If Dhruv Rebba, an Indian American, had to live on a remote island, he would bring a ham radio kit(业余无线电设备)along. “The island wouldn’t have cellular connectivity(蜂窝数据连接), of course. Ham radio would be the best option to contact someone as it uses the ionosphere(电离层)to communicate instead of cellular towers. That’s why we use it when mobile phone networks are destroyed during natural disasters," he said in an interview.
When Rebba was nine, he received his ham radio technician license, becoming the youngest person of Indian origin then to receive it. “My dad has been a ham radio operator for the past 25 years. When I was in the third grade, I persuaded him to take me along to the Dayton Hamvention, where I was totally amazed by some cool stuff including Morse code keyers. From then on, I decided to go further in this field,” Rebba said.
In 2017, Rebba was part of the Amateur(业余的)Radio on the International Space Station(ARISS)project. It involves amateur radio operators across the world, speaking directly to astronauts through their radio stations. After three tries, I received the approval. As I have an amateur radio license, I was able to make my initial contact. 16 students across America were given the chance to ask Joseph M. Acaba, who was then on the International Space Station(ISS), 23 questions, Rebba explained.
Besides being a ham radio operator, Rebba is also the CEO of Universal Help Foundation. “I once visited my dad’s village in India where I noticed the gap in the standard of living. That’s what stimulated me to start Universal Help Foundation—to create an impact,” said Rebba. He named the foundation Universal Help Foundation rather than limiting it to environmental sustainability or disaster relief. Instead, he wanted to bridge the gap.
Meanwhile, Rebba hopes to get further high up in space. However, the overall picture of the ham radio field is unpleasant. “The ham population is aging and fewer youngsters are drawn to it. Now we all have cell phones and the younger crowd doesn’t see the everyday use of ham radio as important,” Rebba added.
24. What characterizes ham radio
A. Being able to connect to cellular towers.
B. Being a reliable means of communication.
C. Being effective in predicting natural disasters.
D. Being quick to repair a broken mobile network.
25. How would Rebba describe the experience of visiting the Dayton Hamvention
A. Boring. B. Moving. C. Confusing. D. Inspiring.
26. Why did Rebba start Universal Help Foundation
A. To improve the lives of the poor.
B. To raise people’s environmental awareness.
C. To provide disaster relief for remote villages.
D. To strengthen the connections among villagers.
27. What is Rebba’s main concern
A. Ham radio has become a dying hobby.
B. Ham radio is useless in certain situations.
C. Young people are addicted to cell phones.
D. Young people attach little importance to technology.

Paris is full of cultural significance. Yet, despite its wealth of cultural hotspots and architectural delights, some tourists who explore the City of Light experience “Paris syndrome(巴黎综合征),a psychological condition that often results in nausea(恶心)and increased heart rates. An interesting phenomenon is that Paris syndrome is "most common among Japanese tourists”. Why
Many Japanese visitors go with a deeply romantic picture of Paris----the beauty of French women, the high culture and art. But when the reality of the modern city of Paris sets in, with its seemingly unfriendly service and confusing public transport, some tourists simply find their hope falling through.
“An encounter with a Parisian waiter who shouts at customers might be laughed off by those from other Western cultures. But for the Japanese —used to a society where politeness is value d and voice s are rarely raised in anger-----the experience of their dream city turning into a nightmare(噩梦)can simply be too much,” said Rodanthi Tzanelli, a professor of cultural sociology.
So Paris syndrome should be regarded as an extreme form of culture shock, which is an illness resulting from the loss of meaning when people find themselves in a different symbolic reality, according to Rachel Irwin, a senior researcher. The symptoms(症状)associated with culture shock are similar to those experienced by someone who is feeling anxious. According to the analysis(分析)of Calm Clinic, a mental health resource platform, when someone is experiencing anxiety, signals that are related to the fight or flight response will be sent to the stomach. The signals change the way the body processes food, causing nausea.
Besides, Tzanelli points out that the syndrome is not specific to Paris and nobody can be free of culture shock as long as they go to new places. The syndrome is likely a “general phenomenon”, as younger generations tend to travel to different countries, and are likely to be more aware of what they’ll encounter at a destination. Therefore, they’re unlikely to be bitterly disappointed when they’re there.
28. Why do Japanese tourists experience great discomfort in Paris
A. Paris lacks real historical and cultural hotspots.
B. Paris fails to meet their romantic expectations.
C. They find Paris’ public transport less modern.
D. They cannot adapt to the local climate.
29. What does Rodanthi Tzanelli aim to explain in paragraph 3
A. How culture influences the behavior of tourists.
B. How Japanese tourists react to Paris syndrome.
C. Why Paris syndrome particularly strikes the Japanese.
D. Why the Japanese value politeness and avoid conflicts.
30. What does Calm Clinic’s analysis stress
A. People’s inability to adapt to new cultures.
B. The methods of overcoming culture shock.
C. People’s varied attitudes to different cultures.
D. The physical discomfort caused by culture shock.
31. What will be the author’s advice on overcoming Paris syndrome
A. To be prepared for new encounters in advance.
B. To focus on the positive aspects of a destination.
C. To visit new places together with young people.
D. To avoid going to unfamiliar destinations.

