故选C。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据Alpbach, Austria部分“Low at 1,000 meters, it may not always have snow on the ground.”(在海拔1000米的地方,地面上不一定总有雪。)可知,在阿尔卑巴克,因为是在海拔1000米的地方,地面上不一定总有雪,所以对滑雪爱好者来说这是个不足之处。故选C。

C Proper manners. D. Understanding from both sides.

第二节(满分 25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】Scott asked his parents if he could try surfing. They said, "Of course. And much to Scott's surprise, they wanted to try surfing too. When Scott and his parents had their swim suits on, Scott's dad went first and only lasted about five seconds before he wiped out. Then it was his mom's turn. She actually made it longer than his dad did. When it was Scott's turn, he was excited but a little bit nervous. He hopped on the board and took a stance similar to his snowboarding stance. Then the waves started. It felt similar to snowboarding but different at the same time. On his first ride, Scott rode for almost 30 seconds before wiping out.He was crazy about it though.
Gradually, Scott began to love the cruise. He got to know the people who often surfed there quite well. By the time the weeklong cruise was over, Scott had new friends he planned to keep in touch. Scott is the brave and lucky one since only eight percent of the experiencer or so really fell in love with it among a lot of the passengers who tried surfing the first day of the cruise. With a new hobby, and great memories, he apologized to his parents for earliest moaning and groaning and told them it was his best vacation ever.
