With her exit to care for a family member, Sluhan, a preschool art teacher, will help her students show their artworks in her last art show with the school. The preschoolers hold a display each year, allowing the parents an insight into what they have been doing in the classroom.
On Thursday, the school will be closed for Sluhan to change it into an art gallery featuring hundreds of the students’ pieces. “Before, we would just put paintings up in classrooms, taped to the walls,” said director Seely. “Now, the school will be completely changed. You won’t even know it’s a preschool.”
Sluhan thinks that it is important for the children to explore several different methods of art. She has broken with the traditional way of teaching. The preschoolers experiment with different materials and colors to learn what they like and also appreciate art. Seely says there has been an increase in the students’ interest in art since Sluhan joined the preschool six years ago. Many of the young students have listed “artist” when asked what they want to be when they grow up.
The kids receive one hour of art each week from Sluhan, and she tries to fill each hour with enriching material to create a foundation for their education. She believes that the lessons help the children become appreciative of art. They are better able to recognize that art is not one particular thing.
In practice, the art show is a visual way for parents to understand some of what the students have learned. It’s also a way for the kids to show off.
For the past six years, Sluhan has put in a lot of work to create the art program and the art show as they are now. With her leaving, a new art teacher will continue with the art shows and the curriculum Sluhan has established.
4. Why will the art show be Sluhan’s last one
A. She is about to quit her post. B. The art class will be called off.
C. The school is about to be closed. D. She will go to teach in another school.
5. What is Sluhan’s art class like
A. Unproductive. B. Unpractical. C. Fruitful. D. Conventional.
6. What is Sluhan’s purpose of introducing art to preschoolers
A. To help them enjoy art. B. To inspire them to be artists.
C. To offer them a chance to show off. D. To cater to their parents’ preferences.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Art Lessons: Understanding Kids B. An Art Teacher: Keeping Teaching
C. An Art Show: Parting with Students D. Artworks: Featuring Preschoolers’ Personalities
C
The average life expectancy of the Bolson tortoise (龟), North America’s largest and rarest tortoise species, is unknown. But scientists say the animals could live more than 100 years. They are an endangered species. Saving them from extinction is a long-term project. But a conservation effort took a step toward that goal months ago.
Wildlife officials in the U.S. reached an agreement with the Turner Endangered Species Fund. The deal permits the release of Bolson tortoises on land owned by Ted Turner a media industry leader. The release of the captive tortoises on the Armendaris Ranch is designed to create a free-wandering population. Months ago, 20 adult tortoises were released on the property, which is already home to 23 of them. There are also many younger tortoises.
The tortoises usually spend about 85% of the time in burrows, which can be about 20 meters long underground. With the places to live, the animals live long lives and are slow to reproduce.
Shawn Sartorius is with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. He thinks it will take a long time to see the results of the breeding and restoration project, which, to be honest, won’t be seen in his lifetime. “What we’re doing here is establishing a population here that can be handed off to the next generation,” Sartorius says. Scientists estimate the wild population of Bolson tortoises in Mexico is under 2,500. Experts say the animals are hunted as food and pets. Their habitats are becoming smaller, as more desert grasslands become farmland.
The Armendaris Ranch appears to be a great area for the tortoises. In all, the Turner Endangered Species Fund and its partners have been able to grow the population. In fact, the releases are the essential step to getting them back on the ground and letting them be wild tortoises. The goal is to build a strong imprisoned population that can be used as research for future releases into the wild — both in America and Mexico. That work will include getting state and federal permits to release the tortoises outside Turner lands.
8. What is uncertain about the Bolson tortoise
A. Its release time. B. Its main habitats.
C. Its extinction cause. D. Its average lifetime.
9 What does the underlined word “burrows” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Caves. B. Groups. C. Projects. D. Grasslands.
10. What can be inferred about the tortoises from what Sartorius said
A. Our next generation won’t protect them.
B. The effect of rescuing them will be slow.
C. Human activity has made them endangered.
D. There is little hope to restore their population.
11. What does the author express in the last paragraph
A. The failure of tortoise population growth.
B. The importance of releasing the tortoises.
C The difficulty of imprisoning the tortoises.
D. The goal of the government’s researching tortoises.

