Dear Tom,
Thank you for your letter! I am glad that you will travel to China soon. And I know you have no ideas about the customs of visiting friends and table manners in China. Don’t worry, let me tell something about them.
In China, we usually make plans to visit our friends, and we seldom drop by a friend’s home without calling first. It’s also a good idea to take some small gifts when visiting our friends.
As for the table manners, I think they may be a bit different from those in your countries. Firstly, we use chopsticks instead of forks and knives while eating, and you’re not supposed to point at anyone with your chopsticks, it is considered to be impolite. Secondly, it’s impolite to make noise while eating. Thirdly, you’re not supposed to start eating first if there are older people at the table, that’s very important.
Anyway, I’m sure you’ll get used to all these things in China. Have a good time!
Yours,
Li Lei
