Vincent Willem van Gogh is a great Dutch painter. In 2017 one of his paintings was sold for $81 million. 2021 seemed to be Vincent Willem van Gogh’s year. There were at least five different exhibits in nearly 40 U.S. cities regarding his works. It’s very surprising to know he sold only a few paintings in his lifetime, for only little profit (利润). How did this now-famous painter fail to escape attention after his death It was probably thanks to a woman.
Six months after Van Gogh died, his beloved brother Theo passed away, who had expected to make his brother’s works well-known. Fortunately, Theo’s wife Johanna van Gogh-Bonge, as an English teacher at two different girls’ schools before her marriage, was left with their son and a sizable art collection. She decided to help Theo’s wishes come true. “During her lifetime, she devoted herself to raising awareness of Vincent’s art and letters,” says Luijten, the author of Johanna’s lifetime story.
Johanna tried all her best to improve Van Gogh’s name. To do this, she chose some of his works to sell and encouraged writers and art critics to write about his paintings though she was refused many times. Johanna didn’t lose heart. She lent some pieces to well-known museums and organized countless exhibitions and sales. “One of Johanna’s major achievements was the organization of an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 1905, where she collected no less than 484 of Van Gogh’s works. A Van Gogh exhibition of this size would never again be matched,” Luijten explains. Another particular move happened in 1914 when Johanna published Van Gogh’s letters. Theo had kept hundreds of letters. “This was of great importance, as following the publication of the letters, the appreciation of Van Gogh as an artist increased further,“ says Luijten.
“There’s little doubt that although Van Gogh was great, he wouldn’t be remembered to the level seen today without the influence of Johanna.” said Luijten.
4. What appears unbelievable about Vincent van Gogh according to the author

B. His attending many different art exhibitions worldwide.
C. His becoming well-known because of a woman’s efforts.
D. His paintings bringing little money for him in his lifetime.

A. She married Theo in 1905.
B. She was creative with a strong will.
C. She was a famous painting collector.
D. She was once a teacher in an art school.
6. What does Luijten mainly stress through his words in the last paragraph
A. The greatness of Van Gogh’s.
B. The challenge faced by Johanna.
C. His appreciation of Johanna’s efforts.
D. His doubt about Van Gogh’s influence.
7. What does this text mainly talk about
A. The great life story of Van Gogh.
B. The woman making Van Gogh known.
C. The contribution of Van Gogh’s brother.
D. The popularity of Van Gogh’s paintings.

An era in which an Alzheimer’s diagnosis can begin in a doctor’s office is now arriving. The new technology can detect early signs of disease from a blood sample, which is helping doctors to identify the memory-robbing disorder more accurately.
Last fall, a blood test developed by C2N Diagnostics in St. Louis, Mo. , became available to most of the U.S. as a routine lab test. It has also received a CE mark as a diagnostic medical device in the European Union — indicating it has met safety, health and environmental protection standards for the region.
The C2N test, called PrecivityAD, uses an analytic technique to detect specific types of B-amyloid, a protein fragment that is a pathological (病理学的) feature of disease. B-amyloid proteins accumulate and form plaques (斑块) visible on brain scans two decades before a patient notices memory problems. As plaques build up in the brain, levels of -amyloid decline in the surrounding fluid.
Such changes can be measured in spinal fluid (脊髓液) samples — and now in blood, where -amyloid concentrations are significantly lower. PrecivityAD is the first blood test for Alzheimer’s to be cleared for widespread use and one of a new generation of such assays that could enable early detection of the leading disease — perhaps decades before the onset of the first symptoms.
8. According to the passage, which can help doctors identify Alzheimer’s
A. hair. B. blood. C. skin. D. tongue.
9. What is the function of B-amyloid in the brain
A. To decline in the surrounding fluid. B. To form plaques visible on brain scans.
C. To accumulate and cause memory problems. D. To serve as a pathological feature of disease.
10. What does the underlined word “assays” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Tests. B. Trials. C. Treatments. D. Analysis.
11. What does the author think of the PrecivityAD
A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Pessimistic.

