One day,I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk.As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished.Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders,he said,“You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled.I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate topic.“Well,I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him,“Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall By the way, have you ever been there ”
“Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it.It is magnificent.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide,“The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was interrupted again by his words,“You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking,“Why do you ask me not to talk about it ”
“Well,I didn’t request you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised.I said,“Didn’t you say ‘You don’t say!’ ” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain,“‘You don’t say!’ actually means ‘Really!’ It is an expression of surprise.Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.”

Eleven of the world’s languages have at least 100 million native speakers. The biggest are Mandarin Chinese,English,Spanish,Arabic and Hindi.Next come Portuguese,Bengali,Russian,Japanese,French and German.Experts say these eleven languages are the mother tongues of half the world’s population. But the world has close to seven thousand languages.Linguists predict that as many as half of these may be at risk of disappearing by the end of this century. That would mean another language dies every two weeks.
Members of the Siletz Indian tribe (部落) in the northwestern state of Oregon take pride in their language.“Their language,”they say,“is as old as time itself.” But today very few people can speak it fluently. In fact, you can count the number of fluent speakers on one hand.
More than 10,000 entries can be found in the Siletz Online Talking Dictionary.Professor Harrison has posted talking dictionaries for seven other highly endangered languages from around the world. He says technology can not only spread the influence of major languages but also help save endangered ones.Smartphone apps,YouTube videos and Meta pages have all become digital tools for language activists and experts.

They are both typical Chinglish,a combination of English vocabulary and Chinese grammar.Expressions such as “people mountain people sea”,means extremely crowded, and “give you some color to see see”,meaning a punishment, are widely known and recognised.
Chinglish has been attracting global attention in recent years as China grows rapidly in status on the world stage, attracting both fans and detractors (诽谤者).
The Beijing Speaks Foreign Languages Programme and English First China Company,a language trainer known as EF Education, jointly launched a campaign to root out poor grammar and misused vocabulary in downtown Beijing. They argue Chinglish is an embarrassment that we should let it die out at all costs.
“It is meaningful to allow the capital to show its most beautiful historical and cultural heritage to the world,” said Michael Lu,vice-president of EF Education. He believed signs were very important in public services.“The signs in some old buildings confused foreign visitors.”
Chinglish, although the target of much criticism, has also won supporters who regard it as an interesting way for foreigners to learn how Chinese people think and express themselves.
“Many Chinglish logos carry Chinese elements and they will enrich the English language,” 32-year-old Oliver Radtke said.He had even published a book “Chinglish:Found in Translation”,on the subject,50,000 copies of which have been sold since it was published in 2007.
Some Chinese university experts also side with Chinglish.“English has absorbed elements from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and the emergence (出现) of Chinglish again shows the language’s liveliness and inclusiveness (包容性),”said Shi Anbin,an associate professor of Tsinghua University.

Avoid Misunderstanding Idioms
An idiom is a phrase or expression whose meaning is not always straightforward or easy to understand. 36 The meaning is that you don’t know who someone is,or what something is by their appearance. It is impossible to be familiar with all idiomatic expressions. You will come across some newer ones that you haven’t heard before. When this happens, here are some ways for you to get an idea about what is being said.
37 This advice applies when you hear some odd phrases in a conversation. You have to consider what the general context is in the conversation, and from there you will be able to make a guess of how the idiomatic expression connects to the conversation.Of course, this requires that you listen actively to the conversation and that your mind is not somewhere else.
Check your understanding. If you want to make sure your understanding is correct, you may want to change the sentence into simple language and ask the person you are talking to if the meaning is correct. It never hurts to try to make something that you have heard in a conversation clearer. 38
Consider the body language of the speaker. 39 If you see that someone has expressive facial expressions and gestures, and that he may be joking, consider this when trying to understand an idiomatic expression. Some of these expressions may not have a good and pleasant meaning if the words are taken literally (字面地).However,if you connect together all other information you are given in the conversation, you will realise that it has a totally different meaning.
40 There’s no better way to become more familiar with idiomatic expressions than to read all different types of resources. For example, you will find a lot of idiomatic expressions in novels. What’s also good about this is that since you are reading it and going at your own pace, you actually have the opportunity to check the meaning by yourself. After that,if you see the same expression in another sentence, you’ll better understand its true meaning.
A.If you don’t ask,you don’t learn.
B.Consider the context of the sentence.
C.Guess the idiom through its literal meaning.
D.Enlarge your knowledge by reading all the time.
E.It is important for English learners to know all idiomatic expressions.
F.Body language can give you hints to help you understand confusing phrases.
G.An example would be when someone says,“You can’t judge a book by its cover.”

