Everyone needs to be safe,to be loved and to have a sense of belonging. These are inborn and natural basic needs. In an effort to have these needs satisfied, many of us tend to please others. And it works for a while. We find that we experience less conflict with others, but the conflict within ourselves grows.Saying “no” produces a feeling of guilt and saying “yes” brings anger.
My father was in the military,so we moved frequently.Being shy,I didn’t make friends. What’s more,I grew up in a household where grades, image and how others saw our family were very important. In our household,a “C” was unacceptable,a “B” should have been an “A” and an “A” meant the lesson was too easy.I was too skinny,my sister was too fat and my brother’s lips and ears were too big for his tiny head.
To stop pleasing others is easier said than done. It’s a long process, one in which I am consistently working to be perfect. The turning point for me came shortly after I got married. The very first thing we did to end the cycle of catering to others was develop our own identity as individuals and then as a couple. And then we developed a strong set of core values and a vision for our future. The third and one of the most valuable things we did during this process was develop our own personal influence on others and we valued deeply the opinions of the wiser and more successful people around us.
Besides,we should understand that sometimes helping people actually hurts them. The struggle is necessary for success. The struggle strengthens character, making people determined. So sometimes allowing people to struggle is the best thing you can do for them.
24.How are we likely to feel when pleasing others
A.Satisfied. B.Guilty.
C.Happy. D.Angry.
25.What can we infer from the author’s experience as a child
A.He grew up doing a lot of housework.
B.His parents had great expectations of the children.
C.He realised the value of opinions from others.
D.It was hard for him to adjust to the moving life.
26.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.What steps the author took to go on pleasing others.
B.Why the author further developed his values and character.
C.How the author stepped out of the cycle of pleasing others.
D.When the author turned to others for their valuable opinions.
27.What does the author suggest doing
A.Helping others without delay. B.Thinking twice before offering help.
C.Refusing to help others. D.Leaving someone in trouble alone.

As you move out of your teens and into your 20s and 30s,your musical tastes start to solidify and you likely quit keeping up with popular music. Now,research has found the average age at which your music library is unlikely to change:33.
The study’s author reached this conclusion by analyzing data on US Spotify users and comparing it to artist popularity data from music intelligence company The Echo Nest.
To determine the age at which we stop seeking out new tunes, the author gathered self-reported age data from Spotify and looked at users’ “Taste Profiles”,which tracks how many times listeners have streamed individual artists. These artists were then matched to their popularity rank on The Echo Nest.
The average teen listens almost only to music among the Billboard, the 200 highest-ranking albums in the country, but this music represents a smaller part of their streaming as they age.In their teens, they listen to a lot of the same music, over and over again.Frank T.McAndrew,a professor of psychology at Knox College, explains that’s the“mere exposure effect” at work, and it basically means, the more we’re exposed to something, the more we like it.
There are many reasons why a person may stop streaming the current top musical hits, and the author looked into one by identifying Spotify listeners with large amounts of children’s music and nursery rhymes in their libraries. In other words, when users may have become parents.
But the study concludes with some good news for parents:“If you’re getting older and can’t find yourself staying as relevant as you used to,have no fear—just wait for your kids to become teenagers, and you’ll get exposed to all the popular music of the day once again!”
28.What happens after teens grow older
A.They quit listening to music. B.Their interest in music fades.
C.They change their music libraries. D.Their musical tastes become stable.
29.What is the way of the research
A.Interviews. B.Analyzing data.

30.How do teens develop their musical tastes
A.They listen to what they like repeatedly.

C.They experience different styles of music.
D.They like high-ranking music worldwide.
31.What’s the good news for parents in the last paragraph
A.Parents will regain their faith in music.
B.Parents will influence their teens in music.
C.Parents will hear their favorite music again.
D.Parents will enjoy the music for teens again.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study,Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know whether the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it.Later, the second group remembered the information better.People in the first group knew they could find the information again,so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹).Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information.Rather, they remember how to find it.This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow,we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet.Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories;that is,people are learning how to organise huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
32.Why does the passage begin with two questions
A.To introduce the main topic. B.To show the author’s attitude.
C.To describe how to use the Internet. D.To explain how to store information.
33.What can we learn about the first experiment
A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C.The first group did not try to remember the information.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
34.What do people do in transactive memory
A.To keep the information in mind.
B.To change the quantity of information.
C.To organise information like a computer.
D.To remember how to find the information.
35.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research
A.We are using memory differently.
B.We are becoming more intelligent.
C.We have poorer memories than before.
D.We need a better way to access information.

