Like many couples,Sheila and David Hoffman enjoy travelling.Since 2000,they’ve often visited relatives in Australia and enjoyed holidays in many European countries including France,Germany,Italy, and Greece. And they’ve toured around America, but they haven’t once stayed in a hotel. The Hoffmans are part of a growing number of people who use their homes as a way to have inexpensive holidays. So far, they’ve swapped their three-bedroom London home with people who want to stay there for anything from a week to two months.
In a home swap, you offer your house as a place to stay and anyone who’s interested gets in touch. If your dates and requirements fit, then you make a deal to exchange houses for an agreed time. The exchange can involve more than just a place to stay—some homeowners also exchange cars and others will arrange for a friend or neighbour to be on call in case of emergencies. Some exchangers will even organise restaurant bookings and trips.
Home swaps have existed in Britain on an organised basis for decades but they really took off with the arrival of the Internet.Previously, the process was long and drawn-out,involving letter exchanges and expensive international calls to complete arrangements. Now,it can all be done with a few clicks. Most home-exchangers register(注册) with a specialist home-exchange company that deals with the organisation.
More people are using their homes as a way to enjoy holidays at home as well as abroad. Most of them choose to follow the trend because they are interested in how natives lead their lives. When you live in a typical home rather than a hotel,it’s almost like an exchange of lifestyles. It’s also a cheap way to travel making sure you won’t run short of money on your journey.
24.Where do Sheila and David Hoffman live
A.In Australia. B.In the US.
C.In the UK. D.In France.
25.Which word can be used to describe some homeowners mentioned in paragraph 2

26.What can we know about the home-exchange process in the past
A.It caused many problems. B.It saved a lot of time.
C.It was well-organised. D.It was complicated.
27.What is the main reason for more people swapping their homes
A.They hope to experience life as the locals.
B.They are not used to staying in hotels.
C.They do not want to leave their houses unused.
D.They need to earn money from exchanging their homes.
C
Ask a classroom of children to draw a scientist, and you’ll see plenty of colored lab coats and glasses. The image(画像) hasn’t changed much since the 1960s,but the person wearing the lab coat is changing.
A new analysis finds that more female scientists have appeared in kids’ drawings in recent decades—going from nearly non-existent in the 1960s to about a third in 2016.
The first of many “draw-a-scientist” studies asked nearly 5,000 children to draw a scientist between 1966 and 1977.Of those 5,000 drawings, only 28 drew female scientists. That was just 0.56 percent.Today, female scientists are being presented more in the media. For example,in a content analysis,13 percent of people pictured in science feature stories of the 1960s were women or girls, compared with 44 percent in the 2000s.“That might really affect children’s idea of what a scientist should be like,” says Miller,a Ph.D.candidate in psychology.
To look for changes in children’s perception over time, the researchers conducted a meta-analysis,combining data from 78 studies that included a total of more than 20,000 children from kindergarten to the 12th grade. On average,28 percent of children drew female scientists in studies conducted from 1965 to 2016.
What hasn’t changed much:kids pick up stereotypes (模式化观念) of gender (性别) as they grow up.At age 6,about 70 percent of the girls in the more recent studies drew female scientists.By age 16,75 percent drew male scientists. This is an important period in which kids are learning stereotypes. It’s important that teachers and parents present diverse examples of both male and female scientists.
28.What’s the picture of scientists drawn by a 1960s’ kid like
A.A woman with long curly hair. B.A woman with lab glasses.
C.A woman in a formal lab suit. D.A man in a colored lab coat.
29.What may contribute to the changes in kids’ drawings
A.The improvement of women’s social status.
B.The kids are affected by teachers and parents.
C.More female scientists appear in the media.
D.The increasing number of female scientists.
30.What does the underlined word “perception” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A.Belief. B.Idea. C.Habit. D.Growth.
31.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .
A.it’s a stereotype that scientists are generally males
B.girls are more influenced by stereotypes than boys
C.some children are born with certain stereotypes
D.most children tend to prefer female scientists

Volunteering to take care of neighborhood pets is a great way for kids to learn responsibility.

