About five years ago I started at a new school when my family moved to Iowa.I was just a little excited, but I worried I would never fit in with the other sixth graders.
Lucy,a girl in my class, who I thought was not ready for change, didn’t like me from the start. In fact,I was pretty sure she hated me.I would ask her a question, and I could tell she thought I was a total fool.
My teacher made us sit by each other for the last term.Lucy was horrified (惊骇的).I didn’t wear make-up (化妆品),and I didn’t wear those terrible bell-bottom pants.I didn’t exactly look like the coolest girl. But,I kept smiling at her, though she rolled her eyes, and I kept telling her she looked beautiful, even when she was angry.
Finally,Lucy let me talk to her, even in sight of her “cool” friends. She started telling me how beautiful I looked.I still remember that the first time when she smiled at me saying that, and I smiled right back, telling her thanks.Lucy invited me over to her house for a party, and talked to me all the time instead of her other friends.Lucy, the girl who hated me,called me her best friend. After that,we still were good friends a whole year later.
I may have moved to Arizona after that, but I will never forget Lucy. It’s funny — I still remember her birthday. She was a great friend. And to think, she considered me her enemy at first.Though it was hard, and it felt like I was wasting my time, and losing my dignity (尊严),I still smiled at Lucy when she made fun of me.I’m not stupid.I didn’t think she was right in doing those things, but I still put up with it.And we became great friends.
About two weeks ago,I read a sentence by Abraham Lincoln:“Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends with them ” Immediately,I smiled, thinking of Lucy. That sentence just reminded me how great it was for me to change Lucy into my friend in that state of Iowa five years ago.

When a child is told he is “uncool”, it can be very painful. He may say he doesn’t care, and even act in ways that are opposite of cool on purpose. But these are simple ways to handle sadness by pretending it’s not there.
Helping a child feel better in school has to be careful. If you say,“Why are you worried about what other children think about you It doesn’t matter!” Children know that it does matter.Instead,an active way may be the best. You could say,“I’m going to do a couple of things for you to help you feel better in school.”
If a boy is having trouble making friends, the teacher can help him.The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to contribute to class projects. This is how the other children learn how to value his good qualities and to like him.A teacher can also raise a child’s popularity in the group by showing that he values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child,or let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc.
There are things that parents can do at home, too.Be friendly when your child brings others home to play.Encourage him to invite friends to meals and then serve the dishes they consider “super”.When you plan trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends.
What you can do is to give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then,if he has good qualities,he can start to build real friendship of his own.

Throughout my educational years despite the kind teachers I had met,I never felt interested in writing until I met her,Mrs Kelley. At first,I believed that writing would still be my worst class.Gradually,my fondness increased. She taught the lesson in such a lively way and her word choice impressed me.But that was not what made her my favourite.Unlike other teachers, after instructions, she gave an enormous amount of freedom in what we wrote, allowing us to create our own stories using our imagination. And that mattered most.
There was one really revolutionary event: the historical fiction unit.We were to invent our own stories using the period we were given.World War Ⅱ was mine.At that point,I was just looking for a good grade.Rather than creating a mundane story,I wanted to make a story that I felt was meaningful. As I progressed,I was pulled further and further into the reality that I had made.Grammar no longer existed,as my hands gained acceleration. When I typed the final word,my hands trembled with excitement.Briefly,I read it over and then submitted the draft.
In the midst of anxiousness,Mrs Kelley responded. She pointed out some mistakes and gave some suggestions.Sadly, there were no comments of recognition.I fixed the errors and moved on.But when waiting for the final grade,I erased all the unrealistic thoughts that wandered in my mind.
In the next class, surprisingly, after handing back my paper,Mrs Kelley mentioned that my story was very good.I looked at her in confusion.Soon excitement stirred inside me.I found a“+5” attached to the score. She had given an extra point in “Plot”,adding an “Excellent!”.No other teacher had done this.On that day,I felt what it means to be a writer.Mrs Kelley introduced me to the beauty of literature and made writing so enjoyable.

A.Recognizing his talent.
B.Finding the joy of writing.
C.Determining his lifetime career.

One winter Sunday,my little sister,Colleen,and I built the greatest snowman ever.We gave him a carrot nose,beautiful hat,cozy scarf and gloves.He was a masterpiece(杰作).
The next morning when looking outside,we smiled lovingly at him over our meal.We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school.A lot of kids went past our house,so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!
The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight,we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone!We only found a broken stick here,a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere.Worst of all,the snowman’s once-proud carrot nose lay limp(无力的) and half-eaten.
What had happened We were both astonished and angry. But then,we were only kids, who wouldn’t have anything taking away our happiness.Actually we knew only one thing:Our snowman would rise again. So we rebuilt him.
The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪).For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we’d return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.
By Saturday morning,we had a plan.We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶) from Mom,filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning,it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set,and we waited for the snowman bullies(破坏者) to come.