When writing the story of your life, don’t let someone else hold the pen. 36 Here are some ideas for writing a life story.
Live happily in your own way.You are not in this world to live up to the expectations of others, nor should you feel that others are here to live up to yours. What success means to each of us is totally different. To others, success may mean being a good parent.Success is only about spending your life happily in your own way.
37 There are thousands of possible paths up the mountain of life,so it really doesn’t matter which path you start off on.The only mistake is by wasting time running around at the base of the mountain, telling everyone that your life path is wrong.
Embrace (欣然接受) new ideas, lessons and challenges.Sometimes growing up means growing apart from old habits, relationships, and situations, and finding something new that truly moves you. 38 You should look very clearly into the unknown and enjoy it.Because when you come in contact with things that you don’t know, that’s when you’re learning, growing, and truly living.
Live honourably through kindness. If you live honourably,no matter how old you get, you’ll never lose your beauty. 39
Spend quality time with people you love. 40 People don’t live forever.Appreciate what you have, who loves you and who cares for you. You’ll never know how much they mean until the day when they are no longer beside you.Someday you will either regret not doing so,or you will say,“I’m glad I did.”
A.Lost time is never found again.
B.Appreciate the little things in life that mean a lot.
C.Change your path when you must, but keep moving forward.
D.There is nothing more wonderful than seeing life as an adventure.
E.For others,it may mean to simply be happy or it can be all of the above.
F.And remember, there is no better thing than reaching out and holding the hand of someone in need.
G.Make wise choices every day because the way you live each day is a sentence in the story of your life.

第一节
Last week,we took the foreign students to experience the authentic tea culture, which turned out to be extremely rewarding.
On arriving at the tea house, the foreign students were impressed by the unique tea pots and tea cups.I gave them a vivid introduction of tea culture and taught them how to make tea. Then I asked them to have a try.Washing the tea pots, adding tea leaves, and pouring water into the cups, they followed my instructions and immersed themselves in the charming tea culture.
At the end of the activity,we took a picture to memorize the unforgettable day.
第二节
Moved beyond words, the driver cooled his anger. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair. On seeing the bleeding cuts, the man took out his white handkerchief and wiped the wound gently with great care.A quick look told him that everything was going to be okay. When the driver was about to leave, the young brother stepped forward.“Thank you and may God bless you,” said the grateful child, tears filling his eyes.
The driver watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home.It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the damaged side door.He kept it there to remind him of this message:“Don’t go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!” God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts.Sometimes when we don’t have time to listen,he has to throw a brick at us.It’s our choice to listen or not.

Looking back on my childhood,I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made.
Although we were all brought up in the same way,my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects.Unlike them,I had no ear for music and languages.I was not an early reader and I could not do mental maths.
I have only the unmemorable memory of the house we lived in,of my room and my toys.Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist.I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations.I love discussing my favourite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens, which brings these observations together in my conscious mind. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honour with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity,a keen eye,a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist:One of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline,a quality I lack.A scientist requires not only self-discipline but all training, determination and a goal.A scientist,up to a point, can be made.A naturalist is born.If you can combine the two,you get the best of both worlds.
24.What impressed the author deeply during his childhood
A.Wildlife. B.Music.
C.Languages. D.Literature.
25.Why can’t the author remember his relatives clearly
A.He didn’t live with them for long.
B.The family was extremely large.
C.He was fully occupied with observing nature.
D.He was too young when he lived with them.
26.According to the author, what personality should a born naturalist have first of all
A.Being knowledgeable. B.Being self-disciplined.
C.Being full of ambition. D.Being full of enthusiasm.
27.Why does the author say he is a naturalist, not a scientist
A.He thinks he lacks some quality required of a scientist.
B.He thinks he has much trouble doing mental arithmetic.
C.He thinks he comes up with solutions in a most natural way.
D.He thinks he just reads about other people’s observations.

In the mid-1990s,Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind.A few years later, still attracted to the country,he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that.Hence this book,Chasing the Sea:Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea.It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way:Rustam, his translator,a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colourful English in California,Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand,Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana,he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼) followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan,he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American,as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book,or even a piece of reportage.Whatever it is,the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.