Have your kids make flyers (传单) to place around the neighborhood, showcasing their willingness to help out by caring for neighborhood pets. 36 Also encourage them to come up with their own ideas for flyers.
Helping out
Your children can volunteer for small pet-sitting jobs that are easy for both you and them to manage. 37 You can accompany your children, while also allowing them to take the leash (牵狗绳) and lead the way.
Learning opportunities
Offering activities, like animal caretaking, benefits little animals and your children at the same time. 38 For example, the tropical fish you are feeding for friends can offer a wonderful platform for researching their natural habitat.
Emotional benefits of animals
The benefits of interaction between children and animals go beyond the physical aspect,as well. 39 Children learn to make emotional connections through the love that animals provide.Having children care for pets also provides an opportunity to discuss emotions children often struggle to understand.
40 Offer positive affirmations (肯定) to your children to underline the additional exercise they are also enjoying from this responsibility,so they will also recognise that there is a healthy connection. When you praise your children’s willingness to take on this kind of new responsibility, you can be assured that it will eventually be translated in a very positive way to the world around them.
A.Pets also meet many psychological needs.
B.Young children can benefit from the difficult actions.
C.Small tasks can allow parents to gain a sense of understanding.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was the “fool” at school.Obviously, because I was not interested in school and did not care for my grades, and thus I was termed a student with special needs.
Over time,I started to believe in my stupidity.I absorbed the fact that I was in classes with special needs in high school.I didn’t have much confidence and was always negative. But one activity changed this view of myself:chess.
I started to play chess with my father after school because I wanted to beat him at something. My father was a smart man, fond of physics, writing, drawing—almost every discipline (知识领域).He was called a walking dictionary. So,winning in chess against my father would be a sign that I had intellectual (智力上的) power.
Game after game,I wanted to beat my father even more.I started to study chess books and play against a chess computer to improve my skills. One weekend,I beat my father while we were on a bus ride to Port Townsend. It made me feel excited and I dreamed of standing on the winner’s stage of a chess competition.
Fast forward two years and several months,I was the second board on my high school chess team, with our top board being the best high school player in the state. There was an exhibition match,so I invited my father to watch.Since our top player could not come,it was my chance to play as the top board against the best high school players in the state. It was also a chance for me to let my father be proud of me.
I was determined to show who I had become:an intelligent person able to win with calculation (计算),logic, and will.My most memorable game came in the fourth round.I was playing the black pieces and played my usual kingside defence. The competitor was making moves skillfully and it was hard for me to defend my position.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
He kept attacking and I kept defending, finding hidden resources to keep my king safe.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The present situation was to my advantage, and then I made the final perfect kingside defence.

W:I really like the design, and the price is quite reasonable, but I don’t like blue.
M:We have some other colors for you to choose from. This way, please.
(Text 2)
W:Can you tell me what you usually do in your spare time
M:Well,I like music—I listen to a lot of pop music—but most of all I like reading a book. It’s much better than watching TV.
(Text 3)
M:Could you take this down to the accounting office for me,please
W:Sure,Mr Stone.I will just be on my way down to the shipping department, anyway.Accounting office is just one floor above it,so it’s right on the way and I will do it for you first.
M:Great.Maybe when you get back,I could take you to that Thai restaurant you’re always telling me about.
(Text 4)
W:How about going camping this weekend
M:I don’t think it’s a good idea. The weather report says we may get some very heavy rain in the mountain areas this weekend.
W:I thought the good weather would last till the end of this week.
M:Well,I’m afraid it won’t.
(Text 5)
M:I lost my ID card. What do I do to replace it
W:Fill out your name and social security number on this form, and stand behind that line.I’ll take your picture here.
M:OK.I’m ready.
W:I’ll print you the new ID card in about a minute.
(Text 6)
W:Have you received an invitation to Anna’s party
M:I don’t know.I haven’t checked my mail yet.When is the party,by the way
W:On July 10th.
M:That’s too bad.I’m afraid I cannot go.Some friends of mine from Chicago are coming to see me this Friday.I’ve promised to hang out with them the following day.I can’t get out of that, unfortunately.I wish I could.
W:I’m so sorry to hear that.I was really looking forward to seeing you at the party.
M:Don’t worry.I can go next time.Anna throws parties quite often, after all.