Ⅶ.On Monday morning, hiding behind the window,we soon saw what we were waiting for.It turned out that there were three of them from our school. They sneaked up on our snowman and laughed.Taking their places on either side, they pulled back their legs to deliver powerful kicks. But the moment they hit the hard ice block of the base, sneers turned into shock, then agony and tears. They shouted and cursed, gritting their teeth and stomping their feet.
Seeing their pained look,we couldn’t help laughing. They were too funny as they hopped away holding their damaged feet.We just couldn’t contain our happiness and excitement. With a hearty laugh,we came out of hiding and sprang into the yard from inside the house.“An eye for an eye!Justice done!” We yelled behind them. And that was the end of our problems with the snowman bullies.Ever since then, our snowman was kept guarded and in shape until it happily melted into spring water and finally wove into our sweetest childhood memories.UNIT 1分层跟踪检测(一)TOPIC TALK & LESSON 1

What Is Social Media
Not many people ask the question “What is social media ” anymore. Social media has been around for years now,and most of us would probably describe it as any Internet medium that can be used to share information with others, including blogs, forums, applications, games, websites and other stuff.
But let me ask you this: what exactly is so “social” about sitting before a computer setting up a blog and blogging for days without anybody reading it,or scrolling through your Meta feed of information from 500 friends you barely know If you ask me,it can be way more antisocial than anything.
Social media is not a “thing”. It’s not just Meta,WeChat and Weibo. It’s more of a frame of mind and a state of being. It’s about how you use it to improve your relationships with other people in real life. However,we tend to rely on technology and social media so much that it can actually tear apart those relationships.
Social media isn’t about numbers. When someone says “social media”,web giants like Meta,Twitter,WeChat and Weibo instantly pop into our minds, often because they have more updates, more friends, more followers, more links, more photos and more everything. We tend to get distracted by the number game, thinking “volume, volume, volume”. It leads to a lot of meaningless noise and information overload. As the old saying goes, quality over quantity is usually the way to go. So,social media is not just about lots of people aimlessly spreading lots of information.
Social media needs to have an “IRL” factor — an Internet slang standing for “In Real Life”. It should affect how a person thinks or acts offline. After all, social media shouldn’t be an end in itself. It was built to enhance your actual social life,in real life. Take for example an event that a person attends because he is invited by the host on Meta through a Meta event page. Something like that definitely has the IRL factor. Likewise,a WeChat photo that touches someone so much that they feel the need to bring it up and describe it to someone else during a dinner date also has the IRL factor.
So,is it really considered to be social to spend an hour scrolling through photos on Weibo, with no thoughtful or emotional effect and no interaction with others In fact, there is no wall between real life and Internet life where true social media exists. Social media is not a specific place on the Internet or just a thing you use to see what other people are doing. It’s all about creating meaningful experiences and relationships wherever you may be.

When I was about 12,I had an enemy,a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings.Week by week her list grew:I was very thin.I wasn’t a good student.I talked too much.I was too proud, and so on.I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last,I became very angry.I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked,“Are the things she says true or not Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like Well, you now have that girl’s opinion.Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true.Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me.To my great surprise,I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin),but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That’s just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feel hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you.Our world is full of people who think they know your duty.Don’t shut your ears.Listen to them all,but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.” Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life,I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

If your friendships are going to last a long time, you simply have to accept that things will always change. But never fear. 1 Here is a little of their advice.
Start with the friendship triangle.
Shasta Nelson is a friendship expert who gives a concept called the “friendship triangle”. 2 Anyway, the base is positivity, and two sides of the triangle are consistency (一致性) and vulnerability (脆弱性).If your friendship has something wrong,it’s much easier to see what is off balance and adjust in time.
Figure out what you value.
Another helpful tool comes from Rachel Wilkerson Miller.Wilkerson Miller recommends looking at friendships through your TME — time, money and energy.“Those are your most valuable resources,” she says,“Think about where your TME is going, how you’re spending it and who you’re giving it to.” 3
Don’t be afraid to ask for things.
4 Being direct can feel awkward, but if you get in the habit of stating your needs, you can avoid a pile of hate much later on.“Ask for exactly what you need,”Havrilesky,a famous writer, says,“sometimes it can work like medicine. So ask!”
5 During long life, you go through a lot of different versions of yourself. That can mean that sometimes,a friend is only present for a certain chapter—and that is OK.
A.Not every friend is going to be there forever.
B.We offer some advice from experts to help you deal with the shifts in your friendship.
C.Friendship is like a ship to carry you further.
D.The friendship triangle is made of three equally long sides.
E.If you waste these resources,it might be time to shift the relationship.
F.You should get comfortable asking for what you need.
G.The expert recommends being clear when your friendship is no longer the same.

