Ancient hutongs of Beijing are always popular with visitors to the capital city. But time has not been kind to these old neighborhoods. In the middle of the 20th century, over 3,000 hutongs could be found in Beijing. But owing to a program of rapid modernization, the vast majority of these have been torn down.Today, unfortunately, just 500 remain.Although efforts have been taken to protect the surviving hutongs, many of the homes in these areas have fallen into disrepair and are in alarming condition.
But Beijing architecture firm People’s Architecture Office (PAO) has designed a solution for repairing hutong homes while keeping their traditional character.PAO is putting prefabricated modules (预制模块) in and around the houses, consisting of panels (嵌板) made of steel and glass. The panels fit together to create bright, comfortable space for residents (居民).The modules cost $500 per square meter—one-tenth of the Beijing average of $5,000 per square meter—and can be installed in a day.
“The units are small,” says James Shen,co-founder of PAO.“It means that we are able to bring them piece by piece into these very narrow hutongs. It also means that we can do building repairs without tearing any of the old buildings down.”
The group recently performed its first installation for a resident,in the Guangcai Hutong.Resident Fan Ke says the module has been transformative, particularly for the additional light it provides.“At first when I lived here,it was always dark,” says Fan.“Now after the repairs,I’m bathed in sunlight throughout the day.I no longer feel caged in.”
She hopes the first installation will be followed by thousands more. The architect says such a program would breathe new life into the hutongs, which, particularly those in central areas, are already seeing more interest from house purchasers. One couple recently spent over $800,000 on an 11-square-meter home in Wenchang Hutong.
“This kind of solution can help make these older areas livelier,” says Shen.“It can show younger people that you don’t have to move to a brand new modern apartment complex.”

A 293-million-mile journey of the NASA Perseverance rover(探测器) to Mars ended successfully on February 18,2021,with a picture-perfect landing inside the Jezero Crater. The car-sized,six-wheeled rover, nicknamed Percy,is the US space agency’s biggest and most advanced explorer to date. Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial(微生物的) life on Mars.
Landing on Mars is extremely tricky. The Red Planet’s gravitational(引力的) pull causes the approaching spacecraft to go faster to high speeds, while its thin atmosphere—just 1 percent that of Earth’s—does little to help slow it down as it approaches the surface.
The scientists had to reduce Percy’s 12,000 mph speed to a safe landing speed of less than five mph—in just six and a half minutes. The target entry angle also had to be a precise 12 degrees—any steeper, and the spacecraft would burn up;any flatter, and it would get lost in space. It is no wonder that the final approach is often referred to as the “seven minutes of terror”.
Upon attaining a manageable speed,Percy briefly flew over the Martian surface to seek out the perfect landing spot. Its complex map-reading system rapidly scanned the area and matched it with maps in its database to find the best location.
The NASA scientists will spend the next two months testing Percy’s scientific instruments.Once ready, the rover will begin to carry out its mission.
“Perseverance is the smartest robot ever made, but confirming that microbial life once existed carries an unusually large burden of proof,” said Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division.“While we’ll learn a lot with the great instruments we have aboard the rover,it may very well require the far more well-equipped laboratories and delicate instruments back here on Earth to tell us whether our samples (样本) carry evidence that Mars once harbored life.”
28.What is the extraordinary challenge for the rover to land on Mars
A.The speed reduction. B.The atmosphere analysis.
C.The location search. D.The time management.
29.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Ways to find the precise entry angle. B.Consequences of the wrong entry degree.
C.Factors to survive “the seven minutes”. D.Reasons for the necessity of speed reducing.
30.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.The spot. B.The area. C.The system. D.The surface.
31.What can be inferred from Lori Glaze’s words
A.Instruments aboard the rover are not quite reliable.
B.Perseverance is able to collect enough evidence needed.
C.Man still has a long way to go to prove life was on Mars.
D.Samples of Mars will be returned soon to our labs on Earth.

