You could ask a friend or family member to help add to your list. 39 That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through. In fact, don’t wait until you’ve made a mistake to try this—it’s a great way to boost self-confidence at any time.
A. A little self-forgiveness also goes a long way.
B. Now list all the characteristics you like about yourself.
C. They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise.

E. It doesn’t mean you have to ignore what’s happened or forget it.
F. Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down.
G. Whatever the mistake, remember it isn’t a fixed aspect of your personality.
根据空后内容“That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through.(这样,你们就可以交换意见,谈谈是什么让你们每个人都与众不同,以及你们个性中闪光的方面。)” C“They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise.(他们甚至可能想试一试做练习。)”符合语境,C项中的“they”与空前的“You could ask a friend or family member to help add to your list.(你可以让朋友或家人帮你增加你的列表内容。)”中的“a friend or family member”保持一致,同时选项C和下文“In fact, don’t wait until you’ve made a mistake to try this—it’s a great way to boost self-confidence at any time.(事实上,不要等到你犯了错误才去尝试这个——这是一个在任何时候都能增强自信的好方法。)”

Making Requests
39 . In Portugal, this would be a serious mistake, because it shows the chef that you don’t like their seasoning skills. Similarly, in Italy, never ask for extra cheese to add to your food.
Some of these cultural dining etiquette rules may seem random and strange, but they are important in various countries. 40 , the more comfortable you’ll begin to feel with its foreign cultural practices.
A. The more friends you make in your lifetime
B. The more time you spend in any given country
C. Mexicans consider it inappropriate to eat with utensils
D. Don’t get caught making an embarrassing mistake at a restaurant
E. It’s a good sign for the chef if you make a mess around your plate
F. Never stick them upright in your food or cross them as you use them
G. It may seem like a simple request to ask for salt and pepper at a meal
G。 根据下文“In Portugal, this would be a serious mistake, because it shows the chef that you don’t like their seasoning skills.”可知,G项(吃饭时要盐和胡椒看似一个简单的请求)符合此处语境,下文中的代词this指的就是此项中的“to ask for salt and pepper at a meal”。
B。根据下文“the more comfortable you’ll begin to feel with its foreign cultural practices”可推知,此处指在一个国家待得越久,就会越习惯当地习俗,且此处是“the+比较级...,the+比较级...” 且下文的代词its指的就是该项中的any given country。
Recently, people have begun studying the connection between the natural world and healing (治愈). 38 In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery. It turns out that just looking at green, growing things can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and put people into a better mood (情绪). Greenery is good for us. Hospital patients who see tree branches out their window are likely to recover at a faster rate than patients who see buildings or sky instead. 39 It gives us a great feeling of peace.
A. Fresh air cleans our lungs.
B. So what are you waiting for
C. Being in nature refreshes us.
D. Another side benefit of getting fresh air is sunlight.
E. But is fresh air really as good for you as your mother always said
F. Just as importantly, we tend to associate fresh air with health care.
G. All across the country, recovery centers have begun building Healing Gardens.
Over the years, there have been a number of different techniques to help designers approach this important point. 37 , they can get a little complex. But good news is that there’re really only three kinds of decisions you need to make about color in your home: the small ones, the medium ones, and the large ones.
38 . They’re the little spots of color like throw pillows, mirrors and baskets that most of us use to add visual interest to our rooms. Less tiring than painting your walls and less expensive than buying a colorful sofa, small color choices bring with them the significant benefit of being easily changeable. Medium color choices are generally furniture pieces such as sofas, dinner tables or bookshelves. 39 . They require a bigger commitment than smaller ones, and they have a more powerful effect on the feeling of a space.
A.While all of them are useful
B.Whatever you're looking for
C.If you're experimenting with a color
D.Small color choices are the ones we're most familiar with
E.It's not really a good idea to use too many small color pieces
F.So it pays to be sure, because you want to get it right the first time
G.Color choices in this range are a step up from the small ones in two major ways
A。 空格后的they指代上文中的techniques,且与A项中的all of them相呼应,代入A项“尽管它们都很有用”,符合语境。
第二段最后一句出现了"the small ones, the medium ones, and the large ones",第三段提到了"small color choices",由此可知空处所在段主要在讲"the small ones",故选D。
G。 第四段最后一句提到了"a bigger commitment than smaller ones"和"a more powerful effect"可知,此处是和上文中的"small color choices"作对比,故选G。

