Merle Liivand was born in Estonia. As a child, she had health problems, and began swimming to help her lungs get stronger. In one training, she nearly swallowed (吞下) some plastic that was moving in the sea. That experience made her think of all the sea animals who faced similar pollution every day. She decided to do something special to make people more aware of the problem.
Thinking about sea creatures gave her the idea of swimming like them. She began swimming with a special single swimming fin (鳍) on both of her feet. This fin allows her to swim by moving both of her legs together at the same time. "Swimming with one fin without using my arms is similar to how dolphins and many other sea animals swim," says Ms. Liivand. She believes that swimming with a fin sends a bigger message.
Ms. Liivand first set the world record for swimming with a fin in 2019, when she swam 6.2 miles off the coast of California. In 2020, she broke the record again by swimming 12.8 miles in Miami, Florida. Last year, she set a new Guinness World Record by swimming 18.6 miles, again in Florida. And she has been getting up at 4 in the morning every day and going swimming since last year. Finally, she broke the record once more, swimming the length of a full marathon. It took her 11 hours and 54 seconds to swim 26.2 miles.
To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a boat and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Ms. Liivand picked up all the rubbish she found and put it in the boat. At the end of her marathon, the boat carried three bags full of rubbish. She says, "This isn't just about a record. It's about helping the community and the world."

Do you sometimes pay no attention to your mom while chatting with friends If you're a teen, that's fairly common. And new research may explain why so many adolescents (青少年) stop listening to their moms' voices.
The researchers studied the brains of 7- to 16-year-old kids as they listened to things said by their mothers or by unfamiliar women. As the kids listened, certain parts of their brains became active. This was especially true in brain regions that help us to pay attention.
Daniel Abrams, a scientist, and his co-workers already knew that younger kids' brains respond (反应) more strongly to their moms' voices than to strangers'. "In adolescence, we show the exact opposite of that," Abrams says. For teens, these brain regions respond more to unfamiliar voices than to their moms'. "As a teen, you don't know you're doing this. You're just being you: You've got your new friends and you want to spend time with them. You take more notice of these unfamiliar voices," Abrams adds.
These areas in the adolescent brain don't stop responding to Mom. It's just that unfamiliar voices become more attractive and then are worthy of attention. As kids grow up, they expand (扩大) their social connections way beyond their family. So their brains need to begin paying more attention to that wider world. "That's exactly what it should be like," Abrams says.
The brain seems to adapt to new needs that come with adolescence. "As we grow up, our survival depends less and less on our mother's support, says Leslie Seltzer, a scientist. "Instead, we depend more and more on our friends and others at the same age as us." So while both teens and their parents may sometimes feel sad about missed messages, that's okay. This is how the adolescent brain works, and there's a good reason for it.
28. What does the research focus on
A. The adolescents' brain development.
B. The teens' response to their mothers' voices.
C. The relationship between kids and their mothers.
D. The influence of mothers on their kids' characters.
29. What do Abrams's words in Paragraph 3 suggest
A. Teens' mind tends to be attracted to unfamiliar voices.
B. Teens' brain activity is closely related to their ages.
C. Teens usually have a bad relationship with their parents.
D. Teens sometimes have difficulty focusing their attention.
30. Which of the following can explain the obvious feature of the adolescent brain
A. Teens' great pressure of study.
B. Teens' wish to live an independent life.
C. Teens' increasing focus on new things.
D. Teens' discomfort of talking with their parents.
31. What is the author's opinion on the change in teens' social preferences
A. It can increase their brain activity.
B. It is confusing.
C. It leads to failure in later life.
D. It is understandable.

As is known to us all, the stories we share with one another are significant(重 要的), which shows our wisdom, providing our inspiration and attaching importance to our development. But occasionally people choose not to tell.
Consider the negative effects of not sharing a story in the news: People are wondering if public health officials are holding back too much information about the recent outbreak of Ebola.
There is a danger in holding back stories that ought to be told. Bobette Buster said it was like this, "The fact is, history has shown us that stories not told can become like a dangerous genie (妖怪) left in a bottle. When they are finally uncorked, their power to destroy is set free."
There are a number of reasons why we hide parts of our story: they often show our weaknesses or expose our disadvantages; they require courage and strength to share, and of course, there are some stories that should be kept secret -especially those that embarrass someone else.
Most of us have two selves: the one we display on the outside and the one we actually are on the inside. And the better we get at hiding the stories that show our true selves, the more damage we may be causing to ourselves and to others.
Honesty and openness is important. It proves we are trustworthy. It displays we are human. We are not perfect or better. It highlights the importance of hard work and personal development. Hard work may not allow us to overcome our disadvantages completely. But with hard work, we do not have to be restricted to our mistakes.
Does this mean we admit every weakness, every disadvantage, and every secret regret to everybody we meet No, of course not. There is a time and a place and a certain level of relationship necessary for some stories to be told in an appropriate manner.
32.What's the function of the example in Paragraph 2
A.It reflects that people are concerned about the spread of Ebola.
B. It proves not sharing a story can cause trouble.
C. It concludes that one should share a story at a proper time.
D. It shows the bad effect caused by sharing a story.
33. Which is close in meaning to the underlined word "uncorked" in Paragraph 3
A. freed B. broken C. unfolded D. untouched
34. One of the reasons why people are unwilling to share experiences is that________.
A. story-sharing highlights the importance of hard work
B. some stories make people feel sad.
C. people are used to exposing their weaknesses
D. people sometimes have no courage to share their stories
35. The writer aims to convince us to_______.
A. remove the dangers that can be caused by untold stories
B. be open to people close to you by sharing some secrets
C. share stories appropriately for the good of others and ourselves
D. realize the importance of being honest when making friends

