The beautiful island country of Madagascar has a serious school shortage.About a third of Malagasy children have no access to education because the schools are too far away or severely overcrowded.Thinking Huts,a non-profit dedicated to increasing global access to education, plans to tackle the issue with a series of 3D-printed schools, the first of which was completed in April 2022.
The 765-square-feet structure, named Bougainvillea, will house 30 students. The construction began with the printer pouring a cement-like (水泥状) mixture in a pattern to create the walls. The entire process took just 18 hours! The roof, doors and windows were locally sourced, and the walls were made of a cement mixture that can resist big environmental pressures in the area.Bougainvillea was 3D printed by 14 Trees,a company with experience printing buildings throughout Kenya and Malawi.
Maggie Grouts, the 22-year-old founder of Thinking Huts,is a senior at the University of Colorado and was just 15 when she started Thinking Huts.Adopted from a rural village when she was 18 months old,Grout realized that not all kids were as fortunate as her and wanted to help. The idea for the 3D-printed schools came to her after brainstorming(集思广益) with her father on ways to use the technology for the greater good.
The 3D printing approach shrinks the construction turnaround time from months to days,as well as the cost. This allows more schools to be built in less time and reduces the building’s carbon footprints. And these savings in time, cost and materials meet a real need for education infrastructure (基础设施) to help bridge the global opportunity gap.
“Thinking Huts hopes to have a Thinking Hut in every community where children do not have a place for education and is fundraising to develop this goal.By using 3D printing,we are combining the potential of technology with architectural solutions that tackle real problems the world faces within education,” says Grouts.

The pace of today’s working life blurs(使模糊)the line between personal time and work time, and it increasingly mixes personal lifestyle and work style. And as companies are trying hard to attract and keep young people for their technical skills and enthusiasm for change, office culture is becoming an extension of youth culture. This may not be a bad thing. For most of human history the middle-aged have ruled, but in the future, they will have to share power with fresh-faced youths.
There have been a number of reasons for this change and the most dramatic of these is technology.Children have always been more expert than their parents at something, but usually a game or a fashion, not the century’s most important business tool. The Internet has started the first industrial revolution in history to be led by the young.Though there have been youth revolutions before, none of them made a big change the way the Internet has.Throughout the 20th century,if a young person wanted to enter an American company they needed to leave their youth behind. They got a haircut, and probably a suit or at least a tie.Now the same hair, same clothes, even nearly the same hours apply to office and home.
If it had not been for the Internet, this change could not have happened. However,it did not happen because of the Internet only; the corporate restructurings(公司重组) of the 1980s and 90s broke down traditional hierarchies(等级制度).In many companies,seniority-based(基于资历的) hierarchies have been replaced by hierarchies based on performance. The abilities to please your superiors are no longer the most valued skills.Today’s employees stay with companies only as long as they feel challenged and rewarded; moving from a job to another job is now a sign of ambition.
The rise of the young is a good thing, because it gives them more opportunity to put their ideas and energy into practice at their most creative stage in life.Nowadays youth and youth qualities seem to dominate, but the experience and maturity of older employees should be put to good use, too.
8.In the 20th century,to enter an American company,a young person needed to .

Wrinkles of confusion rippled across Holly’s forehead as she opened the gift from her best friend,Susan.
“I...I thought you could use it for something.” Susan’s stammered explanation did nothing to help us understand why a twelve-by-eighteen-inch dark-blue carpet remnant(残余物) was being presented as a birthday gift.
Holly,my daughter, tried bravely not to allow her disappointment to show. She laid the carpet on the kitchen counter, and the two girls headed outside to play.
The next morning,I carried a kitchen bag outside. My heart ached as I saw Susan’s carpet lying in the trash can.Hesitating only a moment,I reached in and picked it up.After giving it a light brushing,I brought it into the house and placed it in the hall closet.Occupied with the business of daily living, the carpet was soon forgotten.
Prior to Holly’s birthday,Susan had been a regular visitor in our home.On several occasions, she rode the bus home with Holly and was one of the few friends ever permitted to stay over on a school night. But now I realised it had been nearly three weeks since we’d even heard mention of Susan’s name.I missed her warm smile and eager-to-please ways.
One day,Holly had arrived home from school.“Susan invited me to come over to her house after school tomorrow,” she announced as she took her books down on the kitchen table.Although her voice carried a so-what attitude,I sensed she was pleased by the invitation.
Arrangements were made, and the girls rode home together on the school bus the following day.As I negotiated the winding country road that led to her house,Susan chatted nervously about her foster mom and the seventeen cats she had taken in and cared for.Soon we arrived at Susan’s house.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
A woman wearing a shapeless sweater stood in the doorway to greet us as we approached the small shabby farmhouse.

