Flash droughts (突发性干旱) develop fast, and when they hit at the wrong time, they can ruin a region’s agriculture. They are also becoming increasingly common as the planet warms. In a study published in the journal Communication Earth &Environment, we found that the risk of flash droughts, which can develop in a few weeks, is on pace to rise in every major agricultural region around the world in the coming decades.
In North America and Europe, cropland that had a 32% annual chance of a flash drought a few years ago could have a greater chance of a flash drought by the final decades of this century. That result would put food production, energy, and water supplies under increasing pressure. The cost of ravage will also rise. A flash drought in the Dakotas and Montana in 2017 caused $2.6 billion in agricultural damage in America alone.
All droughts begin when rainfall stops. What’s interesting about flash droughts is how fast they reinforce themselves, with some help from the warming climate. When the weather is hot and dry, soil loses water rapidly. Dry air extracts moisture from the land, and rising temperature can increase this evaporative demand. The lack of rain during a flash drought can further contribute to the feedback processes. Under these conditions, crops and vegetation begin to die much more quickly than they do during typical long-term droughts.
In our study, we used climate models and data from the past 170 years to assess the drought risks ahead under three conditions for how quickly the world takes action to slow the pace of global warming. If greenhouse gas emissions (排放物) from vehicles, power plants, and other human sources continue at a high rate, we found that cropland in much of North America and Europe would have a 53% annual chance of flash droughts, respectively, by the final decades of this century. Globally, the largest projected increases in flash droughts would be in Europe and the Amazon. Slowing emissions can reduce the risk significantly, but we found flash droughts would still increase by about 6% worldwide under low-emission conditions.
8 Why is the flash drought a concern
A. It often develops and strikes unexpectedly. B. It does go hand in hand with rainfall.
C. It can be destructive to regional agriculture. D. Its chance has increased dramatically.
9. What does the underlined word “ravage” mean in paragraph 2
A. Control. B. Assessment. C. Production. D. Damage.
10. Which of the following is a direct contributor to flash droughts
A. The constant rainfall. B. The increasing food demand.
C. The warming planet. D. The fast pace of modern life.
11. What can be done to reduce the drought risks according to the last paragraph
A. To cut down on carbon footprint. B. To evaluate the risks regularly.
C. To study climate models and data. D. To monitor weather condition.

Scientists at the University of Massachusetts have invented a new way to produce electricity. Their method uses super-tiny holes to make electricity from moisture (水分) in the air. The scientists hope the method will one day lead to cheap, clean electricity anywhere at any time.
Moisture in the air is what helps create electricity. Water droplets in the air carry an electric charge. In clouds, these water droplets build up large charges, which we later see as lightning. One of the researchers, Jun Yao, described the new invention as a “small-scale, man-made cloud”. Since the new device generates electricity from the air, the scientists call it “Air-gen”.
Currently, the device only makes a small amount of electricity—enough to power a small sensor. But in the lab tests, the Air-gen, which is a little bigger than a fingernail, produced that electricity all day and all night for a week, powered by nothing but the air.
The scientists have tried to make electricity from humidity (湿度) before, but those methods didn’t work for long, or were expensive to make. But in 2020, Dr Yao and his team found a way of getting electricity from humidity using special “nanowires” made from bacteria (细菌). In time, that research led the scientists to the key discovery of the Air-gen: almost any material can create electricity in this way as long as it has nanopores(纳米孔)of the right size. This is important because it means in the future, the devices can be made very cheaply. The researchers are hopeful that the Air-gen will become an important green energy source.
Many scientists are impressed with the idea behind the Air-gen. But some have suggested that it might be hard for the Air-gen to create enough electricity to really make a difference—especially compared to power sources like solar energy. But Dr Yao and his team are working on ways to make the Air-gen technology more powerful. Because the device is so thin, the scientists believe that many Air-gen layers (层) could be stacked (堆放) on top of each other to create more electricity without taking up more space.
12. Why can moisture in the air be used to produce electricity
A. It varies in state. B. It carries charge.
C. It has tiny holes. D. It traps lightning.
13. What is the current disadvantage of the Air-gen
A. The insufficient amount of electricity. B. The small size of the devices.
C. Its inability to work at low expenses. D. The lack of alternative material.
14. What is Dr Yao and his team’s attitude to the Air-gen technology
A. Uncertain. B. Optimistic. C. Disapproving. D. Critical.
15. What is the most suitable title for the passage
A. Will the Air-gen take off in time B. Creating electricity from the air
C. Is air going to be a money-maker D. Inventing green devices for air

Turtles Crossing
One spring afternoon, Alex rode his bike along the country road leading to his house. As he rounded a bend, a sign came into his view—Johnson’s pond. His dad took him canoeing (皮划艇) there sometimes. Alex loved it. Now it was spring time and the pond was always so alive. There, he could find frogs croaking, dragonflies hunting and turtles basking (晒太阳) on sunny rocks.
Alex was curious about the turtles he saw. Days earlier, he had gone to the library to check out books on turtles. Alex learned that turtles don’t have warm blood like people do. That’s why they have to sit in the sun to warm themselves. He also learned that in spring turtles lay eggs on the land away from the water.
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. As Alex watched, the rock started to move. When he rode his bike up to get a closer look, he saw that it wasn’t a rock at all. It was a large turtle creeping (爬) its way across the road. It had a bony, beak-shaped mouth and a long, jagged tail. Alex suddenly realized what she was going to do.
He also knew not to get too close. He had read that a turtle has a powerful bite even though it doesn’t have teeth. It could even bite off someone’s finger. He stood at a distance and watched.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up to move it safely to the grass. What could he do Thinking fast, he started jumping up and down and waving both hands wildly. ”Stop! Stop!“ he cried. The car slowed to a stop, and the driver stuck her head out of the window. It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos.

8. Why is the flash drought a concern

Ramos.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Para 1:
“Are you alright, Alex ” asked Mrs. Ramos. Alex quickly pointed to the turtle still creeping across the road. “Look, it’s a turtle! She’s trying to get to the other side, but she’s in danger.” Mrs. Ramos smiled and nodded. “Oh, I see. We need to help her, don’t we ” Alex nodded eagerly. “Yes, but we can’t just pick her up. She might bite us.” Together, they brainstormed ideas to safely escort the turtle to the grass on the other side of the road.
Para 2:
Suddenly Alex got an idea how to protect them from car danger. He ran home quickly, grabbed a large cardboard box, and returned with it. Carefully, they positioned the box in front of the turtle, guiding her into it. Once she was safely inside, Alex and Mrs. Ramos carried the box to the grassy area, where they gently let her out. The turtle seemed to understand their intentions and slowly made her way into the grass. Alex and Mrs. Ramos watched her disappear into the greenery, relieved that they had saved her from harm. They smiled at each other, knowing they had done a good thing for the turtle and the environment.
