五、阅读理解
A
I’m a student in my fourth year of a biomedical science degree at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, but I also work 38 hours a week at Sainsbury’s to make ends meet. I do three night shifts a week, plus overtime if I can get it. Monday is the most occupied day for me -- I work from 10 pm until 8 am on Saturday and Sunday nights, earning just over 100 a night, and then I have to be at my first lecture at 9 am on Monday. By the time I finish lectures, at 2 pm, I’m exhausted, but I know I have to be back at work by 10 pm.
I constantly have to force myself to stay awake, and to be alert, whatever it takes. A packet of Skittles and a Red Bull usually helps. The work I do at Sainsbury’s is very physical like stacking shelves. I’m lucky because I’m an active person and the amount I lift at work is nothing compared with the weights I lift in the gym. I know I have the strength to bear it.
I’m originally from Nigeria. I came here when I was seven, growing up in Croydon, south London. Money was tight. My parents gave me everything I needed, but there was no money to spend on luxuries. I worked hard at school though and, with the help of GT Scholars, I got some of the best A-level grades in my class.
Unfortunately, though I had applied for “settled” British residential status when very young, the Home Office waited until I was in sixth form to approve my application. That meant I wasn’t eligible for a student loan. The only way I could afford to go to university was that if I got a job that would pay for all my living costs and my parents, who work in market research, paid for my tuition fees. In Scotland, that’s about 7,000 a year.
I don’t have much time to socialize because of my job. Ideally, I would also like to have more time to study so I can excel at my course. Yes, I have a lot on my plate, but working hard isn’t new to me. Growing up, my parents and my mentors in the church and at GT Scholars cultivated in me the importance of working hard for what I want in life.
My dream is to do an MA in physiotherapy next year and then get a job working for the NHS. But right now, I’m just focused on trying to get the best grades I can. Whenever I find life hard, I tell myself this is about my future. I don’t need much, but I would like to worry less about money and have more free time. That is what I look forward to the most.
1.Why does the author work long hours and sometimes overtime every week

4.Which of the following proverbs can best summarize the passage
A.A penny saved is a penny earned. B.Actions speak louder than words.

Jenifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.
Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jenifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲)to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. ''Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers,'' she says. However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family-and that's pretty powerful.
5.What did Jennifer do after high school
A.She helped her dad with his work. B.She ran the family farm on her own.
C.She supported herself through college. D.She taught her sisters and brothers at home.
6.Why did Jennifer choose the program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield
A.To take care of her kids easily. B.To learn from the best nurses.

7.What did Jennifer sacrifice to achieve her goal
A.Her health. B.Her time with family.
C.Her reputation. D.Her chance of promotion.
8.What can we learn from Jenifer's story
A.Time is money. B.Love breaks down barriers.
C.Hard work pays off. D.Education is the key to success.

A mobile phone game will be used to help international students deal with “culture shock” and university life in Britain.
The game—called C-Shock—is the idea of University of Portsmouth games technology expert Nipan Maniar who, himself, arrived in the UK from India five years ago as an international student. Nipan said the game would act as a “mobile mummy” for new students . “ I found some parts of British culture very different to what I was used to in my own culture in India,”Nipan said. “ I thought it would be great to have a learning tool to help people deal with the culture shock because if you have not experienced such things before , it’s hard to know how to act properly.”
The game follows an international student arriving in the UK for the first time. The aim of the game is to reduce the character’s “culture shock” by performing a series of tasks that introduce things and pictures that are related to culture shock.
The game’s beginning is a student’s first day at university in the UK. The student is shown a map of the university and is given tasks to find certain locations. Clicking on pictures along the way warns the student about what to expect in terms of culture shock —for example, it is acceptable for students to drink alcohol.
“C-Shock could be used to guide students through events such as course registration and help them with basic information like getting to a bank. You could put a whole city guide into the game so the new student can settle into a new city very quickly ,”Nipan said.
The game is in the final stage of development and is expected to be download from the University of Portsmouth website later this year.
9.What caused Nipan to develop C-Shock
A.new student’s story. B.The university’s support.
C.His personal experience. D.His friends’ encouragement.
10.What can be learned about the character in the game
A.He’s a “mobile mummy”. B.He’s a student from India.
C.He visits the UK very often. D.He needs to complete some task.
11.What information can C-Shock users get
A.Maps of city roads. B.Different types of alcohol.
C.Where to get a tourist guide. D.How to register for a course.
12.How is Nipan’s game going
A.It’s nearly ready. B.It’s in the first stage.
C.It’s free to download online. D.It’s been put on the market.
第二节:七选五
Do you think studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting Certainly, it is a new experience, which brings the opportunity of discovering fascinating things and a feeling of freedom. 13 You will experience culture shock. Evidently, at least four essential stages of culture-shock adjustment occur.
The first stage is called "the honeymoon". In this stage, you feel excitement about living in a different place, and everything seems to be marvelous. 14
Eventually, however, the second stage of culture shock appears. This is the "hostility stage". 15 You become tired of many things about the new culture. Moreover, people don't treat you like a guest anymore. Everything that seemed to be so wonderful at first is now awful, and everything makes you feel distressed and tired.
Then you come to the third stage called "recovery". You start feeling more positive, and you try to develop comprehension of everything you don't understand. The whole situation starts to become more favorable. 16
The last stage of culture shock is called "adjustment". 17 The things that initially made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. Now you feel comfortable; you have adjusted to the new culture.
A.Actually, culture shock is something you cannot avoid when studying in a foreign country.
B.You have reached a point where you feel good because you have learned enough to understand the new culture.
C.You like everything, and everybody seems to be so nice to you.
D.You recover from the symptoms of the first two stages.
E. In spite of these advantages, however, there are also some challenges you will encounter.
F. However, when you have completely adjusted to a new culture you can more fully enjoy it.
G. You begin to notice that not everything is as good as you had originally thought it was.

Study Online
With the outbreak of the COVID-19, a lot of students have to study online at home. As for online studying, it has two sides.
On the one hand, not only can it release/free teachers from repeating the same contents and students, but it can replay the teaching materials as well. On the other hand, online teaching lacks teacher-student interactions and people doubt whether students have self-discipline without supervision.
As far as I’m concerned, although online classes are a better option when it comes to the special situation at the moment, I prefer to study in class because what students acquire at school is more than knowledge.
