In 1947 a group of famous people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theatre in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness,Richard Burton,Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras(交响乐团).It became a fixed event every August and now attracts 400,000 people yearly.
At the same time, the “Fringe” appeared as a challenge(挑战) to the official festival.Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947,in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise(蛋黄酱) jar and tried to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter(直径).
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles(卵石) and poured them into the jar.He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles,of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar.
He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students all responded “Yes”.
“Now,” said the professor,“I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things—your family, your partner, your health, your children—things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter—like your job, your house, your car.The sand is everything else—the small stuff.”
“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued,“there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life.If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.Play with your children.Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house and give a dinner party.”
“Take care of the rocks first—the things that really matter.Set your priorities(优先权).The rest is just sand.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Baseball was always where my heart lay. However,my father did not care for baseball. Two sports he enjoyed were golfing and fishing, neither of which I considered a real sport. He didn’t talk much and he wasn’t good at expressing himself.Frankly,I wasn’t sure he cared about me.In a way,my father was like a familiar stranger I saw every day.
One day, watching the play on television made me want a glove of my own.To my surprise,my father said he wanted one, too. We bought two gloves, and that evening,he suggested we go out to the courtyard and throw the ball around.I’d already practiced catching and throwing at school, but I could tell this was the first time for my father, because every time he caught the ball,it landed directly in his palm.If you’ve ever caught a ball with a baseball glove, you know how much this hurts.
But my father caught ball after ball this way.Slap! Slap! He winced(龇牙咧嘴).After about five minutes,I told him I’d had enough. It wasn’t out of mercy, but for my own self-interest.Neighborhood kids were watching and would no doubt laugh at me later for having an old man who didn’t know how to properly catch a baseball. When my father took the glove off,his palm was red and swollen.
Dad,who passed away 11 years ago, never told me he loved me.But that sound of the baseball landing in the soft flesh of his hand, over and over again — spoke its own tender language, though at the time, all I felt was shame.

Every American family has its own traditions on Thanksgiving Day,and mine is no different.Once the national holiday arrives,my mom rises early to make the meal. She puts a turkey in the oven, chops carrots and bakes pies.I’m sorry to say that the men in the family—my dad,my younger brother and I myself—rarely pitch in to help. Our job is to wash the mountain of dirty dishes after the meal is over.
Around 2 pm every Thanksgiving Day,family members seat themselves around the kitchen table.Plates of turkey, vegetables, salad, rolls and pies cover it.At this point,we can hardly keep ourselves from drooling(流口水) all over our fancy clothes, but it’s not yet time to eat.
First,we must bow our heads, close our eyes and say a prayer of thanks aloud to God for giving us everything we have.Under normal circumstances,I would have no problem making a list of things I am thankful for.I grew up in a loving family. My parents, who aren’t wealthy, took out loans to help me pay for the university.
However, the funny thing is,every time I sit down for Thanksgiving dinner and try to say a prayer of thanks,my mind usually goes blank.I think it has something to do with my growling (咕咕叫) stomach and all of that food sitting right there under my nose.
Eventually, though,we all finish our short prayers and dig in.To be sure, the day includes other highlights—visiting with family and watching football. But usually around 6 pm we are all ourselves stuffed like turkeys and thankful to have a nice warm bed to sleep in.

The door opens and you are amazed at seeing people jumping and flying around like superheroes.Calm down, you are not in a film, just a trampoline(蹦床) park.
In recent years trampolining has become a new craze among Chinese youths.Short videos are regularly uploaded to social media showing people’s excitement about jumping back and forth on the colourful trampolines. Most videos feature teenagers. 1
Ms Shi,a 28-year-old from Beijing, goes to trampoline parks almost every weekend. She said,“When I was a child,I loved bouncing up and down on the trampolines, though they were small and simple ones. They made me feel free and happy. 2 ”
It’s true that today’s trampoline parks are bigger, more professional and more creative. 3 You can jump, play in the inflatables(充气垫),or shoot basketballs. Also,if you’re brave enough, you can learn to walk on the wall.
“Trampolining is so much fun.It doesn’t feel like exercising at all,” Ms Shi said. 4 According to Robert Smith,a British sports therapist,“The trampoline pad is bouncy and absorbs a large amount of the impact of your landing,so your bones and joints are protected and strengthened at the same time.”
Unlike playing soccer, basketball, tennis or any other competitive sports, the risk of injury while trampolining is relatively low. 5 “You must do warm-up exercises before playing. And you can’t lose concentration during the movements,” Peter Cheng,a trampoline fan who also owns a trampoline park, warned.
While outdoor activities are largely up to the weather, the indoor trampoline parks are good places to go whenever you are seeking a fun cardio workout

根据第一段中的“However,my father did not care for baseball.” 故选A项。
根据第一段中的“However,my father did not care for baseball. Two sports he enjoyed were golfing and fishing, neither of which I considered a real sport. He didn’t talk much and he wasn’t good at expressing himself.”可知,父亲不喜欢棒球,而且是个不善言辞的人;第二段中的“One day, watching the play on television made me want a glove of my own.To my surprise,my father said he wanted one,too.”可知,父亲知道作者想要一副棒球手套后,就说自己也想要一副,而且下文“...that evening,he suggested we go out to the courtyard and throw the ball around”中提到父亲甘愿当作者的陪练,因此推断父亲想要一副棒球手套是想让作者开心,故选A项。
根据第三段中的“After about five minutes,I told him I’d had enough. It wasn’t out of mercy, but for my own self-interest.Neighborhood kids were watching and would no doubt laugh at me later for having an old man who didn’t know how to properly catch a baseball. When my father took the glove off,his palm was red and swollen.”
文章前四段描述作者一家人准备感恩节大餐,最后一段中的“Eventually, though,we all finish our short prayers and dig in.”说明一家人终于开吃了,首先排除C项;再由最后一段中的“To be sure, the day includes other highlights—visiting with family and watching football.”
根据第四段中的“I think it has something to do with my growling stomach and all of that food sitting right there under my nose.”

3.C 由前文“It’s true that today’s trampoline parks are bigger, more professional and more creative.”以及后文“You can jump...you can learn to walk on the wall.”
4.F 由后文“According to Robert Smith,a British sports therapist,‘The trampoline pad is...so your bones and joints are protected and strengthened at the same time.’”
5.D 由后文“You must do warm-up exercises before playing. And you can’t lose concentration during the movements”可知,下文在讲蹦床运动的热身准备和安全注意事项,D项“然而,准备和安全永远都是第一位的。”