Anyone who commutes(通勤) by car knows that traffic jams are an unavoidable part of life. But humans are not alone in facing potential jams.
Ants also commute—between their nests and sources of food. The survival of their colonies depends on doing this efficiently.
When humans commute, there’s a point at which cars become dense (稠密的) enough to slow down the flow of traffic, causing a jam.Researchers wanted to know if ants on the move could also get stuck. So they regulated traffic density by constructing bridges of various widths between a colony of Argentine ants and a source of food. Then they waited and watched, trying to find out at what point they were going to have a traffic jam.
But it appeared that that never happened. They always managed to avoid a traffic jam.The flow of ants did increase in the beginning as ants started to fill the bridge and then leveled off at high density. But it never slowed down or stopped, even when the bridge was nearly filled with ants.
The researchers then took a closer look at how the behaviour of individual ants impacted on traffic as a whole. And they found that when ants sense overcrowding, they adjust their speeds and avoid entering high-density areas, which prevents jams.Their behaviour may be promoted by pheromones, chemicals that can tell other ants where a trail is.The ants also manage to avoid colliding(碰撞) with each other at high density, which could really slow them down.
Can ants help us solve our own traffic problems Not likely. That’s because when it comes to getting from point A to point B as fast as possible, human drivers put their own goals first.Individual ants have to be more cooperative in order to feed the colony. But the research could be useful in improving traffic flow for self-driving cars, which can be designed to be less like selfish humans—and more like ants.
32.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Surviving. B.Commuting. C.Finding food. D.Avoiding jams.
33.How did the researchers control the traffic density of the commuting ants
A.Through closer observation.
B.By regulating their numbers.
C.By finding out the dense points.
D.By controlling the widths of their paths.
34.How can ants avoid traffic jams according to the research
A.They follow a special route.
B.They make their flow steady at high density.
C.They never stop or slow down on the way.
D.They depend on their natural chemicals to make adjustments.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Traffic Jams
B.Survival of an Ant Colony
C.Unavoidable Not for Ants!
D.Differences Between Humans and Ants

In the summer of 2002,Linda Walker was about to enter the sixth grade after having recently moved.Being new to the town, her mother decided to sign her up for Girl Scouts(女童子军).The benefits of the Girl Scouts were well-known:developing leadership skills, creating a strong sense of self and encouraging healthy relationships among others. One of the most important parts of the program involved developing healthy relationships, often leading to unbreakable bonds, sometimes through the Buddy(伙伴) Program.
Soon Walker joined Pisgah Girl Scout Camp in Brevard,North Carolina, where she was paired with a buddy named Laurie Luna in a four-person tent.At the camp,Walker and Luna’s lives were closely connected together. As a Girl Scout,Walker was taught to have someone to rely on,to know where she is going,to talk over things, and to make friends.Little did she know how important that single skill would be in her life.
One afternoon,a storm blew in and sent the girls all to their tents.Lightening struck a tree outside the girls’ tent.As bad luck would have it,Walker had been standing on her metal bed at the time.Lightening travelled from the metal clothesline between that tree and another one—burning all the bathing suits—went down into the tree roots, which were tied up into the floorboards of the tents, and hit her bed.Very soon,two-thirds of Walker’s body was burned.Walker was lying on the floor badly burned and unable to move.
The other three girls in the tent were frightened to death. They screamed and ran from the tent, not noticing what was happening to Walker, but Luna quickly realized her buddy was not among them.

M:We can take the train. It will be faster.I’ll book the tickets tomorrow afternoon.
W:Great!Oh,one more thing, don’t forget to check the weather forecast before we go.I’d hate to head out for a visit to the countryside and then have nothing but rain.

故选A项。
通读第三段内容可知,该段尾句“It is no wonder that the final approach is often referred to as the‘seven minutes of terror’.”
根据第三段中“So they regulated traffic density...a source of food.”