Hearing my words about everything of Susan,Holly sat silently in the car, with her head stretching forward as if willing the car to move faster.

A woman wearing a shapeless sweater stood in the doorway to greet us as we approached the small shabby farmhouse. When we stepped inside, appearing into our sight were stuff lying everywhere and a hall poorly decorated with used furnishings.Shocked by this,Holly took a quick glance at Susan, whose cheek had already become flushed. But it didn’t take long for the girls to forget about it and dash out to have their fun.Susan’s mom treated me a drink and shared with me her fondness for Susan as well as the poor girl’s past, which got my heart deeply struck. As daylight began to fade,we offered our thanks for the visit and said good-bye.On the way home,I decided to tell Holly all about Susan.
Hearing my words about everything of Susan,Holly sat silently in the car, with her head stretching forward as if willing the car to move faster. No sooner had we arrived home than she raced directly towards the trash can in the kitchen.Standing next to the trash can and peering inside for a while, apparently she got nothing she wanted.Seeing that,I went inside and headed for the hall closet.“Is this what you were looking for ” I placed the carpet in front of her.“Thanks!Mom.” A tear or two slipped from her eyes and dropped onto the remnant.Holly held it tightly in her arms, which I believed, was the most precious birthday present she’d received in the world.UNIT

Our house was across the street from a hospital. We rented the upstairs rooms to outpatients at the clinic. One summer evening as I was preparing supper, there was a knock at the door.I opened it to see a truly awful looking man hardly taller than my eight-year-old daughter.
But the frightening thing was his swollen face.He told me he’d been hunting for a room since noon but no one seemed to have a room. For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me:“I could sleep on the porch(门廊).My bus leaves early in the morning.”
I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready,I asked him to join us.“No,thank you.I have plenty.” And he held up a brown paper bag. When I had finished the dishes,I went out to talk with him for a few minutes.
He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, who was hopelessly disabled, and her five children. He didn’t tell it by way of complaint. In fact,he was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease. He thanked life for giving him the strength to keep going.
At bedtime,we put a small camp bed in the children’s room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded and the man was out on the porch. He refused breakfast, but just before he left,he smiled,“Your children made me feel at home.Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don’t seem to mind.” I told him he was welcome to come again.
In the years he came to stay overnight with us,there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or vegetables.Other times we received packages. After we knew that he must walk three miles to mail these and how little money he had made, the gifts become more precious.I know our family will always be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude.

Bloggers(写博客的人) are sometimes accused of being egomaniacs (After all, what could make one more proud than to assume that the whole world is interested in your thoughts ) and some are the source of ridicule. With more than half of all blogs on the Internet written by under-19s,parents are increasingly worried that their youngsters are putting their personal safety at risk.
Perhaps parents should focus on the positive. For a lucky few, blogging has led to fame and fortune on a scale that most people can only dream of.One of the best-known of these is Maisie Lim,whose fashion blog Style Cookie is read by such famous people as Miuccia Prada,Anna Wintour and Lady Gaga.Maisie is regularly invited to top fashion shows around the world and has thousands of fans.

Besides updating her blog,Maisie spends time running a web magazine for teenage girls and employs four editors as well as numerous writers, illustrators and photographers.
For more inspiration, look at Suke Smith’s lifestyle blog Pay it Forward.Due to the success followers on the Internet. At 16,Suke is considered experienced on the blogging scene.
Despite the success of the teenage bloggers like Maisie and Suke,it can be tough for teens to be taken seriously because of their age.“But if you’re offering something a bit different, and you’re passionate about what you do,people will notice you,” explains Maisie.

