One afternoon, finally, a postcard from the United States arrived in our letterbox. The simple postcard from America to our sleepy little seaside town in Australia was to me a beacon of light. I held it tight in my hands, read and re-read the words scrawled across the back: Nanny Del, thinking of you in Michigan, USA... From that day, our letterbox became the destination for postcards from all over the world. Our letterbox became a hotel, accommodating travel-weary cards from everywhere: India, Italy, China, and Japan. The cards were love and from all corners of the globe. I sat next to my Nanny, reading the cards to her. Tears of happiness mixed with grief fell onto those postcards.
In the months that followed, her living room became a departure hall and our flights departed daily. Her hospital bed became an airport lounge, where we researched and planned our next departure. We visited Milan and cruised the Japanese Sca before hopping over to Taiwan. We travelled the entirety of the United States. Nanny hung out for every visit from the postman, eagerly awaiting news of her next departure.” I just can’t believe strangers did this for a little old lady they’ve never met” became a sentiment she murmured many times. I reached out to the senders; reminding them that they’d impacted strangers in a way they’d perhaps never know. Our travels took us far and wide. Cancer could not stop us.

Everyone was sad when they left Pinky at the pond, even Sara’s father. But he tried to convince Sara that Pinky was fine. Walking towards the car, Sara looked over her shoulder and saw Pinky standing alone. The other ducks were swimming around in circles, looking at Pinky. To Sara, it seemed that they were trying to identify the strange animal. They didn’t recognize Pinky as a duck. Worried about Pinky, Sara dreamed of Pinky being bullied by other ducks the whole night.
The next morning, when looking out of the kitchen window, Sara couldn’t believe her eyes! There was Pinky, happily walking around on the grass. Thrilled at what she saw, she kept asking herself,” How did she make it ” After all, it was two miles away and he managed to walk back through the city street. Incredible! But her parents drove Pinky back to the pond again regardless of her request. The following morning, there was Pinky again on the grass! Seeing Pinky again, her father, waving his arms about wildly, moved his lips without saying anything. Meanwhile, Sarah, overjoyed, hugged Pinky tightly, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Without hesitating, Nick ran back inside again. By now, the whole house was in flames. Black smoke was gathering at the ceiling, then pouring down like a monster licking his skin. Upstairs went Nick. He searched under the bed, in the closet and other upstairs bedrooms, but no kid. Sweat forming on his forehead, he choked on smoke, worried and helpless. It was then that he heard the crying from a dark corner. Ears alert, he managed to move towards the sound. In front of him was the little girl, huddling in the dark. With the flames inching closer, Nick quickly lifted the girl into his arms, stumbled down the stairs and into the blackness, throwing himself through the front door.
Outside, the firefighters had arrived. “2-year-old girl and a man, possibly inside.” A firefighter called out as they rushed to put on their equipment. Just then, Nick came stumbling out from the house, Sally in his arms. He handed over the girl, collapsed on the sidewalk and gasped for air. He had only one thing on his mind: “Is the baby ok ” Fortunately, the girl was uninjured apart from a cut on her arm. Nick was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for first-degree burns to his ankle, leg and arm. Walters visited him and thanked him for rescuing their daughters. Outside the hospital, the story of Nick was already spreading. He was a HERO who had run into a burning building not once, but twice. Nick felt like a different person now with a clear purpose, his wife keeping him company. No quarrels!

Then the two-hundred-milestone breaststroke was announced. I could feel my heart was beating faster and faster. As the signal was released, I jumped into the water and swam with my whole strength. Without second thoughts in my mind, I was absorbed in this as if this was the only thing I need to do in the world. Morgan’s encouraging words appeared and I started to believe in myself.
There was only 50 meters to go. I seemed almost to be reaching my limit. I even could feel a cramp in my calf. Although there were the mental and physical discomfort, I was determined to finish the race. I didn’t want to let my coach and Morgan down. Finally, I came to the finish line. I felt both tired and a sense of achievement. To my surprise, I won the second prize.

