W: Oh, no! It’s wise for him to call out sick then. It would be terrible if everyone in the office got sick too. If my daughter Hannah gets ill then my husband will need to stay home with her, since I cannot take off so many days. How are your kids
M: The kids are good. Karen is home with them while she is still on her work break from having the baby. Graham and Sarah are both starting piano lessons next week, though.
W: I’m sure Karen has her hands full at home with the twins and the baby Peter.
M: Oh, yes. Even though she is tired, she still smiles so wide when I come home. I am envious that she gets to spend so much time with kids. I always make sure our weekends are full of fun activities I can do with them, because by the time I get home they are almost ready for bed. Usually we just watch a movie together till they fall asleep.

My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today’s grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip-gen travel — grandparents taking fun-filled vacations with grand kids without their parents along.
A survey found that 83% of grandparents put travel with their grand kids as the number one thing when they retire. Skip-gen travel gets popular for good reason. Kids have their lives enriched and learn outside classrooms. This is also a time of talking and sharing ideas.
“How grandparents talk to children is different from how parents talk to them. Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children,” Annie Collins, a travel architect and also part of the trend, says. “Kids away from their parents are more open to ideas and willing to express themselves. It’s not just kids gaining from traveling. Who gets the most out of this You might think it’s them but it’s us.” According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, grandparents who help watch and spend time with grand kids may actually live longer than their peers(同龄人).
It’s also important to recognize that grandparents often have more time to travel. Unlike their children, who may still be in the pursuit of a personal career that offers limited time off, grandparents are often retired and likely have a different viewpoint on life, prioritizing experiences and family. So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves — some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries.
However, skip-gen travel is not for every grandparent. After all, grandparents are worn out with years and not so energetic. They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it’s wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved.
24. Why does the author mention fishing experiences with his granddad
A. To lead in the trend of skip-gen travel. B. To share the pleasure in going fishing.
C. To stress the importance of family ties. D. To show the growing interest in adventure.
25. Which of the following may Annie Collins agree
A. Many parents are too strict with children.
B. Grandparents benefit more from skip-gen travel.
C. Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D. Children become mature when away from parents.
26. What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip-gen travel
A. They enjoy the moment to relax. B. They feel less anxious and stressed.
C. They miss their kids very much. D. They look forward to their own trip.
27. What does the author suggest grandparents do
A. Get kids involved in travel planning. B. Strengthen the bond with grandchildren.
C. Reduce skip-gen travel appropriately. D. Make decisions in both sides’ interests.
A 25. B 26. A 27. D
根据第一段的“My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today's grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip-gen travel(我小的时候,爷爷经常帮我做一个捕鱼的工具,我们会在河边呆上几个小时。那时候对我们俩来说都很美好。如今,越来越多的祖父母有了一种越来越强烈的冒险意识。一种趋势正在兴起:跨代旅行)”可知,作者提到自己小时候与爷爷一起抓鱼的经历是为了引出如今祖父母辈与孙辈之间新的相处模式,即跨代旅游。故选A。
根据第三段的“Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children(事实上,我觉得我和我的孙辈比我和我自己的孩子更平等)”以及“It’s not just kids gaining from traveling.Who gets the most out of this You might think it's them but it's us(这不仅仅是孩子们从旅行中获得的。谁能从中获益最多?你可能认为是他们,但其实是我们)”可以推断出,身为祖母和跨代旅游的实践者,Annie Collins认为祖父母辈从跨代旅游中受益更多。故选B。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves- some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries(所以知道孩子们被照顾得很好,父母们就会有一些属于他们自己的时间——一些他们急需的闲暇时间来休息和充电)”可知,当孩子与祖父母外出旅游时,父母也能拥有自己的休闲时间,用来放松和休整。故选A。
根据最后一段的“They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it's wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved(他们肯定会珍惜这个与孙辈建立亲密关系的机会,但当只有年轻人可以享受时,明智的做法是说不,因为这趟旅行对参与其中的每个人都应该是一个胜利)”可知,作者认为跨代旅游应该是一件双赢的事,只有对祖父母和孩子都有利时才应进行,由此可知,作者建议祖父母做有利于双方利益的决定。

Although the weather is very hot now, the carnival of ice and snow is getting closer. The preparation work for Beijing Winter Olympic Games, which are expected to begin on Feb 4, 2022, has entered its final stage. In January, 2021, the ice-making work on the Ice Ribbon, a landmark venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed.
In the Winter Olympics, where races can be won or lost by a small-time gap, tiny imperfections in the ice can make a big difference. “It’s not just a hunk of ice like you’d normally think of, like ice cubes sitting in your freezer,” told Kenneth Golden, a US mathematician who studies the structures of ice. “It’s a much more fascinating and complex substance than people would normally think.”