Owning a smartphone may not be as smart as you think. It may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are...but it also turns you into a workaholic,it seems.
A study suggests that,by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing,all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day.Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles.
The study by technology retailer Pixmania reveals the average UK working day is between 9 and 10 hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails,or making work calls.More than 90 percent of office workers have email-enabled phones, with a third accessing them more than 20 times a day.Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers confess(承认) they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they make work emails and calls outside their normal working hours. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 am and 7 am,with more than a third checking their first emails in this period, and a quarter checking them between 11 pm and midnight.
Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said,“The ability to access literally millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smartphones invaluable for many people. However, there are drawbacks. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smartphones mean that people literally cannot get away from work. The more constantly in contact we become, the more is expected of us in a work capacity(职位).”
32.What can we conclude from the text
A.All that glitters is not gold. B.It never rains but pours.

Why do students put off a big project until the last minute Believe it or not,it’s not because they are lazy,or they don’t want to perform well in school. They just always put more value on what is happening today than what will happen tomorrow. In addition,a big project may seem hard for them at the beginning. 36 Therefore,as a parent, helping your child break the project down into manageable parts such as researching, writing, and editing is necessary, which will help your child develop and practise his or her project planning and time management skills. 37
However, some children procrastinate (拖延) because they are afraid to fail or think they can’t live up to expectations. 38 For example, you can point out his or her efforts and past achievements, which can help your child develop a more positive attitude towards his or her work, making it easier to get started.
39 Children’s attention can be easily taken away from everything going on around them, such as toys, pets, even your conversation with others. 40 But you need to make sure this space has materials your child will need, including pencils, paper and erasers. Then your kid will be focused for a while.
A.So you should help build your child’s confidence.
B.A proper study space is also important to little kids.
C.They may not know how to get started by themselves.
D.Fears of failure and making mistakes are major causes of procrastination.
E.To avoid these,it’s better to create an especially quiet space for your child.

Deep in the forest,my husband and I had fun climbing over and crawling under the downed trees that blocked the dirt path before us.It was May,yet we walked up a snow-covered hill. When we noticed our jeans were wet up to our knees,it did not dampen our spirits. Not once did we say,“let’s turn around.” This was our vacation, and we were on an adventure.Little did we know this was the beginning of many more surprises.
The trail was marked as an easy one-kilometre hike, yet we were already walking a long distance. Our lightheartedness stopped when we came out into a clearing and saw a parking lot without our rental car in it.As my eyes scanned the surroundings, nothing looked familiar. My heart raced.I realised we were lost in a national park that did not officially open for another week.
Usually,I am the calm one in the relationship, but my husband surprised me with his calmness. This did not comfort me;in fact,it heightened my fear.As we walked,I asked my husband to call for help, but there was no cellphone signal in this isolated (偏僻的) area.
It was awfully quiet except for our footsteps hitting the road, and my heavy breathing. My husband suggested we conserve energy and walk slower. With each step on the road,my feet and thighs hurt while my mind raced with thoughts about people who got lost in the Canadian woods for days.
My vision sharpened.I noticed everything around me:the trees, rocks and snow.I thought we could eat the snow on the ground in case we needed water. For the first time in my life,I was ready and willing to get a ride, but we did not meet with a single car on the road.Silently,I prayed multiple times. We focused on each other, made joint decisions and connected through gratitude. We managed to stay on the main road and walked straight on.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance.

Just then,a friendly woman appeared,saying,“Hello.”

