Every morning I walk outside and bring in the morning newspaper. There was a time when every house on both sides of the street had a newspaper in the driveway. There was also a time when every house had a landline telephone, but not anymore. Not for a long time.
My husband is less willing to accept the downward trend of print-edition newspapers,as he has worked in newspapers since the age of 16.Even before that,he was what you would call an “independent publisher”.

Recently,we were in a Chicago park with our grandchildren. My husband had a newspaper folded under his arm.He sat down and put the paper on the bench beside him.A young girl walked over, looked at the newspaper, picked it up and asked,“What’s this ”
I thought he was going to fall over. The colour faded from his face. His eyes rolled back in his head and his legs were giving out.I rolled up his paper and waved it under his nose. The smells from the ink woke him up.

Some people simply love paper—the feel, the portability, and the pleasure of piling them higher and higher until their wife cries,“Enough!” My husband was happy when he spent time with our youngest daughter and her husband. When they lived with us,they raced to pull the crossword puzzle from the paper every day. It’s hard to do a crossword online.Pencil doesn’t come off a computer screen as easily as you might think.

Now my husband will be very excited that I have found further proof that there may still be hope for the survival of print.I was chatting with a young mother who subscribes to the daily newspaper.I asked why she did something so conservatively. She looked shocked.“Because it’s print!” she said.“I love print! When the paper didn’t come one day, would you believe I called the main number to let them know and the lady said,‘Why don’t you just subscribe to the online version ’” She shook her head in disbelief.
My husband will be so thrilled that he might write this young woman into his will.I say we leave her all our piles of old newspapers.

B.It’s inconvenient for the old to read online newspapers.
C.There’re still young people who love printed newspapers.

C
根据倒数第二段中的“a young mother who subscribes to the daily newspaper”及“‘Because it’s print!’ she said.‘I love print!...’”

A good way to look at failure straight in the face is by writing a failure resumé(简历) or CV.Like social media, there,we usually only see our friends’ “highlight part”.When we look at others’ resumés,we get scared and think how ours doesn’t measure up.But even the most accomplished people have plenty of failure behind them—we just don’t see it.
Stefan felt this deeply as a scientist,so she wrote a different CV which of course boasted (夸耀) about her good grades,PhD,and published papers. But the way she deals with her failure CV is a model of what we could all do.

“My CV does not reflect my great academic efforts—it does not mention the exams I failed,my unsuccessful PhD or scholarship applications,or the papers never accepted for publication.During the interviews,I talk about the one project that worked, not about the many that failed,” writes Stefan in a column for Nature.
Stefan suggests keeping a draft on which you log, casually but regularly, every unsuccessful application, refused grant proposal and rejected paper.
And that’s the point:not to consider what we got wrong, but to use that information to both look at failure and realize it’s really okay, and also to use our failures for another purpose:as learning tools.

The point is to be real—with ourselves and about how the world works. Being real means taking an honest, critical, but also kind look at what we didn’t get right, and then doing our best to change what we can.Instead of focusing on how that failure makes you feel, take the time to step back and analyze the practical, operational reasons that you failed.
So,practice being okay with failure, and turning your failures into lessons learned. And yes, sometimes we have to learn those lessons more than once, letting go of what you can’t change. And keep moving forward to success.

B.Benefits she got from her failures.

8.Which of the following best describes the author’s opinion
A.No pains,no gains.
B.All roads lead to Rome.
C.Where there is a will,there is a way.
D.Failure is the mother of success.
D

During the outbreak, watching TV shows has become the most popular activity, according to a survey by Chinese market research company Guideline Research. The survey also points out that people have many ways to watch shows apart from cable TV.They include smartphones, computers, and tablets.

Culture shock or thinking differences can depress even the most experienced traveller. Remember that unlucky accidents with service providers may take place because of cultural or linguistic misunderstandings, and that getting angry will make communication more difficult and cause bad feelings. A taste of humour can make hard situations more meaningful and enjoyable to you, your fellow travellers and the local friends you’ve made.

Keep a journal or carry a small tape recorder and make regular entries or recordings. Taking a step back and telling an experience after some time will open the door to humour. Write a letter or an email to a friend when you find your humour reducing.Challenge yourself to tell at least one good story in this message and you’ll be surprised at how funny things can look when told to someone outside the situation.

Keep a list of funny things that you observe during your first few days in a new culture, and an explanation of what you think these things are all about. Look back on these lists later in the trip;what seemed strange before is probably familiar now,and your explanations may be funnier than the things themselves!Imagine writing an entry in a guidebook about a frustrating experience. How would you describe your experience to the later travellers What travel advice would you offer

Try to see yourself through the eyes of the locals. What might they find strange or funny about what you are doing at this moment When you find it difficult to overcome cultural differences, taking a new look at yourself can be very funny.Be careful not to sacrifice (牺牲) respect for local culture in order to lighten things up for yourself and fellow travellers.

At the beginning of my 8:00 am class one Monday at my college,I cheerfully asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been very good.He then proceeded to ask me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question reminded me of something I’d read somewhere before:“Every morning when you get up,you have a choice about how you want to approach life that day.” I said to the young man,“I choose to be cheerful.”“Let me give you an example,” I continued.

