You know the feeling—you have left your phone at home and feel anxious,as if you have lost your connection to the world.“Nomophobia” (无手机恐惧症) affects teenagers and adults alike. You can even do an online test to see if you have it.Last week, researchers from Hong Kong warned that nomophobia is infecting everyone.Their study found that people who use their phones to store, share and access personal memories suffer most. When users were asked to describe how they felt about their phones, words such as “hurt” (neck pain was often reported) and “alone” predicted higher levels of nomophobia.
“The findings of our study suggest that users regard smartphones as their extended selves and get attached to the devices,” said Dr Kim Ki Joon.“People experience feelings of anxiety and unpleasantness when separated from their phones.” Meanwhile,an American study shows that smartphone separation can lead to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
So can being without your phone really give you separation anxiety Professor Mark Griffiths, psychologist and director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University, says it is what is on the phone that counts—the social networking that creates Fomo (fear of missing out).
“We are talking about an Internet-connected device that allows people to deal with lots of aspects of their lives,” says Griffiths.“You would have to surgically remove a phone from a teenager because their whole life is ingrained in this device.”
Griffiths thinks attachment theory, where we develop emotional dependency on the phone because it holds details of our lives,is a small part of nomophobia. For “screenagers”,it is Fomo that creates the most separation anxiety. If they can’t see what’s happening on WeChat or Weibo, they become panic-stricken about not knowing what’s going on socially.“But they adapt very quickly if you take them on holiday and there’s no Internet,” says Griffiths.
28.Which of the following may Dr Kim Ki Joon agree with
A.We waste too much time on phones.

C.Addiction to phones makes memories suffer.
D.Phones and blood pressure are closely linked.

A.We worry we may miss out what our friends are doing
B.We fear without phones we will run into a lot of trouble
C.We are accustomed to having a phone on us
D.We need our phones to help us store information
30.Which of the following phrases has the closest meaning to the underlined phrase “ingrained in” in paragraph 4

C.Opposed to. D.Determined by.

Australian experts have expressed concerns that too many millennials (千禧一代) are hoping to use their social media accounts to build their careers.
Their concerns follow the sudden rise in “Insta-celebrities” who make money by posting sponsored (赞助的) photos online. For the lucky few who are not only talented photographers but also good-looking and business-savvy (有商业头脑的),making money on social media isn’t impossible.
Instagram is flooded with social media professionals paid to promote products and services. However, social scientist Lauren Rosewarne, from the University of Melbourne, says that in reality, there are far fewer people making money on the platforms than one may think.
She said many young Australians were getting sucked in by the appeal of making money on platforms like Instagram, describing it as “totally unrealistic” and extremely difficult to do.
“Young people are hoping to be famous in numbers that were simply not there 20 years ago,” Rosewarne told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Saturday.“There are some people who can make fortunes out of monetising (使具有货币性质) their Instagram posts, but that is not the norm.”
She said it was up to parents and schools to discourage students from seeking Insta-fame,as many believe it is a possible career choice.“There’s the warning for parents; this is not a normal or even common occurrence that you can monetise your Instagram account.”
Meanwhile Toni Eager from Australian National University said social problems could arise from spending too much time on social media.
“Where do the Insta-celebrities go to separate the life people see on Instagram from their actual normal life ” Eager said.“All of a sudden, people own your private life.”
32.Why is there a rise in “Insta-celebrities”
A.Many young people are good at taking photos.
B.Many people see it as a shortcut to making money.
C.People want to socialise by sharing photos online.
D.Instagram offers a reliable career choice for millennials.
33.What does the underlined phrase “getting sucked in” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Becoming involved in. B.Benefiting from.
C.Taking advantage of. D.Being satisfied with.
34.What message does the author convey by quoting Lauren Rosewarne
A.Young people today are more business-savvy than ever.
B.Young people are becoming less interested in Internet fame.
C.Instagram is not a good platform to promote new products.
D.It’s a bad idea for young people to try earning money on Instagram.
35.What problem does Toni Eager think overuse of social media could cause
A.An over-reliance on Instagram. B.Inability to appreciate life.
C.A loss of personal privacy. D.An addiction to the virtual life online.

