Books That Remind Me of Home
Being in another country makes you appreciate all the things you love about your home. Reading and sharing books helps me to connect with my home country, the UK.
Here are some books that, for me, create vivid memories of home.
Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster
This book takes the form of a series of letters, and follows the story of a girl, Judy, as she goes to university and discovers a whole world of new experiences. It reminds me of my home and my mother, because she used to read it to me when I was ill in bed.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson-Burnett
Have you ever read a description of a rural (乡村的) area that made you feel like you were actually there For me, this book does exactly that. It is about a young girl who discovers a secret garden.
The Railway Children by E. Nesbit
This was one of my favourite books when I was younger, and for this reason it still strongly reminds me of England and my childhood. It follows three children and their adventures living next to a railway.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Mary Shelley bends over her latest creation. Although the carving is only half complete, the image of a waitress holding a plate of eggs comes out from the board. Of Shelley’s nearly seven hundred carvings, many show scenes with cows on farms and people in restaurants.
From memories to carvings
“My work is a visual diary, ” Shelley says. “The carvings describe things I have experienced and felt at different times in my life.”
Every one of her carvings tells a story. Many of the stories in Shelley’s woodcarvings come from memories of her childhood in a rural (乡村的) area outside of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Shelley’s family managed a small farm. Mary was a serious girl who spent a lot of time raising animals, exploring outdoors, and reading. Although Shelley never felt especially artistic as a child, there was always an art project in the works in the Shelley household. Her grandmother painted. Her father was a commercial artist, who drew and wrote to make a living.
______
Shelley attended Cornell University and hoped to become a writer, but an unusual present took her in another direction. At age 23, she received a gift her father had made-a woodcarving of her as a girl on the farm. The gift caught her interest. After gathering boards from a building site where she worked as a carpenter, Shelley bought some tools and taught herself to carve.
Shelley soon realized that she loved the slow, thoughtful process of working with wood and painting. “A carving is like a jigsaw puzzle (拼图游戏),” she explains. “I didn’t know how it would all fit together, but the process of solving the puzzle kept me going.”
The Shelley style
Early in her career, people hired Shelley to carve special pieces that took four or five weeks to complete. The money she received motivated her to try more complicated scenes created by carving deeper in the wood. Over time, Shelley’s art began to have its own style. In a typical Shelley woodcarving, some objects seem to reach out of the frame while others drop back, creating a feeling of depth.
4. What can we infer from the “From memories to carvings” part
A. Art is from but beyond life. B. Life is short and art is long.
C. It is great art to laugh at your own misfortune. D. Knowledge without practice makes but half an artist
5. Which can be the best title for the second part
A. Life in School B. A Dream Come True
C. A Life-Changing Gift D. Jigsaw Puzzles and Carving
6. What made Mary take up carving
A. The dream to be an artist in her childhood. B. Her father’s low-relief carving for her.
C. The rugs hooked by her grandmother. D. Her school life in Cornell University.
7. According to the text, Shelley’s art ______.
A. is very popular B. is very expensive
C. has simple scenes D. creates a feeling of depth
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. D

There are a few benefits to users from the cloud besides giving you peace of mind if you lose your phone. You can access your data anytime, anywhere if you’re connected to the Internet. And you don’t have to worry about using up all of the storage on your hard drive, meaning you might not have to pay as much for a device (that comes with a ton of storage.
You’ve probably heard of the two biggest names in the market, Amazon Web Services, known as AWS, and Microsoft Azure, IBM, Google and Alibaba are also big players when it comes to providing cloud services.
Many cloud services are based on a subscription (pricing model. That means users pay, for example, a monthly fee for cloud services and they can scale up or down as needed. And cloud providers are cashing in. AWS takes up about 12 percent of Amazon’s quarterly sales, but it makes more than half of the company’s operating income.
Before we get too excited about the cloud, let’s take a step back and look at some of the risks. One obvious concern, if all of our data is online, what happens when the Internet goes down That’s what happened in 2013 when an AWS power cut took down Instagram, Vine and Airbub.
Hacker attacks are another big risk with research showing around one-fifth of all files in the cloud contain sensitive data.
Finally, it can be difficult for consumers and businesses to switch between different cloud companies. I might have a hard time syncing (my iCloud and Google Drive accounts. That can give some big companies that are already making big money on the cloud a lot of power over our data.
8. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “access” in Paragraph 1
A. Get. B. Show. C. Understand. D. Enter.
9. Which of the following provides cloud services
A. Instagram. B. Alibaba C. Airbub. D. Vine.
10. What can we learn from the passage
A. Cloud providers offer services at their own cost.
B. All the cloud services must be ordered ahead of time.
C. AWS gains over 50%of Amazon’s operating income.
D. Customers must pay a regular fixed fee for cloud services.
11. The main idea of the passage is about ______.
A. what the cloud is B. how the cloud works
C. the advantage over disadvantage of the cloud D. the advantage and disadvantage of the cloud
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. D
【解析】

