A study published by Whillans and her colleagues found that 48 percent of college freshmen in their second term at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver believed that their friends had made more friends than they had since school began.Thirty-one percent felt the opposite.
“Since social activities, like eating or studying with others, tend to happen in cafés and libraries where they are easily seen, students might overestimate (高估) how much their friends are socializing because they don’t see them eating and studying alone,” says Frances Chen, the study’s senior author and a professor in the UBC psychology department.
A second, smaller study they published at the same time shows that feeling left out made the students pretty unhappy.“This was surprising,”Whillans says,“because many high-achieving people—the ones most likely going to college—believe they’re better equipped than their peers to handle challenges. But when peers appear to be doing better socially, that can contribute to feelings that there’s something wrong with us.”
While this study did not look specially at the influence of social media, other studies have shown that the way people use social tools to present only the good side makes others feel lonely and separated.“Social media always give us the idea that other people are more social than us,” Whillans says.“We often fail to communicate when we fail, and that might be bad for us and also for our social network.” In the new study,first-year students in the sample of more than 1,000 students reported having 3.63 close friends on average at UBC,but they believed their friends had 4.15 close friends.

As an English teacher,I found that English slang(俚语) can be more difficult for those who learn English as a second language to understand. This became clear when I was talking to one of my students,Cathy,in Japan.“Excuse me,Miss White.I want to go to buy a notebook outside the school.” “It’s bucketing outside,” I said.It is an English slang expression which means “it is raining”.However, she didn’t seem to understand what I said.
The point I’m trying to get across is that being puzzled about English slang in the beginning is perfectly natural because it is what makes the language special. But learning some slang is a fantastic way of understanding the culture of a country.English does have some interesting slang. Here is some of my favourite slang which is common in Northern Ireland.
To keel over:If someone keels over,it basically means that he/she has fallen over because he/she has passed out or died.
To be in bed with your head:This is used to describe someone who has gone to bed because he/she has a headache.
To upset the apple cart:This means that someone has caused trouble or upset someone’s plans.
Dead on:This means “exactly right”,“perfect”,or shows that someone agrees with what you’ve said.
Slang can be difficult to learn but it’s really impressive when you get it right!Slang also helps you sound friendly,so it’s great for making friends. If you can use some of these English expressions in a conversation, people will be amazed!
5.How did Cathy feel when the author said “It’s bucketing outside”
A.She was unhappy.
B.She was surprised.
C.She was worried.
D.She was puzzled.
6.What does the author say about slang
A.It tells us the history of a country.
B.It is created by language teachers.
C.It shows the culture of a country.
D.It is used to impress foreigners.
7.If someone says “Does the word mean ‘elevator’ ”,what could you say
A.I keel over.
B.You’re dead on.
C.You upset the apple cart.
D.I’m in bed with my head.
8.In which part of a newspaper can we read this text
A.Culture. B.Science.
C.Travel. D.Lifestyle.

Learning a new language like English can be a challenge, but with regular study,it can be done. 1 Here are some guidelines to help you improve your English.
2
Learning any new language is a time-consuming process.Rather than try a few hours to review once or twice a week, most experts say short, regular study sessions are more effective. As little as 30 minutes a day can help you improve your English skills over time.
Read,watch,and listen
Reading English newspapers and books, listening to music,or watching TV can also help you develop your writing and speaking skills.By doing so repeatedly, you’ll unconsciously improve your pronunciation, accents, and grammar.Keep the pen and paper handy and write down unfamiliar words you read or hear. 3 Use them the next time you are role-playing dialogues in class.
Play vocabulary and grammar games
You can also improve your English skills by playing vocabulary games that are related to what you’re studying in class. For example,if you are going to study English on topics that focus on vacations, take a moment to think about your last trip and what you did. 4
Write it down
5 Take 30 minutes at the end of class or study to write down what happened during your day.Once you’re comfortable writing about your day, challenge yourself and have some fun with creative writing exercises.Choose a photo from a book or magazine and describe it in a short paragraph,or write a short story or poem about someone you know well. You may even discover you’ve got a talent for writing.
A.Study every day
B.It can even be fun.
C.Set a goal
D.Don’t be afraid of making mistakes.
E.Then,do some research to learn what those new words mean.
F.Make a list of all the words you might use to describe your activities.
G.Repetition is key to learning English, and writing exercises are a great way to practice.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him.“We will have an English spelling test today,Mum,” Peter said.“Mr White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores.I’ve been studying the word list since last week.Although the words are difficult,I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last,it was time for the students to have a test.“Responsibility,” Mr White started.Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word:contribution,” Mr White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr White.“I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers,Mr White said,“Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores.Peter,David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!”
Mr White praised them.Meanwhile,he gave the three students each a dictionary.Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best.Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered.“This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr White gave the test paper back,Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him.It didn’t seem right.Peter began to check it after taking out the word list.“C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.

It was a beautiful Monday. Our teacher told us that there would be an English Corner after class.I set off after the last class in the afternoon.
To my joy,the English Corner had just been on for a few minutes.I joined them in their talk.At first,I was afraid that my English was so poor and limited that I couldn’t follow them or make myself understood.I was also afraid that someone might laugh at me but a smiling face here and an encouraging nod there soon put me at ease.I became brave and came to speak English with them freely.
It was an unforgettable day.We all learned a lot of knowledge and made a lot of friends.Through practice,we all improved our English.Though we spoke only in simple English,we all held the belief that tomorrow we would make great progress.
Ⅴ.“What should I do ” Staring at the red sign “100%” which was written on his test paper,Peter was lost in thought. After a while,he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him,“We ought to be an honest person.” Slowly,Peter raised his hand.“Mr White,I didn’t get 100 percent on the test.I missed a word.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper.“I spelled contribution with ‘s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’.”Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk.Mr White held up Peter’s test paper.“Class,” he said,“Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.”Mr White smiled at Peter.“He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter,I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr White said.Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr White.Meanwhile,he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.
