Born in Chengdu,Southwest China’s Sichuan Province,to a Canadian missionary family in 1915,Crook came into the world. While Isabel Crook’s parents were engaged in setting up schools and education institutions in Southwest China,Crook herself was more interested in anthropology(人类学) and the ethnic minority groups in China. She was very curious about what was going on around her.
At the age of 23,Crook graduated from a Canadian college with a master’s degree and began carrying out field research in Li County of Sichuan Province. In 1947,Crook and her journalist husband were warmly welcomed by the Communist Party of China(CPC) to observe and study the revolutionary land reform taking place in China. In 1948 the couple accepted an invitation from CPC leaders to teach at a newly-built foreign affairs school. The school was the forerunner of today’s Beijing Foreign Studies University(BFSU),which has seen over 400 ambassadors(大使) and 1,000 counsellors walk through its doors. As a teacher at BFSU she laid the foundations for foreign language education in China.
As two of the first three foreign teachers at the school,Isabel and David Crook brought new Western teaching methodologies to the classroom.Michael Crook noted that since some students were extremely poor during the 1950s and 1960s,his parents were especially sensitive to their situation and did what they could to help them while protecting their self-esteem.For example, they would bring food such as eggs and bread for picnics and share them with students who brought steamed corn bread.
According to the younger Crook, because of his parents’ belief in communism, they chose to use political texts as their teaching materials, such as works once admired by Karl Marx.Understanding that the students would become diplomats representing the People’s Republic of China, his parents tried to help students gain knowledge in different fields to better prepare them for communicating with foreigners in English.
On December 15th 2018,Isabel got the award of “the Most Influential Foreigner throughout 40 Years of China’s Development” from the Chinese government. On September 17, 2019,Isabel was awarded “the Friendship Medal” by the Chinese government for her lifetime of devotion to China.

A good way to look at failure straight in the face is by writing a failure resume(简历)or CV.Like social media, there,we usually only see our friends’ “highlight part”.When we look at others’ resumes,we get scared and think how ours don’t measure up.But even the most accomplished people have plenty of failure behind them — we just don’t see it.
Stefan felt this deeply as a scientist,so she wrote a different CV which of course boasted(夸耀) about her good grades,PhD,and published papers. But the way she deals with her failure CV is a model of what we could all do.
“My CV does not reflect my great academic efforts—it does not mention the exams I failed,my unsuccessful PhD or scholarship applications,or the papers never accepted for publication.During the interviews,I talk about the one project that worked, not about the many that failed,”writes Stefan in a column for a website.
Stefan suggests keeping a draft on which you log, casually but regularly, every unsuccessful application, refused grant proposal and rejected paper.
And that’s the point:not to consider what we got wrong, but to use that information to both look at failure and realize it’s really okay, and also to use our failures for another purpose:as learning tools.
The point is to be real — with ourselves and about how the world works.Being real means taking an honest, critical, but also kind look at what we didn’t get right, and then doing our best to change what we can.Instead of focusing on how that failure makes you feel, take the time to step back and analyze the practical, operational reasons that you failed.
So,practice being okay with failure, and turning your failures into lessons learned. And yes, sometimes we have to learn those lessons more than once, letting go of what you can’t change. And keep moving forward to success.
5.What does the underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refer to
A.Plenty of failure.
B.A failure resume.
C.Highlight part.
D.Social media.
6.What did Stefan intend to tell us in paragraph 3
A.All her failures in her career.
B.Benefits she got from her failures.
C.The content of her own resume.
D.The difference between her resume and others’.
7.What does Stefan advise us to do in our careers
A.Regard failures as part of our life.
B.Keep a record of our failures.
C.Value our achievements.
D.Long for failures.
8.Which of the following best describes the author’s opinion
A.No pains,no gains.
B.All roads lead to Rome.
C.Where there is a will,there is a way.
D.Failure is the mother of success.