38.A 根据下文中的“The study showed that children who are read to six to seven days a week are almost a year ahead of those who are not being read to in terms of literacy skills.”
39.F 根据下文中的“When reading with your young child...the more words they will learn, and the more clearly they will be able to express their ideas in the future.”
及下文中的“And they will explore ideas and possibilities that they have never thought of before.”

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’d like to express my appreciation for your kind assistance as always. However,I’ve found some problems recently.
First,I find many keyboards of the library computers are in poor condition, which brings much inconvenience to the users.I wonder if you could fix or change them in time. What’s more, some types of magazines are out of date,so I wonder if you would find a more efficient way of buying new ones.
I would appreciate it if you could take my advice into consideration.
Yours sincerely,

Sleep, considered a luxury by many,is essential for a person’s health and happiness.Researchers have found that inadequate sleep and tiredness increase a person’s risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as obesity, high blood sugar levels, and heart disease. Now,a new study has found that getting enough sleep is also the key to improving academic performance.
Jeffrey Gross, the university science professor who led the research, was not trying to find the relationship between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class.Instead, the professor hoped the wrist-worn devices, which track a person’s physical activity, would show a connection between exercise and the academic achievement.
While Gross’s data showed no relationship between these two factors, the study found something surprising. As the researchers were analysing their data, they noticed that there was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep students got and their results in the course’s 11 quizzes, three midterm tests, and the final exam.
Even more interesting,it was not enough for students to just head to bed early the night before a test.Instead,it was the sleep you got during the days when learning was happening that mattered most.
The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher-performing student.“When you go to bed matters,” Gross says,“If you go to bed at 10,or 12,or 1 at night, and sleep for seven hours, your performance is the same. But if you go to bed after 2,your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So,quantity isn’t everything.”
Perhaps the most interesting was the huge effect that small differences in sleep patterns had on students’ grades. The entire course grades for students averaging six and a half hours of sleep each night were 25% lower than students who averaged just one hour more sleep.Similarly, students who changed their bedtime by even one hour each night had grades that dropped 45% below those with more regular bedtime.
24.Based on his original goals, which word best describes Professor Gross’s research findings
A.Complete. B.Accidental. C.Convincing. D.Doubtful.
25.Who were the people taking part in the study
A.University student athletes. B.Professor Gross’s own students.
C.Middle school chemistry students. D.Volunteers from different universities.
26.How did Professor Gross’s team measure academic performance
A.Making the students wear a special watch.
B.Giving the students regular after-class quizzes.
C.Using students’ university entrance test results.
D.Using the students’ normal test and quiz grades.
27.Based on the study’s findings, who is likely to perform best academically
A.A person who sleeps for a total of 7 hours each night.
B.A person who sleeps from 11 p.m.to 6 a.m.each day.
C.A person whose normal bedtime changes between 9 p.m.and 12 p.m.
D.A person who has a good night’s sleep the night before an important test.

Mental health and happiness are important to student success in higher education but rarely get the attention they need.Colleges and universities in the United States have been seeing increases in mental illness among students for decades.Promoting student mental health and emotional happiness on campus requires more than a well-functioning counselling centre. It calls for a campus-wide commitment action plan.
American undergraduate students have been reporting increasing rates of anxiety and depression for decades. In the 2018—2019 Healthy Minds Study(HMS) survey,40% of about 300,000 students at some 300 colleges and universities reported experiencing a mental health problem, and 60% said they were having difficulty accessing mental health care on campus or in the community.Other studies estimate that the dropout rate for US undergraduate students with mental health problems is over 40%,and that the popularity of mental health problems among graduate students is six times that of the general population.
Most academic institutions provide some mental health services, often through a counselling centre. But no matter how good that centre is,it alone cannot solve the problems. An important early step is for each institution to assess the extent of the crisis on its campus and whether there are enough treatment services either at the institution or in the local community.Another important question is whether there are elements of the institution’s own environment or culture that contribute to the problems that students are experiencing, like unreasonable workloads or deadlines for assignments.
Every college and university should carry out a comprehensive action plan to achieve this goal. This may require additional resources during a trying time for institutional budgets. But supporting all students is so important that financial priorities should be rearranged.
28.What happens to undergraduate students in America
A.They pay little attention to higher education.
B.Increasing students suffer from mental illness.
C.They are lacking in a sense of happiness.
D.They lose confidence in the future careers.
29.What are the statistics in paragraph 2 about
A.Terrible dropout rates. B.Decreasing general population.
C.Emotional happiness. D.Mentally healthy problems.
30.What is the key solution to fixing the problems
A.Analysing the present situation.
B.Opening more counselling centres.
C.Offering free mental health services.
D.Reducing unreasonable workloads.
31.How can we put a comprehensive action plan into practice
A.By giving some useful advice. B.By offering financial support.
C.By turning to the government. D.By getting enough trying time.