Tricks To Becoming A Patient Person
Here’s a riddle: What do traffic jams, long lines and waiting for a vacation to start all have in common There’s one answer. 36 .
In the Digital Age, we’re used to having what we need immediately and right at our fingertips. However, research suggests that if we practiced patience, we’d be a whole lot better off. Here are several tricks.
●Practice gratitude (感激)
Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: Research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic. 37 . “Showing thankfulness can foster self-control,” said Ye Li, researcher at the University of California.
● Make yourself wait
Instant gratification (满足) may seem like the most “feel good” option at the time, but psychology research suggests waiting for things actually makes us happier in the long run. And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practice. 38 . Put off watching your favorite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. You’ll soon find that the more patience you practice, the more you start to apply it to other, more annoying situations.
● 39 .
So many of us have the belief that being comfortable is the only state we will tolerate, and when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances. You should learn to say to yourself, “ 40 .” You’ll then gradually become more patient.
A. Find your causes
B. Start with small tasks
C. Accept the uncomfortable
D. All this adds up to a state of hurry
E. It can also help us practice more patience
F. This is merely uncomfortable, not intolerable
G. They’re all situations where we could use a little extra patience
G 37. E 38. B 39. C 40. F
36.根据上文“Here’s a riddle: What do traffic jams, long lines and waiting for a vacation to start all have in common There’s one answer. (这里有一个谜语:交通堵塞、排长队和等待假期开始有什么共同之处?答案只有一个)”可知,本句说明上文谜语的答案,结合“交通堵塞、排长队和等待假期”这些情况可知都需要耐心。故G选项“在这些情况下,我们都需要一点额外的耐心”符合语境,故选G。
37.根据上文“Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: Research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic.(感恩有很多好处:研究表明,感恩让我们更快乐,压力更小,甚至更乐观)”以及后文““Showing thankfulness can foster self-control,” said Ye Li, researcher at the University of California. (加州大学的研究员叶丽说:“表达感激可以培养自我控制能力。”)”可知,上文提到了感恩的诸多好处,可知本句继续说明感恩的好处:它还可以帮助我们练习更多的耐心。E选项中It指代上文Thankfulness。故E选项“它还可以帮助我们练习更多的耐心”符合语境,故选E。
38.根据上文“And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practice. (我们养成等待习惯的唯一方法就是练习)”以及后文“Put off watching your favorite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. (把你最喜欢的节目推迟到周末再看,或者多等10分钟再去吃蛋糕)”可知,后文列举的事情都是日常的小事,说明要从小事开始练习等待,故B选项“从小任务开始”符合语境,故选B。
39.根据本段内容“So many of us have the belief that being comfortable is the only state we will tolerate, and when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances. (我们中的许多人都认为舒适是我们唯一能容忍的状态,当我们经历舒适区之外的事情时,我们会对环境失去耐心)”可知,本段提到了舒适是我们唯一能容忍的状态,结合前文的小标题都是祈使句可知,本段的主旨与接受不舒适相关,C选项中uncomfortable对应后文comfortable。故C选项“接受不舒服”符合语境,故选C。
40.根据上文“You should learn to say to yourself (你应该学会对自己说……)”以及后文“You’ll then gradually become more patient. (然后你会逐渐变得更有耐心)”结合本段主要说明的是不舒服的状态,可知,本句为对自己所说的话与接受不舒服相关,故F选项“这仅仅是不舒服,而不是无法忍受”符合语境,故选F。

· 39

Simply keeping a diary that keeps track of friends’ birthdays and other important dates will make sure nothing slips by you.

F. It is easy to have a sense of connectedness through social media
G. You may be the friend who left or the one who was left behind
36-40 DBGAF
36. D。上文“With busy schedules, squeezing in phone calls can be a challenge.”(平日繁忙,很难抽出时间打电话。)
37. B。上文“Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both.”(确保你已经与你的朋友沟通过,了解你们彼此希望联系的次数,以及哪种沟通方式最适合你们两人。)提到异地朋友之间要商量沟通方式,B项“可以通过写信补偿”提出了其中一种沟通方式:写信,下文“There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat.”(除了不断的文字交流,还有其他方式,比如发语音或者组建群聊。)
38. G。下文“The friend who is remaining”(留下来的朋友)和“The one in the new environment”(在新环境中的那个)提到朋友的两个不同处境,G项“你可能是朋友中离开的那一方,也可能是被留下的那一方”指出了异地友谊中分为离开的一方和留下的一方,其中“the friend who left”和“the one who was left behind”分别对应下文“The one in the new environment”和“The friend who is remaining”,所以G项符合题意。故选G。
39. A。 下文“Anniversaries and birthdays carry even more weight in long-distance friendships.”(周年纪念日和生日对于异地友谊而言是非常重要的。) 故选A。
40. F。设空处所在句子的后半句“but long-distance friendships — even close ones — may require more conscious effort to sustain.”(但是异地友谊——甚至是关系亲密的友谊——可能需要更加自觉地去维系。)
Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym, ” while another read: “ 36 ” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition.
So, how do you find a workout partner
First of all, decide what you want from that person. 37 Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner.
You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. 38 If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.
My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. 39
You and your partner will probably have different skills. 40 Over time, both of you will benefit — your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.
A. Your first meeting may be a little awkward.
B. A workout partner usually needs to live close by.
C. You’ll work harder if you train with someone else.
D. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport
E. How can you write a good “seeking training partner” notice
F. Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other.
G. Any notice for a training partner should include such information.
C37. D38. B39. G40. F
36. C。根据前文“Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partne.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,”(《健身杂志》最近刊登了一篇题为《感谢健身伙伴的五个理由》的文章。一个理由是:“如果你知道有人在健身房等你,你就会去锻炼。”)”可知,这里陈述另一个和别人一起锻炼的理由。所以选择项C“You'll work harder if you train with someone else.(如果你和别人一起训练,你会更努力。)”
37. D。根据前文“First of all, decide what you want from that person. (首先,决定你想从那个人身上得到什么。)”和后文“Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility (或者你只是想要身体健康,能够移动的力量和灵活性 )”可知,这里是一个问句,反问自己结伴锻炼的目的。 D“Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport (你想在你最喜欢的运动项目上成为更好的运动员吗 )”符合上下文语境。故选D。
38. B。根据前文“You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but probably won't result in a useful response. (你可能会考虑在社交媒体上发布你想要的东西,但可能不会得到有用的回应。)”和后文“If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.(如果你打算在健身房锻炼,那个人一定是同一个健身房的。)” B“A workout partner usually needs to live close by. (锻炼伙伴通常需要住在附近。)”符合上下文语境。故选B。
39. G。根据前文“My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. (我的搭档把她的要求贴在了当地公园的布告栏上。她的注意事项包括她想要做什么样的锻炼,每周多少天,每次培训要花多少小时,以及她的年龄。它还列出了她最喜欢的运动和活动,并提供了她的电话号码。)”可知,本段作者以自己的锻炼伙伴为例,说明寻找锻炼伙伴布告所要包括的信息。所以选择项G“Any notice for a training partner should include such information. (任何锻炼伙伴的布告都应包括这些信息。)”符合上下文语境。故选G。
40. F。根据前文“You and your partner will probably have different skills. (你和你的伴侣可能有不同的技能。)”和后文“Over time, both of you will benefit -- your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit.(久而久之,你们双方都会受益——你的伴侣会举起更多的重量,你也会变得更健康。)” F“Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other. (接受你们的不同,学会彼此合作。)”符合上下文语境。故选F。

