Paris Baker is a 30-year-old mother who has two daughters, Kallie, nine, and Harper, five.
One day, the three were playing at home. Harper was playing mom, feeding her mother, then her teddy bear and finally herself. Suddenly, Paris started choking on a piece of cookie. Soon, the cookie was at the back of her throat. The two girls started hitting her back at once. After about a minute of hitting her back, Kallie went to call an ambulance as she started to worry. As she did this the other girl carried on doing what she had been doing and thankfully the cookie finally came up.
Paris was diagnosed (诊断) with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2017, and was told she had five years to live. The condition will gradually paralyse (使……瘫痪) her, leaving her trapped inside her body.
Due to her condition, she’s more likely to fall and has received serious injuries. She felt it was very important to teach her girls what to do in a dangerous situation she might be in. This included applying pressure to a bleeding wound, what to do if someone is choking and how to call emergency services.
The girls know that if their dad isn’t home and an emergency happens there are three steps. Step one is to ring 999, ask for an ambulance and give their address. Step two is to put their dogs in the garden, and step three is to open the front door for the emergency services.
After the accident, Paris was so grateful that she had taught her daughters what to do in such a situation. But accidents like that can happen to anyone. So if your kid hasn’t learned first aid skills yet, it’s time to do that now.
4. How did the two girls react as their mother choked
A. They called an ambulance at once.
B. They took action as soon as possible.
C. They were too frightened to do anything.
D. They tried to carry their mother somewhere else.
5. Why did Paris teach her two girls first aid skills

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related (有关的) to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted (迎接) us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).
Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!”
8. What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Interest. B. Responsibility. C. Dislike. D. Misunderstanding.
9. What first made the author look forward to math class
A. Mr. A’s attitude.
B. Her interest in math.
C. Her friends’ encouragement.
D. The top achievers in her class.
10. How did the author feel about her talk over lunch with Mr. A
A. It was straight.
B. It was awkward.
C. It was challenging.
D. It was impressive.
11. How did the author change in math
A. She made slow progress.
B. She fell in love with math.
C. She became a straight-A math student.
D. She became comfortable with difficult math questions.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. A

【8题详解】
词义猜测题。根据上文“Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student.(从中学起我就不擅长数学。高中的时候,上课变得越来越难了,我离数学老师的梦想学生更远了。)”可知,从中学到高中,作者越来越学不会数学。画线词所在句中的“So”表明上下文为因果关系,作者学不好数学,所以“不喜欢”数学。划线词aversion与dislike意思相近,意为“不喜欢,厌恶”。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion(热情) not only for math but for teaching.(很明显,A老师不仅对数学有着真正的热情,而且对教学也有着真诚的热情。)”和“Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the ‘I can’t’ student.(他鼓励每一个学生,从最优秀的学生到‘我不能’的学生。)”可推知,A老师对数学科目和教学的热情以及对学生的鼓励让作者期待上数学课,即A老师对数学和学生的积极态度促使作者期待数学课。故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“My classmates began to do the same, and it became ‘cool’ to have lunch and talk with Mr. A.(我的同学们也开始这样做,和A老师一起吃午饭和聊天变得很‘酷’。)”可知,作者认为和A老师边吃午饭边聊天很酷,这说明作者对此感到印象深刻。故选D。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb.(虽然我的故事不是一鸣惊人的那种故事,我也没有成为一名数学全优的学生,但我的努力确实开始有了回报,我的成绩也开始慢慢攀升。)”可知,作者的数学慢慢进步了。故选A。

“The Last Dance”, the documentary, told the story of Michael Jordan and his success with the Chicago Bulls. We learned a lot about Michael Jordan and his championships. We took behind-the-scenes glimpses (一瞥) at what it’s like to compete in the NBA. We were given a glimpse into the ‘90s basketball era (时代) at a time when almost no sports are being played. But it also meant something for our culture, experts say.
Dr. Josh Shuart, the director of sport management at the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology at Sacred Heart University (Connecticut), told the Deseret News that the documentary showed something important for our modern society. Watching “The Last Dance” gave us something to look forward to during a time when there’s nothing else going on, he said. “Why is it important and why did people watch it The latter is simple: with the absence of live sports of any kind, it was probably the single most interesting thing on TV,” Shuart said in an email to the Deseret News.
Michael Jordan matters for sports culture, too. Jordan set the standard when it came to connecting athletes to brands (品牌) and brands to athletes. Athletes can take care of their brand during their careers and even well into retirement (退休) . Shaquille O’Neal is an example, Shuart said. The Los Angeles Lakers legend — though highly celebrated for his basketball career — has built post-basketball success through business opportunities.
There might not have been too much new content in “The Last Dance” for sports fans who grew up in the Jordan era. But storytelling still provides a path for us to find happiness, Shuart said.
“Above all, even though we know the beginning, middle, and end, the storytelling provides amazing insight and results in a very interesting story,” he said.
12. What is “The Last Dance” mainly about
A. The development of basketball in the 1990s. B. Michael Jordan’s growing-up experience.
C. The history of the Chicago Bulls. D. Michael Jordan’s success with the Chicago Bulls.
13. Why did the author take Shaquille O’Neal as an example
A. To prove that it takes athletes much hard work to be successful.
B. To show Michael Jordan’s great influence on other athletes.
C. To discuss why basketball means a lot to most people.
D. To compare Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal.
14. What does Shuart think of “The Last Dance”
A. It shows Michael Jordan’s unknown life. B. It cannot attract Michael Jordan’s fans.
C. It is encouraging and successful. D. It is boring for most people.
15. Where does the text probably come from
A. A documentary review. B. A business report.
C. An official notice. D. A TV guide.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

When Judy came back home, he couldn’t wait to tell Wendy all about her trip. But when she did, Wendy felt left out and jealous. She couldn’t help but feel like she had missed out on something interesting.

Wendy started to distance herself from Judy. After that she stopped answering her phone calls and texts. Judy was heartbroken that her best friend was no longer close to her. She tried everything she could think of to get Wendy to talk to her again.

The girls know that if their dad isn’t home and an emergency happens there are three steps. Step one is to ring 999, ask for an ambulance and give their address. Step two is to put their dogs in the garden, and step three is to open the front door for the emergency services.

A. It was straight.
B. It was awkward.
C. It was challenging.
D. It was impressive.

When Judy came back home, he couldn’t wait to tell Wendy all about her trip. But when she did, Wendy felt left out and jealous. She couldn’t help but feel like she had missed out on something interesting.