Singapore researchers say they have developed a form of electronic skin that can create a sense of touch. They hope their invention will give people with prosthetic(假体的) hands the ability to identify different objects.
The skin device measures 1 square centimetre. The system contains 100 small sensors that attempt to recreate things like textures(质地),temperature and even pain. The researchers call the device Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin(ACES),which can process information faster than the human’s nervous system, and is able to recognise 20 to 30 different textures. It can even correctly read Braille(布拉耶盲文) letters most of the time.
The system does not require the users’ movement to work. They just need to slide to feel textures. But in this case the skin, with just a single touch,is able to detect textures of different roughness.
A demonstration showed that the device could identify the difference between a soft ball and a solid plastic one.“When you lose your sense of touch, you essentially become numb and prosthetic users face that problem,” said Benjamin Tee,leader of the research team.“So by recreating an artificial version of the skin for their prosthetic devices, they can hold a hand and feel the warmth and feel that it is soft.”
Tee said his idea for the device came from a movie where a character loses his right hand and it is replaced with a robotic one.In the movie, the new hand is able to experience the touch sense just like the real one.
The artificial skin technology is still going through experiments and development. But Tee said there had already been a lot of interest in the system, especially from the medical community.Tee said similar inventions that his team had developed included see-through skin that could repair itself when torn and a material for wearable electronic devices that gave off light.
32.What can we learn about the artificial skin in paragraph 2
A.It is sensitive to high temperature.
B.It reacts faster than our nervous system.
C.It can recognise different objects.
D.It helps the users memorise Braille letters.
33.What can be inferred from Benjamin Tee’s words
A.The artificial skin feels like a real thing.
B.People with the artificial skin feel warm.
C.People don’t want to lose the sense of touch.
D.He is sympathetic towards the prosthetic users.
34.What inspired Benjamin Tee to create the artificial skin
A.The desire to help those in need. B.The life of the disabled.
C.A dream of earning more money. D.A scene from a movie.
35.Which word can best describe the artificial skin technology
A.Profitable. B.Stable. C.Promising. D.Challenging.

How to Reduce Gift Wrap Waste
Wrapping paper may have “paper” in its name, but that doesn’t automatically mean it can be recycled. 36 Try these suggestions for cutting down the amount of wrapping paper you throw away.
Reuse what you have. 37 It’s estimated that the US produces 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper annually, and 2.3 million pounds of that stays in people’s homes, awaiting reuse.
Use different materials. 38 Select basic brown thick paper that can be made up with a bow, ribbons, leaves, pine cones or markers.Repurpose newspapers, old posters and children’s school artworks as wrapping paper. There are plenty of other eco-friendly alternatives to wrapping paper that are just delightful and celebratory.
39 Use baskets, fabric, gift boxes or bags, tea towels, and more to contain and display your presents.Learn the Japanese art of wrapping, using beautiful knots(绳结) to fasten colourful, reusable fabric in attractive ways. This way, you’ll have no wrapping paper waste to deal with.
Ask for better paper. Shops store what customers want, and recyclability should be a top priority,so let that be known when you’re out shopping. As explained by Simon Ellin,CEO of the Recycling Association,a trade body that represents about 90 waste management companies and paper merchants in the United Kingdom,“It’s a campaign we’ve been on all year—do you really need to design non-paper wrapping paper Make paper with recycling in mind!” 40
A.Try zero waste.
B.Shop with that in mind,too.
C.You don’t have to choose shining paper to decorate a present.
D.In fact, many types of wrapping paper cannot be recycled due to their materials.
E.When wrapping paper is extremely thin,it has few good quality fibres for recycling.
F.Wrapping paper can be used many times if care is taken to unwrap it without tearing.
G.Having a mix of recyclable and non-recyclable paper is a real problem for companies.