But when she returned to the house after the funeral, the twinkling Christmas lights brought her a spark of joy. The lights were a sign of hope and resilience, a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is still beauty and brightness to be found. Sara realized that her father’s tradition of putting up Christmas lights wasn’t just about making their own home festive, it was about spreading that joy and hope to others as well.
In the following days, more and more Christmas lights were reappearing on neighbors’ houses. And soon the whole street was aglow with colorful lights and decorations. Every evening, families would take walks around the neighborhood, admiring the festive displays and feeling a sense of community and togetherness. The Pascucci family’s tradition had taken on a life of its own, becoming a symbol of resilience and hope in the face of difficult times. And as the years went on, the lights continued to shine brightly, bringing joy and comfort to all who saw them.

Then one day, as I was sitting at the bar having an after-dinner drink, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Stunned by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sent my grandma a piano a long time ago ” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain. And I suddenly remembered. My goodness, it was her, the little barefoot girl. I wanted to know more about the girl.
She told me her name was Elise and since her grandmother couldn’t afford to pay for lessons, she had learned to play by listening to the radio. After practicing hard, she could play many songs. Then, she was admitted to a music school where she was offered a scholarship. She expressed her deep gratitude to me. She said, “ If you hadn’t given me this piano, I wouldn’t be where I am right now.” I felt proud of her and also told that it was her grandma’s persistence and love that made her achieve her dream.

Then suddenly it was kids’ turn to make the last tier. Tightly gripping the clothing of those we were climbing over, we passed the first two tiers without difficulty. By the time I reached the fourth tier, nerves made my hands sweat and my knees tremble, for I was very high off the ground. As I climbed onto my mother’s shoulders, my foot slipped off and I slid down. Instinctively, I clutched Mom’s arm with all my might. Feeling the tower below swaying a bit, my heart began a crazy dance in my chest. “Stay focus!” Exclaimed a kid beside me. Sweat trickling down my face, I took a deep breath to calm myself. I could not be responsible for ruining our tower. I could not disgrace my parents or myself. I could not let my team down.
“Jordi. Easy!” My mother whispered the words. I calmed my heart and again placed my foot on Mom’s lap. This time, I grasped her shirt and firmly pushed myself to a stand, balancing on one foot. With the other foot, I stepped up and onto her shoulders, and then brought the other foot up. Reaching deep inside to feel my balance, with focus and trust, I rose slowly out of my crouch and straightened my knees. I worked hard to hold myself straight and still until our tower was complete. Whether or not we won this competition, I knew we had done what we had set out to do. With faith in each other and with focus on the task, we built our tower. Eventually, I became a casteller!

It was exciting to go to school again, but also tough. At first, I felt really embarrassed to be sitting in a classroom with all the kids staring at me, even though I knew they were only doing it out of curiosity. However, the first few months of going back to studying were undoubtedly challenging, for I had totally forgotten what I had learned in my younger days. Fortunately, the attitude of the teachers calmed my nerves. They didn’t say much but they behaved with great understanding. Also, as a mother of three children, I had to balance loads of housework and my kids’ needs while doing my courses.
Linda and I helped each other through. Linda would share the housework when I was up to my eyebrows with my schoolwork. And when she was down, I would stay by her side, offering comfort and encouragement. I have to say, it was a hard time for both of us but we didn’t give up. Finally, I completed all the credits needed for graduation. I glowed with pride as I was presented with my diploma. Waving my hands at Linda, I could hardly contain my excitement. At last, the unfinished business in my dreams had been finished.1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Postcards From The World
While the sun washed over the grass of my grandmother’s front garden, I sunk into the familiarity of one of her armchairs. Life, as I knew it, had changed. My beloved grandmother, my nanny, a stand-in parent in the absence of my father, had cancer. It was terminal, and could never be cured.
As she watched Getaway on television, she remarked to me that she’d never left Australia and that now she never would. I swallowed the sadness that came with knowing that chapters of her life were to be left unwritten.
At work, feeling helpless, I wiped tables and took orders and thought. HARD! The Saturday afternoon lunch rush was not enough to lull me from my thoughts. Wracked with grief, I pondered the power of Facebook and the collective strength of human empathy. I raced from the end of my shift to ask strangers on the internet for help.
“My Nanny Del has cancer. It’s terminal and she will never see the world. Please send her postcards so she can see the world from her armchair. I can offer nothing but gratitude.”
I resolved not to breathe a word of this; should nothing come, I couldn’t bear to carry her disappointment along with my own. Should something wander into our humble little letterbox, I would consider it a blessing and embrace it like I embraced her little, shrinking frame.
Days turned to weeks and Nanny’s health worsened rapidly in the early months of 2018. Life took me through my full-time study, babysitting and waiting tables, along with the responsibility of caring for a grandparent who was too sick to care for herself. As I helped Nanny in the early hours of those mornings, she would chat to me, sometimes joys, other times, sorrows. Whatever she shared became precious.