Alex Elman runs a big business—something hard to imagine after she lost her sight in her twenties. But Elman says that losing her sight helped her focus on finding success.
Elman’s father planted a hillside vineyard in western Massachusetts in 1981.It’s where Elman fled during the darkest period of her life. When she was 27 years old,she went blind due to complications from juvenile diabetes(幼年型糖尿病) 17 years ago.She recalled,“I hid in my home.I hid in the place,to me,that was the safest place in the world.”
Elman is now the founder of Alex Elman Wines,a growing portfolio(股份) of organic wines from all around the world:Chianti from Italy,Torrontes from Argentina.Elman doesn’t work alone. Her assistant,a guide dog named Hanley,is something of a wine snob, and quite a beggar.Hanley travels to all of the wineries that Elman does, from South America to Europe.

I am Li Hua,a senior 2 student in our school.Knowing that our school newspaper has launched a “Art of the Week”column recently,I am writing to recommend my favorite traditional art form,Peking Opera.
As one of the most influential art forms in China,Peking Opera is crowned as the pearl of Chinese culture. It is a form of audiovisual art that combines drama, dancing, mime, acrobatics and costumes, which could date back to Qing Dynasty.I highly recommend it for not only it enjoys a high reputation among us Chinese, but also it serves as a carrier of Chinese culture.I believe the introduction of it is bound to promote our splendid culture and enhance our cultural confidence.
I sincerely hope that you could take my recommendation into consideration and feature Peking Opera in the column.Looking forward to your favorable reply.

The great thing about libraries is that they house all types of books—from mysteries to biography and dramas—all in one location. The bad thing about libraries is that they house all types of books in one location, and if it’s a location you cannot get to,you are out of luck. Now,mobile library solutions are appearing quickly around the country to bring books to people who need them.
A few years ago, when the Little Free Libraries Movement kicked off, more people of all ages could have access to books. Now,more than 15,000 free book stands can be found across the globe, bringing books to unexpected places. But many folks are simply not in a position to get to the places where the books are.Bookmobile buses are a good solution, but they can be expensive to fund and to operate.
Books on Bikes programs are popping up in areas where there is a strong bike culture,in some regions like Seattle,or a strong need to bring books to the masses, for example,in San Francisco.
The Seattle Public Library’s Books on Bikes program consists of three bike/trailer combos(组合) that librarians bring to community events. The trailers are even Wi-Fi enabled so that visitors can sign up for a library card and browse(浏览) the library’s card catalogue on the spot.
“Seattle has a really strong bike culture so we want to tap into that and provide full-service library programs but do it in a way that is quick and smart,” librarian Jared Mills said in an interview.
San Francisco’s program, called Bibliobicicleta, was launched in 2013 by librarian Alicia Tapia. Her trailer can hold about 100 books and attracts readers of all ages and income levels. It’s an independent,donation-based library—like a Little Free Library, but on wheels.
When asked why she would start a free library on a bike,Tapia answers,“Why not Bikes are cool, and can go anywhere.”

Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”.I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying,“Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents,I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter,or something that required a little more work such as taping padding(衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”.When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday,I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realised that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him.I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right,or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection,I know that I’m doing the right thing.I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
4.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule
A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.
5.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to .
A.keep her appointment with the eye doctor
B.meet her father who was already an old man
C.join in the holiday celebration of the company
D.finish her work before the deadline approached
6.How does the author buy herself peace of mind
A.By keeping herself busy.
B.By always doing the urgent thing.
C.By accompanying her parents every day and night.
D.By doing everything possible to avoid something unpleasant.