(Text 7)

M:Oh,I like this one.Where did you buy it
W:At the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Art History Department recently organised a special museum tour there.
M:Is this a copy of something in the museum collection
W:Yes,it’s a print of a painting by Georgia O’Keefe.
M:Is the Art History Department planning another museum tour here in Washington

(Text 8)
W:Welcome to our program.Today we have invited Fred Wocson,a driving instructor with over 20 years of experience,to talk to us about learning to drive.Well,Fred,do you think it’s getting expensive to learn to drive these days
M:Well,it depends. If you come to a private instructor like me,it’s going to be a bit less expensive than going to a big school. The thing is that most people have usually heard of the big schools by the Internet or newspapers so they go there. My first customer is one of my friends,so I usually get my customers through personal connections.
W:Does that mean you have to try hard to get customers
M:Not now. When I started,I had to work hard and taught one-to-one,but at the moment I am fully booked, and my prices are quite competitive.
W:No wonder you have so many customers.
(Text 9)
W:Hi,Matt.May I ask you a few questions
M:Certainly,Julian. What do you want to know
W:I’m doing a study on the spending habits of students in our school.I’m writing a paper for my social studies course.
M:That sounds interesting.
W:To begin with, how much money do you get from your parents a month
M:I get about five hundred dollars.
W:How do you spend your money
M:I spend about three hundred dollars on food. You know how I like to eat.
W:Yes.What about the rest of the money
M:Well,I spend on shows about thirty dollars a month.Games,uh,for rental of tennis court and balls about fifty dollars.I do spend some on things like reading material. And the rest I save.
W:What about clothes
M:My mother buys them for me.
W:Thanks a lot,Matt.
M:You’re welcome!

Please listen carefully. We’ll be hiking down into the Grand Canyon soon. But even though it’s a comfortable 26℃ here now,it’ll get much hotter as we go down.In fact, when we get to the bottom four hours from now,it’ll be 43℃ down there. So,most important, everyone must take along at least three liters of water. You’d better wear comfortable clothes and take some medicine in case you suffer from an illness. The heat can kill!In fact this year four people have already died in the Grand Canyon from heat exhaustion. One of them,a healthy 24-year-old man, just died one week ago. These have been the first heat-related deaths in the Grand Canyon in five years.Normally, people die in the Grand Canyon when they fall into it.Sometimes they also just get lost or get bitten by snakes, but this year has been extremely hot.The average daily temperature has been 41℃ at the bottom. So,be careful and tell me if you feel uncomfortably hot.Last,I will carry a camp;one will take a compass;three other persons will take a map.Well, good luck!

第一节
Dear Sir or Madam,
I bought a digital camera from your website last Saturday, but I have to say that I am disappointed with its quality.
First, the screen is always black,so I have to restart it again and again, which brings much inconvenience to me.Besides, the battery can only support the camera’s operation for half an hour, and I can never find a place to charge it.Therefore,I want to change it for another camera or get a refund.
I would appreciate it if my problem can receive due attention.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
He kept attacking and I kept defending, finding hidden resources to keep my king safe.He thought long about how to take me down, which gave me time to stay calm and not panic. He tried to break down my kingside defence, but failed in the final push. His time was almost up and he started to make rapid moves.I returned with more defensive measures and tried to make it as difficult for him as possible, which made him really anxious.
The present situation was to my advantage, and then I made the final perfect kingside defence. As I thought,he couldn’t figure out a way to rescue himself after my moves. At last,I beat the top competitor.I saw my father in the audience who was moved to tears. While standing on the winner’s stage,I knew I was not a fool.Chess is something that has totally changed my life.Since then, the negative part of me has melted away, and I have realised that everyone should live with confidence.第八单元测评

Four Wreckage Sites in Bermuda
With more than 300 shipwrecks (海难) in its waters,Bermuda is often considered the shipwreck capital of the world. Here Philippe Max Rouja,a Bermuda native, picks four of his favorite wreckage sites.
King
While most of the wreckage sites were the results of accidents, this boat was placed underwater to create a diving site intentionally.Gary Lamb, the owner of the King, gifted the boat to the Bermuda Dive Association, which placed it at a depth of 65 feet off the island’s south shore.“It’s often considered a divers’ favorite, since you can swim through the boat,” Rouja says.
B-50 Bomber
While the vast majority of diving sites around Bermuda are the wreckage of ships, there is one that is different from the others:the remains of an airplane. The US B-50 Bomber’s jet engine exploded and the plane dropped into the Atlantic Ocean.“The bomber’s remains now rest about 25 feet underwater,” Rouja says.
Montana and Constellation
These two wrecks are stacked (堆放) one on top of each other. The Montana,a steamer, sunk after hitting a coral reef (珊瑚礁),while the Constellation,a wooden ship, met a similar fate years later.“Divers can experience the site too, since they are located just eight feet below the surface,” Rouja says.
Cristobal Colon
Known as the largest of Bermuda’s shipwreck, the Cristobal Colon met its fate when it crashed into a coral reef. There were many attempts to save the ship, but when those failed, paintings and furnishings on it were saved.Today, many of the items on the ship can be found in the homes of Bermudians.“My dad has a painting of a bookseller from Paris hanging in his home,” Rouja says.“The story of the ship persists (存留) in locals’ daily lives.Divers can still access the ship, which sits 80 feet below the surface.”
21.Which of the following is a man-made wreckage site
A.King. B.B-50 Bomber.
C.Cristobal Colon. D.Montana and Constellation.
22.What is special about the B-50 Bomber site
A.It is owned by Gary Lamb. B.It is the remains of an airplane.
C.It is the biggest shipwreck in Bermuda. D.It is formed by two sunken boats piled together.

