Friendships can hold an exceptional place in our life stories. What is it about these connections that make them so unique Before we dive into the science, let’s first observe one in action.
If I could somehow design a best friend, you know, put together all the ideal qualities of my perfect match, that person would pale in comparison to Priya. She’s always there for me.Last year after I failed my important exam,it felt like my whole world was crashing down.Priya was at my door at the news.I was a wreck, but she sat there with me and listened. We were on the same page!
Early childhood, adolescent, and adult friendships are all a little different in part because the brain works in different ways at those stages of life.Adolescence is a unique time when peer relationships take focus, and thanks to the developing brain, there are changes in the way you value, understand, and connect to friends.Teenage friends can seem attached at the hip.
Scientists describe adolescence as a social readaption as teenagers begin to spend as much or more time with their friends than with their parents. This drive to hang with pals maybe due to changes in the brain’s reward centre. Its activation makes hanging out with others enjoyable and motivates you to spend more time with them.Neuroimaging(神经成像) studies show that this region is highly reactive during your teenage years, which may explain why adolescents seem to place a higher value on social interactions than children or adults.
Teenage friendships can also feel closer than the friendships of your childhood. This deeper connection is possible thanks to improvements in what scientists call Theory of Mind.It is the ability to understand others’ emotions, thoughts, motivations, and points of view.Babies begin to develop Theory of Mind around 18 months or so.And scientists know that it continues to improve and mature well into your teenage years and beyond.Likewise, regions within the social brain show increased connectivity during adolescence compared with childhood.
As a result, teens can better understand their friend’s perspectives, allowing for deeper connections to develop. The ability to connect with others somewhat depends on the coordination of actions, emotions, physiology, and thoughts. This is what psychologists call interpersonal synchrony(同步).

Have you ever found yourself waiting at the stop for your bus to arrive and have a stranger ask a commonplace (普通的) question Or have you stood in line waiting for a coffee and feel the need to just look over to the person next to you and ask about the weather
This is small talk, and despite the name,it’s actually a big part of daily life.
“Small talk may seem trivial (微不足道的),but it’s a natural way for people to connect. It may seem like a waste of time. But it serves a vital role in our social interactions.Big relationships are built on small talk,” Lindy Pegler, who has a master’s degree in psychology, wrote on Medium.
In fact,we spend a lot of our time making small talk.Often,we find ourselves making small talk with the same people on a regular ing up with small conversations is the foundation of these relationships.
The benefits of such conversations can actually contribute to our happiness and benefit our lives as a whole. In a study cited by The New York Times, researchers found that having a healthy number of acquaintances and maintaining these relationships contribute to one’s sense of belonging to a community.
So how does one start making small talk It can be as simple as complimenting (称赞) one’s shirt, asking about their day or commenting on the traffic.“First and foremost, small talk is an act of politeness,” Pegler noted.“Our small talk at our first meeting is our chance to show who we are,” she added.
Who knows where this can lead Nowadays, the small connections we make can lead to big results. You might find someone who has a common interest,or maybe even someone who turns out to be a close friend. There is one thing for sure:making small talk can brighten our day—even if it’s just a nice comment or a thoughtful question.
So the next time you find yourself waiting for the bus or checking your watch while you wait in a line, take the opportunity to look up and talk to someone around you. After all,it takes a small connection to lead to a larger one.

Start small.I suggest using a sketchbook(素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. 1 You’ll want to look back on your journey to see how far you’ve come.
Paint often and paint from life. There’s no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles.Whether you paint still lifes, portraits,or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible. 2
Continually challenge yourself to try something new. 3 Artistic growth can be a bit painful.Welcome to the club;we’ve all been there.I love taking on challenges.I once took up a challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.
4 Seeking and accepting constructive feedback(反馈) is crucial to growth.I post my work on social media and,in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected,no matter my level of artistic ability.
The journey you’re on won’t follow a straight path. 5 Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.
A.Get out of your comfort zone.
B.Make career plans and set goals.
C.Don’t throw away your beginner art.
D.Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so.

Recently,we held a heated discussion about how to live harmoniously in the school. Here are the opinions of our group.
First of all,as middle school students,we should be kind and friendly to others, always ready to give a helping hand to those in need.Besides,we must behave ourselves, obeying both class and school rules and doing what we can for the class. Also,it matters a great deal to be honest and trustworthy in our daily life.Secondly,we should respect the old and love the young, especially showing concern for our parents and our teachers by understanding them and following their instructions.Last but not least,we should learn to communicate with others.Try to be considerate and put ourselves in others’ shoes, especially when frictions come.
We hope all of us can enjoy our school life.