Our family was Christmas shopping in a large department store, when our nine-year-old son,Bradley, shouted,“Money!” Rolled up with a rubber band(橡皮带) was a large amount of cash, apparently dropped unknowingly by its owner.
He was excited, but my husband told him,“Someone else is very sad about losing this money.”
I added,“Yes,and the person who lost it may be wildly looking for it now.”
Then we asked,“How would you feel had you lost the money ”
“I think I’d be sad and maybe even sick to my stomach,” he admitted.
I asked,“Do you think you should keep the money or turn it in to the manager ”
It wasn’t an easy decision. He frowned(皱眉),“Turn it in.”
“But,Mom,what if no one ever comes to claim it ” he asked.
We explained it to the lady at Lost and Found.“Do you think if the money isn’t claimed it could be given to our son who found it ” I asked.
The lady had watched Bradley struggle with changing his mind and readily agreed.
We left his name and address and she wrote a quick note. Then using the rubber band she attached the note to the money and placed it in a lock-box.
Two years later a letter came to Bradley from that store, saying they had found a roll of money in their vault(金库) with Bradley’s name and address on it.Attached to the letter was a check made out to Bradley with a note from the manager.
Dear Bradley,
I admire you so much for making such a grown-up decision at age nine.I remember your struggle and know it wasn’t easy.It took a person of strong character to turn in that money. Many adults would struggle with such a decision. The money was never claimed so I am pleased to honour your request. The money is now yours!
It would be a wonderful story if it ended right here, but there’s more.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请在相应位置作答。
Twenty years later Bradley was out of job.Worse still, his new-born son,Nathan, suffered a serious disease and was in ICU.

Twenty years later Bradley was out of job.Worse still, his new-born son,Nathan, suffered a serious disease and was in ICU. Bradley left the ICU and went to the nearby convenient store to get some food.On his way back,he noticed a vending machine selling toys.A brown Teddy Bear caught his eye.He put his coins in and made his selection.Just then coins began to pour out.Surprised at his good luck,he collected the coins and was just about to count them when he remembered his childhood experience. He knew what to do.
He walked over the nurses’ desk, put all the coins on the counter, and said,“This isn’t my money.” He told the nurse how he got the coins and asked her to help return the coins to the vendor. The wide-eyed nurse was astonished.“Are you sure you don’t want to keep this Most people would.” Bradley smiled,“I don’t know how much money is here...but I’m certain that my reward will be much greater by far.” He was correct.Little Nathan survived and recovered. And now he is healthy and happy in the kindergarten.UNIT 12单元测评

I had just won a bidding for a 1950s cookie tin full of memories at an estate sale.Delighted at my victory,I took the box and gave it a shake. The contents rattled.Inside were hundreds of buttons, pins, and other items, all glittering in the sunlight. As a girl,I’d always enjoyed digging through my mom’s box, just as my daughters enjoyed looking through mine.
My eye caught the movement of a swing on the front porch of the house. An old woman watched the happenings in her yard.As I carried my purchases to my car,I stopped to chat with her.She told me she was selling almost all her possessions because she was moving to a nursing home.
Her eyes fell to the button box,and when she looked up,they were glistening with tears.I took the lid off the tin,and her rough hands lifted a handful of buttons and then slowly dropped them back into the container. Her fist closed around a delicate pearl button, now yellow with age.“It was from my first husband’s uniform,” she said.“It’s one of the few things that remind me of him when he didn’t return home alive.” They had been married seven months before he left to serve his country in World War Ⅱ.
As we sifted through the box together,we found hairpins ranging from black to brown to shades of gray and even white,a key to a music box that played a special love song, garter clips, wooden nickels, ruby buttons; all took her further down the memory lane.I learned about her wedding, the birth of her children, and much more of the life she had led for 89 years.
After our chat,I set the woman’s box of memories down on the swing and slid my hands into hers.I knew we would talk again, when I went to visit her at her new home. And I knew that when I reached my own home,my heart would pull me to my sewing room, where I would rediscover my own lifetime of memories in my own button box.
24.How did the author feel when she got the tin
A.Curious. B.Regretful.
C.Joyful. D.Embarrassed.

Reading Art:Art for Book Lovers is a celebration of an everyday object-the book, represented here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. The image of the reader appears throughout history,in art made long before books as we now know them came into being. In artists’ representations of books and reading,we see moments of shared humanity that go beyond culture and time.
In this “book of books,” artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations.Adults are portrayed(描绘) alone in many settings and poses-absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leisure. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago,but they record moments we can all relate to.
Books themselves may be used symbolically in paintings to demonstrate the intellect(才智),wealth or faith of the subject. Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects and could be works of art in their own right.More recently,as books have become inexpensive or even throwaway, artists have used them as the raw material for artworks-transforming covers, pages or even complete volumes into paintings and sculptures.
Continued developments in communication technologies were once believed to make the printed page outdated. From a 21st-century point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it remains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader.To serve its function,a book must be activated by a user:the cover opened, the pages parted, the contents reviewed, perhaps notes written down or words underlined. And in contrast to our increasingly networked lives where the information we consume is monitored and tracked,a printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private,“off-line” activity.
28.Where is the text most probably taken from
A.An introduction to a book. B.An essay on the art of writing.
C.A guidebook to a museum. D.A review of modern paintings.
29.What are the selected artworks about
A.Wealth and intellect. B.Home and school.
C.Books and reading. D.Work and leisure.
30.What do the underlined words “relate to” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Understand. B.Paint.
C.Seize. D.Transform.
31.What does the author want to say by mentioning the e-reader
A.The printed book is not totally out of date.
B.Technology has changed the way we read.
C.Our lives in the 21st century are networked.
D.People now rarely have the patience to read.