根据第二段“Consider the negative effects of not sharing a story in the news: People are wondering if public health officials are holding back too much information about the recent outbreak of Ebola. (想想在新闻中不分享情况的负面影响:人们想知道公共卫生官员是否对最近爆发的埃博拉疫情隐瞒了太多信息)”可知,第二段中例举了不分享埃博拉情况导致人们怀疑公共卫生官员是否隐瞒疫情的例子,以此来证明段首“the negative effects of not sharing a story”不分享情况会带来负面影响甚至麻烦的观点。故选B项。
33.词义猜测题。根据划线词所在句“When they are finally uncorked, their power to destroy is set free.(当它们最终被uncorked时,它们的毁灭力量就释放出来了)”句意和其中“is set free”可推知,划线词uncorked意为“打开,释放”之意,与free“解放,使自由”意思相近。故选A项。
根据第四段“There are a number of reasons why we hide parts of our story: they often show our weaknesses or expose our disadvantages; they require courage and strength to share; and of course, there are some stories that should be kept secret — especially those that embarrass someone else. (有很多原因可以解释为什么我们会隐藏自己的故事:它们通常会显示我们的弱点或暴露我们的缺点;分享需要勇气和力量;当然,有些故事应该保密——尤其是那些让别人难堪的情况)”可知,人们不愿意分享经验的原因之一是:人们有时没有勇气分享他们的故事。故选D项。
35.推理判断题。通读全文,并结合第五段中“And the better we get at hiding the stories that show our true selves, the more damage we may be causing to ourselves and to others.(我们越是善于隐藏那些展现真实自我的故事,我们对自己和他人造成的伤害就越大)”和最后一段中“There is a time and a place and a certain level of relationship necessary for some stories to be told in an appropriate manner. (有些故事需要以适当的方式讲述,这需要时间、地点和一定程度的关系)”可推知,作者在文中告诉我们,隐藏自我的故事是有害的,所以劝诫我们要为了他人和自己的利益适当地分享故事。故选C项。
第二节
36.B根据后文“It’s important for you to understand that cultures and beliefs...effectively with people from other countries.” B“Pay more attention to cultural differences."符合上下文语境。故选 B。
37.G 根据前文“The best way to handle cultural differences is to research how different countries handle business meetings or any other type of communication.” G“For example, the Japanese prefer you to get straight to the point instead of making small talks.”
38.D 根据前文“You may sound smart with humorous English jargon among those who have been speaking the language for most of their lives.” So it is best to stick to formal English, which is easier to understand.”可知,前后是对立的,因为其他国家的人可能不理解它,所以作者建议:因为文化差异,还是说正式的英语好。所以选项 D“However, people from other countries may not understand it.”符合上下文语境。故选 D。
39.A 根据前文“Go over any form of written communication before you send it out. It is easy to cause misunderstanding when you deal with people from different parts of the world.”和后文“When reviewing it,make sure that you're not using disrespectful terms or sentences.” A“This may happen without your knowing.” 故选 A。
40.F 根据前文“Always stay updated with the social development.” F“It's known that technology has improved rapidly over the years.”

Dear Mom / Dad,
My junior school life is coming to an end. Now I‘d like to show my thanks to you for your devotion to me these years. Although you have to go to work early every day, you still take time to make breakfast for me. You always give me suggestions on making friends. When I don't do well in study, you will encourage me to ask for help from teachers and classmates. When I make progress, however small, you will praise me. With your help, I go over difficulties more easily. I can never thank you enough for your love and support. I think the best way to show my thanks to you is to aim for excellence in my study. I will spend more time with you and have more patience with you. I want to do everything for you because I can't thank you enough!
Yours,
Li Hua
版本二
Dear Mom and Dad,
My junior high school life is coming to an end and I am about to begin my journey as a high school student, I can’t help but feel grateful for your love and support. Your care and attention in every aspect of my life – from providing for my daily needs to offering emotional support and guidance – have been beyond what I could have asked for.
You have helped me through tough times and provided me with a warm and comfortable home to grow up in. I am especially grateful for the way you have supported me in my studies and in times of pressure. With your wise advice and patience, you have given me the tools to overcome difficulties and build self-confidence.
Now, as I look forward to starting high school, I want to repay your kindness by working hard and striving to become the best student that I can be. I promise to take good care of myself in terms of health, study and relationships, and always make sure that I’m living up to the standards that you have set for me.
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for everything. I hope one day I can repay your kindness by being a good, responsible member of society.