(2023北京市昌平区高一上学期期末英语试题)
For many parents,it is not easy to ask for information from children about what they did at school all day. 1 But other times, they keep silence or respond with a single word.It doesn’t have to be so tough. With the right strategies, even the most silent child will open up. 2
Don’t ask “How was your day ”.
This question often leads to one-word answers or a shrug. For many children, the question is too general and they don’t want to think about how to answer it with specifics.
Share your own experiences.
3 Don’t shy away from sharing your challenging experiences. It will get the conversation started and help children understand their own emotions.Labeling that you are also having a stressful experience is a good chance to show them how they might do that.
 4
Ask when your child feels disappointed, frustrated or sad, too.Asking children to share negative as well as positive emotions can help to surface problems in a more routine, less stressful way.
Avoid distractions.
Choose a time to talk when you’ll be able to listen to your child. 5 Children are less likely to reply with thoughtful answers when you’re not paying full attention.Full focus will help you ask follow-up questions, which are important to show interest.
A.Don’t rush to know everything.
B.Sometimes,kids are happy to chat.
C.Don’t expect only positive experiences.
D.Here’s how to get them to tell you about their day.
E.Put your phone down and avoid doing other chores.
F.One way is to ask children to retell what they learned in school.
G.Children may follow your lead if you share your own highlights and lowlights.

After years of observing human nature,I have decided that two qualities that make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance are curiosity and discontent.I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges(驱策力) count for much more than ambition.Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground.Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent,“Why Why Why ”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them.
“The great man,” said Mencius(孟子),“is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it.We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner,to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, and to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them,we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start Modestly,so as not to become discouraged.I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it.Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You don’t have any special ability Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You don’t have any time That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things done.Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
Whenever you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now,for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.

It happened.Breaking a world record,I won the gold.
As I stood on the podium(领奖台) that I had dreamed about my entire life,a curious question popped into my head. Why me Why did I win, given all the other incredible competitors out there The reason had to be more than a grandmother who shared a belief in her grandson’s dream. The question led me to only one answer:Because I wanted to make a difference in the world, and with all the media attention on my success,I could.

I wouldn’t have achieved any success in writing without my grandma and my husband’s encouragement.
The summer I turned 11 I spent two weeks with my grandparents. There were no other kids in the neighbourhood.I was afraid I would die of boredom.I missed my friends back in my hometown, and missed riding my bike everywhere.I even missed my brother and sister.
One afternoon Grandma was in the kitchen.“When’s Grandpa coming home ” I asked.Maybe he’d take us for a ride out.
“He’s out of town for a meeting and won’t be home till tomorrow.” She opened the door and the heat came out.
“I’m bored,” I said.“There’s nothing to do here.”
“Oh,there’s plenty to do,” she said.“You just have to use your imagination.”
Oh,I had an imagination all right. At night I’d call to Grandma from the guest room, terrified that I heard a noise in the closet or saw a face at the window.“There’s no one here but us,” Grandma would say, rubbing my back until I fell asleep.
It’s too bad that imagination deserted me in the daytime.“I can’t think of anything,” I said.
“How about a little trip ” she asked.
We walked along the brick sidewalks. We crossed the street.I saw the movie theatre. My heart began to race.I loved movies! But,no,Grandma walked right past the theatre.“Here we are,” she said, stopping in front of a store.“I thought you might like to go to Switzerland.”
“But this is a bookstore,” I said.Had the heat gone to Grandma’s head
She pushed open the glass door, nodded to the sales clerk and walked to the children’s section. Her fingers danced along the covers of the books until they came to a thick volume bound in brown cloth. She pulled it off the shelf and handed it to me.
“Here you go.It’s one ticket to the snow-covered Alps,Switzerland.”
I looked at the title.“Heidi ” I’d never heard of it.“Is it any good ”
“There’s only one way to find out. It’s about a girl who goes to stay with her grandfather (like you)!”