Towards the end of high school, one of my best friends and I had a fight. She told me I had no common sense,I replied that she was childish, and in a matter of minutes,we went from inseparable to very separate.
We didn’t speak for most of our senior year.We both found other friends, avoiding each other like the plague (瘟疫).A few months after graduation,I learned that she was having some trouble.I sent her a message:“I’m still here,if you ever need me.” She replied shortly after. We reunited, and thus ended our friendship break.
Friendship breakups aren’t all that uncommon.People grow apart and fight. But friendship breaks are a different story. While they’re often healthy, sometimes, they’re also tough to control.Sometimes, like in my case, they happen suddenly and with zero intentions to reunite. In other situations, they’re more of a slow burn.
Katie,33,says she took a break from her best college friend after a few tense exchanges, like when the friend pressured Katie—then a graduate student on a tight budget—to go on an international trip.“We’d probably been friends for ten years at the time of the break,” Katie says.“I felt that the relationship had stopped being enjoyable.” For four years, she and her friend sent only the occasional text messages. Then,a year and a half ago,the two women happened to move to the same town.“She asked whether I would like to meet,” Katie says,“and we took it slowly, speaking on the phone and going for lunches and a few nights out.”
Once you reconnect, you may find that your friendship is totally different, for better or for worse.“A friendship break allows both friends to reassess the situation and see if they miss each other during the cooling-off period,” says sociologist Jan Yager.“When they do reconnect,it might be with a new perspective.”
24.Why did the author break up with her friend
A.Because they had a big argument.
B.Because her friend befriended other students.
C.Because her friend avoided the author purposely.
D.Because they got bored with playing with each other.
25.Why did the author send her friend a message
A.She wanted to share her story. B.She intended to visit her.
C.She still cared about her. D.She needed her help.
26.What do we know about Katie and her friend
A.They have been friends for over ten years. B.They rebuilt their friendship gradually.
C.They were eager to fix the broken friendship. D.They lost touch with each other after graduation.
27.What’s Jan Yager’s opinion of the friendship break
A.It will harm friendship in the long run. B.It is a necessary part of friendship.
C.It usually results in reconnection. D.It is a time for reflection.

A small bowl bought at a yard sale in Connecticut for just $35 has been identified as a rare 15th-century Chinese antique.
The blue-and-white bowl was made by China’s royal court during the Ming Dynasty. It is now expected to sell for up to $500,000,according to Sotheby’s auction(拍卖) house in New York, where the auction will take place next month.
The purchase was made last year near New Haven,Connecticut.“I was just hanging around there aimlessly. But when I saw this bowl,I didn’t even bargain over the $35 asking price,” the owner said.Shortly after the purchase,he sent photos of the bowl to auction specialists, who identified it as an item of historical significance.
Upon closer inspection, the artifact was found to have originated from the period of the Yongle Emperor, who ruled from 1402 to 1424—a period noted for its distinctive porcelain(瓷器) techniques. It’s now valued between $300,000 and $500,000,with the top estimate nearly 14,300 times the amount it was purchased for.
“I was deeply attracted by the techniques. You can see why this bowl is so highly-valued from the very smooth porcelain body, silky glaze (釉料)and special blue colouring, which were never reproduced in later dynasties,” McAteer,an auction specialist, said.
“The Yongle Emperor improved the porcelain techniques and elevated the importance of porcelain from being an ordinary bowl into a true work of art. This small bowl has both practical and artistic value,” McAteer said.
28.What can we infer about the bowl’s owner
A.He found the bowl by accident. B.He hesitated during the purchase.
C.He doubted whether the bowl was real. D.He bought the bowl because it was cheap.
29.What makes the bowl so precious

