Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theater, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups.It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theater’s 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the building’s end.
The classic film The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater.Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say goodbye to the old building.Theater owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed proper. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.
Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theater’s location (位置) was also a reason.“This used to be the center of town,” he said.“Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”
Some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were given up because of financial problems.Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theater is located.

Ever wonder how Mark Ruffalo becomes The Hulk Or how directors make Rocket and Groot look so lifelike in Avengers:Endgame These movie characters come to life through a process called motion capture (动作捕捉).Here’s what you need to know about motion capture in movies.
Motion capture,or mo-cap,is a process in which an actor’s performance is captured and then used to create a CGI character. The actions of people are recorded and this information is used to create a 3D digital model. The movements are scanned many times per second and are broadcast to the digital environment. As a result, the character reproduces the human’s movements in real time.
In the early days of the process, motion capture filming was done in special studios equipped with cameras placed throughout the room. When an actor moved, the cameras tracked the sensors on the suit and relayed(转播) the movements to a computer.Animators(动画制作者) then created the digital character from those movements and inserted the final version into the film.
Directors quickly began to adopt the technology for high profile(影响力) projects like Star Wars:Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace,The Lord of the Rings, and Avatar. Now many productions use the technique, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars saga, and the Planet of the Apes films.
Now performance capture,an updated technology of mo-cap,can even capture an actor’s facial movements and expressions. For performance capture,an actor’s face is filmed from a camera fitted onto their suit’s headpiece(头盔),dots are also placed around their face to digitally track their facial movements.
As the variety of high-quality motion capture systems available in the film industry increases, and their cost and complexity to use decreases, the technology is becoming more accessible in the near future.

One Saturday afternoon,I was watching TV in the living room with my grandpa when a blinding flash of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a deafening sound, and the pictures on TV disappeared with that sound. Before I realized what had happened,a gray-white shadow rushed in through the open window and flew over my head.Bang! It hit the wall and slid off to the floor.Shaking with fear,I approached it cautiously and saw that it was a pigeon. It looked at me in fear, trying to open its wings and struggling its feet, but apparently powerless.
So I called my grandpa and immediately set out to give it a helping hand.Taking it in my hands,I felt a few drops of warmth on my hands. It was blood!I gently spread its wings and there were a few red feathers inside.“Don’t worry. We’ll get it out alive,” Grandpa said to me.Then he got the first-aid kit. With some cotton,we dried the blood, cleaned the wound and then put it under a hairdryer to dry.All went smoothly, for the pigeon had no strength left to resist. There happened to be an empty birdcage at home,so I put it in gently and added a little water and some grains.
For the next few days, the moment I got home from school,I would run to feed the pigeon. And Grandpa helped a lot, tidying up the cage daily.Little by little, its strength returned. One evening,I fed it with the biscuit I was eating. It enjoyed it!One week later, its wound almost healed (痊愈);its feathers grew and it became brave.Whenever I sat at the table eating biscuits,it looked up at me,cooing (咕咕地叫) constantly. To my joy,I could also reach into the cage to touch it.When I gently fingered its head,it playfully pecked (啄) at me.Finally it completely recovered. But every time I was with it,it seemed restless in the cage.To make it happy and pretty,I tied an orange string (线) around its leg.

M:In West Africa and Australia, there exists an unusual tree called the baobab. It’s a strange-looking tree. Its huge trunk sometimes measures as much as ten metres in diameter. It is thicker at the bottom than at the top.The branches near the ground are very long;those near the top are very short. It may look strange, but it is extremely useful. Its leaves are good for eating. Its white flowers turn into cool, juicy fruits which taste rather like cucumbers. There are such strong fibres in the skin of the trunk that people can make rope and cloth from them. When a baobab gets old,its trunk becomes empty inside. An old tree’s empty inside space can be huge enough to hold many people. The local people even build their houses inside these trunks. When it rains, water collects in the trunk and remains cool and fresh because of such a lot of leaves and branches.

第二节
One day, however, when I returned home,Grandpa met me at the door, looking embarrassed.I asked him what had happened. He turned around and pointed to the birdcage, apologizing to me that the pigeon slid out when he was tidying up the cage and flew away through the open window.Gone!I couldn’t believe my ears.I rushed over to the birdcage.Just empty!I stared at the remaining water and grains, tears streaming down my cheeks.“Where has it gone Will it be hurt again Will it come back ...” I asked Grandpa, sobbing.“It will fly back!” he convinced me,wiping away my tears gently.
Sure enough,I saw a pigeon flying into the house the next afternoon! It perched near the birdcage, cooing.Despite great excitement,I approached it quietly. It was gray-white and had an orange string tied to one leg.My pigeon came back!“It must be hungry,” Grandpa grinned.Immediately,I fed it with grains and then tiptoed to the window and closed it,urging Grandpa to cage it.But he didn’t.“Pigeons need freedom,” he explained to me patiently.I was hesitant, but looking at the pigeon wandering and pecking at the grains peacefully,I realized Grandpa was right!I turned back to the window and opened it.模块综合测评(一)

Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times.Twelve women have won the Nobel Prize for science, one of the highest honors in the world. Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England,Mary Anning became one of the first women recognised for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth.Mary and her father collected fossils in their village on the south coast of Great Britain.Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.

