The African Children’s Choir(合唱团) is made up of children who are 7 to 10 years old from Africa. They have incredible voices and spirit that amaze the audience everywhere they go!
And they go to a lot of places, all around the world. And not only do they travel a lot,but they perform with some superstar singers and celebrities for heads of state. But this is not what makes the choir so special.
Like New York’s PS22,they do not just sing, but truly put their hearts, souls and bodies into their words. But what is unique about the choir is that it offers hope, education and confidence to children who live in extreme poverty. For example, the kids in the choir are mostly from the poorest countries in the world, such as Uganda. Many children live in one-room homes and walk more than 2 miles to get water for their family. Most of the children have lost one or both of their parents because of wars or diseases.
Through its music and education, the African Children’s Choir changes the lives of its children. It allows them to see the world. It gives them hope and confidence. It shows them that everything is possible. The choir even pays for their education through college. In 30 years,it has educated and changed the lives of over 50,000 children. And,in turn, the children return to their hometowns with new thoughts and new skills to help improve their family and community. These children are truly helping to build a better Africa.

What makes a person a giver or a taker The idea of“give vs. take” takes shape in all interactions(互动) and relationships of our lives. We’re either giving advice, making time for people,or we’re on the receiving end.We keep changing between the two based on different situations on a daily basis,if not an hourly one.
According to Adam Grant,a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, most people are matchers. They make careful observations on takers and make it a point for them to pay something back. They hate to see people who act so generously towards others not receive any rewards.Actually, most matchers will try hard to improve and support givers so that they can get the good they deserve.
Is there a gender factor that plays a part in this
A study led by Hannah Riley Bowles,a professor at Harvard University, focused on this question. She asked 200 senior managers to sit down in pairs where one person would act as the boss and the other as an employee to discuss a salary rise.Male“employees” asked for an average salary of $146,000,while the females asked for only $141,000.But why did they not bargain as hard as the men Simply because they were more likely to be givers.
As a woman,I do enjoy the act of giving up my time,my knowledge, and my care and attention to others.I expect anything in return, but I do tend to pull myself away when I feel like I’m being taken for granted.I also tend to get upset when I see a loved one’s continuous actions of kindness go unnoticed. So,it’s safe to say I’m 50% giver,35% matcher and 15% taker.
I do know someone, however, who is 99% giver. They’re continually devoting their time, sharing valuable insights and going out of their way for everyone who crosses their path.Although they’ve changed the lives of many people, they hardly see any of it returned. But the universe is slowly repaying them;they’re now extremely successful, well known for what they do.
5.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.Most people think they are givers.
B.People are not always givers or takers.
C.An individual is born to be a giver or a taker.
D.Few differences exist between givers and takers.
6.What can we learn from Grant’s opinion
A.Most people hate takers.
B.Most people prefer giving to taking.
C.Most people enjoy relying on themselves.
D.Most people balance giving and taking.
7.What did Hannah’s study focus on
A.The role of giving and taking in jobs.
B.The gender difference in giving and taking.
C.The role of men and women in society.
D.The salary difference between women and men.
8.Which of the following represents the author’s point of view
A.Giving is the shortest path to success.
B.Sharing is the greatest human quality.
C.No good deed goes undone.
D.Givers are worth respecting.

