To improve your reading, you can try the form of readers’ theatre, a formatted script for readers to read aloud. It’s so interesting!
Cast of Characters: Narrator, Kayla, Ms. Lee, Zack
Narrator: On a sunny day in southern Texas, Ms. Lee’s students gathered in the school playground.
Ms. Lee: Tomorrow is the day of the sidewalk(人行道)chalk-art festival. The principal has allowed us to practise our wet-chalk drawing on the playground sidewalk, which will be our studio. Remember, whenever you want to draw on a sidewalk, always ask an adult in charge for permission before you draw. Now let’s review the steps of wet-chalk drawing. What do we do first
Narrator: As the students told her the steps in order, Ms. Lee wrote them on a large pad of paper. When she finished writing, she pulled the paper off the pad and displayed the directions so everyone could read them. Then the students chose and soaked (浸湿)their pieces of chalk. Meanwhile, Kayla and Zack planned their drawing.
Kayla: Let’s draw a jungle feast. Parrots can be eating all kinds of fruit.
Zack: I’ll draw a model train carrying food to the birds.
Narrator: The students removed their pieces of chalk from the water and drew. As Zack drew a sweeping curve of train track, his hand knocked over the jar of water. He and Kayla watched water streak across their drawing.
Zack: Our drawing is ruined(毁坏)!
Kayla: Don’t be so worried! Quick, mix the water and the chalk together! Now let’s use more chalk and smear(涂抹)it around.
Narrator: Kayla and Zack worked quickly. The smeared colours looked glorious, like rich, thick frosting on a cake.
Ms. Lee: That looks great! That’s a special method you’re using, kids. Are you two interested in taking part in the chalk-art festival tomorrow The timetable for the festival says that drawing starts at 9:00 a.m.
Kayla and Zack: Sure!
Kayla: Tomorrow we’ll pour water over our drawing on purpose.
Zack: Then we’ll know just what to do!

Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea.
“Where can we look for treasure ” asked Huck.
“It’s hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted (闹鬼的) houses.”
So, one Saturday afternoon Tom and his friend went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place, which made the boys feel very frightened. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.
“What is it ” whispered Huck, going white with fear.
“Keep quiet! There’s someone downstairs.”
The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard in a wide sombrero hat and the other was dirty and unpleasant-looking.
Tom and Huck shook with fear when they heard the Spaniard speak because they found it was Indian Joe. He said.
“It’s time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery ”
“Let’s keep $30 each and leave the bag here.”
The dirty man went to the fireplace and moved a stone. Then he lifted out a bag full of money and took out some coins. The two boys forgot all their fears when they saw there was real treasure downstairs. Then Indian Joe started digging a hole with his knife and the knife hit something.
“What is it ” asked the other man.
“It’s a box,” said Indian Joe. And he put in his hand and pulled out a handful of gold coins. The other man found the boys’ tools, and they soon pulled out the box.
“There’s thousands of dollars in there,” said Indian Joe.
“The Murrell Gang used this area one summer,” said his partner.
“They must have hidden their money here.”
“What will we do with this, Joe Will we bury (埋) it again ”
“No, someone might find it,” said Indian Joe. “Let’s bury it in the number two den.”
Tom and Huck got up as soon as the two men left. They decided to watch out for the “man in the sombrero” when he came to town and find out where the number two den was.

Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard disk of a computer. We use it to store files, pictures, language (words, texts, sounds) and so on. Others think the brain to be a huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it. We put information into these boxes and hope to find it again later.
The brain is not a computer disk. And it isn’t a cupboard. Look at the picture here. It looks a bit like weeds (杂草) in a garden, doesn’t it The picture actually shows a child’s neocortex—a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You can guess what happens—more “weeds” grow as the child gets older. Scientists call these neuronal (神经元的) networks. The networks grow around our neurons.
What makes them grow Learning! “Learning is brain change,” says Professor James Zull from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. “Without learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn in your English lesson, every problem you solve in maths, every new song you learn to sing, a neuronal network grows in your brain and the brain changes.”
The more neuronal networks we grow, the better we can think and the better we remember. You may wonder if there is anything you can do to make the networks in your brain grow better. Professor Zull says yes, there is. He says that brain change is strongest when you are interested in and like what you are learning, you are in control of what you learn and you get challenging tasks that make you think hard. Understanding a challenging task makes you feel good and develops your brain.
8. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1
A. The brain—a fantastic computer. B. What people believe about the brain.

9. Which of the following things cannot make our brain grow better

四、七选五
You’ve heard it a million times already, but it really does take but a few seconds to make that all-important first impression. Here are some easy ways for you to impress your classmates or teachers.
1
Before you shake hands with somebody, make sure that your hands are clean. The handshake should not be too strong or too weak. If they don’t have a reason to use their left hands, most people use the right. 2
Be on time
When you meet someone for the first time, arriving on time is as important as breathing (呼吸). You may have an excuse, but that will leave the person who doesn’t know you well enough with a bad impression. 3 It’s better to move around the place than be stuck in traffic.
Introduce yourself and ask about the names
Make sure you properly introduce yourself. Ask about their names politely. 4 This will make it easier for them to remember your name in the future. Always remember to stand up when greeting someone and be sure to introduce them to anyone you’ re with.
Make good conversation(谈话)
To get the most out of your discussion, try to find something in common between the two of you. 5 A person will feel more comfortable with someone he can easily talk to.
A. Use body language.
B. Have a right handshake.
C. Repeat the names and use them later in conversation.
D. As a general rule, plan to arrive about 30 minutes early.
E. You’ll be in serious trouble if you leave them with a bad impression.
F. However, don’t have your left hand in your pocket because this is impolite.
G. It could be a similar (类似的) taste in clothes or a common hobby.