1.(2023上·福建泉州·高三福建省德化第一中学校联考阶段练习)
How to Make and Keep a New Year’s Resolution
Are you making a resolution in the New Year You’ll give yourself your best shot at success if your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound).
Specific. Your resolution should be absolutely clear. Making a concrete goal is really important rather than just vaguely(含糊地) saying “I want to lose weight.” You want to have a goal: How much weight do you want to lose and at what time interval 1
Measurable. This may seem obvious if your goal is a fitness related one, but it’s also important if you’re trying to cut back on something, too. If, for example, you want to stop biting your nails, take pictures of your nails over time so you can track your progress in how those nails grow back out. 2
Achievable. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big stretch goals. 3 So, for example, deciding to save enough money to retire in five years when you’re 30 years old is probably not realistic, but saving an extra $100 a month may be.
Relevant. 4 If you do it out of a sense of self-hate or a strong passion in that moment, it doesn’t usually last long. But if you build up a process where you’re thinking harder about what’s good for you, then you have a fighting chance.
Time-bound. Like “achievable”, the timeline toward reaching your goal should be realistic, too. That means giving yourself enough time to do it with lots of smaller goals set up along the way. 5
If you’re building a habit, you’re planning for the next decade, not the next couple of months.
A.Five pounds in the next two months—that’s going to be more effective.
B.Is this a goal that really matters to you, and are you making it for the right reasons
C.Logging progress into a journal or making notes in an app can strengthen the progress.
D.Do you have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution
E.Focus on these small wins so you can make gradual progress.
F.But trying to take too big a step too fast can leave you disappointed.
G.It’s a resolution based on someone else’s intention.
1.A 2.C 3.F 4.B 5.E
1.前文“You want to have a goal: How much weight do you want to lose and at what time interval (你想有一个目标:你想减多少体重,以多少时间间隔?)” 故选A。
2.前文“If, for example, you want to stop biting your nails, take pictures of your nails over time so you can track your progress in how those nails grow back out.(例如,如果你想停止咬指甲,随着时间的推移给你的指甲拍照,这样你就可以跟踪你的指甲长出来的进程。)”
根据前文“This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big stretch goals.(这并不意味着你不能有远大的目标。)”
后文“If you do it out of a sense of self-hate or a strong passion in that moment, it doesn’t usually last long. But if you build up a process where you’re thinking harder about what’s good for you, then you have a fighting chance.(如果你在那一刻出于自我憎恨或强烈的激情而这样做,通常不会持续太久。但是,如果你建立了一个更加努力地思考什么对你有利的过程,那么你就有了战斗的机会。)”可知,制订的目标要对自己重要,并且要出于正确的理由,B项“这是一个对你来说真正重要的目标吗?你制订这个目标的理由是正确的吗?”符合题意。故选B。
5.前文“That means giving yourself enough time to do it with lots of smaller goals set up along the way.(这意味着给自己足够的时间去做,一路上设定很多小目标)”讲述了要设定小的目标,E项“专注于这些小胜利,这样你才能逐步进步。”