When homework and tests keep you up late at night, you may plan to make up for your lost sleep during the weekends. But is it useful
A study published in the journal Current Biology shows that the habit of sleeping on weekends doesn’t fix the damage that has been done by a lack of sleep during the week.Even worse,it may damage your health.
In the study, which was conducted over 10 days,36 healthy young men and women with different sleep requirements were divided into three groups. The first group were asked to sleep nine hours a night and the second group five hours a night. The members of the third group slept for five hours on weekdays but rested as long as they wanted on the weekend.
The researchers found that people who lacked sleep ate more snacks and gained weight quickly. However, this wasn’t the case for the first group.
That could be partially due to the shifting of the biological clock and changes to certain body hormones, especially hunger hormones. In order to catch up on their sleep during weekends, people in the third group would eat later as a habit. So their biological clocks shifted, which also changed the production of hunger hormones.
“The hormone leptin(瘦素) decreases appetite(胃口),while the hormone ghrelin(胃饥饿素) increases appetite,” explained US researcher Vsevolod Polotsky.“Sleep shortage causes the leptin to drop and the ghrelin to rise,so you’re hungry and eat more.”
And even if they tried to sleep for as long as they wanted to during weekends, according to researchers,it was still not enough because they found it difficult to fall asleep.
Moreover, short and insufficient sleep schedules will lead to an inability to change blood sugar and increase the risk of metabolic(新陈代谢) disease in the long term.
7.What do we know about the study
A.Participants were divided into two groups.
B.Researchers studied 36 children and adults.
C.It lasted for more than two weeks.
D.Each group follow different sleep requirements.
8.What does the underlined word “shifting” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Increasing. B.Lacking.
C.Changing. D.Shortening.
9.Why may people without enough sleep eat more
A.They need to create more energy.
B.There is less leptin in their bodies.
C.They have a lower blood sugar.
D.Their bodies produce less hormones.
10.What can be a suitable title for this passage
A.Appetite Affects Our Sleep Quality
B.Sleeping in Causes Weight Loss

Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is,says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts,a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores.“The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says.“They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes,at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing,flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden.Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes.“We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens.Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues.“They get outside,” she says,“and they feel successful.”

Many people truly want to help a friend who is in pain. But words often fail us at times like these, leaving us stammering(结巴) for the right thing to say. Some people are so afraid to say or do the wrong thing that they choose to do nothing at all. 1 There’s no one perfect way to respond or to support someone you care about, but there are some good ground rules.
2 You are not supposed to be a central figure when your friend feels sad.You may say you would have done things differently if this unlucky thing had happened to you.Of course,I hope you don’t get the chance to find out.The unhappiness belongs to your friend. So follow their lead.
Keep in mind that being with someone who is in pain isn’t easy.Your friend cannot show up for their part of the relationship very well, and you will likely get hurt.Don’t take it personally. 3 In fact, one of the best things you can do for a friend in sorrow is to forecast their needs.Don’t say,“Call me if there’s anything I can do,” because your friend will not call. What you should do is to make concrete offers:“I will stop by each morning on my way to work and take your dog for a quick walk.” Then show up and do it.
4 Hug your friend, rub their back, and touch their fort them with small physical gestures that let them know you care and calm them.
Give them hope.Give your friend hope that things will eventually get better. 5
A.Show your love.
B.Keep your friend at ease.
C.Instead,please be tolerant of them.
D.Remember to play a supporting role.
E.After all,the future will be full of hope.
F.Their heart will heal and life will go on.
G.That’s certainly an option, but it’s not often a good one.

根据最后一段第一句中的“but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality”可知,为了获得内心的平静,少留下遗憾,作者尽可能做到未雨绸缪。

根据下文中“...changes to certain body hormones,especially hunger hormones.”
根据倒数第三段最后一句“Sleep shortage causes the leptin to drop and the ghrelin to rise,so you’re hungry and eat more.”
根据第一段第二句“And at first it is,says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts,a school garden program at...”
根据第二段倒数第二句“They come to us thinking vegetables are awful,dirt is awful,insects are awful.”
1.G 上文讲在面对需要安慰的朋友时,一些人因担心说错话或做得不合适而选择什么都不做,下文“There’s no one perfect way to respond or to support someone you care about, but there are some good ground rules.” G项“That’s certainly an option, but it’s not often a good one.(这当然是一个选择,但通常不是一个好选择。)”中的That指代上文“choose to do nothing at all”,“but it’s not often a good one”引出下文,在该段中起承上启下的作用。故选G项。

3.C 上文“Keep in mind that being with someone who is in pain isn’t easy.Your friend cannot show up for their part of the relationship very well, and you will likely get hurt.Don’t take it personally.”
语意相关,其中“Show”指的就是文中“Hug your friend,rub their back,and touch their arm.”行为。故选A项。
5.F 上文“Give your friend hope that things will eventually get better.”主要是说给朋友希望,让朋友明白一切最终都会好起来,F项“Their heart will heal and life will go on.(他们的心会自愈,生活也会继续。)”