M:No.It’s for my 16-year-old son.
W:OK.Follow me,please...What do you think of this pair
M:They look nice. How much are they
W:They are 50 dollars,but I can give you a 10 percent discount.
M:Good.
(Text 7)
W:Why did you run out of the room and close the door like that
M:I was so angry.
W:Do you mean I misunderstood you
M:To be frank,you did,I think.
W:OK,but can you first explain what you did with the cash I left
M:The dog was sick and I didn’t want to call you on your vacation,so I used the money to take him to the animal hospital.
W:Now,everything is clear.It’s my fault.
M:Glad to hear you say that.
(Text 8)
W:I’m calling about a suitcase.I lost it yesterday.
M:Well, let’s put the details into the computer.
W:OK,it’s small and it’s black.
M:Were there any items inside it
W:Yes.I had office keys in there. My house keys were in my pocket.Um,there were a lot of documents. But the thing I’m really worried about—I mean, there is a camera I just bought.
M:It was yesterday. So that was on May 13th.
W:Yes.I was heading to my home.I was very tired when I was in the airport.I think that’s why I just forgot about the case.
M:What kind of transport were you using
W:I thought about getting the train, but that would have meant a bus journey as well, and I couldn’t be bothered so I decided to take a taxi at last. That’s where I must have left it.
M:Well,if someone hands it in,we’ll let you know.
W:Thanks.
(Text 9)
W:Hi,Mike.You don’t look too well.What’s going on
M:I just lost my job.
W:Oh,that’s too bad. So,have you been looking for another job
M:I just started, but the job market is very bad now.I’m anxious about it.
W:That’s really hard. What does your wife think about this
M:She’s trying to be calm, but I can tell she’s worried about our situation, too. And worse still...
W:Worse still What happened
M:My father-in-law is in the hospital resting. The doctor hasn’t given a clear answer yet.
W:I’m so sorry to hear that. But I’m sure the doctor will try his best.
M:I hope so.Uh,I’m now really in hot water.
W:Hey,cheer up.Well,I have some friends who might be able to help you find a job.I’ll see what they can do.

根据第三段最后一句“But I do have a crystal clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all the insects.”
根据第三段最后一句“But I do have a crystal clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all the insects.”
根据第四段前两句“I am a naturalist, not a scientist.I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations.”
根据最后一段第一句“But curiosity,a keen eye,a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist:One of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline,a quality I lack.”
故选A项。
根据第一段中的“It may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are...but it also turns you into a workaholic,it seems.”
根据文章第二段首句“A study suggests that,by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing,all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day.”
根据文章第三段中的“and a quarter checking them between 11 pm and midnight”可知,四分之一的人在晚上十一点和午夜之间检查他们的邮件。
文章首段提出“...but it also turns you into a workaholic,it seems.”,然后在下文进行了详细的介绍,由此判断文章中心内容是讲述智能手机无形中延长了工作时间,故选B项。
36.C 上一句“In addition,a big project may seem hard for them at the beginning.”
37.F 上文“helping you child break the project down into manageable parts such as researching, writing, and editing is necessary”提到,把大项目切分成可以完成的小部分,比如研究、写和编辑等,是非常有必要的。
38.A 根据上文“they are afraid to fail or think they can’t live up to expectations”可知,有些孩子做事拖延是因为害怕失败或者辜负期望。
39.B 根据下文“Children’s attention can be easily taken away from everything going on around them”可知,孩子们的注意力很容易受周围的影响。
40.E 根据上文“Children’s attention can be easily taken away from everything going on around them, such as toys, pets, even your conversation with others.” E项“为了避免这些,最好为你的孩子创造一个极其安静的环境”承接上文,其中的these就是指上一句中的“toys, pets, even your conversation with others”。
46.D 根据第二段首句中的“In my first class”可知,作者想在日本课堂上“尝试一下”(tried)。
47.C 根据上文“a successful lesson—everyone was speaking in English”可知,作者很“自信”(confident)。
48.A 根据空格前的Instead of以及下文“there was almost silence”中的silence可知,答案为A项。
49.B 根据前后文信息,尤其是“briefly and quietly within their groups”可知,“低语”(whispered)符合语境,其他三个词都有大声的氛围。
注意后文中“but I now realise that the students were acting as a team”也是暗示。
force“强迫”;organise“组织”;change“改变”;introduce“介绍”。
53.A continue“继续,延续”;appear“出现”;pass“通过”;deliver“传送”。
friendship“友谊”;individual“个体”;ability“能力”;competition“竞争”。
分析句子结构可知,此处是while引导的状语从句的省略形式,完整的句子应是“She first came across this phenomenon while she was researching North American children living in India.”。
此处考查固定句型find it+adj.+to do sth“发现做某事怎么样”,其中it是形式宾语,to do sth是真正的宾语。

My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance. In no time did we find ourselves heading for it.We were filled with hope and excitement to find such a building in the middle of nowhere. We climbed up the hill at a swinging pace as if all the pains were gone.As we approached,a sign came into sight, which read:Administration Office. However,it was not open for business. The empty hall made us nervous all at once.We stood there hopelessly wondering what to do next.
Just then,a friendly woman appeared, saying,“Hello.”I could barely hold back my enthusiasm and blurted out,“We’re lost!” She comforted us and opened a room for us to take a break.Seeing we were cold and hungry, she treated us with hot chocolate. After studying the map,we figured out that our car was parked over three kilometres away. She offered us a ride back to our car and we accepted gladly.I felt relieved to see our rental car again. What a blessing to have such an unforgettable experience!