The first step for building any ice rink is to purify the water to remove dissolved solids like salts and minerals. Such impurities don’t fit in the regular hexagonal (六边形的) structure of ice that forms as water freezes. The purer the water is, the more consistent the ice surface.
In addition to the need for excellence in the raw materials of ice-making, technology is also very important. As one of the most advanced technologies for winter sports venues, a carbon dioxide (CO2) cooling technology has been applied on a large scale for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. CO2 is not new when it comes to ice-making. However, it has been gradually replaced by the man-made refrigerant (制冷剂) like Freon.
With increasing attention toward climate change, the old refrigerant has come into use again. As an element of the atmosphere, CO2 doesn’t damage the ozone layer. Although CO2 is a greenhouse gas, its greenhouse effect is much lower than that of other man-made refrigerants. The Winter Olympics venues adopted CO2 instead of Freon as a refrigerant in ice-making, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions greatly.
“We believe these technological innovations will bring Beijing 2022 to spectators all over the world in a more impressive way,” told Gao Bo from the Media Operations Department of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
28. What is the result of impurities in water for ice-making
A. The water isn’t able to freeze completely.
B. The quality of the ice will be affected.
C. The ice surface will be more consistent.
D. It’s likely for athletes to fall on the ice.
29. Why has CO2 cooling technology been applied for the Winter Olympic Games
A. It’s the most advanced technologies for ice-making.
B. CO2 is more efficient than other refrigerants.
C. CO2 is more environmentally-friendly than Freon.
D. CO2 has already existed in the atmosphere.
30. What is Gao’s attitude to CO2 being applied to ice-making
A. Unclear. B. Opposed. C. Doubtful. D. Favourable.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. The Beijing Winter Olympic Games Is Coming.
B. Beneath Olympic Ice.
C. The Use of Refrigerants in Olympic Games.
D. The Structure of Ice.
B 29. C 30. D 31. B
根据第三段“Such impurities don’t fit in the regular hexagonal structure of ice that forms as water freezes. The purer the water is, the more consistent the ice surface.”(这些杂质不适合水结冰时形成规则的六边形冰结构。
根据倒数第二段“As an element of the atmosphere, CO2 doesn’t damage the ozone layer. Although CO2 is a greenhouse gas, its greenhouse effect is much lower than that of other man-made refrigerants. The Winter Olympics venues adopted CO2 instead of Freon as a refrigerant in ice-making, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions greatly.”(作为大气的一种成分,二氧化碳不会破坏臭氧层。
根据最后一段“We believe these technological innovations will bring Beijing 2022 to spectators all over the world in a more impressive way”(我们相信,这些技术创新将以更令人印象深刻的方式将北京2022年冬奥会带给世界各地的观众。)
根据第一段“In January, 2021, the ice-making work on the Ice Ribbon, a landmark venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed.”(2021年1月,北京冬奥会标志性场地“冰带”的制冰工作已经完成。)

A Europe-wide study has found that the drying out of soils across the continent as the planet heats up is leading to the deaths of more and more trees. “European forests are suffering,” says Jan-Peter George at Tartu Observatory in Estonia. “It needs to be made clear to everyone in Europe, whether you are in the north or the south, that this will become a huge problem.”
There is already growing data showing that the lack of underground water due to climate change is killing off more trees in Europe. But most previous studies have focused on particular areas or been based on satellite (卫星) surveys, where it is hard to know whether a tree has died or been cut down.
George and his team have instead studied about 3 million on-the-ground observations made as part of a program called ICP Forests, which was set up in the 1980s. Using this data set meant the team can manage not to include tree deaths due to being cut down.
The researchers found that annual mortality rates (死亡率) are rising for all tree species. Norway spruce (挪威云杉) has been hardest hit, with mortality rates 60 percent higher on average between 2010 and 2020 than between 1995 and 2009. For Scots pine, rates are up 40 percent, European beech 36 percent, and oak 3.5 percent. What’s more, for all species and regions, annual mortality rates have been positive since 2012. A positive annual mortality rate means that more trees are dying than usual, compared with the long-term average. “This could mean that European forests reached an extremely important point in 2012,” says George.
A lack of water due to global warming is far from the only threat (威胁) to Europe’s trees. Diseases have been damaging most trees in Europe. Wood harvesting has also increased by 50 percent since 2016.
32. What does the underlined part “a huge problem” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Soil drying in Europe. B. Europe’s trees dying.
C. Europe’s rising temperature. D. Widening regional differences in Europe.
33. What is special about the study done by George’s team
A. It focuses on selected areas. B. It examines more exact data.
C. It carries out more satellite surveys. D. It has done follow-up studies for 40 years.
34. What has happened since 2012
A. All tree species have been dying more than usual.
B. European beech populations have hardly changed.
C. Many more oaks have been planted in some regions.
D. Scots pine has been in more danger than Norway spruce.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Influences of global warming. B. Increases in wood harvesting.