One of my fondest memories of travel is when I spent a few months in 2019 backpacking in Eastern Europe. From Poland to Ukraine, every country I visited exceeded my expectations. However, the place that I will never forget is Romania. It is a big country in Eastern Europe with little recognition.Additionally,I was surprised to find such unexpected kindness in the capital of Bucharest.
The first day I arrived in Bucharest from Brasov,I had to take the bus from the train station to my accommodation.I boarded the bus and found that none of my cards worked and I wasn’t able to buy a ticket.I was stopped by patrols on the bus and fined for not having a ticket, even after explaining that it wasn’t my intention and I had just arrived from Brasov.Despite showing them my train ticket and the fact that I was carrying my Osprey 55L backpack with me,they still didn’t believe me and fined me.
After doing some research online,I found that most buses in Bucharest are outdated and do not accept cash or any form of payment on board. You have to purchase a card at certain places in the city, top it up with money, and then pay onboard. The buses connecting to the airports are more modern. You can use wireless pay to purchase a ticket.I was delighted after finding out such good news as I did not want another fine.
Fast forward to my last day in Bucharest,I was taking the bus to Bucharest Airport. When the bus arrived,I got on and could not find the ticket machine as the bus was inundated(淹没) with people.People were standing like sardines in a can.I made my way towards the center of the bus with my big backpack and found the ticket machine to be the same as the one I had encountered on my first day in Bucharest.I tried every method.Nothing worked.I started to panic.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Over the next 20 years,we are going to send more and better robots to Mars. Those robots will send back better pictures, maps, samples, and weather reports. There is a limit to what robots can tell us,though,so eventually we will have to send people to study the planet. Before people can visit Mars,we need to invent a spaceship that can take us there.Mars is very far away.Depending on where Mars and Earth are in their orbits (轨道) around the sun,it could take between six months to a year to get there.
The moon is much closer, and we were there,25 years ago.Over the next 10 years,we are going to work on building a new spacecraft that can go to the moon.Using this craft,we will practise the skills we need to go to Mars.
Once we get to the moon,we are going to build a station so that people can live and work on the moon for months at a time. This is important so that we have a place to start from when we want to visit Mars, but it is also important because it gives us practice with living away from Earth.
By the time you are old enough to be an astronaut,we will have people spending months on the moon.By the time you are old enough to be a commander of a space mission we will be taking trips to Mars.By the time your kids are old enough to be astronauts,we may have people living on Mars.Wouldn’t it be cool to get a postcard from someone who was building a house on Mars Wouldn’t it be cooler if it was you who sent the postcard
1.We eventually have to send people to Mars because .
A.the pictures that robots have sent back are not very clear
B.robots can’t tell us all we want to know
C.robots are controlled by us humans
D.the samples robots have sent back are not good enough
2.From the first paragraph we can see the distance between Earth and Mars .
A.is not always the same B.is nearly the same
C.is unchangeable D.never changes very much
3.A space station on the moon is important because .
A.people can learn to adapt to living on other planets
B.people can practise planting crops in it
C.the new spacecraft can only land in it
D.astronauts can practise skills they need to go to Mars
4.The author of the passage .
A.thinks that trips to the moon are an unrealistic dream
B.encourages kids to be astronauts
C.hopes to receive a postcard from Mars
D.is sure people’s dream of living on Mars will come true
B
July 20th,2009 was the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic flight to the moon, where astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first human beings to walk on the moon.40 years ago, space flight inspired such awe(敬畏) that astronauts were honoured as heroes and celebrities.40 years later none of us,besides space fanatics(狂热者),would likely to be able to name one astronaut in service today.
I got to thinking about the importance of continuing space exploration.I hear many people criticize the importance of NASA and space flight, most saying that it is a waste of time, and more importantly money.I disagree with such assessments.Space exploration is important not only to humanity’s curiosity of the great beyond, but it is also important for the future of the earth and all of us living on it.
The Apollo missions inspired a whole generation of kids who wanted to grow up to be astronauts, rocket scientists, and engineers. We all know that science education has been slightly lacking in the United States as of late.Don’t you think that NASA’s return to the moon,or more importantly the much anticipated manned mission to Mars will again inspire a whole new generation to reach for the stars so to speak I do.
You would think that the guys who burn a million pounds of rocket fuel wouldn’t be the most environmentally minded people in the world. However, most people don’t know that NASA does a lot of good environmental research while they are up there looking down at all of us.NASA has done a lot of work in studying air quality, climate change, alternative(可供替代的) energy, and near earth objects, which as we all know from the movies can destroy the earth any day now without warning, unless we have a group of oil drillers,a nuke, and Bruce Willis.
We cannot ignore the importance of space exploration, nor be complacent(自满的) in its meaning to all of us.I hope space exploration can continue to inspire, educate, and provide for us in the next 40 years as it has the last 40 years.
5.What can we learn from the text
A.Armstrong was the first man to fly in space in the world.
B.Science education for American students is highly developed.
C.The author considers space flight as a waste of money and time.
D.People today won’t admire astronauts as much as they did 40 years ago.
6.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Space exploration. B.NASA.
C.Money. D.Humanity.
7.How does NASA make a difference to the environment
A.By burning less rocket fuel.
B.By finding greener energy.
C.By changing climate.
D.By making space movies.
8.What’s the best title for the text
A.How to Be an Astronaut
B.Where to Study Flight
C.Why to Explore Space
D.How to Do Space Research

