To find out how effective language learning applications allow mobile users to study a new language anywhere and anytime,Shawn Loewen,a professor at Michigan State University (MSU),recently conducted a study focusing on a popular language learning app and e-learning platform first launched in 2007,to see if it really works at teaching a new language.
“Despite the fact that millions of people globally are already using language learning apps, there is a lack of published research on their effect on speaking skills,” Loewen said.“Actually there are no other studies that have researched mobile language learning apps in this way. Therefore, this study makes an important contribution to the field.”
In the study, which is published in Foreign Language Annals,85 undergraduate students at MSU used the app for 12 weeks to learn Spanish. At the beginning of the study, the students took a pretest to examine their existing oral proficiency (熟练),vocabulary and grammar in Spanish. After 12 weeks, the 54 students who completed all study requirements took the same test again to see how much knowledge they had gained.
The study showed that nearly all the students improved in their Spanish language knowledge and ability to communicate.“The result proves that using the app can advance the development of oral communication skills and not just grammar and vocabulary,as a previous study had shown,” Loewen said.
As one might expect, learning gains were related to the amount of time students used. The more time the learners spent, the more progress they made. Also,no matter how convenient and effective a language learning app may be,what might be the most important is that learners stick with it.
1.What can we know about the app mentioned in the text
A.It creates job opportunities for language learners.
B.It conducts e-learning research.
C.It offers language learning.
D.It publishes research results.
2.What does Loewen’s study focus on
A.Speaking. B.Vocabulary.
C.Reading. D.Grammar.
3.How is the study carried out
A.By studying previous studies.
B.By researching applications.
C.By completing interviews.
D.By doing experiments.
4.What is the best title for the text
A.The great importance of foreign languages
B.A study of a language learning app
C.A way to learn a language
D.The importance of learning a language

My 9-year-old son spends a lot of time on the computer surfing the Internet and sending instant messages to his friends. But I worry about him getting into trouble with strangers online. What can I do to protect him
—Brian
Simple surfing and instant messaging with friends are common activities for kids—and generally safe,if you’ve discussed some rules of use with them.Chatting with strangers, however, may be a different story.Although there’s no way to know the actual risk, the FBI (联邦调查局) warns that kids whose Internet activity isn’t monitored are most at the risk of being exploited (利用).
Keep the computer in a common room in the house rather than in your son’s bedroom.Take an interest in the sites your son is visiting and the people with whom he is chatting.Warn him never to give out his personal information (his phone number, name, address, school name, etc.),agree to meet in-person anyone he meets in a chat room,or share any photographs.
Urge your son to introduce you to any new“friends” he meets online and to tell you if he ever feels uncomfortable about conversations that take place. Most importantly, talk to him about the dangers of interacting with strangers online and remind him that people online often don’t tell the truth. The FBI also recommends that parents maintain access to young kids’ online accounts and often check their email.
Finally, you can use parental controls offered by your Internet service provider or through blocking and filtering (过滤) software.
5.How can the parents protect their children from strangers online
A.Keep the computer in their children’s bedroom.
B.Allow children to give out their personal information.
C.Encourage children to treat friends online sincerely.
D.Try to get in touch with children’s new “friends”.
6.What does the FBI suggest
A.Forbid the children to chat online.

D.Provide comfortable family environment.
7.The main purpose of the passage is to .

We walked through the forest along a path by a small river.Breathing the fresh air,we three talked and laughed all the way.
“Hey!What are you guys doing ” Someone suddenly shouted from behind.Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running.I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud.We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down.I stopped to catch my breath and asked,“Who was that ”
Mark replied,“The most annoying neighbor ever.If he catches up with us,there’s no telling what could happen. He is always making fun of us.I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes.“Wow!Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

How does big data influence our life
Today big data is one of the hottest buzzwords. 1 Such large sets of data can be collected and analyzed to uncover information that can help organizations make informed decisions. 2
Thanks to data science, some industries have benefited greatly and accordingly, many facets of our daily life have been changed.
Transport
Cities are getting bigger, busier, and more crowded.Removing road traffic completely is almost impossible. 3 For example, public agencies use data insights to map out regular routes, create alternative routes in case something goes wrong, and develop intelligent transport systems to keep the roads clear.
Entertainment
We may not realize this, but the entertainment services we use every day, such as music and video streaming apps, are largely designed on the basis of big data. 4 At a higher level, big data helps entertainment production houses predict the genre of shows that viewers from different age groups want so that they can create favored content.
Finance

Everyone who uses a smartphone unavoidably produces masses of digital data that are accessible to others, and these data provide clues to the user’s personality.Psychologists in Munich (LMU) are studying how revealing these clues are.
For most people around the world, smartphones have become an important part of their daily lives. The digital data that these devices constantly collect are a goldmine—not only for the five largest American IT companies, which make use of them for advertising purposes. They are also of considerable interest in other contexts. For instance, computational social scientists use smartphone data in order to learn more about personality and social behaviour. In a study that appears in the journal PNAS,a team of researchers led by LMU psychologist Markus Buhner set out to determine whether data collected by smartphones (such as times or frequencies of use) provide deep understanding of users’ personalities.
The LMU team organized 624 volunteers for their Phone Study project. The participants agreed to fill out an extensive questionnaire describing their personality, and to install an App that had been developed specially for the study on their phones for 30 days. The App was designed to collect coded information relating to the behaviour of the user. The automated analysis showed that the method was indeed able to successfully get most of these personality traits from their smartphone usage.
Clemens Stachl is aware that his research might further inspire the big IT firms for data.He says,“The potential of these applications—in both research and business—is very great. The opportunities opened up by today’s data-driven society will undoubtedly improve the lives of large numbers of people. But we must ensure that all sections of the population share the benefits offered by digital technologies.”