“Hey,how are you doing What grade are you in What’s your favorite book Yeah,I got it.”
You probably thought you’d walked into a library with a greeting like that.In fact, you’ve entered the workplace of Courtney Holmes, the Storybook Barber.
Two years ago,Dubuque,Iowa, held its first annual Back to School Bash, offering needy families a chance to learn about free resources in the community.Holmes agreed to take part in it.He was holding two jobs at the time—one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber.Saturday was his busiest haircutting day,but he chose to devote his time to underprivileged(底层的) kids so they’d look sharp on that first day of classes. But then he had a sudden idea.“The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years.Five to ten years old kids would hold a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes gave them a haircut. If they had any difficulty,Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review the book, from the characters and vocabularies to the themes—just like in school, only more fun.“These kids are eager to learn,” said Holmes.“And they are able to open their hearts there.”
Holmes admitted he,too, benefited from the activity.“There was a seven-year-old boy who struggled through his book, stuttering(口吃) over words even though he didn’t have a stutter,” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice.“When the child came back next time,he read it with no problems. That inspired me.”
24.Why did Holmes take part in Back to School Bash
A.To reduce the parents’ pressure. B.To earn more money.
C.To help poor kids look good. D.To work in the local schools.

C.They learn more here than in school.
D.They get along well with Holmes.
27.What can we best describe Holmes as
A.A responsible social worker.
B.A hard-working barber.
C.A kind-hearted volunteer.
D.A busy and loving parent.

A new study, published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, reveals that non-human animals’ tears are not so different from our own.The chemical similarities are so great,in fact, that the composition of other species’ tears—and how they’re adapted to their environments—may provide insights into better treatments for human eye disease.
Previously, scientists had studied closely only the tears of a handful of mammals, including humans, dogs, horses, camels and monkeys. In the new study,Brazilian veterinarians analyzed the tears of reptiles and birds for the first time, focusing on seven species.
Tears, which are released from tear tubes, form a film over the eye that’s composed of three ingredients:mucus, waler and oil.The mucus coats the eye’s surface and helps to attach the film to the eye,the water is a natural salty solution containing crucial proteins and minerals, and the oil prevents the eye from drying out.
Humans are the only known species to produce emotional tears;the expression “crocodile tears”,which refers to a person’s phony display of emotion, comes from the mysterious tendency of crocodiles to release tears as they eat.
But tears play key roles beyond weeping, notes Lionel Sebbag at Iowa State University, who was not involved in the new research. They help with vision by lubricating(润滑) and clearing the eye. They also protect the eye against infection and provide nutrition for the cornea, the eye’s clear outer layer, which lacks blood tubes,he says.
Learning how reptiles and birds use tears may also inspire new medications for conditions such as dry eyes, which occurs when tear tubes don’t produce enough oil.The disease, common in cats, dogs and people, can sometimes lead to blindness.
28.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The source of tears. B.The composition of tears.
C.The classification of tears. D.The definition of tears.
29.What does the underlined word “phony” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Tricky. B.Regretful.
C.Cold. D.False.
30.Which statement does Lionel Sebbag agree with
A.Weeping contributes to eye disease. B.The cornea has rich blood tubes.
C.Tears oil and clear the eyes. D.More tears mean better vision.

B.A Better Treatment for Eye Disease
C.Non-human Tears Promise New Cures
D.Other Species’ Tears Are Similar to Humans’