Barditch High School decided to have an All-School Reunion, which offered former students a chance to reconnect with old friends, remember the fine times they had at school and celebrate with people they might not have seen for years.Over 450 people came to the event, and all the people there were full of excitement. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at the park.Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days.Ms Mabel Yates, the English teacher for over fifty years, was wheeled to the park.
Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans(叹息声) when Ms Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and just made them work hard.
Then Ms Yates started to speak,“I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be here.I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers, enjoyed your victories, and cried for your tragedies.I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students.Although I haven’t appeared in person,I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth of your children,in my imagination.”
Ms Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued,“It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me.Regardless of our motives,I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path.”
“There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart,” she added.

第二节
Meanwhile, she took out her collections from the bag with trembling hands.Obviously, they were kept well although they faded a lot.The students were astonished to see what was being shown.Holding them high, the old teacher told her dear students that they were the gifts she prepared for them after retirement. At that time, one gentleman with decent clothes came up to the teacher, made a bow and received the photos, handing them out to those around.Looking at the photos, almost everyone present was lost in thought, sitting up as if they were in class many years ago.
There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds. Everyone was cherishing the happy time they had together.Suddenly a thrilled voice came from somewhere,“Ms Yates,if you hadn’t pushed us so hard,we would not be what we are today.Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Then someone started clapping, which turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar.Lawyers, truck drivers, bankers and models were rubbing their eyes or crying openly with no shame all because of the words from the long forgotten English teacher.

Ever wondered if dogs can learn new words Yes,say researchers as they have found that talented dogs may have the ability to grasp new words after hearing them only four times.
While previous evidence seems to show that most dogs do not learn words, unless eventually very well trained,a few individuals have shown some extraordinary abilities, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.
“We wanted to know under which conditions the gifted dogs may learn novel words,” said researcher Claudia Fugazza from a university in Hungary. For the study, the team involved two gifted dogs,Whisky and Vicky Nina. The team exposed the dogs to the new words in two different conditions.
In the exclusion-based task, presented with seven known toys and one new toy,the dogs were able to select the new toy when presented with a new name.Researchers say this proves that dogs can choose by exclusion—i.e.,excluding all the other toys because they already have a name, and selecting the only one that does not.
However, this was not the way they would learn the name of the toy.In fact, when they were presented with one more equally new name to test their ability to recognise the toy by its name, the dogs got totally confused and failed.
The other condition, the social one, where the dogs played with their owners who pronounced the name of the toy while they were playing with the dog, proved to be the successful way to learn the name of the toy, even after hearing it only four times.“The rapid learning that we observed seems to equal children’s ability to learn many new words at a fast rate around the age of 18 months,” Fugazza says.“But we do not know whether the learning mechanisms(机制) behind this learning are the same for humans and dogs.”
To test whether most dogs would learn words this way,20 other dogs were tested in the same condition, but none of them showed any evidence of learning the toy names, confirming that the ability to learn words rapidly in the absence of formal training is very rare and is only present in a few gifted dogs.
24.What was the purpose of the study published in Scientific Reports
A.To better train dogs’ ability to learn new words.
B.To further confirm previous evidence about dogs.
C.To prove the extraordinary memory ability of gifted dogs.
D.To explore favourable conditions for gifted dogs’ new-word learning.
25.How did the dogs react when exposed to two new names in the first condition
A.Slow to understand. B.Quick to learn. C.At a loss. D.In a panic.
26.What was found about dogs’ new-word learning in the social condition
A.Learning through playing applied to most dogs.
B.The social condition helped dogs learn new words.
C.Dogs’ new-word learning turned out to be less effective.
D.Dogs shared similar learning mechanisms with children.
27.What’s the main idea of the text
A.Gifted dogs can learn new words rapidly.
B.Dogs identify newly-named toys by exclusion.
C.Dogs can acquire vocabulary through tons of training.
D.Gifted dogs have similar learning abilities to humans.