By the year 2050,a fifth of the world’s cities will experience unprecedented climate conditions and environments that currently don’t exist in any major cities, according to a new research.A team of scientists at the Crowther Lab in Switzerl produced the report, which described the climate for 520 major cities 30 years in the future.
The results showed that 77 percent of the world’s cities would experience a surprising change in climate conditions by 2050,and 22 percent of the 520 cities would see conditions that are not currently experienced by any existing major cities.
In China in 2050,the climate of Xi’an,in Shannxi province, will be similar to that of current day Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho in southern Africa, with the maximum temperature of the warmest month likely to increase by 4.5℃.Chongqing in southwest China will resemble the climate of Swaziland capital Mbabane,as the warmest temperature is predicted to rise by 5.1℃.
Scientists predict summers in Europe will get warmer by an average of 3.5℃ and European winters will see temperature rises of 4.7℃.London’s climate will be more similar to Barcelona, and Madrid’s to Marrakech.
The Crowther Lab hopes the analysis will motivate decision-makers to take necessary steps to prevent or address some of the climate impacts due to the threat of the climate change. The report also found that cities in tropical regions will experience smaller changes in average temperature but will be controlled by shifts in rainfall regions. This may lead to a noticeable increase in unexpected events, and severe droughts.
“Across all scientific fields, the greatest challenge in climate science is no longer the precise measurement of climate change impacts, but inspiring people to picture its actual effects in order to motivate action,” said Tom Crowther,a senior scientist and founder of the Crowther Lab.
32.What does the underlined word in the first paragraph probably mean

B.To inspire people to picture its actual effects in order to motivate action.

D.To show that 77 percent of the world’s cities will experience a striking change in climate conditions.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One year,a newspaper of the United States published an announcement that the horticultural(园艺的) institute offered a reward at a high price for the pure white marigold (金盏花).The high reward attracted so many people, but in nature besides golden, the marigold is brown, and it is not easy to grow the white one.So after they were excited for a time, many people had forgotten the announcement.
Years flew away. One normal day after 20 years, the horticultural institute that had published the announcement accidentally received a letter and 100 seeds of pure white marigolds. On that day the news spread like wildfire.
It turned out to be an old woman of over 70 years old.The institute had always been hesitating over the fact that the letter said with certainty that the seeds could bloom pure white marigolds, and the need for verification (验证) became the focus of the debate.Whether they would make an experimental verification or not became the controversial focus at one time.
Some said you would never live up to the old woman’s wish. Those seeds finally took root in the earth. The miracle appeared after one year:large patches of pure white marigolds waved in the breeze.
Accordingly, the old woman who was always unknown to the public became a new focus.
Originally, the old woman was a flower lover. When she occasionally read the announcement in the newspaper 20 years ago,she was eager to try.But her eight children strongly opposed her decision. After all,a woman who never knew the seed genetics (遗传学) couldn’t complete what the experts could never achieve,so her thought seemed very foolish.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请在相应位置作答。
Still, the old woman didn’t change her mind and went on working without hesitation.

Finally, after 20 years on the day we all know,in the garden she saw a pure white marigold.

W:Welcome to Sabie Sands Park. This place isn’t just my business. It’s my passion coming to life.I grew up in India, and I spent so much of my childhood caring for animals. It wasn’t until I went to the boarding school in the city that I saw how urban people lived. It wasn’t just the lack of fresh air that surprised me.It was the complete absence of knowledge of nature and animals as well.My business partner and I grew up on a farm with very little money. But luckily for us,we were able to secure money for our business through rounds of investment.Originally, all of our investors recommended opening a public zoo and selling hundreds of tickets per day at around $20 each.Instead,we decided to make our park a more interactive experience. These days we bring in young students to work side by side with our staff.Children then get a free educational program in animal caretaking. However,we are also open to the public,in which we provide family tours and accommodation for the price from $30 to $100 per person. We’ve expanded our park to bring in all but the most dangerous animals.Of course,we want to provide children the experience of seeing animals like giraffes and elephants, but lions and wolves would be too dangerous. Now,we hope to add new members to our management team to take over daily operations while my current partner and I get older.