Most children now chat daily either online or through their mobile phones. They are connecting to a huge number of other children all over the world. Some are shy “in real life” but are confident to communicate with others online;others find support from people of their own age on relationship issues,or problems at home.
Sometimes the online world, just like the real world, can introduce problems, such as cheating or arguments.Going online is great fun,but there are also a few people who use the Internet to do bad things.Children must know that there are both the good things and the dangers on the Internet.
To keep children safe, your management must cover the family computer.Just as you decide which TV programmes are suitable, you need to do the same for the websites and chatrooms your children visit.Remind your children that online friends are still strangers and there are dangers too.
Computer studies are part of schoolwork now,so it’s likely that your children may know more than you do.We get left behind when it comes to the interactive areas of websites, like chatrooms and message boards, which are especially strange. The language of chat is strange to many parents, too.Chatters love to use abbreviations (缩写) such as:atb—all the best, bbfn—bye bye for now,cul8er—see you later,gr8—great,Idk—I don’t know, imbl—it must be love, kit—keep in touch, paw—parents are watching, lol—laugh out loud, xlnt—excellent!

It was summer when I was asked whether I wanted to go to Malibu(an island in Canada)with my church to serve the military families. At first,I heard this and thought,“You are asking an eleven-year-old in his last weeks of summer if he wants to go on a trip with his mom to Canada to serve other people ” Of course,I responded with a kind refusal, but my mom found a way to convince me to go.
When we were on the ferry to the island,a thousand thoughts were running through my head, such as “What am I going to do here ” “Am I even going to be useful ” and “Why am I even here ” When we got to the island,I was asked to do the childcare.I was actually somewhat excited because my friend said he would help me.The first time I met the kids,I got to know them pretty well. They were all between the ages of four and six. Some of them stayed behaved and a few of them started acting crazy and would even hit and push the other kids.
With those kids,I was very strict, but I still tried to be positive and keep a smile. After all, they were just innocent kids.In most of the time,I needed to help them with things like washing clothes, and setting tables.Even though it sounded dull,I enjoyed every second of it.One of the things I did in my free time was to play pool(打台球).I made friends with a few kids there. They were really easy to talk to.Some of the things we talked about were sports, food, video games, and most of all pool.
Even though I was only at Malibu,Canada for one week,I feel like I made spiritual changes in some people’s life. You don’t have to go above and beyond to have an influence on someone’s life.In the end,it all comes down to what way you changed them.It could have been in a spiritual way or a mental way as long as you had a positive effect. So go out and try to make a difference in this world.
5.How did the author react when asked if he liked to serve the military families
A.He hardly believed it.
B.He was very confused about the decision.
C.He refused to accept it.
D.He was worried about the trip.

A.to take care of kids there

A.He found the kids very hard to deal with.
B.He didn’t quite like the badly-behaved kids.
C.He managed to get along well with most kids.
D.He shared common hobbies with some kids.
8.What does the author mainly tell us in the last paragraph
A.He regretted having taken the trip.

D.What to do to make a greater difference.
Ⅷ.七选五
During my first year teaching middle school students,I found myself in a bit of a dilemma. When the bell rang,I knew that my class should be orderly and on task. 1 I had an activity on the board for the students to complete. However,no one did it.Instead, they just kept chatting and laughing.
I desperately needed some classroom management strategies(策略) that actually worked. 2 She gave me the following idea: When the bell rings, write down the names of everyone who is talking on the board, and tell them if they speak out of turn again they will receive a discipline essay.
I tried it.Wow,it worked! 3 Firstly, watch carefully for the very first person that talks and be sure to give him a warning in the form of his name on the board.Meanwhile, say something like,“Taylor, this is just a warning to you.You are not in trouble at this point, but you will be if you continue talking.”
4 There would still be days when the bell rang and half the class were still talking, but instead of allowing my stress level to rise,I would calmly start writing names. It normally only took three or four names for the class to notice. Then they would quickly quiet down.
If you teach high school,or are just not crazy about this method, look for ways to adjust it.For example, you could give a student a warning by putting a Post-it on their desk. 5 But if you’ve had trouble keeping order in your classroom,I do highly recommend that you try it.
A.But it simply wasn’t.
B.Now let me make an introduction.
C.Eventually,I went to an old teacher.
D.Therefore,I referred to some relevant books.
E.And I felt like a failure in my own classroom.
F.Writing names down may not be a good fit for everyone.
G.This method made the biggest difference at the start of class.

4.D 根据第二段最后一句话“Together, the three of them 9 Harry out of the water as quickly as possible.”
7.A 根据下文“Together, the three of them 9 Harry out of the water as quickly as possible.”
14.A 根据上文“I am 10 to Sarah”可知Harry对他的狗是非常感激的,结合该句中的“in a way that every 15 loves:with food.”