There’s a reason why so many people love running early in the morning. 6 Not only do you begin your day more relaxed and refreshed, but you’ve already started things of with an accomplishment. If you think you’re ready to take advantage of the benefits of a morning run, here are five suggestions from the professionals.
●Find a friend, and be gentle with yourself
Finding a partner to run with will give you someone to be responsible for, and make it much harder to blow off the run. It’s also important to remember that this is a process, and you can’t expect to do it perfectly from the beginning. 7 “Once you get into the habit, it becomes natural and actually jump starts your day,” says Sheri Piers, top American finisher at the 2012 Boston Marathon.
●Embrace the movement
“The first few steps or blocks will be tough in the morning. They always are,” says Dr. Jordan Metzl, who has over 32 marathon finishes under his belt. With a practice of more than 20, 000 patients, Metzl’s days are jam-packed, so early morning runs are a must. 8 “Sometimes you have to just do it, and remember that the motivation will come later.” he says.
●Stay warm
9 “If I go to bed in my sports wear, all I need to do is throw on the outer layers and head out the door. At least that takes away some of the inconvenience,” says Tina Muir, a half-marathoner. She also leaves her alarm on the other side of the room to help push herself up.
● 10
“I view waking up early like tearing off a Band-Aid,” says Michele Gonzalez, a running coach. “It’s gonna hurt for a bit.” Her advice is relatively simple. “You just have to set the alarm early and start doing it,” she says. “After a few days, you’ll be tired earlier at night and will start going to bed earlier. This makes the early alarm feel a bit more manageable.”
A.It has major benefits.
B.Have a training plan.
C.Make peace with the pain.
D.It’s just like warming up a car in the winter.
E.Even if you have a setback or two, keep at it.
F.Still, he knows how hard it can be to get motivated.
G.The worst part is getting changed in the cold air especially in winter.
6.A 7.E 8.F 9.G 10.C
6.上文“There’s a reason why so many people love running early in the morning.(很多人喜欢在清晨跑步是有原因的)”提到,很多人喜欢在清晨跑步是有原因的,空处应是接着说明原因,即清晨跑步的好处,A项“它有很大的好处”符合语境,下文“Not only do you begin your day more relaxed and refreshed, but you’ve already started things of with an accomplishment.(这样你不仅能更轻松、更精神地开始新的一天,而且你已经以一种成就感开始了新的一天)”是具体说明清晨跑步的好处,故选A。
7.根据上文“It’s also important to remember that this is a process, and you can’t expect to do it perfectly from the beginning.(同样重要的是要记住,这是一个过程,你不能指望从一开始就做到完美)”可知,清晨跑步是一个过程,不会一开始就能做到完美,由此可知,这个过程中会遇到一些挫折、失败等,E项“即使你遭遇了一两次挫折,也要坚持下去”符合语境,与下文“Once you get into the habit, it becomes natural and actually jump starts your day(一旦你养成了跑步的习惯,它就会自然而然地开始你的一天)”衔接自然,跑步过程中遇到挫折也要坚持下去,一旦养成习惯就会自然而然地开始你的一天,故选E。
8.根据上文“The first few steps or blocks will be tough in the morning.(早上刚开始的几步或几个街区会很艰难)”和下文“‘Sometimes you have to just do it, and remember that the motivation will come later.’ he says.(‘有时候你必须去做,并记住动力会在后面出现。’他说)”可知,本段是说对于Jordan Metzl医生来说获得清晨跑步的动力很困难,F项“不过,他知道获得动力有多难”符合语境,与上文“so early morning runs are a must(所以早上跑步是必须的)”形成转折关系,故选F。
9.根据本段小标题“Stay warm(保持暖和)”和下文“If I go to bed in my sports wear, all I need to do is throw on the outer layers and head out the door.(如果我穿着运动服上床睡觉,我所需要做的就是穿上外套,然后出门)”可知,本段是说冬天的穿衣保暖问题,G项“最糟糕的是在寒冷的空气中换衣服,尤其是在冬天”符合语境,故选G。
10.根据下文“‘I view waking up early like tearing off a Band-Aid,’ says Michele Gonzalez, a running coach. ‘It’s gonna hurt for a bit.’ Her advice is relatively simple. ‘You just have to set the alarm early and start doing it,’ she says.(跑步教练Michele Gonzalez说:‘我认为早起就像撕掉创可贴一样。’‘会疼一段时间。’她的建议相对简单。她说:‘你只需要早设闹钟,然后开始做。’)”可知,本段是说早起很痛苦,跑步教练Michele Gonzalez建议设定闹钟,然后开始做,C项“与痛苦和平相处”适合作为段落小标题,故选C。

Kindness May Keep You Healthy
If you are driving in the United States, you may see a common bumper (汽车保险杠) sticker on passing vehicles that reads: 11 The saying is meant to urge people to behave in a gentle, caring, and helpful way towards others without thinking or planning ahead.
12 In one experiment, Brian are, an anthropologist (人类学家) at Duke University, asked a group of people to perform three acts of generosity for other individuals each week. These acts could be small, like opening a door for someone. The people who were caring, gentle and friendly towards others reported experiencing contentment, satisfaction and happiness.
However, being kind is not just emotionally beneficial. Lyubomirsky studied a group of people with the disease Multiple Sclerosis (多发性硬化). 13 Her research also pointed out that people showing kindness to others had less inflammation (炎症) in their bodies. And in other studies, Lyubomirsky said more anti-viral genes were found in people who extended a helping hand to other people
14 In one study, researchers gave people a list of values — such as kindness, creativity, ambition, tradition, security, seeking social justice, and seeking power. When asked to pick the most important, kindness won.
“The basic reason why people are kind,” Oliver Curry, explained, the research director at Kind-lab that is a non-profit organization, “is that we are social animals. Kindness is as much a part of us as our anger, grief or desire.” 15
A.Perform random acts of kindness
B.Acts of kindness are very powerful
C.In other words, we are designed to be kind.
D.She found that they felt better physically when helping others.
E.Research shows that doing kind things can make us feel better
F.He found that being kind makes people feel better emotionally,
G.Other research has shown that many people prize kindness above other values

Gesturing is powerful and important to our conversations. The challenge is to use it to good effect. Here are some tips that can help you take advantage of gesturing.
Encourage gesturing in your children, students and anyone else you are trying to teach. 16 Gesturing while learning will also make them more likely to solve the same problem in a new way. That is important because being able to generalize what we learn is essential to acquiring new knowledge.
17 While learning to talk, children typically convey sentence-like meanings in a combination of gesture and speech before using words alone -- for example, pointing at a box and saying “open”. If a child fails to produce these gesture-word combinations, it may be a sign that their spoken language development will be delayed, allowing you to intervene and help.
Pay attention to other people’s gestures. These offer a window into the speakers’ thoughts. These thoughts are often at the cutting-edge of their knowledge or address issues that are uppermost in their minds. 18
Be careful that your gestures say what you want them to. Those you talk to will pay attention to your gestures, so choose them wisely. 19 And if you are questioning someone, be aware that a gesture may unintentionally influence them to tell you what you want to hear rather than give their own fair answer.
Gesture more when you speak. It will help you learn and understand more. If you gesture while talking, you will remember more of what you have said. 20 This can give you a way of seeing what others are thinking but not saying.
A.Observe the gesturing of kids.
B.Remember, gestures can reveal what you might want to hide.
C.This will help them understand the material you are conveying.
D.Whether we realize it or not, gestures are a part of our communication.
E.What’s more, when you gesture, the people around you tend to do so too.
F.Noticing and responding to such gestures will help you understand their thoughts.
G.Knowing how to use gestures effectively can make you a better communicator.
16.C 17.A 18.F 19.B 20.E
16.上文“Encourage gesturing in your children, students and anyone else you are trying to teach.”(鼓励你的孩子、学生和任何你想教的人做手势。)说明了一种做法,即鼓励他人使用手势,C项“This will help them understand the material you are conveying.”(这将有助于他们理解你所传达的材料。)衔接上文,说明该做法的好处,其中“them”指代“children, students and anyone else you are trying to teach”,衔接恰当。故选C项。
17.下文“While learning to talk, children typically convey sentence-like meanings in a combination of gesture and speech before using words alone”(在学习说话的过程中,孩子们通常在单独使用单词之前,通过手势和语言的结合来传达句子式的意思。)说明手势对于孩子们学习说话的重要性,A项“Observe the gesturing of kids.”(观察孩子们的手势。) 故选A项。
18.上文“These offer a window into the speakers’ thoughts. These thoughts are often at the cutting-edge of their knowledge or address issues that are uppermost in their minds.”(这些提供了一个了解说话者思想的窗口。 说明关注别人手势有助于了解其想法,F项“Noticing and responding to such gestures will help you understand their thoughts.”(注意并回应这些手势将帮助你理解他们的想法。)