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling in a yellow basket.
“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.
Sara’s mother really didn’t think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.
“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.
But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara’s Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.
Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara’s parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.
The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

Nick had a difficult childhood, with neither mom nor dad giving him love because his parents died when he was ten. Now he was 27 years old. He had no friends around. As for his work, delivering newspapers couldn’t support his family. He had a wife, Kara Lewis, but he did not know exactly how to get along with her. His life was in a mess and he couldn’t see his future.
That night, Nick had a quarrel with his wife and he’d stormed out of their apartment, leaving his phone behind so she couldn’t contact him. Then he drove the car and smoked in the parking lot; he liked to go there when he needed to be alone. Looking up at the stars, he sat in silence for 15 minutes or so. Then he decided to head home.
He was on the way back to the apartment just after the midnight when he saw the house on fire. Flames were climbing up the front porch, lapping at the home’s walls. Hurrying out of the vehicle, he immediately regretted not having his phone. “Hey, help, the house is on fire!” he yelled into the night. Nobody responded. He ran around to the back door. To his amazement, it swung open. Without thinking about the danger, Nick dashed into the burning building.
It was a two-story house where Walter family lived with two daughters,18-year-old Kay and 2-year-old Sally. That night the parents were not at home, with their 18-year-old daughter taking care of Sally.
The curtains were melting as Nick ran through the hallway of the burning house, peering into rooms that were in flames and searching to see if anyone was home. Just then, one face emerged from a room at the top of the stairs and peered down at him, her eyes wide. “Your house is on fire. You need to go!” Nick yelled, hurrying her out of the house. After they were out into the fresh air, Nick heard the girl kept screaming, “There’s a baby in there! I couldn’t find her in the bedroom.”

Oh no. Coach Cafferty just said my name. For that event. The two-hundred-metre breaststroke (蛙泳) for the coming meet! Not the backstroke (仰泳) I had wished and practiced for so long!
Beads of sweat popped out over my upper lip. Morgan pressed her elbow into my side, trying to offer me moral support. But it didn’t help. My stomach sank to my knees like a brick in water. Morgan tried to convince me it would be fine. “Maybe Coach has more confidence in you than you think. Or maybe Coach Cafferty just want to give the rest a laugh when I sink to the bottom of the pool,” I thought desperately. I walked towards Coach Cafferty and told her about my inability and my desire to quit this event. She frowned and asked if it was what I really wanted.
I hesitated. Placing her hand on my shoulder, she started smiling and encouraged me to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
The first practice was a disaster. I lost rhythm on my strokes. I messed up my turns. I even had to stop and catch my breath a few times. I felt everyone was laughing at me and my stomach twisted. How could I make it within just two weeks But once I dragged myself out of the water, exhausted and frustrated, Coach Cafferty thumbed up to me, saying I did really well and just needed more confidence in myself and more time to practice.
On the way back home, Morgan comforted me, “Dear, just ignore others. Race against yourself. Count your own strokes. Prove to yourself that you can do it.” With these words said to me almost every day, before or after each practice, something gradually changed: both how I swam the breaststroke and how I felt about the event as well as myself.
The meet finally came. I arrived at the pool hall, still a little bit worried. As each event clicked closer to mine, my knees shook. I bit my lip and looked out over the other swimmers. Morgan leaned forward. “Just swim your race. Remember, you can!”