Over the next 20 years,we are going to send more and better robots to Mars. Those robots will send back better pictures, maps, samples, and weather reports. There is a limit to what robots can tell us,though,so eventually we will have to send people to study the planet. Before people can visit Mars,we need to invent a spaceship that can take us there.Mars is very far away.Depending on where Mars and Earth are in their orbits (轨道) around the sun,it could take between six months to a year to get there.
The moon is much closer, and we were there,25 years ago.Over the next 10 years,we are going to work on building a new spacecraft that can go to the moon.Using this craft,we will practise the skills we need to go to Mars.
Once we get to the moon,we are going to build a station so that people can live and work on the moon for months at a time. This is important so that we have a place to start from when we want to visit Mars, but it is also important because it gives us practice with living away from Earth.
By the time you are old enough to be an astronaut,we will have people spending months on the moon.By the time you are old enough to be a commander of a space mission we will be taking trips to Mars.By the time your kids are old enough to be astronauts,we may have people living on Mars.Wouldn’t it be cool to get a postcard from someone who was building a house on Mars Wouldn’t it be cooler if it was you who sent the postcard

Terry Evanshen was one of Canadian football’s greatest receivers. He played every down (进攻) as if it was his last.Though he had made great achievements,Terry’s memories of his playing days have been completely lost.

The situation of the world’s plants is not good. One fifth of the kinds of plants are in danger of disappearing, according to a report.
“Plants are very vital to human beings,”said Kathy Willis, who led the new report.“Plants provide us with everything—food, fuel, medicine, and they are very important for our climate controlling.Without plants we would not be here.”
The good news is that deforestation rates(森林砍伐率) around the world have dropped largely since the 1950s.However,this report on the health of plants around the world shows that there is much more to be done.
The report predicts that there are now 390,900 kinds of plants. And about 21 percent of those plants are in danger of disappearing.“The good side is that we’re still discovering lots of new plants, about 2,000 each year,” said Dr Willis.“The bad side is that we’ve seen a huge change in land cover, mainly caused by cultural activity, with a little bit of climate change in there as well.”
Human activity has a great effect on the danger of plants disappearing. As humans cut down forests to make room for agriculture(农业),and towns and cities, biodiversity(生物多样性) is lost. This could not only affect our own food supply directly, but also it could affect the food web.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For many years,I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream.I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying,Mom!What did I do with my books ”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from.It was about some unfinished business in my life.As a kid,I loved everything about school.I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15,I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费).My hope of getting a diploma was dead,or so I thought.Pretty soon,I married and had three children, and I thought,“There goes my diploma.”
Even so,I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom.I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret.I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day,I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses.“That’s the answer,” I said to myself.Linda always feels better in the evening,so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said,“Mrs Schantz, why don’t you come back to school ”
I laughed,“There’s no way!I’m 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done,I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts.“This is only an experiment,” I warned him,but he just smiled. So,I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work.Anyway,my dream was still there in my heart.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
It was exciting to go to school again but
Linda and I saw each other through the time.

W:Then what
M:Well,I got back in my car and started driving towards where the strange machine had landed.
W:Perhaps you only saw the light of an airplane,or the headlights of a car coming closer.Things like that happen, you know.
M:I kept driving for about 5 minutes when suddenly,a huge animal jumped out in front of my car.
W:Oh,yeah.Then what
M:Then, the animal picked the front of my car and said “Get out of the car.I’m taking you to my master.” Something like that.
W:Wow!An animal can speak English!Come on!
M:Then, the animal opened the car door, carried me on his shoulder to this round flying machine, and well...
W:OK,that’s enough.

