Three lifeguards were hailed as (被誉为) heroes last night after they rescued dozens of teenagers from the sea. The quick action and bravery of the lifeguards saved several of the youngsters from certain death.
The group of thirty-six youngsters were on an outdoor activity holiday in West Wales. On Saturday afternoon, the group, accompanied by four adults, went down to the sea. Some of them did not know how to swim and had never seen the sea before the trip. They were taking part in an exercise to help build confidence and teamwork. As part of the exercise they were walking backwards into the sea. At the time the tide (海潮) was out and the water was not deep. The tide began to come in and the group started walking back to dry land. Suddenly the sandbank underneath them collapsed (坍塌) and the sea flooded in. Some of the teenagers were soon in dangerous waters.
Fortunately, three lifeguards were nearby and came to the rescue. David Miller, manager for the local coastguard, said that although the sea was fairly shallow, it was still very dangerous in that sea. “It is just fortunate that the brave lifeguards were quickly on the scene and lucky that lives were not lost,” he added.

Sometimes, kids feel that they don’t like sports because they may not understand how to play them or they haven’t had much practice. Sports may seem tough because of all the rules and special equipment. Even the fields and courts sports are played on come in different shapes and sizes and have confusing (让人糊涂的) lines drawn on them.
People usually need to spend many years learning about their favorite sports and practicing how to play them well, so don’t feel bad if you don’t know the difference between a “corner kick” and a “goal kick” in soccer. If you want to learn more, you can go to camps or take part in activities that introduce kids to new sports. These may be better than just joining a team that starts playing games right away without much explaining first.
Gym classes and programs at school can also be good ways to try new sports with a mix of kids. But you need to focus your attention. Some of my students just don’t listen to me carefully when I explain the rules to them. They prefer to come back to me when they run into difficulty.
Another way to learn about a sport is to watch instructional videos that explain the rules and offer advice.
If you have an older friend or family member who’s good at a certain sport, you might ask him or her to help you practice. Some sports may seem easy to understand, but once you begin to play them, you’ll have great difficulty. Therefore, having someone teach you and play with you will be a good choice.
8. The underlined word “tough” is closest in meaning to “_____”.
A. unimportant B. useless C. dangerous D. difficult

【17题详解】
空格处是本段主题句,根据下文“Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this world.(你是否希望最终你会因为你的生活比他们的好而感到有力量?要知道你的生命是你自己的;你是这个世界上唯一的你。)”可知,本段主要讲述不要把自己和别人作比较,因为生活是我们自己的,我们也是世界上独一无二的,F选项“Stop comparing yourself with others.(不要拿自己和别人比较。)”说明了不要去和别人比较,概括了本段主要内容,可作为主题句,故选F。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I couldn't believe that my father shouted at me and called me a fool! In all my 18 years, I'd never heard him say anything like that to anyone. But then, I had never shouted the words "I hate you!" in his face, either. I guess we were both pretty angry. I had been saving money from my part-time job for three years and now I wanted to use it to buy a car. He wanted me to save it for college expenses.
I knew that we both needed time to cool off. I left him sitting at the kitchen table, ran down the stairs to the driveway, and jumped on my bike. I headed for the road that runs along the river. It's usually pretty quiet there and I've found that it's a good place to go to when l need to think something out. Riding along, I kept thinking over and over, "But it's my money! I earned it!" Little by little, I calmed down. Circling back toward town later, I stopped in the park. I had a drink of water and decided to avoid Dad for the rest of the day.
He must have had the same idea—about avoiding me, that is. He didn't come up to my room to say goodnight, and I didn't go downstairs. I couldn't get to sleep that night. I kept going over our argument in my mind. He felt I didn't really need a car. After all, I could use his anytime I wanted to. In addition, he paid for my driver's insurance and bought all the gas. It's just that all my friends were buying their own cars and I wanted one of my own. I really wanted that car. I finally fell asleep and when I woke up I didn't really change my mind. But I felt a little better.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Suddenly, I didn't know what to say.

A. unimportant B. useless C. dangerous D. difficult
9. Which of the following ways of learning about sports is NOT mentioned in the passage
A. Going to camps that help you to learn about a certain sport.
B. Watching videos that teach how to play a certain sport.
C. Reading books that explain how to play a certain sport.
D. Asking a friend to practice with you.
10. The author of the passage is probably _____.
A. a health expert B. a PE teacher
C. the headmaster of a school D. the manager of a sports club
11 What would be the best title for the passage
A. How to Learn to Play a Sport. B. Sports Are Good for You.
C. Why Do We Play Sports D. Sports Are Hard to Play.
D
Scientists have designed (设计) a new machine——a robot which looks like the famous scientist Albert Einstein. It can recognize and respond to human emotions. The robot is made of special material that allows it to change facial expressions. The material that makes up the robot’s face is so detailed that it looks like real human skin.
The robot’s designer chose Einstein, the Nobel Prize winner, because he was one of the greatest scientists of all time. They also chose Einstein because his face is very well known and he appears “loveable”.
Dr. Hanson, who designed the robot, explained that it was important to develop machines that know what human beings are feeling.
The robot uses computer software that helps it to understand hundreds of human expressions such as sadness, fear, and happiness. It can also recognize a person’s age, whether they are male or female. Mr. Movellan, who designed the software, said that in the future, the robot could be in museums to help people from different cultures to understand one another.
12. What do we know about the robot
A. It can recognize and respond to human emotions.
B. It can develop new machines for children.
C. Its colors can be changed easily.
D. Its material is very common.