30.What does the underlined word “elevated” in paragraph 6 probably mean
A.Foresaw. B.Promoted. C.Assessed. D.Acknowledged.
31.What’s the best title of the text
A.An Amazing Bowl B.A Special Yard Sale
C.The Return of Porcelains D.A Man Making Fortune

There are around 100 tribes (部落) that live in global isolation, mostly in South America and India. The Sentinelese have lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60,000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside.Their language is different from any other known languages.Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa. In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998,the Indian government built a road across their land, and since then, they’ve had more contact with the outside world.
Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco-Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribes at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic (游牧的) and started hunting animals in the forest.
The Awa live in the Amazon forests of Brazil.Out of 350 members,100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to escape attacks by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land. The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.
Survival,an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable (弱势的) humans on the planet and that’s why their environment should be unavailable to the rest of us.After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil’s government to clear non-natives from the Awa land. All non-Awa people are leaving so the tribe can get their forest back.
But some think it’s impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world.Contact will be made one day.So the question is:Whose choice should it be,ours or theirs
32.What can we learn about the Sentinelese from the first paragraph
A.They resist contact from the outside world.
B.They speak the same language as the Jarawa.
C.They are wild about fighting with other tribes.
D.They have got help from the Indian government.
33.Why did the Awa choose a nomadic lifestyle
A.To protect their hunting land. B.To search for food sources.
C.To avoid threats from Europeans. D.To maintain their original way of life.
34.Which of the following would Survival probably agree with
A.The tribes should be left undisturbed.
B.The tribes should fight for more living space.
C.The tribes should live in harmony with nature.
D.The tribes should adapt to the connected world.
35.What can be the best title for the text

You have an important test tomorrow. 36 But you’re still worried. You need to relax. What can help Maybe a quiet walk A cup of tea A little yoga Psychologists have another idea:Sit down and write!Write about your stress.
Why does writing help There are two reasons.First, your memory works like the memory in a computer. You need to delete (删除) some documents to make room for other documents. 37 So they need a lot of room in their brains for memory. They need to delete their “documents” of stress.Writing helps them by moving the stress out of the brain and putting it on paper. The second reason is writing helps you to focus.People write about their stress. As a result, they feel less worried. Then they can focus better on other things.
Psychologists are studying the connection between stress and writing. They do experiments with students. They put students into two groups. 38 The other group sits quietly. Then all the students take a test. What are the results The students in the writing group do better than the other group of students.
39 Some people don’t sleep well.Writing at night will help them sleep better. Some athletes get stressed about winning or losing. They can’t focus on playing well.Writing before a game can help them play better.People in job interviews get stressed, too.Writing before an interview can help them relax.
40 Try this experiment:Go to class ten minutes early, and write about your stress. You can write in English or your own language. Then take the test.Maybe the psychologists are right.Maybe writing will help you, too.
A.Do you get stressed about tests
B.Writing can help other people,too.
C.Writing can help you perform well in an exam.
D.Students need to remember a lot of information.
E.One group writes about their stress for ten minutes.
F.Do you feel relaxed after writing about your stress

About a mile behind our house lay a pond.In summer,my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of trees to throw stones over the water there. The pond wore a collar of black mud.It was not a place for swimming. When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place.
One day when ice covered it,Harry said to me,“Try walking across.”
The ice looked thick. No water showed through it,but I felt uncertain about it.
“Go ahead,” Harry said.“Try it.You’re lighter than I am.You go first. If the ice holds,we can run and slide on it.It’ll be fun.”
I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice.I began to take steps across the pond.In the middle of the pond, the ice cracked.I threw out my arms. The next thing I knew was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water.I thought of the bottom of the pond.I knew it would be black and awful down there.I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice,it broke like window glass.Again and again I tried to get out.Again and again the ice broke. The hole widened. As my coat became wet,it pulled me down.I grew tired of trying to get out and rested my arms on the ice.
I looked at Harry on the shore. He just stood there.“I can’t get out!Help me!” I screamed when I caught some breath.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