The other 60 students in the class ceased their chatter and began to listen to our conversation.
As soon as I got to my office,I called to ask for a tow truck(拖车).The secretary in the office asked me what had happened.“This is my lucky day,” I replied, smiling.“Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day ” She was puzzled.“What do you mean ”

“I live 17 miles from here,” I replied.“My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn’t.Instead,it broke down in the perfect place:off the freeway, within walking distance of here.I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today,it couldn’t have been arranged in a more convenient fashion.” The secretary’s eyes opened wide, and then she smiled.I smiled back and headed for class. So ended my story to the students in my economics class.

I scanned the 61 faces in the lecture hall.Despite the early hour,no one seemed to be asleep.Somehow,my story had touched them.Or maybe it wasn’t the story at all.In fact,it had all started with a student’s observation that I was cheerful.A wise man once said,“Who you are speaks louder to me than anything you can say.” I suppose it must be so.

Dr.Wiseman started “the laugh lab” project in September. It is the largest study of humour.Participants (参加者) are invited to log on to the laugh lab website, give a few personal details, tell their favourite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people.

The project will last for a year, and the organisers hope to finally discover the world’s funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose. The researchers want to know what people from different nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humour. The idea is that if we want to understand each other,we have to find out what makes us laugh.

This is a subject that has long attracted psychologists and philosophers. Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh,we tell the truth about ourselves.By December over 10,000 jokes had been submitted (递交).This gave the scientists enough evidence to make early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humour, for instance.
“Our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humour,” said Dr.Wiseman.“Males use humour to appear superior to others, while women are more skilled in languages and prefer wordplay.” Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humour. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humour”.But the French like their jokes short and sharp:“You’re a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $500 ” “Yes.What’s the second question ”

The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humour. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality.Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be safe.
Dr.Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computers. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing.Perhaps this is puters already seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to us.

In April,2005,I was approached by a student who was interested in our doctoral program. However, the first question out of her mouth was,“Do you offer any online courses ” Later that day,as I was reading the conference program guide trying for interesting presentations,I noticed many workshops on web-based learning and online education.I later attended two of those workshops and met several professors from different universities who had either taught online courses for quite some time or who were discovering the best practice for teaching online. These experiences helped me realize at least to some extent the degree of growth in online education.

My responsibilities for the term included gaining more understanding of online education.Consequently,I made several attempts to enrich my knowledge of distance learning and online teaching.I consulted with my colleagues who were teaching online courses. This helped me recognize the importance of getting materials prepared even before the start of a term.I also learned that online courses may consume more time than regular classroom teaching. And I attended several workshops regarding online education and established a network with those who were involved in online programs at other universities.I would consider these people as my consultants as I began to design my own online course.

Reading books can obviously make you a better, smarter entrepreneur. According to a 2018 study of over 160,000 adults in 31 countries, the more books that were present in participants’ childhood homes, the more competent they now are as adults with skills in literacy, mathematics, and technological problem-solving.Researchers note that book-oriented socialization, indicated by home library size, equips youth with lifelong tastes, skill and knowledge.

Growing up with home libraries boosts adult skills in literacy, numeracy and technological problem-solving beyond the benefits acquired from parental education or your own educational or occupational attainment.Kids who grow up in a home where reading is valued and modeled are more likely to be good readers.Strangely enough, though, advanced education doesn’t necessarily offset the “lots of books in the home” advantage.Adults who grew up with relatively few books in their homes and later earned a college degree had literacy levels approximately equal to adults who grew up in homes with large libraries but only attended school for nine years.

Jessica Stillman writes, surrounding yourself with more books than you could ever read says good things about your mind. Those books serve as a constant reminder of all the things you don’t know—which helps keep you intellectually hungry and curious. And possibly, this will keep you a little more modest, since research shows the quicker you are to admit you don’t know something, the faster you can then learn it.As Jeff Bezos says,a key sign of intelligence is the willingness to change your mind, something that only happens if you’re willing to admit that your current thinking may not be the best thinking.Modesty, learning and the willingness to change your mind when new data presents itself: That’s another three bonuses every entrepreneur can benefit from.

A.To keep readers intellectually hungry.
B.To stress the significance of modesty.
C.To remind readers of their ignorance.
D.To evidence the benefits of home library.

1.A 根据上文“My grandma is 95 years old...in her life.”以及下文“She appreciates the little things...loves to do is READ!” 又根据最后一段“I’ve learnt so much from her...so lost without her.”

2.G 根据上文“But what she really loves to do is READ!”以及下文“Bless her heart!”
3.E 根据上文“I also bring my three kids...in her driveway.”以及下文“Laughing her head off...all kinds of housework.”
4.F 根据上文“Every month Grandma gets a delivery...full of books.”以及下文“She can pass my books...onto her friend.”

5.B 根据上文“There have been a few times...she needed books.”以及下文“You see,Grandma respected money her whole life and she too raised three children alone, like me.”
