Medha Pappula, an eight-grader at Brambleton Middle School, is using her skill set to solve a problem — bullying. She recently earned an award from National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC) for her anti-bullying efforts in software development and animation (动画).
Pappula, 13, said she discovered that a classmate had experienced cyberbullying (网络欺凌), which was painful for her to learn about. “Even though I didn’t experience it, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, even my worst enemy.” Pappula said.
Then she developed a program. “It takes a message, and then recognizes signs of bullying and gives a rating (评价) to the cyberbullying.” the teen said. “If the rating is high, the program can be used to carry out things like removing that message or reporting it.”
In addition to this program the NBPC awarded Pappula for a three-minute animated video about Unity Day, which she created and shared on YouTube last October. Unity Day was started by the NBPC in 2011 to raise bullying awareness among school-age children. Schools encourage their students to wear orange on Unity Day, as it is a color that is connected with safety.
Pappula visited different websites to develop her animation skills several years ago. She spent more than a month creating her 2-D animated video using an animation software called Krita. Lifelong learning is how you improve as a person, bit by bit and day by day. Lifelong learners recognize the importance and joy of growth so they never settle for what they currently know and always seek for improvement. Here are some habits people who value lifelong learning have in common, and see how many of them you recognize in yourself.
Whatever problem or dilemma (困境) you currently face, there’s definitely at least one decent book that discusses it and presents different kinds of solutions. Reading is a great way to open up new horizons, train your brain and change your life completely. Through reading, you can connect with successful people and learn from the lessons they share. Lifelong learners love to be lost in books and do it regularly.
Whether it’s online or offline, there are countless courses you can participate in for free. These are great opportunities to connect with clever and like-minded people and learn from them. Because of advanced technology, you can now gain knowledge from online programs. What lifelong learners have in common is squeezing as much as possible out of these opportunities.
Instead of spending your free time lying on the couch and watching TV, you should do something creative and practical. You know every wasted minute is gone forever. Lifelong learners stay up-to-date with growth opportunities in their areas and participate in them frequently.
As a lifelong learner, if behind the efforts, there is a deep desire to grow, your chances of success are much higher compared to when you are forced to learn. Lifelong learners love to experience the constant growth and improvement. In order to keep growing, you are supposed to clearly define your goals. Smart goal setting is one of the tools to insure constant growth.

Last Thursday, the world’s first self-driving, electric container ship made its first trip to Oslo, Norway. The ship’s owners aim to cut pollution by transporting large quantities of products by water on the southern coastal of Norway instead of by truck.
The ship, called the Yara Burkeland, is owned by Yara, a company that makes fertilizer (肥料). The company wanted to develop a zero-emission (零排放的) ship that was completely self-driving. Yara worked with a ship-building company called Vard and the technology company Kongsberg to develop the ship. The company says that in the future everything, including loading and unloading the ship, will be handled completely automatically.
The Yara Birkeland can carry 120 large containers like those pulled by trucks. But the ship is fully electric and is powered by batteries. The company says the ship has roughly as many batteries as 100 electric cars. The electricity that will be used to recharge the batteries is from renewable hydroelectric (水力发电) sources, so there’s no pollution at all.
The Yara Birkeland won’t usually be going to Oslo, and it won’t be traveling far, either. It will travel along a regular route from Yara’s factory in Porsgrunn up to the port in Brevik. By road, that’s a distance of about 14 kilometers. Yara normally uses diesel-powered (柴油动力的) trucks to move fertilizer between these locations.
Now, with the Yara Birkeland moving huge amounts of fertilizer by water, the company expects to suspend 40,000 yearly trips by diesel-powered trucks. That will prevent about one million kilograms of carbon emissions every year.
In the future, as an autonomous ship, the Yara Birkeland is expected to operate without any human involved. Yara plans to spend the next two years improving and testing the ship. But, as with many autonomous cars, the ship will continue to have humans watching over even if it is driving by itself.
12. Why will the products be delivered by ship rather than by truck
A. To reduce the transport costs. B. To shorten their delivery time.
C. Out of environmental concern. D. Out of concern for their safety.
13. What can be learned about the Yara Bikeland
A. It uses natural gas as power. B. It has more than one developers.
C. It is a completely self-driving ship. D. It belongs to the government.
14. How does the author mainly introduce the ship and its influence
A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By presenting reasons. D. By following time order.
15. What does the underlined word “suspend” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Roll out. B. Stick to. C. Cut out. D. Turn to.