Linda and I saw each other through the time. When I was down,Linda encouraged me.“Mom,you can’t quit now!” And when she was down,I encouraged her.I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us.But neither of us gave up.At last,I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be the class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my dream was eventually finished.模块综合测评(二)

The United States has more tornadoes (龙卷风) than any other country in the world. In a normal year there are 800 to 1,000 tornadoes. Most happen in the middle part of the country.Tornadoes form when warm and cool air meet.In the Midwest the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico often meets the cold air from Canada.
The usual tornado season is March through May.Tornadoes form most often in the afternoon and early evening. There is often no warning of a tornado.People who live in the Midwest know the signs of tornado activity. The sky becomes dark, often a greenish colour.Dark clouds appear in the sky and there is often large hail (冰).Suddenly, there is a loud sound, like a train or a jet plane.Sometimes, two, three, five, ten or more tornadoes can form over a large area.
This type of tornado activity hit Oklahoma and Kansas in May 1999.The day was stormy, with heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon. As the storms continued, tornadoes began to form.Dozens of tornadoes hit towns and neighbourhoods in Oklahoma, then in Kansas. Some stayed on the ground for several hours, destroying everything they touched. The tornadoes killed 43 people and injured 600 others. They destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. In some areas, not one home stood. In other areas, the tornadoes destroyed every home on the left side of the street, but didn’t touch any homes on the right side. The tornadoes lifted people and cars into the air and then threw them back down to earth. So it is important to know where to hide and how to protect yourself in the face of a tornado.

For centuries, people wondered how big the earth was.Unfortunately, although the earth was flat,no one was able to figure out its size.Gradually, however, people began to realise that the earth was really round.
Then,in the third century BCE (2,300 years ago),a Greek man named Eratosthenes had an idea.Eratosthenes was sure that the earth was a sphere. He used the sun and geometry (几何学) to figure out the size of the earth .He calculated that the circumference (圆周) of the earth was 28,600 miles(46,000 kilometres). The true size of the earth is 25,000 miles (40,000 kilometres).
Eratosthenes’ measurement was wrong, but it was very close to the truth.
For many centuries after Eratosthenes lived, people made maps of the earth. However, they did not know very much about the world outside of Europe,Asia, and North Africa.Mapmakers could not draw accurate maps of the earth until people began travelling around the world in the fifteenth century, mapping small areas each time.In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, people began making correct maps of countries, but the first accurate maps of the world were not made until the 1890s.

A strange object was found in a small city called Carlos Spegazzini, just a short drive from the capital city of Buenos Aires.
When farmer Jose first found an odd scene in his farmland,he began to dig at the object. However,he quickly found himself running to tell his wife.Jose needed more support if he was going to investigate this strange thing.
Even the dog was hesitant to investigate.Unfamiliar with the object, man’s best friend was not about to jump at it with little concern. Therefore, they chose to call in somebody who has a better idea of what to do.
When the police first showed up,they were just as stumped as Jose. They knew this object was something out of the ordinary. It might even be something extraordinary,so more questions appeared.
It quickly became apparent,it was time to call in the big guys. That’s right;when you find something that appears to be out-of-this-world,it’s time to call in those who study the mysteries of the old world.
Authorities called in archaeologists who jumped at the chance to study the object. They quickly determined one thing was for certain:the ancient big one that left this behind was absolutely massive! The group was unable to move the shell,as it weighed nearly two tons!

When almost everyone has a mobile phone, why are more than half of Australian homes still paying for a landline(座机)
These days you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Australia over the age of 15 who doesn’t own a mobile phone. In fact plenty of younger kids have one in their pocket.Practically everyone can make and receive calls anywhere, anytime.
Still,55 percent of Australians have a landline phone at home and only just over a quarter (29%) rely only on their smartphones, according to a survey(调查).Of those Australians who still have a landline,a third concede that it’s not really necessary and they’re keeping it as a security blanket — 19 percent say they never use it while a further 13 percent keep it in case of emergencies.I think my home falls into that category.
More than half of Australian homes are still choosing to stick with their home phone.Age is naturally a factor(因素) — only 58 percent of Generation Ys still use landlines now and then, compared to 84 percent of Baby Boomers who’ve perhaps had the same home number for 50 years.Age isn’t the only factor; I’d say it’s also to do with the makeup of your household.
Generation Xers with young families, like my wife and I,can still find it convenient to have a home phone rather than providing a mobile phone for every family member. That said,to be honest the only people who ever ring our home phone are our Baby Boomers parents,to the point where we play a game and guess who is calling before we pick up the phone (using Caller ID would take the fun out of it).

