Sitting at the top of a mountain on La Gomera Island, Antonio issued an invitation to three visiting hikers in the distance—"Come girl over here. We're going to treat you to lunch."—without speaking a word: he whistled (吹口哨) it. Antonio, 71, said in his youth, when natives rather than tourists walked the rocky footpaths of his island, his news would have been greeted right away by a responding whistle, loud and clear. But his message was lost on these hikers, and they continued their journey.
Antonio is a proud guardian of La Gomera's whistling language, which he called the poetry of his island. He added, "Like poetry, whistling does not need to be useful in order to be special and beautiful." The language, officially known as Silbo Gomero, replaces written letters with whistled sounds that vary by pitch (音高) and length. Unfortunately, there are fewer whistles than Spanish letters, so a sound can have multiple meanings, causing misunderstandings.
With its distinct geography, it's easy to see why whistling came into existence on La Gomera. On most of the island, deep valleys run from high peaks down to the ocean, and plenty of time and effort are required to travel even a short distance overland. Whistling developed as a good alternative way to deliver a message, with its sound carrying farther than shouting-as much as two miles across some valleys with favourable wind conditions.
In 2009, the island's language was added by UNESCO to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, But with whistling no longer essential for communication, Silbo Gomero's survival mostly relies on a 1999 law that has made teaching it a necessary part of La Gomera's school courses. Erin Gerhards, a local girl keen to improve her whistling ,said, "Whistling is a way to honour the people that lived here in the past and to remember we didn't start with technology but simple beginnings. "

A.They ignored it. B.They waved their hands.
C.They whistled back. D.They stopped suddenly.

D.Because its sounds include various pitch and length.
6..What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The tourist attractions of La Gomera.
B.The geographic features of La Gomera.
C.The reason for whistling's use on La Gomera.
D.The comparison between whistling and shouting
7.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4
A.Erin figures out how islanders lived before.
B.Silbo Gomero is taught in La Gomera's schools.

The most important life lesson I've learned from running is to run at my own pace. This lesson has guided me in many ways. In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.
Running is a metaphor (隐喻) for life. I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice: run at your own best pace—setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right. Over time I ran more easily and faster. I also enjoyed the experience much more.
I have applied this principle to other areas of my life. Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day. It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life. Running carries its own set of expectations, including what people at certain life stage should be doing or not doing. Expectations at my age can centre on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandparent.
I used to think it was young people who bore the impact of peer pressure, but older adults can experience it too. This is ironic, because often later in this life is a time when we tend to care less about the opinions of others.
I'm not suggesting we postpone dreams. Of course, we should do what matters to us, but it's easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. It's a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.
Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at. Run at your own way. Our bodies know what they need. Our hearts know what they need. In living life on our own terms, we will likely feel stronger in body, mind and spirit.
8.What motivated the author to participate in a marathon
A.Her eager interest in running.
B.Her strong curiosity for a marathon.
C.Her keen wish to celebrate her birthday.
D.Her urgent need to enhance her strength.
9.What do the underlined words "this principle" in Paragraph 3probably refer to
A.Setting a target time. B.Finding your limitation.
C.Challenging fixed ideas. D.Running at your own pace.
10.How does the author feel about being retired
A.Nervous. B.Confused. C.Optimistic. D.Grateful.
11.What can we know about the author
A.She benefits from the coach's words. B.She used to be a professional runner.
C.She sees the value of a reference point. D.She's suffering a lot from peer pressure.
To the delight of bookworms, anyone who has ever told you burying your head in a book means you're being unsociable will have to eat their words. A new study suggests those who regularly read, especially fiction, are actually nicer and more empathetic (善解人意的) people.
The study, carried out by Kingston University London, and presented at the British Psychological Society conference in Brighton, the UK, last week, also found that those who just watched television seemed to be less kind and understanding of other people.
For the study, the researchers questioned 123 people on their preferences for books, TV shows, and plays. They were also quizzed about the type of entertainment they preferred from comedy or romance to drama. Then they were tested on their interpersonal skills. The researchers asked them about their behaviour towards others, whether they understood and respected others' points of view, and whether they actively helped other people.
Drawing on these response sheets, the researchers found some mind-boggling results. They discovered that those who read more showed greater positive social behaviour and a better ability to empathize with others, while those who preferred watching TV didn't show the same ability to empathize and were more likely to show unsociable behaviour.
They also found the forms of fiction people preferred were linked to their interpersonal skills and behaviour. Those who preferred fiction displayed the most positive social skills. Romance and drama lovers showed the ability to see others' points of view, while comedy fans were particularly able to relate to others the most.
The researchers concluded that those who read fiction regularly are more well-adapted to see things from other people's points of view, which makes them better at understanding people. However, they do acknowledge that their study didn't conclude if the effects are causal-does reading make you nicer and more empathetic, or do more empathetic people tend to read fiction Even so, picking up a book can't hurt, and might just make the world a nicer place.
12.How did the researchers conduct the research
A.By making questionnaire surveys. B.By comparing experiment statistics.
C.By observing participants' behaviors. D.By referring to previous study reports.
13.What does the underlined word "mind-boggling" mean in Paragraph 4
A.Embarrassing. B.Satisfying. C.Amazing. D.Disappointing.
14.What can improve people's empathetic abilities the most according to the study
A.Reading fiction and comedy. B.Enjoying romance and drama.
C.Taking part in social activities. D.Watching plays on social media.
15.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.All people support the research result.
B.Further study is needed on this subject.
C.The nicer and kinder people like reading.
D.Reading can help people make more friends.

"I'm going to miss you so much, Poppy, "said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. "I guess this is it," he said. "I'll see you back home in a month, okay "His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog, "Okay, Poppy, time to go back home."
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn't seem interested in her dinner, her favourite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn't.
They offered the dog some of her favourite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn't her usual cheerful self, Her owners started to get worried, "What should we do to cheer Poppy up "asked Dad. "We've tried everything."
"I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, "smiled Mum. "Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let's get a little dog for Poppy."
It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging (摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

Dear Jim,
I'm writing to inform you that I wish to move into a new room next term, as I find the present sharing arrangement inconvenient.
The reason is my roommate's inconsiderate behaviour. For instance, he always burns the midnight oil and makes noises, which deprives me of high-quality sleep. Besides, he sometimes borrows my things without asking. So I find it difficult to concentrate on my studies.
I think the only solution is to move into a room of my own, where I'll be free from distractions. Therefore, I wouldn't be more grateful if you could manage a single room for me.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared. Poppy jumped with joy at the sight of the little dog. She lowered her head to watch it curiously. Then she became so excited that she accidentally knocked over the box in an attempt to get closer. With the box tipping over, out came the little one, who was not shy and instantly got familiar with Poppy. It didn't take long before the two played around the house, cheerfully running after each other.
A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. He had been missing his parents and the dog since it was the first time that he had been away from home for such a long time. When the boy caught sight of Poppy, he went rushing towards the dog and bent down to give her a big hug. Suddenly, the boy noticed the little dog. "Oh my God, who is this " His parents laughed at the look of surprise on his face. "It's Poppy's new companion," said Mum.