How to Be a Good Friend
Being a good friend isn’t always easy. As the years pass, some people will stay by your side, but many won’t. And you’ll realize that each friendship you keep is priceless. Of course, to have a good friend, you should remember the following tips:
21
Don’t make a promise that you can’t keep. Nobody’s perfect, and it’s okay if you skip out on a promise occasionally, but don’t make it a regular thing.
Be dependable.
Your friend will need you for support, especially in hard times. 22
Apologize when you’ve made a mistake.
If you want your friends to trust you, then you can’t act like you’re perfect. 23 Though your friends won’t be happy that you made a mistake, they’ll be very pleased if you admit it instead of just pretending that nothing is wrong.
Be honest.
If you want to be a good friend and to have people trust you, then you have to be honest about your feelings and about how you feel about your friendship. If you’re honest about how you feel, that will make your friends more likely to open up to you. 24
Be loyal.
25 Just do it as you’d expect your friend to do for you. Don’t discuss your friend behind his or her back, and don’t n spread rumors.
A.Keep your promises.
B.Take an interest in his/her hobby.
C.If you know you’ve made a mistake, just say sorry.
D.If your friend hurts you. don’t be afraid to talk about it.
E.If your friend tells you a secret, keep it and don’t talk about it with anyone else.
F.It’s hard to rely on a person who doesn’t behave in a consistent and trustworthy way.
G.All the same, you don’t always have to agree with him just because he is your friend.
21.A 22.F 23.C 24.D 25.E
根据空后一句“Don’t make a promise that you can’t keep.”(不要许下你不能遵守的诺言。) 故选A。
dependable与F项中的rely on呼应。故选F。
3.根据本段小标题“Apologize when you’ve made a mistake.”(当你犯了错误的时候就道歉。)可知,犯错要敢于道歉,再由空后一句“Though your friends won’t be happy that you made a mistake, they’ll be very pleased if you admit it instead of just pretending that nothing is wrong.”(虽然你的朋友不会因为你犯了错而高兴,但如果你承认而不是假装什么都没有发生,他们会很高兴的。)
空后一句“Just do it as you’d expect your friend to do for you.”(就像你希望你的朋友为你做的那样去做。)

A vivid imagination is more than dreaming up stories about dinosaurs and pirates (海盗). It is the origin of creativity and innovation. Working on your powers of imagination will help you think outside the box — a useful skill at both school and work. 26
Turn off the TV. Watching television programs is a form of passive participation. It is good for relaxing after a hard day. 27 Instead of watching others on TV, take up a hobby that allows you to create your own story.
28 Finding your imagination involves shutting stimulation out. Tonight, turn off your phone and television and sit for a while. See what comes to your mind, and come up with alternative (可替代的) ways to spend your time. If you find this difficult, try yoga to help you learn to turn off the world.
Read creative literature and watch creative films. If you normally read detective thrillers, try reading a fantasy novel. 29 Look for experimental or independent films that challenge typical ways of presentation. Try to branch out not only into the content you interact with, but the way the content is presented.
Try visual art forms. You don’t have to intend to sell your works to enjoy the visual arts. Take a pottery (陶艺) or baking class to find out ways you can use your imagination to create physical objects. You can find places in your home to appreciate them, or simply throw them away. 30
A.Try to do nothing.
B.The same applies to films.
C.Inspire your imagination by killing time,
D.This allows yourself a free artistic expression.
E.Some people are more naturally imaginative than others.
F.However, it is not helpful in improving your imagination.
G.There are some ways that can help improve your imagination.
26.G 27.F 28.A 29.B 30.D
26.根据前文“A vivid imagination is more than dreaming up stories about dinosaurs and pirates (海盗). It is the origin of creativity and innovation. Working on your powers of imagination will help you think outside the box — a useful skill at both school and work.(生动的想象力不仅仅是幻想恐龙和海盗的故事。它是创造力和创新的源泉。发挥你的想象力会帮助你跳出思维定式——这在学校和工作中都是一项有用的技能)”可知,此处讲述想象力的重要性,结合后文内容是提供想象力的策略,所以G项“There are some ways that can help improve your imagination.(有一些方法可以帮助提高你的想象力)”承接上文,并起到总领下文的作用。故选G项。
27.根据本段主题“Turn off the TV.(关掉电视)”可知,本段主要讲述了不要看电视,根据前文“Watching television programs is a form of passive participation. It is good for relaxing after a hard day.(看电视节目是一种被动参与的形式。辛苦了一天之后,这是很好的放松方式)”结合本段主题可推知,看电视是很好的放松方式,但是不利于提高想象力符合文章主题,后文应是表转折,所以F项“However, it is not helpful in improving your imagination.(然而,这对提高你的想象力没有帮助)”符合文意。故选F项。
28.分析设空,位于段首,应是本段主题句,根据后文“Finding your imagination involves shutting stimulation out. Tonight, turn off your phone and television and sit for a while. See what comes to your mind, and come up with alternative (可替代的) ways to spend your time. If you find this difficult, try yoga to help you learn to turn off the world.(找到你的想象力需要将刺激拒之门外。今晚,关掉你的手机和电视,坐一会儿。看看你的脑海里浮现了什么,然后想出其他的方式来打发时间。如果你觉得这很难,试试瑜伽来帮助你学会关闭这个世界)”可知,本段讲述了试着什么都不做,去放空自己来提高想象力,所以A项“Try to do nothing.(试着什么都不做)”为本段主题句。故选A项。
29.根据前文“Read creative literature and watch creative films. If you normally read detective thrillers, try reading a fantasy novel.(阅读有创意的文学作品,观看有创意的电影。
You don’t have to intend to sell your works to enjoy the visual arts. Take a pottery (陶艺) or baking class to find out ways you can use your imagination to create physical objects. You can find places in your home to appreciate them, or simply throw them away.(尝试视觉艺术形式。你不必打算出售你的作品来享受视觉艺术。参加一个陶艺或烘焙班,找出运用你的想象力创造实物的方法。你可以在家里找个地方欣赏它们,或者干脆把它们扔掉)”可知,D项“This allows yourself a free artistic expression.(这给了你一个自由的艺术表达)”符合本段主题,是对前文的总结。故选D项。

