Jill Wheatley was a PE teacher in Germany. On the weekends she competed in marathons around Europe. But life threw her a near deadly blow. While teaching a PE class, she was hit in the head with a baseball. The impact was so great it left her with a brain injury and 70 percent vision loss, permanently blinding her in one eye. She spent 26 months in seven different hospitals, at times wishing it would just all end.
Desperately, Wheatley set out to find comfort and healing in nature. She travelled to Nepal where a friend convinced her to run in the Annapurna 100 with him. The power from that race changed her life and eventually had her looking up at the tops of the mountains. Project Vision 8000 was born. And she began her mission to stand on top of the world’s 14 highest mountains, towering 8, 000 metres above sea level, to show herself and others the power in choice and possibility.
Colours and touch help guide her on the mountain and she has never once felt too tired to carry on.“The only thing constant is change, so when the weather gets really bad or a storm is coming in, I know it is going to pass.”So far, she’s had few problems standing among giants, but she admits she continues to struggle with overcoming: the “mountains of her mind”. Having already stared death in the face, Wheatley has great respect for the mountains and the mission she is on. But she’s not seared. The experience almost claimed her life, but it is now the driving force and fuel behind her success. At every icy peak, she smiles and takes a quick video with a breathless “so very thankful” whispered into the thin air.
24. What happened to Wheatley according to paragraph 1
A. She came last in a race. B. She suffered head injury.
C. She lost her sight completely. D. She was attacked in a class.

D. Her participation in the Annapurna 100.
26. What can we learn about Wheatley from the last paragraph
A. Her attitude toward dilemma was reshaped.
B. She was used to poor weather conditions.
C. She ignored the mountains of her mind.
D. Her nature helped her overcome fear.
27. What could be the best title for the text
A. Every peak is within reach.
B. Lose sight to gain vision.
C. Action speaks louder than words.
D. Nature will work its course.

Feeling extremely stressed by your to-do list can make you unhappy, but a new study suggests that more free time might not be the magic way that most of us dream it could be.
The researchers analyzed data from 35,000 subjects about how Americans spend their free time. They found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective happiness — but only up to a pared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day.
Part of finding this “sweet spot” is connected with how people spend their free time. In an online experiment, the subjects were asked to imagine having four to seven free hours per day and spending that time doing “productive” or “unproductive” activities. Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day — but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was based on the previous assumptions, which is one limitation, it agrees with other experiments showing that being in a state of flow (心流状态) can benefit people’s mental health.
Of course, for you, any activities that increase your happiness are “productive”. If watching soap opera in your free time makes you feel better, you should do that due to self-care. And some traditionally productive activities can be easy and fun. For example, walking and cooking can help burn stress and put people in a state of flow.
“In cases where people find themselves with large amounts of free time, such as retirement or unemployment,” Sharif said, “our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes.”
28. How much free time one day do people have that can generally make them feel better
A. About 60 minutes. B. About 90 minutes.
C. From 120 to 180 minutes. D. From 180 to 210 minutes.
29. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us
A. How being in a state of flow can benefit people’s mental health.
B. How the researchers analyzed data from the 35,000 subjects.
C. How “productive” activities are different from “unproductive” ones.
D. How people make use of their free time influences their happiness.
30. How can we understand the “productive” activities in paragraph 4
A. They must be fun and easy. B. They are mostly traditional ones. C. They depend on one’s own sense. D. They generally rely on one’s own physical condition.
31. What did Sharif say to people who have a lot of free time
A. People should spend their time with aims.
B. It is not easy for people to have newfound time.
C. People can benefit from large amounts of free time.
D. Retired and unemployed people can’t deal with free time well.
D
After eight years of construction, the Padma Multipurpose Bridge in Bangladesh opened to the public on June 26, reducing travel time from parts of the southwest of the country to the capital Dhaka from seven to eight hours to as little as just 10 minutes.
The 21.5-meter-wide, 6.15-kilometer-long bridge built over the Padma River, the main branch of the Ganges, has two levels with the upper tier having a four-lane highway and the lower tier a single-track railway, according to Wuhan-based China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, or MBEC, one of China’s biggest bridge makers. Before that, travelers and goods were transported via boat or ship because of the vast width and fast-flowing nature of the river, and the tendency of the area to flood.
In 2014, the Bangladeshi government awarded MBEC a $1.54-billion contract to build the core structure of the bridge, making it the country’s largest infrastructure(基础建设) project as well as the largest foreign bridge project undertaken by Chinese companies in terms of total cost.
“The construction was much harder than expected as the complex geological conditions brought multiple challenges to us,” said Shen Tao, deputy general manager of the project. “The bridge is located above a river with banks on loose soil, and downpours in the rainy season often caused flooding, bringing us numerous difficulties we had never experienced before.” “During the construction, we had to adjust the design plan to adapt to environmental changes whenever necessary,” he added.
“However, through continuous learning and adaptation, construction teams have greatly improved their abilities including technology, communication and adaptability.” said Wen Wusong, chairman of MBEC. “They demonstrated the strength of China’s road bridge construction to the whole world and the bridge is a model of international cooperation.”
Over the past eight years, the project has created over 50,000 jobs for local residents, according to MBEC.
32. What do we know about the bridge
A. It is over the Ganges. B. It is across the Padma River.
C. The upper tier has a single-track railway. D. The lower tier has a four-lane highway.
33. What did Shen Tao mainly express in paragraph 4
A. Costs of building the bridge. B. Features of the newly-built bridge.
C. Benefits the bridge can bring about. D. Difficulties in constructing the bridge.
34. Which can replace the underlined word “demonstrated” in paragraph 5
A. Measured. B. Adapted. C. Showed. D. Preserved.
35. What can be the best title for the news report
A. China-made bridge opens in Bangladesh.
B. Eight years of China’s constructing a bridge in Bangladesh.
C. Constructing a bridge creates over 50,000 jobs in Bangladesh.
D. Bangladeshi government awards MBEC $1.54-billion contract.

Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. ___36___Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent
___37___They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance.
To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. ___38___In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, “There is no I in TEAM.” __39___
Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.
___40___ An A-team may require a balance--not just A players, but a few generous B players as well.
A. It’s not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.
B. Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent.
C. The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers’ attention.
D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.
E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.
F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.

Agatha was in the library, reading the Girl Detective series, when she noticed something strange. Her best friends, Timmy and Florence, were talking to each other in whispers while keeping a good, safe distance from her! When she waved at them, they looked away.
Things only got stranger in art class. Timmy and Florence went to sit at a different table from Agatha busy painting and glanced at her when they thought she wasn’t looking.
Now, Agatha considered herself to be something of a detective. After all, she had read many detective stories for children and even had an old broken magnifying glass(放大镜)abandoned by her father. When the rest of the class went out for lunch, she slipped to Timmy and Florence’s table and examined it carefully with the magnifying glass.
There was paint, and red and pink construction paper. What could they be doing This was definitely a mystery that needed solving! After lunch Timmy and Florence chatted to her as if nothing was going on, but they kept smiling at her in a slightly strange way. Of course, Agatha could have asked them what they were up to, and they might have told her -but she wouldn’t have a chance to become a detective!
On the way home from school, Florence and her mum happened to walk ahead of Agatha and her mum. Agatha saw them go into the bookshop. Strange, again. Florence didn’t read much—no matter how many detective stories Agatha recommended to her!
The next day at school, Agatha kept an eye on her friends and tried to work out their mystery, but they seemed determined to keep things secret. She asked them if they would like to play with her after school, but they said they couldn’t because they were busy. Even more mysterious…
When Agatha’s mum came to pick her up after school, she was so lost in the unsolved mystery that she hardly noticed her busy father was coming along, which was unusual. When they arrived home, her father said she could go into the living room.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150 左右;

Para1 Opening the door of the living room, Agatha heard voices shout from darkness, “SURPRISE!”. When she entered the darkened living room, the lights came on suddenly. Her best friend Timmy and Florence were there, grinning! On the table were a cake with candles and a pile of presents. Mum and Dad followed her into the living-room and lit the candles, saying: “Happy Birthday, dear. You were so distracted by the mystery to be solved as to forget today is your birthday! Now, blow the candles, make a wish and enjoy the cake.”
Para2 After eating the cake, Agatha got down to the business of opening her birthday presents. The first gift was the big red and pink birthday card with “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” written on it in Timmy and Florence’s childish handwriting. “We hope you like the card we made for you!” said Timmy, and Florence added, “We also bought the latest Sherlock Holmes Detective series for you!” Agatha hugged her friends in appreciation of their surprise gifts. Mum and Dad handed her a brand-new magnifying glass in place of the old broken one. Agatha might not have solved the mystery, but it was still a wonderful birthday party!

M: Alice, you fed the parrot this morning, didn’t you
W: No, I didn’t. I did that last night.
M: Oh, no. I fed it yesterday afternoon.
M: I can’t fix these machines until tomorrow, I’m afraid.
W: That’s okay. Take your time. There’s no hurry.
M: Thanks!
W: Hello, I like that white dress in the window. Do you have a size 12
M: Sorry, there’s only a blue one in size 12.
W: It’s a pity. I just want a white one to match my pink hat.
M: I saw your son playing the violin at the contest yesterday. He has a talent for music, I have to say.
W: Thank you. He has been learning musical instruments since primary school. His teacher often praises him for his efforts.
M: Did you enjoy the movie last night, Caroline
W: No, it was rubbish. I couldn’t put up with those silly tricks; they weren’t my cup of tea, but I had to stick it out because I was with two of my friends. However, they were excited from start to finish.
M: Really I thought you’d be satisfied with that
W: No. I’m going to write a negative review on the Internet.
W: Quentin, your hair and clothes are wet. Didn’t you bring an umbrella when you left home Here’s a dry towel.
M: Thanks. I didn’t bring an umbrella. I just rode a shared bike.
W:Are you kidding It’s raining hard at present.
M: I thought it would be sunny like yesterday.
W: The weather has been very mixed recently. Who knows
M: You’re right. How do you usually go to work
W: I usually drive here, but I guessed the traffic would be terrible due to the bad weather, so I took the subway today.
M: A wise decision. I still prefer riding a shared bike. It’s convenient. Besides, it is good for the environment.
W: But there are too many shared bikes on the roads without helmets. You may get injured if you don’t wear a helmet.
W: Nice party, isn’t it