They say everything is bigger in Texas. While that may be true, some of the best things in Texas are quite small. Here is a case in point: tiny Mount Vernon,a town of just under 3,000 people. But if you do come across Mount Vernon, you might just get an intention to stay. That happens a lot around here, and it’s worth noting how remarkable that is.
Tom Wilkinson was born in Mount Vernon 87 years ago and moved back after he retired from his career as a college English professor in Dallas.Like many of his neighbours,Wilkinson can track his ancestors back to the pioneers who settled here in the 1870s.And like many,he values the simple life you can’t easily find in big cities.“People are still polite. They hold the door open for you,” he says.“We grow strong roots here!”
Preserving and honouring the past has been key to helping Mount Vernon survive. The residents have restored and reopened some of the empty stores, including the old barbershop, built more than 100 years ago.An old general store was turned into a combination space.Wander in on any given day and you might find a book club discussion or a work session for the local genealogy(家谱) group among the tables of people chatting over cups of coffee and plates of food.
Mount Vernon has the kind of big hearts you tend to find in a small town. For instance, when a local policeman was diagnosed with cancer last year,ten-year-old Lola McKellar set up a lemonade stand to raise money for his treatments. In 2015,when a 350-year flood sent water rushing into local homes,an army of volunteers showed up to get a wheelchair-bound neighbour and his wife to higher ground, and then came back to help others.
28.What does the author think of Mount Vernon
A.Remote. B.Wealthy. C.Primitive. D.Attractive.
29.Why did Tom Wilkinson come back to Mount Vernon
A.He preferred the simple and natural life. B.He could continue his language teaching.
C.He could live together with his ancestors. D.He could meet more neighbours of his age.
30.What can we infer about people’s way of life in Mount Vernon from paragraph 3
A.It is in danger of extinction. B.It is quickly changing over time.
C.It is conservative but harmonious. D.It is being disturbed by the outside world.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The history of Mount Vernon. B.The humanity of Mount Vernon.
C.The volunteers of Mount Vernon. D.The reconstruction of Mount Vernon.

If a president,a philosopher, and one of the best-selling writers credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too What if the secret was something you already knew how to do In fact, you probably do it every day. Here’s what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote:“It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson:“Walking is the best possible exercise.” Charles Dickens:“If I could not walk far and fast,I think I should just explode and perish.”
Researchers have found quite a lot of connections between walking and producing ideas.A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting.According to the study, walking outside—compared with on a treadmill(跑步机)—produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas.
The movement aspect of walking is obviously key.Our creative thinking is triggered(触发) by physical movement, which is exactly why walking—with your dog,a friend,or alone—feeds creative thinking.
The scenery is almost as important as the sweat.Breaking your routine with a walk can be a catalyst for fresh understanding of problems or projects.Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your familiar surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighbourhood. You can walk through a park and observe people joking or birds singing.Being inside, you’re more likely to be lifeless, which means you don’t have enough energy to wonder or create.
So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking Involve yourself more closely in your surroundings.Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world,to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun is reflected in puddles(小水坑).
32.How does the author introduce the topic
A.By providing background.
B.By borrowing phrases from great minds.
C.By giving definition.
D.By presenting well-known examples.
33.The underlined word “catalyst” in paragraph 4 means something .
A.causing a change B.stopping progress
C.catching eyes D.interrupting creativity
34.What can we learn from the passage
A.Nature exploration improves fitness.
B.Walking on a treadmill brings more energy.