Up in Lights
For some, putting up Christmas lights is a holiday chore. But for the Pascucci family, it was always a big day of celebration.
Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, Sara’s father, Anthony Pascucci, 60, woke up excited to string lights and decorate the lawn of his home and didn’t take them down until February, being the only house with Christmas decorations in the community. Anthony Pascucci believed the brightness of the lights could counter (抵消) some of the darkness of the past year with COVID-19.
In 2020, as in every other year, Anthony Pascucci strung colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if sparkles were dripping onto the hallway. Sara’s brother, Anthony Jr. helped with the wiring, while Sara hung ornaments (装饰物) on the tree inside the house playing the song “White Christmas” over and over to keep everyone in the spirit. The whole place looked like a scene from a pop-up Christmas storybook.
On Christmas Eve, the whole house twinkled with lights and gifts were piled under the tree. Everyone was looking forward to overly stuffed clams-a typical Italian feast. But most of all, they looked forward to enjoying another Christmas together as a family.
However, Sara received a call from her colleague who had tested positive for COVID-19. Though Sara didn’t have any symptoms she decided to get tested right away, as well as the whole family. When their results came back they all learned that they also had COVID-19. Several weeks later on early February, Anthony Pascucci passed away after getting lung infections.
In addition to helping to plan the funeral for her father, Sara had to tackle a seemingly endless list of difficult to-dos. It was almost too much to bear.

Many years ago, when I was a young man in my twenties, I worked as a salesman for a St. Louis piano company. Every time we would advertise in Southeast Missouri, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” The old lady scrawled on and on and on that postcard until she filled it up.
Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to look the old lady up: The old lady lived in a small and dirty house in the middle of a cotton field. There were chickens in the house. Obviously, the old lady could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. However, she still sent us the same postcard every six weeks.
A couple of years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored them.
But then, one day, despite knowing that I was about to make a terrible business decision, I delivered the piano to the old lady and told her I would carry the contract myself at $10 a month with no interest, and that would mean 52 payments. I took the new piano in the house and placed it where I thought the roof would be least likely to rain on it. It old her and the little girl to try to keep the chickens off of it, and I left — sure I had just thrown away a new piano.
But the payments came in, all 52 of them as agreed — sometimes with coins taped to a 3×5inch card in the envelope. It was incredible!
So, I put the incident out of my mind for 20 years.

“Jordi! Wake up!” Father’s voice called from the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a castellar—a tower builder. Mama had breakfast ready. “Are you prepared for your moment of fame ” Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry, and the bread got stuck as I swallowed. Taking a big swig of juice, I put on a smile. “I'm ready” I would do well. I wanted to make him proud.
Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that, I’d watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell. I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year, I had been practicing the climb. I was twelve, and I must not be a coward (胆小鬼). So for the first time in a competition, I would help build the tower!
In town, I saw that the center was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country. Hands sweating, I was waiting for our turn to compete. Mom came and patted me on the shoulder. “Have focus. Have faith.” I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.
Soon, too soon, it was our turn.
My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to each other’s arms. Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.
Our base was solid. Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other’s arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier (层). Another group of men would form the third tier. Then, a group of women, including Mom, started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

A Dream Come True
For many years, I kept having the same dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
Deep inside, I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all, I longed to someday march down the hallway to receive my diploma(毕业文凭).That seemed more appealing even than getting married. But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought.Years later, I married and had three children, and I thought,“There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis(幼年型关节炎)in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her going back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad. in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,”I said to myself.Linda always feels better in the evening, so we went there to just sign her up for night school. Linda was busy filling out register forms-when the secretary knowing me well said, “Mrs.Schantz, why don’t you come back to school ”
I laughed ,“There’s no way. I’m 55.” But he insisted, and before I knew it, I was enrolled for classes in English and art.“This is only an experiment,”I warned the secretary, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.