The Pomodoro technique is probably one of the most powerful techniques in all of learning. All you have to do is set a timer for 25 minutes, and then just focus as attentively as you can for those 25 minutes.
Now if you start focusing on your work, and then you look up at the timer and two minutes have passed, you may feel like you can’t hold on.And just let the thought go by,and return your focus to whatever you are working on.And when that 25 minutes is up,you relax a little bit.You might wonder why that 25 minutes is the magic number, and the reality is we don’t really know. There’s not a lot of research on the Pomodoro technique, which is surprising because it’s so incredibly popular and people find it very useful.
But there’s an interesting tidbit(小趣闻) related to the Pomodoro technique—when you just think about something that you don’t like very much,it stimulates a part of the brain that experiences pain. And so the brain naturally enough shifts its attention to something else, like Meta or Twitter or something like that.
And how does the Pomodoro technique work, when you do it You don’t want to sit there and think,“I’m going to work on this problem and get it all finished.”You just want to think,“I’ve got 25 minutes where I just have to work on something.” Don’t even think about what that thing is.What that does is that it slips in under your brain’s radar. It doesn’t stimulate so much that pain in your brain;and then that pain in the brain, research has shown, lasts for 20 minutes.
So if you work for 25 minutes, you will suddenly find yourself getting into the flow because you’ve gone past that painful period. So the Pomodoro technique is effective in many different aspects.
32.Which is an example of using the Pomodoro technique
A.Reading a novel for 25 minutes.
B.Spending 25 minutes scanning WeChat.
C.Setting a timer for 25 minutes to do a tough task.
D.Attending a lecture for 25 minutes with two minds.
33.What can be inferred about the Pomodoro technique from paragraph 2
A.The first two minutes is vital. B.25 minutes is a magic number.
C.More research is around the corner. D.You may get discouraged when using it.
34.Why is the tidbit mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To further explain the Pomodoro technique.
B.To arouse interest in the Pomodoro technique.
C.To highlight how to use the Pomodoro technique.
D.To prove the effectiveness of the Pomodoro technique.
35.How does the Pomodoro technique work
A.It boosts your concentration. B.It helps your mind go faster.
C.It urges you to finish your work. D.It shortens the pain time in your brain.

Reading books can exercise your brain.Kids who started reading at an earlier age go on to perform better on certain intelligence tests. As one gets older,it might help slow down or even stop cognitive(认知的) decline. 36 Many Americans don’t read frequently. It’s time to reverse (反转) this trend to give your brain’s gray matter a good workout.
37 When you have some down time—you’re waiting for a friend,or doing a task that doesn’t require your full attention—you can open your text instead of pulling up your favorite smartphone game. 38 While paper is still the clear winner in the court of public opinion, science hasn’t proven that physical books are better than digital ones.
Academic research has mostly focused on the ability to remember.A study took place in a laboratory setting:Students all read the same text, but some looked at the words on paper and others viewed an on-screen PDF.It turned out that no meaningful difference between the two media existed. As for audiobooks, they affected the brain’s gray matter somewhat differently. 39
Ultimately,if you hope to get a reading habit going, you shouldn’t dismiss any form of books. 40 Don’t be afraid to change things up depending on the occasion.
A.Audiobooks still affect your thoughts and feelings.
B.Go with what makes the most sense for your needs.
C.Words on a page can improve the emotional intelligence.
D.This brings about a great debate:pages vs screens vs audio.
E.Keep a book,an e-reader,or an audiobook app on you as you go about the day.
F.Despite this, the overall book-reading time for Americans is on the decline.
G.However, they stimulated the brain just as deeply as black-and-white pages.

An adventure waited for us ahead. It was only a little after 12:00 o’clock and it couldn’t hurt to go on a little exploration time.Could it
We didn’t want to play games at home anyway so I asked Mum,“Can we go to Panisha Island to explore ”
“Oh alright!I guess it’s only a short boat ride away.Be back by 5:00 o’clock!”Mum answered us.
We thanked Mum and got on our blue bike.We got to the pier (码头) and bought a two-way ticket to Panisha and back. The sea air blew on our face like silk.I stared out into the sea.I must have stared for a while because soon I heard “PANISHA ISLAND!”
The moment we got off the boat,we were fascinated with everything around, the clear water, the blue skies, the singing of the birds...but we had no time to appreciate these. We impatiently rushed to what was called Tiger Jungle, surrounded by vast expanses of jungle with various puzzles and traps waiting for us to explore.Lizards, birds, and lots of bugs.Suddenly a rabbit sprung out, staring at us,as if to ask us where we were from.Bees and spiders were also annoying unprepared us.Seeing a snake winding its way in the bushes farther,I let out a scream!Jack smiled slyly (顽皮地) and commanded me to be calm.
A tough passageway led us to natural pools, shallow waters with fishing spots, overgrown bushes and even a plane crash site.“Why not catch some fish here ” I excitedly suggested.Jack was hesitating when a roar(吼叫),like a true tiger, came out from the farther jungle!Jack thought hard and decided to get back quickly.