In everyday life,we are often faced with important decisions—such as whether to apply for a new job or start a new course. 36 The more we can test our limits and abilities, the more we will learn about ourselves.New challenges are opportunities for us.
37 Rather than seeing the opportunity, often,we focus on what it will be like to fail.As a result, taking on a new challenge can be frightening. In these cases,we may avoid the challenge altogether and carry on going down the same path we were on.
We make some excuses to ourselves so that we can stay in our comfort zone. 38 By avoiding challenges,we don’t have the opportunities to learn about ourselves. We feel trapped. We are troubled by discomfort, anxiety, and the sense that things are not quite right.
There are times when we might want to avoid a challenge for good, realistic reasons.Perhaps, deep down,we are frightened of what other people might say and of what we might learn about ourselves. But instead of acknowledging that,we tell ourselves that now is not a good time,or that this isn’t the right opportunity. 39
To lead a true life,we need to take on new challenges that give us more opportunities to be ourselves. It is not that authentic people don’t feel the same fear;rather, they are simply more willing to face their fear. 40 The question is not how to lead a life in which we never feel the fear of failure, but rather, how we can move forward despite our fear.
A.In reality,it is our fear talking.
B.The fear of failure can be too much to bear.
C.However,we don’t always see it that way.
D.People think we can stay in our comfort zone and keep learning.
E.Taking on such challenges is an important part of growing as a person.
F.But the truth is that staying in our comfort zone is not necessarily comfortable.
G.They are open to new experiences, cherishing the challenges of learning about themselves.

On Wednesday night,it was the closing time of the mall. But there was an hour’s work,at least,to get everything cleaned up.It would be 11:00 p.m.before I finally got home.I hadn’t even had time to have dinner.I was starving. My feet ached. My whole body was filled with tiredness.I couldn’t wait to go to bed.But it would be only 6 hours before the alarm went off at 5:00 a.m.for my day job.
Things had been tight for over a year.My husband Paul’s business had taken a huge hit.I had a full-time job at a day care centre and somehow did my homework for my college class too. Then I had to work nights at the mall.Without me taking my second job, there wouldn’t be enough money to pay the bills, let alone buy any Christmas presents for our 15-year-old daughter,Marie.
I barely even saw Paul and Marie anymore.Marie was growing up,but a teenage girl still needed her mum.I worried about her, about us.Was she eating enough Was she keeping up with her schoolwork I wasn’t afraid of sacrifices.Everyone had to work hard for the family.I knew I was blessed to have two jobs, when millions of people couldn’t find one.
How I hoped to quit my job at the day care centre and obtain a full-time degree!I’d dropped down to one class a term.If I quit that, there was no way I’d find the willpower to try again.Besides, wasn’t I always telling Marie to keep hoping and never give up
My mind went back to the conversation I’d had with Marie earlier.Paul had dropped her off at the mall, where she was getting picked up for a babysitting job.“Remember we’re going Christmas shopping this night,” she said.“Now I’ll even have my own money.See you later.”
The floor was nearly done. The boss asked me to leave.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

I opened the back door of the mall and saw Marie outside with a bag of food, smiling.

第二节
I opened the back door of the mall and saw Marie outside with a bag of food, smiling. She finished her job an hour before. She figured I didn’t have time for dinner,so she bought me a bag of food with her own money earned by babysitting and waited for me outside the mall all the time. While I was eating, she told me that I was her hero and she admired everything I was doing for the family. When she was babysitting long hours or when she was tired of doing homework, she thought about my hard work. She remembered to have hope for life and never give up.
I pulled her tight against me.Tomorrow the alarm would still ring at 5:00 a.m.The bills would still be waiting. There would be more rough days ahead. And yet I was ready to face them together with Paul and Marie, all of us willing to work hard and make sacrifices and holding on to each other.Things would get better with the love of a good family.