C. Treatments for forest diseases. D. Possible causes of tree death.
B 33. B 34. A 35. D
根据第一段“A Europe-wide study has found that the drying out of soils across the continent as the planet heats up is leading to the deaths of more and more trees.(一项全欧洲范围的研究发现,随着地球变暖,整个欧洲大陆的土壤变干,导致越来越多的树木死亡。)”
根据第二段“But most previous studies have focused on particular areas or been based on satellite (卫星) surveys, where it is hard to know whether a tree has died or been cut down. (但此前的大多数研究都集中在特定地区或基于卫星调查,很难知道一棵树是死亡还是被砍倒。)”和第三段“George and his team have instead studied about 3 million on-the-ground observations made as part of a program called ICP Forests, which was set up in the 1980s. Using this data set meant the team can manage not to include tree deaths due to being cut down.(相反,乔治和他的团队研究了作为20世纪80年代建立的ICP森林项目的一部分所进行的约300万次地面观测。使用该数据集意味着研究团队可以设法不包括因砍伐而导致的树木死亡。)”可知,乔治团队的研究的特别之处在于,它能够测量更精确的数据。故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The researchers found that annual mortality rates (死亡率) are rising for all tree species. (研究人员发现,所有树种的年死亡率都在上升。)”和“What’s more, for all species and regions, annual mortality rates have been positive since 2012. A positive annual mortality rate means that more trees are dying than usual, compared with the long-term average. (更重要的是,自2012年以来,所有物种和地区的年死亡率都是正的。正的年死亡率意味着与长期平均水平相比,更多的树木比往常死亡。)”可知,2012年以来,所有树种的死亡都比平时多。故选A。
根据最后一段“A lack of water due to global warming is far from the only threat (威胁) to Europe’s trees. Diseases have been damaging most trees in Europe. Wood harvesting has also increased by 50 percent since 2016. (全球变暖导致的缺水远非欧洲树木面临的唯一威胁。疾病一直在破坏欧洲的大多数树木。自2016年以来,木材采伐量也增加了50%。)”可知,最后一段主要讲的是树木死亡的可能原因。故选D。

The great advice on making friends
Jonah would never forget how he managed to overcome his shyness and make new friends all because of the timely advice he had followed a month ago. He remembered that day clearly.
The bell for the break resounded through the corridors at Glendale School. Instead of heading to the canteen like the other children did, Jonah fled to the library. He pushed open the door and headed for the nearest bookshelf. Other than the noise of the air-conditioner, the library was quiet and there was barely a soul in sight. Far in a corner, he spotted the librarian, who seemed too busy shelving some books to pay any attention to him. The windows to the library looked out to the canteen. Jonah could hear children laughing and chatting. He wished he was outside playing with some friends but he did not let this bother him.
Suddenly, Jonah heard a sound in the corner. He turned around and saw the librarian walking towards him. “Hi, I’m Mrs Lim.” she greeted him with a smile.
“Um...hi, I’m Jonah,” Jonah said, his face flushed red with embarrassment.
“Why are you reading here when you could be playing with your friends instead ”
“Uh...” Jonah looked around the library, avoiding her gaze. He did not want Mrs Lim to know the real reason why he was in the library. She had the same look in her eyes as Jonah’s father during the quiet car rides home from school. Jonah was helplessly tight-lipped whenever his father asked whom he had played or eaten with at school. From his silence, Jonah’s father knew he was lonely. It was not that Jonah did not have any friends. They all just happened to live really far away. Jonah would stay up late at night chatting on the computer with his old friends from his previous school. Somehow, it made him feel close to them despite the distance. Transferred to this new school, Jonah found it difficult to make new friends. Everyone seemed to have different interests and their own circle of friends.
“I know how you feel,” Mrs Lim said gently, as if she could read Jonah’s mind.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just then, in the hallway outside the library, a boy from Jonah’s class happened to be picking up something on the floor, with difficulty.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“I know how you feel, ” Mrs. Lim said gently, as if she could read Jonah’s mind. “Once I was moving to a new place, alone and miserable.” Mrs. Lim reminisced. Jonah listened attentively and intently. “But then, one of my classmates broke her leg and needed someone to make up for the lost classes. With the final exam approaching, however, no one was willing to help. So, I stepped in, offering my notes and helping her review. Our friendship thus formed, matured and grew fully fledged.” Jonah listened with reverent awe. “So, Jonah, find someone who needs help, and your flower of friendship will surely blossom!”
Just then, in the hallway outside the library, a boy from Jonah’s class happened to be picking up something on the floor, with difficulty. Fully enlightened by Mrs. Lim’s advice, Jonah flew out, squatted down and helped the boy pick up his scattering handouts. As the two boys exchanged their names, their conversation flew into other aspects of their life. Almost unbelievably, they lived in the same block, shared the same hockey coach and went to the same cello class! The more the two boys hung out, the better they were acquainted, and the wider Jonah’s world became. See what a tremendous magic a simple suggestion can work!