Paper is one of our oldest, simplest and most important inventions. But it also presents a danger to the world in two significant ways. First, the making of paper requires the loss of millions of trees each year. Between 2001 and 2019, the world lost 386 million hectares of forest. Of the trees that were cut down, 42% went to paper production. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot sustain such a high rate of forest loss.
The second great problem with paper is what happens once it is no longer useful. A huge quantity of wastepaper ends up in dumps and landfills (垃圾填埋场), where it can produce harmful gases. Paper in landfills leads to the release (释放) of methane, a gas that is a significant contributor in global warming.
One simple solution can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Paper is mainly made from cellulose (纤维素), which makes up the cell walls of trees and many other plants. Because of its structure, cellulose can be used repeatedly in papermaking. So far, trees are the only source of cellulose that can fill the massive demand for paper products. Therefore, recycling paper is simply one of the best ways to save trees.
Thanks to advances in processing, recycled paper isn’t the dull-colored stuff many of us are familiar with any more. It now can offer the same print performance as non-recycled paper.
Effective recycling requires a consistent effort. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be carried out. The massive loss of trees affects everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industries to do the same.
12. What does the author want to express in paragraph 1
A. Consequences resulting from forest loss.
B. The significance of paper in daily life.
C. The disadvantages of current paper production.
D. The severe situation caused by papermaking.
13. Why is paper in landfills harmful
A. It releases smelly gases. B. It results in global climate change.
C. It pollutes the nearby land. D. It may lead to fire accidents.
14. What can we know about paper-recycling
A. It produces cellulose to make more paper. B. The structure of cellulose makes it possible.
C. The color of recycled paper is different. D. It produces cellulose without using trees.
15. What’s the purpose of this text
A. To introduce paper recycling technology. B. To stress the threat of global warming.
C. To appeal to people to recycle paper. D. To describe the considerable need for paper.

Mr. Smith, my 10-grade English teacher, was one of the teachers who I would never forget and the story between Mr. Smith and me was the most amazing one I wanted to share.
When I was young at school, I loved talking, which was not always appreciated by Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was a teacher whom no one liked because he was too strict. He stood about 5.5 feet, was very thin and wore his hair pulled back in a way that gave him a horsey (像马的) look. Whenever he got upset, he would lower his head and look at you over the top of his glasses.
One day in his class I was busy talking. I didn’t realize he had stopped teaching, staring straight at me. “Tom, I would like to see you after school.”
Later Mr. Smith explained in a low, but very firm voice that showed he expected me to listen when he was talking. For punishment he told me to write a1000-word essay (文章) on education and its effect on the society. He wanted it in by the following Wednesday.
Well, I met my deadline (最后期限). I was confident. It was a good paper. And I expected a sign of praise from him. The next day in class, however, he was looking at me over his glasses. He called me forward and returned my paper. “Go back and rewrite,” he said. “Remember, each paragraph is supported to begin with a topic sentence.” When he gave my paper back a second time, he corrected the grammar. The third time, the spelling. The fourth time, it was punctuation. The fifth, it wasn’t neat (整洁的) enough. I was sick!
The sixth time, I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving enough space. When he saw the paper, he removed his glasses, and accepted it with a smile. After that, I put the whole thing out of my mind.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One morning after three weeks, Mr. Smith came into the class happily

D The severe situation caused by papermaking.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. C

Later, Mr.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】范文
One morning after three weeks, Mr. Smith came into the class happily. He said, “Class, do you still remember the essay contest held in our school Now the result has come out. I am glad to tell you that Tom has won first prize with the title ‘Education and Its Effect on the Society’.” Then cheers of praise rocked the whole classroom. After class, many classmates asked me how I made it. I told them that it was not because of my good writing skills but it was all because of the six-time rewriting required by Mr. Smith.
I sat in my own seat, excited and grateful. It was the first time I had ever won a prize. Years later, I told many people that story, and my comments, including my unfriendly description of Mr. Smith’s appearance. Unexpectedly, Mr. Smith wrote to me, and said his look wasn’t important. What was important was the lesson I had learned from him. When I wrote and rewrote that essay, I began to learn how to behave well. I was grateful for the lesson he had taught me.