So I decided to talk to DeDe directly about my problems.DeDe smiled as soon as she saw me.I kept talking about how much I loved field hockey and why my mother didn’t want me to play it anymore.DeDe listened to me carefully. After a moment of silence, she said,“As one of the people with disabilities,I think it’s lucky to have the ability to do what you really love.Maybe your mother just doesn’t know what field hockey means to you,but you can explain it to her.”
I thought DeDe was right. That night when I came back home,I had a conversation with my mother.“Mom,playing field hockey is not just an interest to me,it will also be my lifelong hobby. The sport gives me confidence,” I explained. And I promised that I would keep a balance between my study and sports. My mother was greatly touched and finally agreed that I could continue playing field hockey.I’m grateful to DeDe until now.UNIT 10分层跟踪检测(一)

As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find.If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.
Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for humans, but a new study shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely important for human well-being.
The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-goers,asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding(编码) experiences into different categories. For example, one participant’s experience of “We sat and listened to the waves at the beach for a while” was assigned the categories “sitting at beach” and “listening to waves”.
Across the 320 submissions,a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge of water, and following an established trail.
Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park.Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break.
“We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen,we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn,a senior author of the study.

I was out for my usual morning run and found myself in the late-summer heat, wishing I had taken a water bottle. When I stopped under a bridge for a moment of shade,I saw two young, scruffy men standing next to their sleeping bags. One smiled and gently raised his hand as if motioning “hello” but didn’t say a word.He wasn’t asking for anything.I smiled and made the same motion back to him.
As I started back on my run,I thought about how much we all crave a connection. In that moment, this homeless man seemed to want to connect more than he wanted food or money. We have all had experiences of feeling separate and lonely.I have felt lonely being in a relationship that was void of emotional connection.Feeling separation doesn’t have anything to do with being alone.Being with people is about the human desire to feel connected by being seen and valued by another person. If your tendency is to spend time alone, practice saying yes to invitations.Practice moving towards rather than away from people.
We all benefit from connections. That homeless man impacted my day. After encountering him,I felt more grateful—appreciating all that I have.He triggered my compassion—I found myself feeling empathy for him.I had the choice to move towards separation or connection. Were there many ways in which he and I are very different Absolutely! Are there many ways in which we are alike Absolutely! I can reflect on times when I was in a situation I had never expected, times when I felt broken, times when I felt at a low point, and times when I needed someone to stop and acknowledge me as he may have been feeling this morning.

C.To get a water bottle.
D.To ask for help.

In this digital age, people measure their popularity by the number of “likes” and followers they get on social media. But as it turns out, people are happier when their friends are of high quality rather than huge quantity.
Scientists from the University of Leeds in the UK studied data from two online surveys of nearly 1,500 people. Those who took the survey gave details about their age, social interactions, and how satisfied they were with their social lives. The researchers found that those who had a small number of close friends generally tended to be happier than those who had a large number of superficial(关系浅薄的) friends.
“Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you have, and more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Bruine de Bruin, one of the researchers.
He found that older people tended to have smaller social circles than young people, but the people in these circles tended to be closer to them.He also found that younger people tended to have larger social circles that were made up of“peripheral(次要的) others”—people who are not their true friends, but just the ones they know. These people had no influence on their happiness.
The results of the study show that the opinion society has about old people being sad and lonely might not be accurate.
“The research shows that older adults’ smaller networks don’t decrease their social satisfaction and happiness. In fact, older adults tend to report a better sense of well-being than younger adults,” said Bruine de Bruin.
9.According to the study, when do people tend to be happier
A.When they have friends of huge quantity.
B.When they have a small circle of close friends.
C.When they have a lot of followers on social media.
D.When they make friends with older people.
10.What can we learn from paragraph 4
A.Older people’s friends seem to be of higher quality.
B.Younger people don’t need to make peripheral friends.
C.Older people’s happiness has nothing to do with their friends.
D.Both older and younger people find it hard to make close friends.
11.Which word might Bruine de Bruin use to describe older adults
A.Sad. B.Happy.
C.Lonely. D.Concerned.
12.What is the focus of this article
A.Different types of friends in one’s life.