W: What a coincidence! I’m a History major, too! What are your favorite courses

W: I’m afraid not. My paper is due next Monday. So I’m not available this weekend.
M: Goodwell Property Agency. Hello, I’m Oscar. May I help you
W: Yes, I want a one-bedroom flat with an open kitchen on King Street.
M: OK. Did you see our advertisements in the newspaper or on the Internet

M: I see. But I have to tell you the rent on King Street is a bit high and flats there can be noisy at night, because King Street is near the financial center. Can you accept that
W: Yes, as long as it’s only a short walk to my office.
M: I got it. Do you have any idea of your budget
W: Maybe $500 a month.
M: Let me check. Oh, I found one for you but it’s $100 more than your budget. If you rent it, you have to pay 3 months’ rent in advance.
W: Alright.
M: Would next Tuesday be convenient for you to tour the flat
W: I’m going to have meetings next Tuesday. And I will be away on business next Wednesday. How about 2:00 p.m. next Thursday

M: Emerging from the Antarctic deep, the world’s most famous undiscovered shipwreck Endurance is now found. It’s the first time anyone has seen it in more than 100 years. Endurance, perfectly preserved, is 3,000 meters beneath the ice.
“I knew that this was probably either the first or second most strongly-built ice ship ever, and I was just amazed at its construction. It held together beautifully.” said a British explorer.
The condition is astonishing. The exploring team spent weeks searching the deep until Endurance was at last found. The team found that Endurance was in trouble from the start — becoming stuck in thick sea ice just weeks after setting off from South Georgia. It floated for months before an order was eventually given to the crew to abandon the ship.
The ship won’t be raised and nothing will be removed. When the team left, it was just as it was found, resting in the darkness of this most remote corner of the world.

由文章第一段“While teaching a PE class, she was hit in the head with a baseball. The impact was so great it left her with a brain injury and 70 percent vision loss, permanently blinding her in one eye. (在教体育课时,她被棒球击中了头部。撞击非常严重,导致她脑部受伤,视力下降70%,一只眼睛永久失明。)”和最后一段“At every icy peak, she smiles and takes a quick video with a breathless‘so very thankful’ whispered into the thin air.(在每一个结冰的山峰上,她都会微笑着拍下一段快速的视频,并在稀薄的空气中低声说一句‘非常感谢’。)”
根据第二段中的“Compared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time ‘sweet spot’ might be two to three hours per day. (与时间较少的人相比,每天有两小时自由时间的人通常感觉更好。然而,每天有5个小时或更多空闲时间的人通常感觉更糟。所以空闲时间的‘最佳时间’可能是每天两到三个小时。)”可知每天拥有两到三个小时的空闲时间的人感觉更好。故选C。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“Part of finding this ‘sweet spot’ is connected with how people spend their free time。(找到这个‘最佳时间’有一部分与人们如何度过空闲时间有关。)”以及下文的实验结果“Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was based on the previous assumptions, which is one limitation, it agrees with other experiments showing that being in a state of flow (心流状态) can benefit people’s mental health.(他们中的大多数人认为,如果白天有很多空闲时间,他们的幸福感会受到影响——但只有在他们没有成效地利用空闲时间的情况下。虽然该实验是基于之前的假设,这是一个局限性,但它与其他实验一致,表明处于心流状态可以有利于人们的心理健康。)”可知此段主要阐述人们如何利用空闲时间会影响他们的幸福感。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Of course, for you, any activities that increase your happiness are ‘productive’. If watching soap opera in your free time makes you feel better, you should do that due to self-care. And some traditionally productive activities can be easy and fun. For example, walking and cooking can help burn stress and put people in a state of flow.(当然,对你来说,任何能增加你幸福感的活动都是‘有成效的’。如果在你的空闲时间看肥皂剧让你感觉更好,你应该这样做,因为你要照顾自己。一些传统的富有成效的活动可以是简单和有趣的。例如,散步和做饭可以帮助缓解压力,让人们处于一种流动的状态。)”可知能让你感觉更好,有趣的,能够缓减压力的活动就是富有成效的,所以富有成效的活动取决于自己的感觉。故选C。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“‘In cases where people find themselves with large amounts of free time, such as retirement or unemployment,’ Sharif said, ‘our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes.’(‘在人们发现自己有大量自由时间的情况下,比如退休或失业,’Sharif说,‘我们的研究结果表明,他们可以从把新发现的时间花在有目的的事情上来获益。’)” 故选A。