With bushfires continuing to swallow different parts of Australia,a local zoo in New South Wales—the state which is the easiest to catch fire—has hit the headlines with a heartwarming story.
Right in the line of a bushfire, the keepers of Mogo Wildlife Park managed to protect all 200 animals from harm after they received evacuation orders, according to reports.
Netizens were quick to react on social media and praised the bravery of the zookeeper and staffs,as they stayed and managed to protect animals from uncontrolled fires and even sheltered some at their own house.
The 40-year-old zookeeper,Chad Staples, described the situation as the worst catastrophe, which felt like Armageddon (大决战) here.Luckily, his team had made a precise plan ahead of time by moving everything flammable from the area and the larger animals to safe places.
What’s remarkable is that as the smaller ones needed extra shelter,Staples decided to take them to his own house.
“Right now in my house there are animals of all descriptions in all the different rooms. They are safe and protected...not a single animal lost,” he said.
BBC News also mentioned that “there’s a tiger to the back of the house”.
Some media outlets highlighted the “heroic job” in their headlines.Online users also reacted with thumbs-up and were glad to see all the staff and animals coming through the horrific fire.
Located in the southern coast of New South Wales,Mogo Wildlife Park houses Australia’s largest collection of primates, also including different and unique animals such as zebras, giraffes, rhinos and red pandas.

The first English Language Day was the result of work by the United Nations.A few years ago,the UN’s Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (the UNESCO) created Language Days for each of the UN’s six official languages. The aim was to celebrate the use of different languages around the world and in different cultures.Another goal was to campaign for equal use of all six official languages throughout the United Nations. The other five languages are Arabic,Chinese,French,Russian and Spanish. The UN celebrated its first English Language Day on April 23,2010.

What comes into your mind when you think of British food Probably fish and chips,or a Sunday dinner of meat and two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting Even though Britain has a reputation for less-than-impressive cuisine,it is producing more top class chefs who appear frequently on our television screens and whose recipe books frequently top the best-seller lists.
It’s thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits. It is recently reported that the number of those sticking to a traditional diet is slowly declining and around half of Britain’s consumers would like to change or improve their cooking in some way. There has been a rise in the number of students applying for food courses at UK universities and colleges. It seems that TV programmes have helped change what people think about cooking.
According to a new study from market analysts,1 in 5 Britons say that watching cookery programmes on TV has encouraged them to try different food.Almost one third say they now use a wider variety of ingredients(配料) than they used to,and just under 1 in 4 say they now buy better quality ingredients than before. One in four adults say that TV chefs have made them much more confident about expanding their cookery knowledge and skills, and young people are also getting more interested in cooking. The UK’s obsession(痴迷) with food is reflected through television scheduling.Cookery shows and documentaries about food are broadcast more often than before. With an increasing number of male chefs on TV,it’s no longer “uncool” for boys to like cooking.
32.What do people usually think of British food
A.It is simple and plain. B.It is rich in nutrition.
C.It lacks authentic tastes. D.It deserves a high reputation.
33.Which best describes cookery programmes on British TV
A.Authoritative. B.Creative.
C.Profitable. D.Influential.
34.Which is the percentage of the people using more diverse ingredients now
A.20%. B.24%.
C.25%. D.33%.
35.What might the author continue talking about
A.The art of cooking in other countries.
B.Male chefs on TV programmes.
C.Table manners in the UK.
D.Studies of big eaters.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is not difficult to prepare for exams.
You should review your notes regularly.Every one of you has formed the habit of taking notes. However that’s not enough.Make sure to review and expand upon your class notes regularly throughout the team. 36
Don’t cram (突击备考) at the last second.Evidence shows that students experience declining returns on their efforts when they attempt to study for four and five hours straight. So you shouldn’t be reviewing the night before the exam because you will wake up tired. 37 Obviously,it’s not worth the cost.
You should also complete a mock (模拟) test.If you complete it 3-4 days before an exam, you’ll then know where to focus your studying. 38 For your every subject, try answering a couple of potential questions on a timed, closed book basis and see how you do.Another simple way to conduct a mock test is to ask a friend or a classmate to give you an oral quiz based on contents in the textbooks or in your notes.
39 A group study session is a fantastic model to review and compare notes, ask each other questions, explain ideas to one another, and discuss the difficult concepts. To focus on the topic,do set an agenda and a specific time frame for your group study session.
40 The best food for the brain is sleep,so you’ll need enough sleep during exam times.Try and get good quality sleep.Don’t sleep with your books all over your bed or with lights, music or the computer on.
A.How can you finish this step
B.Make sure to get plenty of sleep.
C.Make your room comfortable while sleeping.
D.Find a group of classmates to study with.
E.If so,you will not be able to focus during the exam.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In 1967,when I was 6 years old,my family moved to the small town of Oanaca,Nevada. My parents worked hard to feed us five girls.Though the community was small, everyone welcomed us and we soon made many friends. One family we grew to admire was the Wadsworths.
The first two years were filled with friendship and joy.But then disaster struck:Mrs Wadsworth died, leaving her husband with eight children that hadn’t grown up.One year later,Mr Wadsworth also passed away.
The entire town was heartbroken.Preparations were made to send the kids to their relatives, but the Wadsworth children had different plans. The oldest son,Brent, gathered all his brothers and sisters and held a family meeting.“Our parents taught us to be responsible for each other. They wouldn’t want us to be separated and unable to see each other frequently from now on,” he said seriously and firmly. The children all agreed and decided to make it on their own.
With their own efforts and the community’s care and help, the Wadsworth children grew healthily and happily.Grateful for the love from the community during their hardships, they were always ready to serve others and return the favour they had received. One such time was the Christmas of 1972.
Typically,on Christmas Eve all the children from the community would gather in the church building to attend the Christmas party, the highlight of which was a visit from Santa Claus. Our bishop (主教) heightened the experience by leaving the hall from time to time to check on the progress of Santa Claus. He was so convincing that all of us kids were close to exploding with excitement.A few moments later,Santa Claus would burst into the hall, shouting “Ho,ho,ho!” Then he would sit in front of the stage, take each child on his lap to listen to their Christmas wishes, and give each a paper bag filled with peanuts,an orange and a large candy cane.It was an event we eagerly looked forward to all year long.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请在相应位置作答。
But this Christmas would be different with the flu spreading through the town.

