The young man was very careful and learned all the prescriptions (药方) which his teacher had taught him by heart. When the old doctor treated the patients, the young man stood beside him quietly and listened carefully.
As time went by, the old doctor thought it was time to let the young man have a try to diagnose (诊断) patients. So he often asked the young man to diagnose the patients by himself.
