五、阅读理解
A
When your pet has an emergency, first aid is not a substitute for veterinary(兽医的) treatment. However, before you are able to get your pet to a veterinarian, knowing some basic first aid can help.
Bite Wounds
Approach the pet carefully to avoid getting bitten. Wear a mask for the animal and then check the wound. Clean the wound with large amounts of saline(盐水). If these are not available, then regular water may be used. Wrap large open wounds to keep them clean.
Bleeding
Apply firm, direct pressure over the bleeding area until the bleeding stops. Hold the pressure for at least 10 minutes. Avoid bandages that cut off circulation.
Breathing Stops
Check to see if the animal is choking(窒息) on a foreign object. If an animal is not breathing, place it on a firm surface with its left side up. Check for a heartbeat. If you hear a heartbeat but not breathing, close the animal's mouth and breathe directly into its nose—not the mouth—until the chest expands. Repeat 12 to 15 times per minute.
Burns
Wash the burn immediately with large amounts of cool, running water. Apply an ice pack for 15-20 minutes. Do not place an ice pack directly on the skin. Wrap the pack in a light towel or other cover. If the animal has large quantities of dry chemicals on its skin, brush them off. Water may activate some dry chemicals.
Fractures(骨折)
Symptoms include pain, inability to use a limb(腿). Wear a mask for the pet and look for bleeding. If you can control bleeding without causing more injury, then do so. Watch for signs of shock. Don't try to set the fractures by pulling the limb. Transport the pet to the veterinarian immediately, supporting the injured part as best as you can.

Saving a drowning woman is all in a day’s work for two boys who had already collected their swimming and lifesaving merit badges (奖章).
A June heavy storm hit Columbia in Missouri with little warning, causing floodwaters from rivers to burst their banks and overflow zones to turn into ponds.
When 15-year-old Dominic Viet and 16-year-old Joseph Diener passed a basketball court that had turned into a pool, they heard the frantic shouting of a young woman desperately trying to keep her head above water under the force of a current (水流). The boys had seen the woman swimming with a friend there before, but it was now obvious that she was drowning.
“The first thing that came into my mind was to get into the water,” Dominic recalled. “We didn’t have time to think. Her head was barely above the water and we could see her sinking more down every second. We didn’t think about the risks. We had to get her out.”
Heroes will do as heroes do, and pulling her up onto their shoulders, Dominic and Joseph got her ashore, where emergency services arriving at someone else’s call performed first aid and rushed her to the hospital.
The fire department honored the two boys with a “Citizen Life Safety Award”. Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Jenkins described the boys’ act as heroic and courageous. He added, “Floodwaters are no conditions to be swimming in. There can be waste water runoff, loose chemicals, downed power lines charging the current with electricity, or pieces of wood, metal, or brick, etc.”

How to protect your hearing
All sounds that are louder than 85 decibels(分贝) — from industrial machines to heavy traffic and loud music — are a threat to your hearing, especially if your exposure is long or repeated. That’s because loud sounds can injure or destroy hair cells in your inner ear that are involved in sending sound signals to your brain.
____13____ . Since most of us don’t carry decibel meters around, you can rely instead on this rule of thumb: if you are required to raise your voice to be heard by someone standing an arm’s length away then there’s potential for harm. Ideally, you can reduce the noise, go to a quieter environment or wear protection such as earplugs.
____14____ . Many smartphones can produce sounds of 100 decibels or more. Some will warn you when you exceed safe levels. If yours doesn’t, keep it set to less than the maximum volume.
Deafeningly loud noise is not to blame for all hearing loss, though. ____15____. In addition, the inner ear can also become worse as you get older, and unfortunately, there’s no real way to prevent this.
If you suspect you’ve lost some hearing, see a GP or audiologist. ____16____, particularly when it’s a question of picking up people’s speech.
The technology itself “can take a while to get used to because your brain needs to readjust,” says audiologist Dr. Gemma Twitchen. “____17____ , when you first notice it reducing.” Hearing aids are improving in terms of comfort, sound quality and appearance — there are now tiny, barely noticeable models available.
A.As the condition affects each sufferer differently
B.A hearing aid could improve your abilities noticeably
C.The louder the noise, the more likely it will cause damage
D.Occasionally, the root of the problem can be a cracked eardrum
E.They could ease it by giving your brain external sounds to focus on
F.Listening to music through earphones is a common cause of hearing loss
G.It’s much easier if you take action on getting your hearing assessed early on

A Midnight Rescue
It was not uncommon to carry out tasks at night as rescuers. Harry and David were informed of their task when it was nearly midnight. It was urgent so there was no time to hesitate. They headed into the forest.
The forest was black and silent. A little way into it they reached a fork in the earth path. Harry and David took the left path. They walked in silence, their eyes on the ground, watching out for the traps like big pits(坑)set by the illegal hunters. Every now and then a ray of moonlight through the branches above lit a spot of scarlet(猩红的)blood on the fallen leaves.
David saw that Harry looked very worried, asking, "Could Unicorn be hurt that badly " Harry answered, "If we can't find it as soon as possible, it doesn't stand much chance to survive." Of course, Unicorn was not the animal in fairy tales but the nickname of a 3-year-old elephant, the last wild elephant in this forest. The nickname was given by the biodiversity rescuers who were protecting every member in this forest. They knew Unicorn was obedient and not afraid of human beings and that sometimes put it in danger. "Without it, the forest was not complete. Those illegal hunters should be thrown into prison." Harry thought, carrying his first aid kit(急救箱)on his back and walking forward with his flashlight.
It seemed that thick fog would come at any time, which would increase the danger. Harry hurried into the heart of the forest with David. They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper. There were blood splashes(血迹)on the roots of a tree, as though the poor creature had been struggling around in pain close by. "We must hurry up", said Harry.

However, it was really not easy for them to find it. That’s because thick fog came, covering almost everything. They had to bend down to search for clues like blood splashes or footprints, which made them walk more slowly, ears sharper than usual. Suddenly, painful roars came to the rescuers and in front of them lay the young elephant. “Look! Unicorn!” Harry rushed forward, crying excitedly. It looked exhausted because a wound on its left front leg was bleeding badly.
Without delay, Harry knelt down to do first aid on its wound with David holding the flashlight. Fortunately, everything needed was available in the first aid kit. Calmly and skillfully, Harry conducted an operation on Unicorn immediately, and it seemed more obedient than before. Therefore, it didn’t take much time for Harry to stop the bleeding as an experienced rescuer. And after a while, Unicorn was able to stand up and walked away. It was rescued! Waving goodbye to it, Harry and David felt relieved. At this moment, the whole forest woke up, the moonlight fading while winds singing welcome to the dawn.