“Mom, I’m ready to go,” called Jason.
Every Saturday, Jason looked forward to going to Chinatown to shop for food because his mom let him pick his favorite snacks: roast pork buns and bubble tea.
The streets in Chinatown were crowded with cars and pedestrians. His mother could not find the same exotic vegetables in the local supermarkets, so they always came here to shop. What fascinated Jason was tasty roast pork, even the whole pigs hanging on big hooks in the windows, their skins roasted to a glistening brown. Jason’s mouth would water just looking at them.
As they passed the newsstand carrying Chinese newspapers and magazines, Jason spotted an old man sitting on the sidewalk. His hair was long, white, and messy. The face beneath was lined, dirty, and unshaven. Frayed and torn clothing wrapped around his thin frame, and in this kind of cold weather, he even wore sandals, his feet blue with cold. He banged an empty can against the sidewalk. As Jason walked by, he could smell a musty odor and pinched his nostrils together. The old man reached out and touched Jason’s left leg. Instinctively, Jason gathered all his strength to jerk(猛拉) his leg away and kick the old man’s hand heavily. Frightened, he hurried to catch up with his mother without looking back.
“Mom, the old man touched me,” he cried, “He touched me with his dirty hands. It’s disgusting! And he smelled too.”
Jason’s mother glanced back at the man with a look of understanding and said gently, “Jason, he can’t help it. He’s homeless. He didn’t mean any harm.”
Mom’s words made Jason look back at the old man with regret, who now was looking up at other passersby, still banging his can.
On their way home, Jason asked, his voice filled with concern. “Why is that old man homeless Where does he sleep ”
“I don’t know. It’s tough to be homeless, especially in this cold weather. He did look quite weak,” his mother replied.
Mom’s words made Jason’s regret deepened. He confessed his heavy kick to his mother, who reminded him that it was crucial to acknowledge his mistake and try to make up for it.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, with his mother’s help, Jason decided to do something.

A. Roll out. B. Stick to. C. Cut out. D. Turn to.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了世界上第一艘自动驾驶电动集装箱船。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“The ship’s owners aim to cut pollution by transporting large quantities of products by water on the southern coastal of Norway instead of by truck. (船主的目标是通过在挪威南部沿海通过水路而不是卡车运输大量产品来减少污染)”可知,用轮船而不用卡车运输产品是出于环保考虑,想减少污染。故选C项。
13题详解】

(Yara Birkeland号可以运载120个像卡车那样的大集装箱)”和“The company says the ship has roughly as many batteries as 100 electric cars. (该公司表示,这艘船的电池数量大约相当于100辆电动汽车)”以及倒数第二段中“40,000 yearly trips by diesel-powered trucks (每年4万辆柴油卡车)”和“That will prevent about one million kilograms of carbon emissions every year. (这将每年减少大约100万公斤的碳排放)”可知,作者主要是通过列举数字来介绍这艘船及其作用。故选A项。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词的上文“Now, with the Yara Birkeland moving huge amounts of fertilizer by water (现在,随着Yara Birkeland号通过水路运输大量的肥料)”和下文“That will prevent about one million kilograms of carbon emissions every year. (这将每年减少大约100万公斤的碳排放)”可知,该公司将使用Yara Birkeland号轮船来进行运输,大幅减少碳排放,再结合划线词的宾语“40,000 yearly trips by diesel-powered trucks (每年4万辆柴油卡车)”可推知,取得这样的效果应该需要“不再使用,暂停使用”这些柴油卡车,划线词意思应该与cut out“终止,停止”一致。A. 推出,推广;B. 坚持;D. 改用。故选C项。

第二节:
47. 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】The next day, with his mother’s help, Jason decided to do something. They drove to the familiar side street in Chinatown with several packages of necessities. The old man was still there, looking even skinnier than the day before. He glanced at Jason and seemed to recognize him. Jason opened his packages and handed the old man a pair of shoes and some clothes. He said gently to the man, “I hope they fit.” And then he took a package of roast pork from his mom. Eagerly slipping it to the old man’s hand, he said, “It’s also for you.”
Hearing this, the old man looked at them with watery eyes. He bowed deeply, whispering “Thank you!” in a trembling voice. Jason helped him put on the new shoes and clothes. Surprisingly, Jason didn’t think of the man as smelly but someone worthy of respect and care at this moment. When the old man was wolfing down the roast pork, his eyes misted over once again. “I’m sorry for that kick,” Jason apologized sincerely. Touched by the man’s gratitude, Jason understood that it was never too late to make up for a past mistake, no matter how late it might seem.