根据Portland Rose Festival中的“Children enjoy the Junior Rose Festival with their own parade and a royal court.”
根据TomorrowWorld中的“Hidden deep in the forest of Chattahoochee Hills...As a result, their annual festival is a perfect mix of nature and creative fun.”
由第三段中的“Holmes agreed to take part in it”和“but he chose to...so they’d look sharp on that first day of classes”可知,Holmes 参加Back to School Bash是想要通过为贫困孩子们理发,让他们更好看。
根据第三段最后一句和第四段第一句中的“he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years”可知,在接下来的两年里,Holmes会在每个月的第一个星期二免费为孩子们理发,故这种服务每个月一次,故D项正确。
根据画线词后文“display of emotion, comes from the mysterious tendency of crocodiles to release tears as they eat”可知,鳄鱼进食的时候会流泪,所以“鳄鱼的眼泪”指的是一个人虚假的情感表达。 tricky“狡猾的”;regretful“后悔的”;cold“寒冷的”;false“虚假的”。
根据倒数第二段中的“But tears play key roles beyond weeping...help with vision by lubricating and clearing the eye.”
根据第一段中“All you have to do is set a timer for 25 minutes, and then just focus as attentively as you can for those 25 minutes.”
由第二段中的“Now if you start focusing on your work, and then you look up at the timer and two minutes have passed, you may feel like you can’t hold on.”
由第三段中的“But there’s an interesting tidbit related to the Pomodoro technique...like Meta or Twitter or something like that.” 故选A项。
故选A项。

once more“再一次”;ever since“从那时到现在”;just then“就在那时”;then again“其次,还有”。
in pain“痛苦地”;in order“整齐地”;in comfort“舒适地”;in disappointment“失望地”。故选A项。
47.B 根据下文的“I discovered a long cut at his back with bloods”可知,此处指“靠近”看考拉。 quick“迅速的”;close“靠近的,紧密的”;eager“渴望的”;anxious“焦虑的”。故选B项。
48.C 根据下文的“attacks or cuts of something sharp in some other way”可知,此处指有受伤的“痕迹”。 feature“特征”;symbol“象征,符号”;sign“痕迹”;series“系列”。
crucial“重要的”;small“小的”;distinct“明显的”;tricky“棘手的”。故选D项。
50.C 根据下文的“my kindness”和“After the treatment”可知,考拉“理解”作者的好意。 ignore“忽视”;answer“回答”;understand“明白,理解”;anticipate“预料”。故选C项。
51.D 根据下文的“the cut with the liquid”可知,此处指作者为考拉“治疗”伤口。 touch“触摸,感动”;feel“感觉”;tap“轻敲”;treat“对待,治疗”。
It occurred to sb that... appealed to“呼吁,吸引”;refer to“提到,涉及”;occur to“发生,想起”;address “写收信姓名和地址”。故选C项。

54.D 根据句中的“After the treatment”和“in the wild”可知,考拉“消失”在野外。 explore“探索”;rush“猛冲”;jog“慢跑”;disappear“消失”。故选D项。
55.B 根据下文的“the hard time and live his life as he should”可知,作者希望考拉能够在这段艰难的日子里“幸存”下来。experience“体验”;survive“幸存”;escape“逃脱”;have“有”。

March 7,SundayFine
Today I participated in a rewarding activity—Tree Planting organized by the Student Union of our school.
Early in the morning,my classmates and I headed for a hill nearby with tools and seedlings. The birds were singing happily, and the butterflies were dancing over the flowers and grass. On our arrival,we got down to working together as planned. Some dug the pits and put seedlings in,some filled the pits with earth, and others watered them.Through our joint efforts, the hillside was lined with rows of seedlings, bathed in the sunshine.
Exhausted as we were,we tasted the joy of labor.
第二节
Suddenly,I missed a step and fell into the pool.I was extremely scared, struggling in the water.Seeing what had happened,Jack swiftly reached out his right hand, but unfortunately beyond my reach. Then he immediately picked up a stick from behind and gave the other end to me.However, the bank of the pool was too slippery and I was too scared to move.“Calm down!Grab at it firmly!” Jack encouraged in a loud voice. With his help and all my strength,I successfully got out.
There was not much time left for the return trip.Afraid of missing the boat back,Jack dragged me to the pier in a hurry.Meanwhile,I was looking back once in a while for fear that a beast might catch us up.We managed to catch the return boat finally but I had not yet got over the scare.Frightened and tired as I was,I congratulated myself on returning safe and sound. My brother and I harvested a meaningful exploration and really spent a brand new weekend.