With our lives becoming increasingly busy and stressful, it’s easy to forget to check in on our mental well-being and to neglect our emotional health needs. So cultivating “self-compassion” is very important. 31
We’re humans, not machines, and can’t be completely together all the time. 32 This helps us recognise the early warning signs that something is wrong like tearfulness and feeling overwhelmed.
We can then take action to improve our mental balance, which in turn can help us better cope with the challenges life throws at us.
Doing just one small positive thing each day can make a big difference and be enough to restore a sense of balance. 33 Or going for a walk in the fresh air and feeling the warmth of the sun. Or walking the dog.
Changing the way we tackle negative thinking also helps a lot. One technique is to stick to the facts about a particular situation rather than listening to negative thoughts and anxieties. So we can ask questions like: Is this true 34 Does this thinking benefit me or hinder me Could I see it another way
35 When we struggle to get to sleep, our minds can start to fill with anxious thoughts that make it even harder to doze off. Having a cool environment, not drinking caffeine past midday or banning mobile phones from the bedroom could be the changes you need.
A.How you set up your day
B.Why am I seeing it like that
C.Being a big advocate for helping others.
D.Having good-quality sleep can improve mental health.
E.Here are small but important steps that can ease the burden.
F.It might be simply like dancing around the house to expel nervous energy.
G.But we can monitor our mood and emotions to know what our “normal” is and if it’s in need of a boost.
31.E 32.G 33.F 34.B 35.D
31.根据前文“With our lives becoming increasingly busy and stressful, it’s easy to forget to check in on our mental well-being and to neglect our emotional health needs. So cultivating “self-compassion” is very important.(随着我们的生活变得越来越忙碌和紧张,我们很容易忘记检查我们的精神健康,忽视我们的情感健康需求。所以培养“自我同情”是非常重要的)”可知,此处强调的是培养“自我同情”很重要。结合下文提到的几个培养“自我同情”的方法推知,空处指出有培养“自我同情”的方法。E选项“Here are small but important steps that can ease the burden.(这里有一些小而重要的步骤可以减轻你的负担)”承上启下,引出培养“自我同情”的方法。故选E。
32.根据前文“We’re humans, not machines, and can’t be completely together all the time. (我们是人类,而不是机器,无法一直保持完美状态)”以及后文的“This helps us recognise the early warning signs that something is wrong like tearfulness and feeling overwhelmed.(这有助于我们识别出一些问题的早期预警信号,比如流泪和感到不知所措)”可知,我们是人类,而不是机器,无法一直保持完美状态,因此在生活中容易出现一些“不正常”的状况,但我们可以对自己进行监控,识别一些早期预警。G选项“But we can monitor our mood and emotions to know what our “normal” is and if it’s in need of a boost.( 但我们可以监控我们的情绪和情绪,知道我们的“正常”是什么,以及它是否需要提升)”承接前文,指出我们可以监控情绪,知道自己“正常”状况是什么,因此进行提升,同时后文中的this指代前文的we can monitor our mood and emotions,形成呼应,符合语境。故选G。
33.根据后文的“Or going for a walk in the fresh air and feeling the warmth of the sun. Or walking the dog.(或者在新鲜空气中散步,感受阳光的温暖。或者遛狗)”可知,通过生活中的一些积极小事如散步、感受阳光或者遛狗等,可以修复心理的平衡感;设空处内容应该与此构成并列。F选项“It might be simply like dancing around the house to expel nervous energy.(它可能只是像在房子周围跳舞,以排出紧张的能量)”与下文构成并列,指出如在房子周围跳舞这样的小事同样可以修复内心的平衡感即调节自己,符合语境。故选F。
34.根据前文“So we can ask questions like: Is this true (所以我们可以问这样的问题:这是真的吗?)”以及后文的“Does this thinking benefit me or hinder me Could I see it another way (这种想法对我有益还是有害?我能换个角度看吗?)”可知,此处通过询问各种问题来明确自己的情况坚定事实,以此来改变消极思维方式。B选项“Why am I seeing it like that (为什么我是这样看的?)”
35.根据后文“When we struggle to get to sleep, our minds can start to fill with anxious thoughts that make it even harder to doze off. (当我们挣扎着入睡时,我们的大脑会开始充满焦虑的想法,这让我们更难入睡)”可知,此处指出睡眠在缓解焦虑时起到的重要作用。D选项“Having good-quality sleep can improve mental health.(拥有高质量的睡眠可以改善心理健康)”引起下文,提出高质量的睡眠可以改善心理健康,符合语境。故选D。