22.B 细节理解题。根据B-50 Bomber部分中的“While the vast majority of diving sites around Bermuda are the wreckage of ships, there is one that is different from the others:the remains of an airplane.”可知,B-50 Bomber的特殊之处在于它是飞机失事的遗址。
23.C 推理判断题。根据Cristobal Colon部分中的“Today, many of the items on the ship can be found in the homes of Bermudians.”以及Rouja的话“The story of the ship persists in locals’ daily lives.”可知,Cristobal Colon的故事被当地人所熟知。

28.A 推理判断题。根据第三段小碗的主人所说的话“I was just hanging...I didn’t even bargain over the $35 asking price”可知,小碗的主人在闲逛时偶然发现了这个碗。故选A项。
29.D 细节理解题。根据第五段中“You can see why this bowl...which were never reproduced in later dynasties”可知,从这只瓷碗十分光滑的瓷身、丝滑的釉料和特殊的蓝色着色就可以看出它为何如此值钱,并且这些在后来的朝代都从未重现过。据此可知,该碗的珍贵之处在于制作它时使用的独特的技术。故选D项。
30.B 词义猜测题。根据尾段中的“The Yongle Emperor improved the porcelain techniques...into a true work of art.”

故选A项。
50.B 根据第一段的“low-cost”可知,这一工具既便宜又简单,再根据下一段的“Puri’s software is quite admirable”可知,Puri的软件一定比现有的最先进的检测方法精确四倍。故选B项。
51.C 根据上一句“The software is four times more 50 than existing state-of-the-art detection methods.”可知,Puri的软件比现有的最先进的检测方法精确四倍。这当然就不需要那些昂贵的高分辨率热像仪了。故选C项。

写作
第一节
Dear Simon,
Glad to hear from you.I’d like to recommend Zhonghua Weidao to you,a Chinese restaurant near the subway on Hexie Road.
The restaurant serves good traditional Chinese food including dumplings, noodles and various dishes. The prices are very reasonable and that’s probably why it’s popular with young people. Moreover, there is karaoke every evening from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm.It’s a relaxed and informal restaurant and there are always lots of customers.Besides, the service is very nice, fast and helpful.
Wish you a happy time!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Harry turned and ran from the pond.As I looked at his back,I wondered:Is he running for help,or is he running away and leaving me to fall to the bottom I was surprised to see him pick up a large, fallen tree limb.It was V-shaped.He ran with it toward the pond.At the edge,he fell to his stomach, pushed the limb out in front of him,and moved slowly toward me.When a thin top branch was within reach,I took hold of it.It didn’t break.
Hand over hand,I pulled myself from the hole.I began to stand.I wanted to run from the pond as fast as I could.Harry shouted,“Get down!Stay flat on the ice or it’ll break again.” I did as he told me.Harry moved slowly backward towards the shore, pulling the limb.I hung on to a branch and moved slowly towards the shore on my stomach.Once out of the pond,I cried with anger.“Sorry,I shouldn’t have let you go first,” Harry said.It did change him, because since then he’s always gone first whenever we’ve tried something.第九单元测评

Rob Greenfield is an American. He describes himself as an adventurer and an activist. He really cares about the world and its environment and is always looking for ways to inspire people to keep the world healthy. One of his most recent activities was to help people become more aware of the amount of trash they produce. He called this activity “Trash Me”.
We usually place our trash in a large plastic bag. When the bag is full,we tie it up and place it somewhere with everyone else’s trash.Like magic,it disappears and we have no idea what happens to it.Maybe we never think about it.Rob learnt that most Americans create about two kilos of trash each day.If we could reduce this amount, there would be a huge benefit to our environment. But how do you make people aware of this He had an unusual idea.He changed himself to wear every piece of trash he created over thirty days.Multiply two kilos of trash by 30 days in a month, and he has around 60 kilos of additional weight to carry around! He made a suit that would enable him to do this and began walking the streets of New York.
“I noticed that no one has any idea how much waste they are creating.” People would see Rob walking around and be curious about what he was doing. With every explanation,he hoped to get at least one more person to think about the waste they were creating.
Rob lives a near zero waste lifestyle outside of Trash Me.In the high-consumption world that we live in today, this may seem unreasonable but Rob believes that with the right mindset it is possible to create far less waste and live a healthier life.Reduce, reuse, recycle, and refuse on a regular basis.Your small efforts will go a long way.
24.What do we know about Rob Greenfield
A.He works as a local cleaner. B.He can perform magic with trash.