As Christmas decorations appeared in town, our parents called my two younger brothers and me together. At first,I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad.My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.
Mom hugged me as she murmured,“Christmas is going to be different this year.We won’t be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.”Dad,resting on the couch, beckoned(招手示意) the boys into his arms.“Things will change when I get back to work.”
My family was poorer than dirt.Dad,the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike,Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot.Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows,he didn’t talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work,no income.
At nine years old,I mothered my younger brothers:Rodney,aged six,and Stevie,three.We shared a small bedroom.That night,after our parents’ announcement,we talked.
Rodney began.“Em,did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked I thought Mommy was gonna cry.”
“Me,too.Daddy’s foot’s...this big,” whispered Stevie, holding out his arms.
“Yeah...We’re in hard times,” I said.“It makes Mommy and Daddy sad.”
“But we don’t have to be sad,” I added, hoping to brighten the mood.
“Since there are still several weeks to go,maybe we can do something to cheer them up,” I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed,“We can take the money from our piggy bank...earn some more...and surprise them with gifts!”
“I can run errands(跑腿) for Aunt Em and neighbors to earn money,” I offered.
“Yeah,” Rodney added,“I and Stevie can return bottles and save the deposit money...instead of buying candy!” He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow.
“Yeah!”Stevie clutched his hands together.
We had a plan!
Until they nodded off,I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret.“Don’t talk about it during the day.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission!
On Christmas morning,we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy.

A storm hit Houston,Texas,on Tuesday. It brought heavy rains and rising floodwaters.By Tuesday night, some parts of the city had received 10 inches of rain.Police and firefighters helped people move to safe places. They also saved people from cars and buses that were stuck on roads.
Certain areas around Houston were hit really hard.In just four hours, more than seven inches of rain fell in Sugar Land in the southwest of Houston.Cars could not pass through any of the area’s main roadways. On Twitter,Sugar Land city officials asked people to get to high ground.
Tuesday’s rain hit parts of Texas that Hurricane Harvey had already damaged almost two years ago.Hurricane Harvey in August,2017 was the second most costly hurricane in US history. It caused $125 billion worth of damage in Texas. In the Houston area,36 people died and about 150,000 homes were flooded.
A spokesman for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said that this week’s rain “is not in any way a Harvey-level event”.
But the worst may not be over yet.People will have a break from the heavy rain on Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, the Texas Gulf Coast will continue to experience heavy rain later in the week.“Today should be our quietest over the next few days for rainfall,”said Don Oettinger,a National Weather Service meteorologist(气象学家).
Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peia warned,“As there is too much water on the ground and flash floods are likely to happen,we hope people are careful of what they’re doing and encourage them to stay home. There’s no sense in putting yourself, firefighters or anybody in danger needlessly.”

The worsening air quality in tropical cities is causing ever greater threats to people’s health and this trend will only get worse as the urbanization is progressing quickly, scientists have warned. In a newly published study,a team of researchers explain that across all the 46 cities they surveyed from Africa to Asia, they have measured significant annual increases in pollutants harmful to health.
This trend is troubling as tropical cities usually lack proper air pollution monitoring measures and policies to deal with the problem.“These cities are predicted to reach populations of up to 80 million people by 2100,so actions targeting human-related pollution are badly needed,” the scientists stress.
Already the number of people dying prematurely(过早地) from long exposure to air pollution has been on the increase and people living in cities in South Asia are the worst affected. In Dhaka,Bangladesh, some 24,000 people die of such causes each year while around 100,000 people die in Indian cities such as Mumbai,Bangalore etc.
“The number of deaths in tropical cities in Africa is still lower due to recent improvements in health care there. But the worst effects of air pollution on health will likely occur in the coming decades,” the scientists say.
The reasons for worsening air quality in tropical cities lie in increasing road traffic, waste burning, and the widespread use of coal and wood.Industry is also partly to blame.“Open burning for land clearance in the past contributed most to air pollution in the tropics,” explains Karn Vohra,an author of the study.“Our analysis suggests we’re entering a new age when some cities experience rates of air pollution in a year that others experience in a decade,” Vohra warns.
5.What is the function of the numbers mentioned in paragraph 3