How to cultivate emotional awareness
In school, we learned the periodic table and were told to recite the alphabet, but nobody forced us to take a class on what emotions are and how they work. 36 Yet, research shows that being aware of your emotions is hugely beneficial and people with high emotional awareness have better social and emotional functioning.
Emotional awareness is being able to identify and make sense of not only our own emotions but those of others. It’s absolutely essential in maintaining good mental health. But if you’ve spent a lifetime masking your real emotions, being honest with yourself for the first time may prove tough. 37
Turn to mindfulness
Mindfulness is the process of bringing our attention to: the present moment and becoming more aware of our thoughts. 38 There are many ways to be mindful, from practising breathwork to sitting in silence. Where emotional awareness is concerned, meditation which can aid clarity and allow us to view our emotions in a more measured way is strongly recommended.
Practice daily self-reflection
39 You’d better create a habit of checking with yourself every day. Self-reflection cultivates emotional awareness and is key to understanding why you feel the way you do. Activities such as journaling can be really beneficial in learning about your thought processes. It may also help you actively choose healthy coping strategies to manage more challenging emotions. Free-writing, where you write out everything that’s on your mind without judgement, can be used to dig deeper into your thoughts and feelings.
Name what you’re feeling
Sometimes what we really struggle with is putting our emotions into words. 40 Instead of employing basic descriptions like angry, happy, frustrated or sad, consult The Emotion Wheel which identifies eight basic emotions at the centre of the wheel, with dozens of corresponding emotions of various intensities stemming out from it. It gives you a specific name for what you’re feeling. By naming them, we can not only find relief from those uncomfortable feelings but bring more joy and fulfilment into our lives too.
A.When was the last time you stopped and truly observed how you feel
B.Turn into your emotions and honestly reflecting on how you feel is important.
C.It can be difficult to feel heard by others if we don’t have the language to describe how we’re feeling.
D.But it gets easier with practice.
E.It’s not always easy to put a finger on exactly what’s wrong, without digging a little deeper.
F.It’s a state of calm, non-judgmental state of mind.
G.And for many of us, that means understanding how we feel and why can be incredibly difficult.
36.G 37.D 38.F 39.A 40.C
36.根据下文“Yet, research shows that being aware of your emotions is hugely beneficial and people with high emotional awareness have better social and emotional functioning. (然而,研究表明,意识到自己的情绪是非常有益的,情绪意识高的人有更好的社交和情感功能。)”可知,空处和下文形成转折关系,下文说到意识到自己的情绪有益,上文应该是提出认识到自己的情绪是有困难的。G项:And for many of us, that means understanding how we feel and why can be incredibly difficult.
37.根据上文“But if you’ve spent a lifetime masking your real emotions, being honest with yourself for the first time may prove tough. (但如果你一生都在掩饰自己的真实情绪,那么第一次对自己诚实可能会很困难。)”和下文提到的认识自己情绪的方法可知,空处表明多练习就会让认识自己的情绪变得容易。D项:But it gets easier with practice.
38.根据上文“Mindfulness is the process of bringing our attention to: the present moment and becoming more aware of our thoughts. (正念是将我们的注意力集中到当下,并更加意识到我们的想法的过程。)”可知,上文在解释什么是正念,空处对正念的含义进行进一步解释说明。F项:It’s a state of calm, non-judgmental state of mind.
A项:When was the last time you stopped and truly observed how you feel 故选A。
40.根据上文“Sometimes what we really struggle with is putting our emotions into words. (有时候,我们真正挣扎的是把我们的情绪用语言表达出来。)”可知,本段强调要说出自己的感受,C项中的“have the language to describe how we’re feeling”与“putting our emotions into words”对应。C项:It can be difficult to feel heard by others if we don’t have the language to describe how we’re feeling.

It is widely thought that the idea of a park or nature reserve under state ownership started in the United States in 1870. 42 Yosemite, Sequoia, and General Grant National Parks were established in the United States in 1890. And the U. S. National Park Service (NPS)was created in 1916 to manage the parks. 43 In addition to national parks, the system included national preserves, seashores, historic parks and sites and so on.
Partly following the American example, movements supporting national parks sprang up in many other countries. 44 . And Canada set up its first three national parks in the mid-1880s. The establishment of modern national parks and nature reserves gained momentum (动力)only after World War I or, in some cases, after World War II in Europe. Great Britain established the administrative machinery for both national parks and nature reserves in 1949. 45
But interest in parks came later in Asia and Latin America than it did in the Anglo-American countries and Europe.
A.These movements began in Canada.
B.George Catlin offered the idea during the 1830s.
C.Visitors are allowed to enter for different purposes.
D.Those in the United Kingdom center mainly on the land.
E.Japan and Mexico established their first national parks in the 1930s.
F.By the early 21st century the NPS managed more than 400 separate areas.
G.It is also thought that the world’s first such park was Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

Self-acceptance is the ability to be comfortable with who you are. When you love yourself, it’s about learning to like the parts of yourself that you don’t like. But how to start self-acceptance
The first step is to understand it. You need to know that it’s okay if you have disadvantages and are different from other people. No one is perfect, so don’t try to be. It’s also important to remember that everyone has a different opinion. 46 If you don’t want something, don’t do it.
The next step is choosing the right thoughts and words to describe yourself. When someone says something negative or makes fun of you, don’t let it bother you. 47 If you keep thinking about it, it’ll only make you feel worse.
48 When you think positively, it’ll show in your actions and words. You’ll start to like yourself more. Think about things you like, and let them help you get through the tough times.
Being kind to yourself is another way to practice self-acceptance. Have fun! 49 This will make it easier for you when you have difficult days in the future.
Be careful about the words you use when talking to yourself, too! Lots of people say negative phrases to themselves. For example, students might say “I don’t like myself”. 50
A.It’s also important to have positive thoughts about yourself.
B.It’s okay to be upset, but don’t let it stay with you for too long.
C.What might bother you about yourself might not bother another person.
D.Do something nice for yourself or take a break from life every once in a while.
E.If self-acceptance leads to positive steps in the future, it can lead to a happier life.
F.But when you talk badly about yourself in your head, there’s no one but you to stop it.
G.Self-acceptance is similar from person to person and there is no wrong or right way to do it.

