Tu Youyou has become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize, for her work in helping to create an anti-malarial (疟疾) medicine. The 84-year-old’s route to the honour has been anything but traditional. In China, she is being called the “three nos” winner:no medical degree,no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas.
In 1967,malaria,a deadly disease at that time, spread by mosquitoes was decimating Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the jungles of northern Vietnam.A secret research unit “Mission 523” was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of “Mission 523”.
“Mission 523” read ancient books carefully for a long time to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for an anti-malarial drug, more than 240,000 compounds around the world had been tested, without any success. Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood (青蒿),which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 AD.The team took out one active compound (化合物) in wormwood, and then tested it.But nothing was effective until Tu Youyou returned to the original ancient text. After another careful reading, she changed the drug recipe one final time, heating the compound without allowing it to reach boiling point.
After the drug showed promising results in mice and monkeys,Tu Youyou volunteered to be the first human recipient (接受者) of the new drug.In any case,Tu Youyou is consistently praised for her drive and passion. One former colleague,Lianda Li,says Ms Tu is “unsociable and quite straightforward”,adding that “if she disagrees with something, she will say it”.
Another colleague,Fuming Liao, who has worked with Tu Youyou for more than 40 years, describes her as a“tough and stubborn woman”.Stubborn enough to spend decades piecing together ancient texts, she applies them to modern scientific practices. The result has saved millions of lives.

Born in a musical family in 1925 in New Orleans,Renald Richard spent his childhood filled with music. At the age of 13,he went to see a band perform at a church where he fell in love with trumpet. So,he started lessons on it,and later played it in the high school band. After high school,he was sent into military service and played his trumpet in the United States Navy Band. After ending up studying music at Xavier University of Louisiana,he played clubs on the famous Bourbon Street and also toured with many bands.
In 1954,Richard was approached by Jeff Brown, the manager of musician Ray Charles. He invited Richard to join Ray Charles’ new band.“To be selected by Ray Charles was an honor to me.Ray Charles was exacting,” said Richard.“He was a perfectionist and was rather demanding about his music.”
Renald Richard toured all over the South and West with Ray Charles.Sitting in the back seat of the car on the way to a concert,Richard wrote the song “I Got a Woman” for Charles, which became Ray Charles’ first number one radio hit.In 1954,Renald Richard left Ray Charles’ band. However,he stayed friendly with Ray Charles over the years. He became the high school’s band director in his hometown until 1962.Four years later,he moved again to New York City.Over the years,Richard has written many other songs that have been recorded by artists including Joe Turner, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley to name but a few.Living now in Southern Florida,Richard is still active at the age of 92.As you can see,Renald Richard’s musical days are by no means near an end.

Each year there are at least five million people around the world who develop serious flu (流感),and almost half a million deaths. When someone we know gets the flu virus,we expect them to be very careful not to pass it on to others.Doctors and nurses working with flu patients also need to protect themselves from the virus. But what is the best way to do this This is the question that flu expert Professor Jonathan Van-Tam at Nottingham University is trying to answer. He wants to find out how flu is transmitted,so that he can stop doctors and nurses getting sick.
Van-Tam explains their method,“There are 41 volunteers in my experiment. Some healthy volunteers are made to get flu first. When they show symptoms, other volunteers, usually called recipients (接受者),enter the house.Everyone lives together in the small space for four days. Some of the recipients wear face masks, and wash their hands every 15 minutes, but some have no protection. In this way we can study who catches the flu and which ways of transmitting flu are important.During the four days when they are in contact with the virus, and for the ten days after that, the flu recipients are checked regularly.”
The experiment is not simple and it is very expensive. It is difficult to design correctly, and it is also difficult to plan and carry out.Just one study like this takes about 18 months to organise and needs hundreds of people working on it.But Van-Tam believes it is worth because the results will help to decide what type of protection is needed for people working in hospitals with large numbers of flu patients around the world. And perhaps it could reduce the number of deaths from flu each year.

A Long Walk Home
I grew up in the south of Spain in a little community called Estepona.I was 16 when one morning,my father told me I could drive him into a remote village called Mijas, about 18 miles away,on the condition that I took the car in to be serviced at a nearby garage.Having just learned to drive and hardly ever having the opportunity to use the car,I readily accepted.I drove Dad into Mijas and promised to pick him up at 4 pm.I then drove to a nearby garage and dropped off the car.Because I had a few hours to spare,I decided to catch a couple of movies at a theater near the garage. However,I became so interested in the films that I didn’t pay any attention to the time. When the last movie had finished,I looked down at my watch. It was six o’clock.I was two hours late!
I knew Dad would be angry if he found out I’d been watching movies. He’d never let me drive again.I decided to tell him that the car needed some repairs and that they had taken longer than expected.I drove up to the place where we had planned to meet and saw Dad waiting patiently in the corner.I apologised for being late and told him that I’d come as quickly as I could, but the car had needed some major repairs.I’ll never forget the look he gave me.
“I’m disappointed that you feel you have to lie to me,Jason.”
“What do you mean I’m telling the truth.”
Dad looked at me again.“When you did not show up,I called the garage to ask if there were any problems, and they told me that you had not yet picked up the car.So you see,I know there were no problems with the car.” A feeling of guilt ran through me as I weakly confessed to my trip to the movie theater and the real reason for my being late.Dad listened attentively as a sadness passed through him.

3.D 根据第二段中的“Some of the recipients wear face masks, and wash their hands every 15 minutes, but some have no protection.”可知,这些接受者被分为两组:一组戴面罩,每十五分钟洗一次手;一组没有任何保护措施。故选D项。

A Great Gift
In memory of the great scientist Qian Xuesen,a statue of him was unveiled and a class named after him was set up in Hainan Middle School during its 95th anniversary celebration.
Qian Xuesen, who was a milestone in China’s history of science, came back to work for his motherland after finishing his further study in America. His arrival brought Chinese hope on the cause of aerospace.Being a pioneer in this field,he contributed a lot to the development of rockets and launched the first satellite for the country.
Such a great gift inspires students to learn from excellent scientists’ spirits and become a man like them.
Ⅴ.
“I’m angry, not with you but with myself. You see,I realise that I have failed as a father if after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me.I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father.I am going to walk home now and think seriously about where I have gone wrong all these years.” “But Dad,it’s 18 miles. It’s dark. You can’t walk home.”
My protests and apologies were useless.Dad began walking along the dusty road.I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind, hoping he would change his mind.I begged all the way, telling him how sorry I was,but he simply ignored me,continuing on silently, thoughtfully and painfully. For 18 miles I drove behind him,at a speed of about five miles per hour.Seeing my father in so much physical and emotional pain was the most sad experience that I had ever faced. However,it was also the most important lesson.I have never lied to him since.