Unexpectedly,on Christmas Eve,a knock came at our front door.

M:Colour plays an essential role in our life. For example, colour is used to communicate life-saving information. To the driver of a vehicle, the green colour means go and the red colour means stop. You should always pull up when the traffic lights turn red.Besides, colours can irritate your eyes, increase your appetite,or even change your mood.A delicious meal with appropriate colours can certainly make your mouth water.Good colours also help us in many other ways.Statistics show that in a sports competition a team wearing red has a higher chance of winning.Of course,it is largely due to the psychology of wearing red.Luck and ability can be more important. For animals, colours reflect their environment and their characteristics. For instance,a male peacock has its tail feathers of bright colours to win the attention of female peacocks.People often think that a rainbow is the most colourful, but for our artists, all they need are three colours, namely, red, blue and yellow. They are called the primary colours, colours that can not be made by mixing others together. And our artists can mix them together to create any colour in the rainbow and hundreds of other shades in making art...

第一节
Dear Ryan,
I’m Li Hua from Class 3.Knowing there is a golden opportunity for us to improve our spoken English, how delighted I am!However,it is doubtful whether the method of grouping in pairs randomly will be effective.
If the two students paired together are both poor in spoken English,it will be challenging for them to carry on the practice. If we keep the fixed grouping mode, there will be limited space for our improvement. Therefore,a more thoughtful grouping method can be adopted, such as grouping students according to our English levels, verbal performance,or interest, which will surely enhance our confidence and enable us to interact with each other more effectively.
I’d appreciate it if you could take my suggestions into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
But this Christmas would be different with the flu spreading through the town. The flu occurred about ten days before Christmas.Unfortunately, all five of us girls came down with the virus. With Christmas Day drawing near,we just didn’t show any sign of recovery. So our parents warned us not to attend the Christmas party in case we would spread the flu to more people. We had no choice but to stay at home, feeling upset and depressed. We were awfully afraid that we’d have to go without Santa Claus and the long-expected event this Christmas.
Unexpectedly,on Christmas Eve,a knock came at our front door.I opened the door, only to find a Santa Claus standing right before me with several big paper bags in his arms! “Ho,ho,ho!” He shouted merrily with shining eyes.“I’ve heard there are some sick kids in this house. We can’t have them missing out on Christmas.” The voice sounded so young and familiar! Looking closer,we were shocked to discover that our personal Santa was Brent Wadsworth! Thanks to his special visit,we had the most memorable Christmas ever.