A national park is an area set aside by a government for the preservation of the natural environment. The national parks in the United States and Canada center on the protection of both land and wildlife. 41 And those in Africa primarily protect animals.

Being caring allows you to live a life based on love. If you want to know how to be more caring, see the following steps to get started.
71 One way to be caring is to put more effort into learning about how other people are doing. When you talk to someone, ask him or her about his or her physical condition, vacations or pets. Trying to ask the little questions can add up to showing that you do care. 72
Help people in need. You can’t be a caring person if you’re only out to help yourself. Helping other people means helping both the friends and family members who need help, and the less fortunate people in your community, or even people you may not know that well who need assistance. 73

If you know you’ve hurt somebody, then you have to swallow your pride and say sorry to show that you’re aware of how your actions impact others. Doing this shows that you really care, because you think about how others are feeling.
Keep track of people. Let people know that you’re thinking about them even when you’re not together. To do this, whether sending a text message after your best friend’s exam, or calling your cousin on her birthday is necessary. 75 Though it’s unrealistic to talk to friends every day, contacting at least one friend a week will make a big difference.

While the key to success in both personal and professional relationships lies in your ability to communicate well, it’s not the words that you use but your nonverbal cues or “body language” that speak the loudest. Body language is the use of physical behavior, expressions, and mannerisms (言谈举止) to communicate nonverbally, often done instinctively (本能地) rather than consciously. 76
Facial expressions. The human face is extremely expressive, able to convey countless emotions without saying a word. 77 The facial expressions for happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, and disgust are the same across cultures.
Body movement and posture. Consider how your perceptions of people are affected by the way they sit, walk, stand, or hold their head. The way you move and carry yourself communicates a wealth of information to the world. 78
Gestures. Gestures are woven into the fabric of our daily lives. You may wave, point, or use your hands when arguing or speaking energetically, often expressing yourself with gestures without thinking. 79 While the “OK” sign made with the hand, for example, usually conveys a positive message in English-speaking countries, it’s considered offensive in countries such as Germany, Russia, and Brazil. So, it’s important to be careful of how you use gestures to avoid misinterpretation.
Space. 80 We all have a need for physical space, although that need differs depending on the culture, the situation, and the closeness of the relationship. You can use it to communicate many different nonverbal messages, including signals of closeness and affection or aggression.
A.And facial expressions are universal.
B.All the feelings in mind can be seen on the face.
C.However, the meaning of some of them can be very different across cultures.

There you were, sitting in a classroom, practicing writing letters and words. Maybe you were printing (手写印剧字体) them, or maybe you were learning cursive (草体). At some point, you probably asked yourself, “Why do I need to know how to write when all 1 need is to press the keys on a computer ” 81 It also helps you remember the information that you write down.
82 Actually, beginner printing is usually very messy, and sometimes we cannot even tell what the letters are. Also, the shape of each letter can change each time a child tries to write it. But remember that every time a child sees a letter that looks a little different but still has the same name, it helps the child’s brain to learn that letter.
Research has also shown that if you wrote something by hand, you would remember it better than if you typed it on your computer! Why does this happen 83 But speed may be the problem! When we type information, we tend to type exactly what the teacher is saying. Without thinking about it. Writing by hand takes longer, so we cannot record everything the teacher says. When writing, we tend to put things into our own words or summarize what the teacher says. 84
In summary, writing by hand can help you learn new things like letters, but it also allows you to remember information better than if you typed it. It does not matter how you write—printing, cursive, abbreviations (宿写). 85 So, keep writing!
A.That makes things a lot easier.
B.It just matters that you write by hand.
C.Surely it is quicker to type during a lecture than to write, right
D.What did your printing look like when you first started to write
E.In a way, taking notes by hand is a way of studying while we are learning!
F.Well, in short, writing by hand helps you learn a set of symbols more easily.
G.When people write letters, they actively see and feel the letters being written.

A study examined positive empathy’s (同理心) role in daily life and found that it drove kind acts, such as helping others. Sharing in someone else’s joy can also improve life satisfaction and help people work together during a conflict. 86
Show active interest in someone else’s happiness. To start with, invite the bearer of good news to discuss the experience. Even if your heart isn’t in it, happiness can grow when you make a heartfelt effort to busy yourself with a positive activity. So when you speak with your friend, make eye contact and listen attentively. 87 Thus you may feel as if your efforts will pay off.
See personal success as a common effort. When we feel happy for others, their joy becomes our joy. Sharing in someone else’s joy encourages us to look at success as a community achievement. 88 When you lift up others, you’re often carried up with them.
89 Showing appreciation for your successes with others can also increase the happiness. Start by sharing your win, then tell the other person how you appreciate the help. In this way, you can think of sharing as something you can spread when you’re experiencing personal joy.
Turn into a joy spectator (见证者). You don’t need to wait for someone else’s good news to share. Asking about other people’s wins turns you into a joy spectator. 90
Celebrating our friends’ successes-big and small-helps us all succeed in the end.
A.No one gets to the top alone.
B.Create a friendly atmosphere.
C.Share your successes with others.
D.This should drive you to keep going.
E.Being able to reach for happiness is helpful.