If maths is the language of the universe, bees may have just uttered their first words. New research suggests these busybodies of the insect world are capable of addition and subtraction (减法) — using colors in the place of plus and minus symbols.
In the animal kingdom, the ability to count — or at least distinguish between differing quantities — isn’t unusual: It has been seen in frogs, spiders, and even fish. But solving equations (方程式) using symbols is rare, so far only achieved by famously brainy animals such as chimpanzees and African grey parrots.
Building on previous research that says the social insects can count to four and understand the concept of zero, researchers wanted to test the limits of what their tiny brains can do.
Scientists trained 14 bees to link the colors blue and yellow to addition and subtraction, respectively. They placed the bees at the entrance of a Y-shaped maze (迷宫), where they were shown several shapes in either yellow or blue. If the shapes were blue, bees got a reward if they went to the end of the maze with one more blue shape (the other end had one less blue shape); if the shapes were yellow, they got a reward if they went to the end of the maze with one less yellow shape.
The testing worked the same way: Bees that “subtracted” one shape when they saw yellow, or “added” one shape when they saw blue were considered to have aced the test. The bees got the right answer 63% to 72% of the time, depending on the type of equation and the direction of the right answer — much better than random guesses would allow—the researchers report today in Science Advances.
Though the results came from just 14 bees, researchers say the advance is exciting. If a brain about 20,000 times smaller than ours can perform maths using symbols, it could pave the way to novel approaches in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Just don’t ask the bees to do your homework anytime soon.
12. Why do the scientists conduct the research
A. To teach them maths. B. To test the power of tiny brains.
C. To explain the meaning of colors. D. To get access to machine learning.
13. What does the underlined word “aced” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Given up. B. Entered for.
C. Got through. D. Checked over.
14. What might the research make contributions to
A. Language acquisition. B. Arithmetic learning.
C. Protection of animals. D. Development of AI.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Bees “Like” Counting
B. Bees “Tell” Colors Apart
C. Bees “Perform” Maths Using Shapes
D. Bees “Get” Addition and Subtraction
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. D

【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的researchers wanted to test the limits of what their tiny brains can do.可知,研究者们开展这项研究是为了来测试蜜蜂微型大脑的能力。故B选项正确。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段中的Scientists trained 14 bees to link the colors blue and yellow to addition and subtraction及第五段中的Bees that “subtracted” one shape when they saw yellow, or “added” one shape when they saw blue可知,蓝色代表着加,黄色代表着减,那么当蜜蜂看到黄色时“减去”一个形状,或者当它们看到蓝色时“增加”一个形状时,这说明蜜蜂通过了测试。因此划线词aced与got through“通过”。故C选项正确。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第一段中的If a brain about 20,000 times smaller than ours can perform maths using symbols, it could pave the way to novel approaches in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.
Scientists trained 14 bees to link the colors blue and yellow to addition and subtraction及第五段中的Bees that “subtracted” one shape when they saw yellow, or “added” one shape when they saw blue可知,蓝色代表着加,黄色代表着减,那么当蜜蜂看到黄色时“减去”一个形状,或者当它们看到蓝色时“增加”一个形状时,这说明蜜蜂通过了测试。因此划线词aced与got through“通过”。故C选项正确。

Shelley soon realized that she loved the slow thoughtful process of working with wood and painting.

7. According to the text, Shelley’s art ______.

A Instagram. B. Alibaba C. Airbub. D. Vine.
C the advantage over disadvantage of the cloud D. the advantage and disadvantage of the cloud
D
C To explain the meaning of colors. D. To get access to machine learning.
13. What does the underlined word “aced” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Given up. B. Entered for.
C. Got through. D. Checked over.
14. What might the research make contributions to
A. Language acquisition. B. Arithmetic learning.
C. Protection of animals. D. Development of AI.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Bees “Like” Counting
B. Bees “Tell” Colors Apart
C. Bees “Perform” Maths Using Shapes
D. Bees “Get” Addition and Subtraction