Imagine a flying dragon using water to put out a fire. Thanks to a team of researchers, this new kind of “beast” may soon join firefighter teams around the world.
The blueprint of this new and different firefighter robot, called the Dragon Firefighter, has been published in Frontiers in Robotics and AI. And as it has been published as Open Science, roboticists around the world may freely use the plans to build their own Dragon Firefighters, for the benefit of all. “We here present the first type of a four-meter-long, remotely controllable flying fire hose (消防水管) robot, engineered to safely and efficiently put out fires in buildings by directly approaching the fire sources,” says Yuichi Ambe, an assistant professor at Osaka University.
The Dragon Firefighter’s fire hose is driven upward by eight controllable jets of water from its center and head. The fire hose can change shape and move towards flames, operated by a control unit in a wheeled cart (手推车) behind. The cart is connected through a supply tube to a fire truck with a water reservoir of 14,000 liters. The fire hose’s tip contains an imaging camera, which helps to find the location of the fire.
The Dragon Firefighter successfully put out the ceremonial flame at the opening ceremony of the World Robot Summit 2020 (WRS2020), consisting of fireballs lit by another robot, at a distance of four meters. Besides detailing its design, the present study also discusses lessons learned during this first demonstration of the Dragon Firefighter’s abilities, as well as explaining further improvements made since.
Other improvements detailed in the study include better waterproofing, a nozzle (喷嘴) unit capable of handling a wider range of net forces and an improved mechanism for channeling water flow. But further developments are in the pipeline.
“We estimate that it’ll take about 10 more years to use our robot in real-world firefighting scenes,” says Ambe. “It’s worth the effort. Despite some advancements, we’re not satisfied. The primary challenge will be to extend its reach to beyond 10 meters. Developing effective firefighting strategies tailored to this robot’s unique capabilities will also be a critical aspect of further development. But we’ll surely make it.”
12. Which feature is expected of the Dragon Firefighter
A. To be blue-colored. B. To be free of charge.
C. To be novel and efficient. D. To be traditional and safe.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly introduce about the Dragon Firefighter
A. Its shape and size. B. Its working locations.
C. Its operating principle. D. Its strengths and weaknesses.
14. What did the Dragon Firefighter do at WRS2020
A. It lit fireballs. B. It showed its capabilities.
C. It fought with another robot. D. It put out a four-meter-high fire.
15. What is Ambe’s attitude to the development of the Dragon Firefighter
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Proud. D. Ambitious.

Earlier in the year, as a group of young and ambitious men, we set out plans for a butterfly garden on an area of greenspace right in the heart of the village. We intended to provide a place for students from nearby schools to learn about nature.
I, the group leader, first drew up a plan showing my ideas and thoughts, where we would depend on donation for us to buy wildflower seeds. As it turned out, my partners, the other group members, had other plans.
While we were waiting to see if our funding would come through, Butterfly Conservation Scotland offered us enough wildflower mix seeds to cover the whole of the area which we’d marked on our plan. But the problem was that the seeds would have to be sown (播种) within the next two weeks, which also meant that the weeds in the area should be removed before we could sow seeds. Then I went to ask the nearby farmers whether they could use their machines to remove the weeds, but no one had time to lend a hand.
It was suggested that we buy a machine. But without much money, where could we find a machine to remove the weeds When we didn’t know what to do, a teacher called Lily from a nearby school approached us and asked if we needed some help. I told her the truth about the situation. “My father is a farmer and has his own machine. Don’t worry, I can get him to help,” she said. We thanked her several times for it.
On Sunday, as expected, Lily’s father brought a weeding machine and removed the weeds in person. Meanwhile, all the group members including me were busy in the field. Considering the tight schedule, I sent out a call on the Internet for volunteers to help. One of my partners joked, “No one will have the time to help us for free, so let’s pick up the weeds ourselves.” I believed there were many helpful people around us, so I just smiled back.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The deal permits the release of Bolson tortoises on land owned by Ted Turner, a media industry leader.
9. What does the underlined word “burrows” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Caves. B. Groups. C. Projects. D. Grasslands.
10 What can be inferred about the tortoises from what Sartorius said
C. The difficulty of imprisoning the tortoises.
D. The goal of the government’s researching tortoises.
D 9. A 10. B 11. B

故选A项。
根据第四段中Sartorius所说的话“What we’re doing here is establishing a population here that can be handed off to the next generation (我们在这里做的是建立一个可以传给下一代的种群)”可知,Sartorius认为目前所做工作的成果将在下一代那里得到体现。
根据最后一段“The Armendaris Ranch appears to be a great area for the tortoises.

C To be novel and efficient. D. To be traditional and safe.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly introduce about the Dragon Firefighter
A. Its shape and size. B. Its working locations.
C. Its operating principle. D. Its strengths and weaknesses.
14. What did the Dragon Firefighter do at WRS2020
A. It lit fireballs. B. It showed its capabilities.

The next year, I gathered Lily and her students in the garden.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Just then, Lily came, followed by her students. They heard about our butterfly garden project and were eager to lend a hand. Lily explained that she had spoken to her students about the importance of conserving our environment and they were excited to be part of a practical project that would make a difference. With their help, we began the task of sowing the wildflower mix seeds. The students eagerly spread the seeds across the cleared area, their smiles reflecting a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It was heartwarming to witness young minds embracing the beauty and wonder of nature.
The next year, I gathered Lily and her students in the garden. The once barren land was now a vibrant haven for butterflies, buzzing with diversity and color. The students, now a year older, displayed a deeper understanding and appreciation for the ecosystem they had helped create. Looking around at the flourishing butterfly garden and the smiling faces around me, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of pride and fulfillment. Our humble endeavor blossomed into something much greater than we had initially envisioned. It became a symbol of the immense power of collective action in preserving our natural world.