I Survived Being Caught In A Mudslide(泥石流)
It was May 2018,and my boyfriend,Gabe Smith, and I were driving from my home in Weyburn,to visit friends in Nelson.
At around 5:30 p.m.,we were driving along the Crowsnest Highway,a steep and winding mountain road.I was texting my mother when I happened to look up in time to see a huge tree in front of us on the highway. It was being pushed down by a torrent(洪流) of mud that was swallowing everything in its path.We didn’t know about the recent flooding in the area, and now we were trapped in it.Gabe and I looked at each other unbelievably and said,“Oh,god.” Within seconds, our car was rolling 30 meters down the cliffside(悬崖边).
I don’t know how long we were unconscious(昏迷的),but I woke up to the sound of Gabe moaning (呻吟).He lay beside me and his blood was everywhere.
Our car had landed on a small area among trees that had come down with the mudslide. On one side of us was the mountain. On the other,a steep drop of about 1,000 meters into a river.
I tried opening my door with a sharp pain in the chest. In addition,my left ankle had been broken.Gabe had broken his nose and cheek,as well as his chest bone, leaving him blind in his left eye and having difficulty in breathing.
As the doors were crashed out of shape, and my window failed to be opened, the only way out was through the driver’s side window.Although it was difficult and painful,we both managed to get out of it.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
We sat on a rock with no phone signal, realizing all we could do was shout for help.
With the help of them,we finally reached the highway at around 8:00 p.m.

Charles Darwin was a very famous scientist who lived in the 1800s.His ideas about evolution (进化) completely changed the way scientists understand the natural world. He recorded his ideas in notebooks marked with letters of the alphabet(字母表),which have been considered extremely important for showing how he developed the evolution.
The Cambridge University Library had several of Mr.Darwin’s notebooks. The two that were missing were kept in a small box,and were last seen in 2000.In 2001,someone noticed that the box was missing.Luckily, the library had taken pictures of the notebooks’ pages,so the information wasn’t completely lost.
In 2020,the library made a huge effort to find the notebooks.Workers searched through the 10 million books and other things in the library, but they didn’t find the notebooks. Finally, the library asked people around the world to help look for the notebooks. They officially reported the missing notebooks as stolen so that the police around the world would search for them.
Nobody could ever have expected the way in which the notebooks were returned recently:in a pink gift bag with a note that said “Librarian,Happy Easter,X”.People at the library quickly recognized the blue box that the notebooks had been stored in.Inside a brown envelope they found the two missing notebooks, tightly wrapped in plastic. After the police had examined the package, library workers were able to open and carefully study the notebooks. They were pleased to learn that the notebooks were in good shape. They hadn’t been damaged and they weren’t missing any pages.

On the side of a busy road leading into Dundee,on the east coast of Scotland, the blades(叶片) of a small wind turbine(涡轮机) move in the wind of passing cars and trucks. It is charging a battery that is below the ground. This is an invention by Sanwal Muneer,a young engineer from Pakistan.
Muneer was inspired to create the turbine as he stood on the side of a racetrack several years ago.“At first, the light wind from the cars was just a welcome relief from the heat,” he says.“Then I started to think about how we could use that energy.”
The turbine stands two-and-a-half metres tall.Made of recyclable carbon fibre,it weighs just nine kilogrammes, making it easy to transport and set up.The fully-charged battery can hold a kilowatt of electricity, enough to run two lamps and a fan for around 40 hours. The idea is that this could be a source of electricity for rural communities in developing countries,or could power traffic lights or road signs in urban areas.
Dundee City Council is the first local authority to allow Muneer’s company,Capture Mobility,to test the turbine beside its roads.“We want to help engineers create something inventive which is also beneficial to the city.” says Neil Gellatly, head of roads and transportation for Dundee City Council.Capture Mobility moved to Scotland from Pakistan in 2015.The Scottish government is investing(投资) in cleaner-energy technologies.Wind is also strong and plentiful all year round here. This made it a good location for Muneer’s company.
Production costs remain the company’s biggest challenge. The turbines must be affordable in developing countries, but achieving this will depend on commercial(商业的) scale(规模).Capture Mobility is now analysing data from the turbine.Later this year, the company plans to send the next stage of the design to the producers.“I am passionate about engineering,” Muneer says.“But engineering is only a success if it improves lives.”

It was late spring when my mom and I were driving through the countryside.Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom.However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car.Suddenly,in the middle of nowhere,my mom pulled over.“What are you doing ” I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there,so far from home.Fortunately, that wasn’t the case.My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat.“It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.
Impatiently,I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home.I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed,as my mom reappeared empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask,“Do you know someone there ” She shook her head.“Then what did you do with the flowers ” She smiled slightly,“I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).”“What ” She laughed at my confusion.“I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t received any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving,I spoke again,“Did you leave your name ” To this she answered instantly,“No.Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds,I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down!Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it,and we didn’t know where the garage was.It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by,since we had seen so few along the way.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
I let out a sigh while my mom rooted herself against the car worrying about what could be done.
As we drove along,a flower shop came into sight on the road.