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mom only had one eye.I hated her.She was such an embarrassment.
She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed.Once during elementary school,it was field day,and my mom came.I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me I threw her a hateful look and ran out.The next day at school,my schoolmates asked me,“Your mom only has one eye ” and laughed at me.
I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom,“Why don’t you have the other eye You’re only gonna make me a joke!” My mom trembled with shock, and said in an apologetic tone,“I’m so sorry that I only have one eye,and I was an embarrassment for you.But I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that eye. I will leave right now.Sorry!” My mom turned around and staggered away.
For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something biting at me in the corner of my heart.Even so,I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.Maybe because my mom hadn’t punished me,I didn’t think I had hurt her feelings very badly.
I told myself that I would become successful in the near future,so I studied very hard.Later I got accepted by the Seoul University.I left my mother and came to Seoul to study.I never went back to visit my mom.
Then I got married there.I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man.I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。

M:Yes.I’m planning to go to Hawaii for a week.
W:Well,I can’t have a break until the end of August.
(Text 2)
W:Alvin, are you coming to the party with me
M:I wish I could, but something unexpected has come up.
W:No wonder you look so concerned.I hope it’s nothing serious.
(Text 3)
W:Did you like photography when you were a child
M:Yes.I have been interested in it since the age of nine. For me,a holiday is always about exploration—about finding beauty and the unknown and taking photos of them.
(Text 4)
W:British food seems to have such a bad reputation.I often hear foreigners say that British food is tasteless and boring.
M:Not at all.Our tradition of slow cooking roast is second to none. And it’s also very healthy.
(Text 5)
W:Hey! You overslept again.
M:Is it morning already I stayed up really late trying to get a paper written yesterday evening. It’s due this afternoon.
(Text 6)
M:I’m back.
W:Hi,Tony.Just a moment, there were a couple of calls for you while you were out.A woman named Melissa phoned. She said she couldn’t make it to the meeting tomorrow.
M:Any other messages
W:Yeah.Someone called about the apartment in the town center. His name is Jackie, but he didn’t leave his number.

W:Yes.I try to avoid the rush hour now.I leave home before seven.
M:In Melbourne, drivers are not allowed to park cars along busy roads during rush hours to create an extra passage for traffic. This town needs better public transport. The buses don’t go to the right places. And they are always late.Last week I waited for a No.29 bus for over an hour.

M:No,not often. My work is also my hobby.I’ve been to Paris,Rome,to the Pyramids and I went sightseeing there but it was always because my work took me there. For my last trip I was in Sudan and I went looking for snakes.
W:But you must take a holiday sometimes.
M:Well, once or twice I have traveled to places not connected to snakes. For example,I spent a holiday in the Seychelles with some friends. They enjoyed the beach and the markets while I went diving with my underwater camera.
W:Is that your most important thing when you travel—your camera
M:Yes,my camera and my sleeping bag. With a sleeping bag,you can sleep anywhere you want.
W:So,do you ever stay in hotels
M:If I go with friends,I might stay at a hotel or a guesthouse, but normally I’m on my own so I rarely book a hotel in advance.I can fall asleep in a sleeping bag anytime and everywhere.
(Text 10)
I hope you’ re all enjoying your new jobs here at the college. Now I’d like to tell you a little about our staff development training programs. To begin with,we expect you to attend team meetings. These take place in the last week of each term. They will give you the chance to share experience with colleagues, discuss problems and inform us of any training requirements. If training is required, the college will pay the costs. The members of staff who attend training sessions will be asked to complete a form about their experiences and to share them with their colleagues at their next team meeting. The all-college training days take place twice a year and are held over an entire day.Members of staff can choose from kinds of events that they’d like to attend. You’ll get a lot of fresh information through them. Most importantly, our all-college training programs make sure our students get excellent service from us.Finally, each team will be given the chance to enjoy an “away day”.These are full-day events, sometimes held at a hotel or a holiday center. However, most teams like to spend the day doing activities such as ice-skating,or rock climbing,so we plan to spend the “away day” in the Forest Park this year. And the college covers all the costs for these events.

第二节
It was my mom!And still with her one eye!Reminded instantly of my dark past and embarrassment,I felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me.Overwhelmed with rage,I growled at her,“Who are you How dare you come to my house!” My mom narrowed her eye and opened her mouth but nothing came out there.Dead silence! Tears streaming down the gloomy wrinkled face, she thrust a letter into my hand, turned around and staggered away, head deep down.Heart stung by her withered back,I just cast a glance at the letter. My mom gave that eye to me! My world shattered.
Holding the letter,I cried for the person who only lived for me. How she wanted her own son to see the world clearly! But how deeply I had hurt her! Heart knotted with deep regret,I called out loudly,“Mom!” I ran after my mom, grabbed her and knelt down.“Mom,would you forgive me and accept me again ” Tears dried and a smile of forgiving stole into her cheeks. It’s never too old-fashioned to say mom’s love is the greatest in the world.