On an October morning in 2021, ornithologist(鸟类学家)Mark A. Michaels spotted a bird in a forest, which he first thought was a duck based on its size and long neck. But then he noticed it sometimes folding its wings during flight, something he says that ducks don’t do---but woodpeckers do. “Ivory-billed woodpecker(象牙喙啄木鸟)!” he shouted, certain that the bird was a species that hasn’t been clearly identified in the wild since 1944.
Michaels has had several possible ivory-bill encounters, but he couldn’t be fully certain. This sighting was different. “That was the first time I had been absolutely sure,” he says.
But not everyone agrees this woodpecker remains in the wild. In September 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service(USFWS)put forward a ruling that would declare the ivory-billed woodpecker, along with 22 other species, extinct. However, the supportive data are debated. As a result, on July 6,2022, the agency gave the woodpecker an extension of six months before deciding whether to strip away its protected status(地位)as an existing endangered species.
This case highlight s some challenges researchers face in determining whether a species has actually gone extinct. “It’s difficult to prove the absence of something,” says ecologist H. Resit Akcakaya, and so a lack of sightings is not necessarily evidence of extinction.
Moreover, there are costs to making the wrong call about a species’ existence in the wild. Continuing to classify(界定)an actually extinct species as endangered can misdirect financial resources away from protecting vulnerable(脆弱的)species to searching for ones that no longer exist. On the other hand, declaring something extinct when it isn’t can do further harm to a struggling species. “If we think a species is extinct, we no longer have to protect it,” Akcakaya says, “and then it may actually go extinct.”
In the case of the ivory-billed woodpecker, Michaels could do nothing but await USFWS’s ruling. But he was glad that the agency gave the extension. “I’m personally one hundred percent sure that it’s out there,” says Michaels.
32. What can we learn about the ivory-billed woodpecker from the first paragraph
A. It was spotted many times.
B. It became extinct in 1944.
C. It looked a bit similar to a duck.
D. Its wings were always spread during flight.
33. What does the underlined phrase “strip away” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Confirm. B. Discuss. C. Create. D. Remove.
34. What do researchers find difficult when determining extinct species
A. Winning the trust of the public.
B. Providing proof of their extinction.
C. Deciding which species are valuable.
D. Getting financial support for the research.
35. What will happen if a species is believed to be extinct
A. New protection measures will be carried out.
B. There will be a huge waste of financial resources.
C. The protection of this species will come to an end.
D. Researchers will conduct further studies on this species.

第二节(满分25分)

At 6 pm in the mall on Christmas Eve, I was tired from my part-time job as an elf(精灵)helping Santa with kids’ photos to earn money during the December of my sixteenth year.
Everyone was very busy. I looked over at Shelly, our manager, and she gave me an encouraging smile. Instead of angrily shouting at her workers, she always positively encouraged us and stood behind us. Under her leadership, we had achieved the highest number of mall photo sales in California.
I knew it was a difficult holiday season for her —she was experiencing a family crisis. I hoped she knew how great she was and what a difference she had made to her workers and all little children coming to have their pictures taken.
Our Santa booth(摊位)was open until seven. At six, things started slowing down and I finally took a break. Although I didn’t have much money, I really wanted to buy a little gift for Shelly so that she’d know we appreciated her support.
I got to a store just as they locked the door. “We’re closed!” cried the tired clerk. I looked around, noticing all the stores had already closed. I was really upset. I had been working all day and had missed buying her a present by one minute.
On my way back to the Santa booth, I saw Nordstrom was still open. Fearful that they would also close at any moment, I hurried inside and toward the Gift Gallery. I found other shoppers were all well-dressed and wealthy; I was a poor teenager in an elf costume. How could I find anything under fifteen dollars in such an elegant store
A saleswoman came over, asking if she could help me. Then, everyone in the department turned around and stared. Quietly, I said, “No, that’s okay. Just help somebody else.” She looked right at me, smiling, “But I want to help you. By the way, I’m Stephanie.”
