Four months ago, OpenAI, a small San Francisco company, became the talk of the technology industry when it introduced a new online chatbot that could answer complex questions, write poetry and copy human emotions. Now the company is back with a new version (型号) of the technology, called GPT-4.
GPT-4, which learns its skills by analyzing large data from the Internet, improves on what powered the original ChatGPT in several ways. It can immediately know someone’s tax duties and provide detailed descriptions of images. However, though the new technology can do better on tests and offer precise medical advice to doctors, it can mess up basic arithmetic (算术).
On Tuesday, OpenAI started selling access to GPT-4 so that businesses and other software developers could build their own applications on top of it. A few companies are already working with GPT-4. Morgan Stanley Wealth Management is building a system that’ll immediately retrieve (检索) information from company documents, and serve it up to financial advisers in the form of conversations.
OpenAI got the new technology enhanced. As people tested ChatGPT, they rated the chatbot’s responses, separating those that were useful and truthful from those that weren’t. Then, using an advanced skill, the system spent months analyzing those ratings and gaining a better understanding of what it should and shouldn’t do.
Given a long article and asked to summarize it, GPT-4 will give a precise summary nearly every time. Moreover, given a photograph, chart or diagram, the technology can provide a detailed, paragraphs-long description of the image and answer questions about its contents.
OpenAI leaders said the company wasn’t immediately releasing the image description part of the technology because they were unsure how it could be applied for improper purposes. However, “We can take all these general-purpose knowledge skills and spread them across all sorts of different areas,” said Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president. “This takes the technology into a whole new field.”
8. What does GPT-4 need to make improvements in according to the text
A. Its describing skill. B. Its arithmetic ability.
C. Its copying capability. D. Its summary function.
9. Why is Morgan Stanley Wealth Management mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To give an example. B. To present a belief.
C. To explain an idea. D. To make a conclusion.
10. What does the underlined word “enhanced” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Replaced. B. Appreciated. C. Improved. D. Developed.
11. What was OpenAI’s worry about GPT-4
A. It may not understand what to do. B. Its technology could go into a new field.
C. It may not sell well as expected. D. Its image description could be misused.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据语境分析可知,Morgan Stanley所在句“Morgan Stanley Wealth Management is building a system that’ll immediately retrieve information from company documents, and serve it up to financial advisers in the form of conversations.(摩根士丹利财富管理公司(Morgan Stanley Wealth Management)正在开发一个系统,可以立即从公司文件中检索信息,并以对话的形式提供给财务顾问。)” 故选A项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。分析前后文语境可知,画线单词所在句为该段的中心主旨句,根据后文的阐述“As people tested ChatGPT, they rated the chatbot’s responses, separating those that were useful and truthful from those that weren’t. Then, using an advanced skill, the system spent months analyzing those ratings and gaining a better understanding of what it should and shouldn’t do.(当人们测试ChatGPT时,他们对聊天机器人的反应进行评分,将有用和真实的反应与没有用的反应区分开来。然后,使用先进的技术,该系统花了数月时间分析这些评分,并更好地了解它应该做什么和不应该做什么。)”可知,后文具体讲述了通过先进技术分析“反应评分”,聊天机器人进一步提升了自己的“是非认知”的过程。即,该段强调了其进步。由此可推知,“enhanced”应是“提升,进步”含义。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章末尾段内容“OpenAI leaders said the company wasn’t immediately releasing the image description part of the technology because they were unsure how it could be applied for improper purposes.(OpenAI领导人表示,该公司没有立即发布该技术的图像描述部分,因为他们不确定该技术如何用于不当目的。)”可知,OpenAI担心自己的图像描述技术会被用于不当目的。故选D项。

Since the rise in car ownership in the 1950s, the US has started building roads in cities and across the country to provide enough room for automobiles. Houston, like many cities, is turning back the clock to make room for passers-by, cyclists and parks.
Memorial Park in Houston, Texas was halved by the Memorial Drive Highway in the1950s. It has now been reunited. The highway is still there, but the road goes underneath the 1,500-acre park.
The restoration (修复) of Memorial Park is part of a larger plan that was made after the city suffered from a serious drought. It was thought that 80 percent of the forested canopy (树冠) was dead. One of the ways to fight that was to reintroduce native plants and animals.
The city hired the landscape architectural company, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, to work with the Houston parks and the Memorial Parks Conservancy. The architects, led by Woltz, were inspired by wildlife crossings in the Northwest US and explored the possibility of using this idea in Memorial Park. Over the years, the park was cut into 20 pieces that were divided by highways, roads and parking lots. The only crossing was a 12-foot bridge.
After 10 years of planning and constructing, the Kinder Land Bridge officially opened in early February, 2023. The bridge consists of 100 acres of greenery, and while designed for people, has reconnected wildlife corridors (廊道). The reconstruction added 45 acres of native Gulf Coast prairie (草原) that’ll increase biodiversity in the park. “This project is not just about creating a passage or a bridge. This project is about ecology, it’s about biodiversity and water management. This project is a bridge into Houston’s future.” said Shellye Arnold, president of the Memorial Park Conservancy.
12. What led to the restoration of the Memorial Park
A. A company’s suggestion. B. A terrible natural disaster.
C. The demand from the public. D. The recovery of native plants.
13. How did wildlife crossings in the Northwest US affect the architects
A. They knew how to restore the Memorial Park.
B. They got the inspiration for rescuing animals.
C. They gained a sense of achievement for working.
D. They developed a new way to protect the landscape.
14. What do we know about the Kinder Land Bridge from the text
A. It is about 12 feet in length. B. Its aim is to save water.
C. It benefits the wild animals. D. Its birth is a short process.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. A Highway Connects a Park in Houston
B. The Importance of Building Land Bridges
C. Efforts to Restore Parks in American Cities
D. Houston Creates a Creative Way to Restore Nature
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D

I grew up in southeastern Michigan. I was a fan of Detroit Tigers, a famous baseball team, as a young boy.
My childhood dream was to be like my hero, Al Kaline, and someday play for the Tigers. My Dad would take me to Tiger Stadium several times a year and my hero Al Kaline would never let me down. We never attended a game that he didn’t get at least one hit.
I was crazy about baseball. If there was a game in my high school, I was never absent. I kept practising so that I could achieve my dream of playing for the Tigers, and I was doing well at each level of play. Later, I got a chance to sign up for a strong American Legion baseball program. There I met our coach, Bob Ohm, who knew a lot of baseball and taught each of us the basics as well as more advanced baseball skills. With Bob Ohm’s help and my hard work, I had set new records in many baseball championships.
My dream to be like my hero seemed to draw near. One summer, I went up to play the final season in Marinette. There were scouts who came to find the best players. This was it! My big chance!
Well, as the game progressed I hit the ball very well getting five hits in the game. Unfortunately, I also made four mistakes. The final mistake actually drew laughter from the crowd.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
After the game, I knew my dream of playing professional baseball was lost. I was depressed at the time about the loss of my dream. I talked with my coach Bob Ohm about my failure. He shared the way he became himself now and comforted. “There can be many kinds of dreams in life. As long as you never give up, you can have the chance to realize your dream. The key point is that you need to maximize your strengths and be who you really are.” Thinking of my coach’s words, I decided to continue to play and practise to achieve my next dream of being a baseball teacher in a school.
Today, I teach baseball in a high school. The relationships that I have enjoyed with the students and athletes through the years are things that no one can put a price tag on. Although my early dream to play baseball for the Tigers didn’t come true, it created a new dream for me to be a teacher. I am proud of what I am doing because I can help the young go beyond their dreams with my most positive influence on them.

D