From an early age,my daughter was a natural traveller.I remember being concerned about how she would handle the time difference when we travelled to Europe the summer after her kindergarten year, but she hit the ground running. She woke early enough to catch the first train to Brussels. She wasn’t afraid to try new food in Belgium or Greece.
My 10-year-old son, however,is not a traveller. He feels comfortable in familiar places, and he is a picky eater.
This past summer,my kids and I spent three weeks in Central America. My daughter’s eyes lit up when I told her about the trip;my son’s filled with trepidation.
I spent the month making preparations for our trip, finding ways to convince my son that he would have fun,and that we’d be able to find him food that he would eat.My son loves animals,so I left magazines lying around our house that were conveniently opened to stories on animals found in Central America.
On our first day,we took a bus across Belize to the zoo, which my son loved. It seemed like a successful day until he cried through part of dinner.Exhaustion had gotten the best of him.Much like that first day,the trip had highs and lows.
I learned that making sure my son had enough sleep was the best way I could set us up for success.I made sure both kids had activities they were excited about.I didn’t plan a schedule. This allowed us to plan our days based on how we were feeling.
There were days that were not easy, but when I look through our pictures and find the one of us having just hiked the Pacaya volcano,I know it was worth it.

The news that researchers have used cloning to make human embryos for the purpose of producing stem cells may have some people wondering if it would ever be possible to clone a person.Although it would be immoral, experts say it is likely biologically possible to clone a human being.Since the 1950s when researchers cloned a frog, scientists have cloned dozens of animal species, including mice, cats, sheep, pigs and cows.
With mice, researchers are able to use thousands of eggs, and conduct many experiments,to work out these problems.“It’s a numbers game,” said Dr Robert Lanza, the chief scientific officer at a biotech company.“But with primates (灵长类动物),eggs are very precious, and it is not easy to get them to conduct experiments.”
In addition, researchers can’t simply apply what they’ve learned from cloning mice or cows to cloning a person.Cloning an animal requires that researchers remove proteins that are necessary to help cells divide. In mice, this isn’t a problem, because the embryo that is created is able to make these proteins again. But primates aren’t able to do this, and researchers think it may be one reason that attempts to clone monkeys have failed.
What’s more, cloned animals often have different kinds of abnormalities. These abnormalities are common because cloned embryos have just one parent rather than two, which means that a process known as “imprinting (印记)” does not occur properly in cloned embryos.
“Problems with imprinting can result in extremely large embryos, which leads to problems with blood flow for the baby,” Lanza said.“The extremely high rate of death and the developmental abnormalities from cloning make cloning people immoral. It’s like sending your baby up in a rocket knowing there’s a 50-50 chance that it’s going to explode.”

I awoke suddenly from a deep sleep. My heart was pounding, and I was scared.I closed my eyes, hoping to fall back to sleep quickly. But there it was again.
I was drowning.I was going to die soon if I didn’t do something!“Swim to the light,” a little voice said.I started struggling.I broke through the surface of the water.I was alive, and everything was going to be fine.
I got out of bed, afraid I would have the bad dream again if I went back to sleep. It troubled me all day, making it hard to focus on work.My mind kept drifting back to the dream, wondering what it could possibly mean.
That night, the dream came roaring back again. The next morning,I told my husband about it while we were getting ready for work.My husband said,“The dream might be just to reassure you that your friend,Sandy, will be alright if she fights back.” I liked his interpretation, but I wasn’t sure if that’s what it really meant.
Sandy was my friend, who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and had started chemo(化疗).She was only in her thirties and had three young children.Outwardly,I tried to be positive and encouraging, but inwardly I was very upset by all that was happening to her.
Over the next few weeks,I had the same dream several times.I couldn’t shake the dream.I became convinced that the dream was mostly about me,but somehow Sandy was very connected.Sandy was fighting her cancer. The dream was showing me that I needed to fight back and swim to the light.
I struggled to find a connection between Sandy and my dream. What was wrong What did I need to fight The only thing I could come up with was to make an appointment for a check.A few days after the appointment,I got a call saying they wanted to do more X-rays.That same day,the radiologist recommended a medical check, which was scheduled for a few days later.

M:But I doubt we’ll find everything we need in the grocery stores.I’m sure they use many unusual spices in India.
W:We will start simply.I know I’ve seen some Thai spices at the market—maybe some of them will be useful. If we find that those aren’t enough,we can order some online. There must be an Indian grocery store somewhere in America that will ship them.If worse comes to worst,I’ll ask my brother in New York to look around. He should be able to find a place that sells Indian spices!