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The walls of failure surrounded me.I saw my teacher’s eyes fixed on my every move.My mum’s blank expression betrayed one thing:disappointment.“He is not giving his full potential,” I heard my teacher say.I gazed down, afraid, ashamed, and determined. My determination was not to excel and put my best effort into improvement;my determination told me to give up.
It was my first year in the United States.I was a fifth grader, and everything around me seemed alien. My native language had been Spanish, and after coming to the United States from Puerto Rico because of serious family problems,I just felt like hiding inside my metaphorical shell. The school itself was bright and very welcoming. The bright walls with colored dinosaurs and cartoons were appealing, and the distinct smell of crayons, play dough, and chalks made the place feel like my home.
Then why did I have such a negative attitude It was not because my teachers did not support me.They were willing to stay after school with me to help me learn the concepts. It was not because my classmates did not want me there. Most of them invited me to sit with them at lunch. It was not because I could not talk to anyone;I had a bilingual teacher with me all day, helping me.
My negative attitude was the result of frustration and lack of interest in study. No matter how hard I tried, the mysterious code known as “English” would not take root in my brain.I tried for hours to improve my grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, but the unknown language “did not want to be learned”.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
One afternoon,my mother was informed to attend a parent-teacher conference.

Today we will talk about an expression from the famous book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The book was published in 1865.The story is about a young girl falling,falling,falling...for a long time down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world.
In this strange world are some of the most well-known characters in children’s literature. Many of them, and other expressions from the book, have found their way into American English.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit. The White Rabbit is not your usual rabbit.First of all,he is wearing a vest and carrying a pocket watch.Running past Alice,he says,“I’m late!I’m late! For a very important date!No time to say hello or goodbye.I’m late,I’m late!I’m late!”
Alice chases after him,and that is where her adventures begin. In English, chasing a white rabbit means to chase the impossible,a dream. The White Rabbit is so strange that Alice cannot help but to follow him.As she chases after him,she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland and begins her mysterious journey.

写作
第一节
Hello,everyone!
I’m glad to share with you about how I learn English.
Firstly,I listen to my teacher carefully and write the important points down on my notebooks. After class I revise the lessons. And before the next class I prepare new lessons to find out the questions. Then I will listen carefully in class.
Besides,I listen to the tape and speak with myself. It’s really good for improving my listening and speaking.
Last but not least,I often read English and magazines to enrich my knowledge on English culture.
I believe,we can learn English well as long as we learn it hard.
That’s all.Thank you.
第二节
One afternoon,my mother was informed to attend a parent-teacher conference.Having learned my sudden lack of interest and that I had just given up,she was not content. In fact,I spent that whole afternoon listening to her telling me why I should struggle. She told me,“You can never achieve your goal unless you put your best effort into it.” That simple statement stuck in my young mind.It “clicked” and inspired me.
The next day,I found myself understanding English words I had thought I would never know.A simple change in attitude had made the words slowly go from looking like something alien to actually making sense. My teachers’ welcoming smile, patience, and bright attitude,in addition to my desire to learn, were enough to make a difference.Within days,I found myself starting to communicate with the natives in English fluently. My mother helped me to see where my problems were lying. And I learned that success in life requires desire, but desire is not enough. One needs push from someone and he cares to achieve what seems to be impossible.第四单元测评

Jason and Henry have been “wagon(四轮车) pullers” since the second day of kindergarten. They are very good at taking turns pulling or pushing the wagon.Today,a pair of twins would join my class.I asked Jason if he could be a “trainer” to train one of the twins,Bradley,to pull the wagon,if he didn’t cry in the morning so that he could be accepted by the other kids quickly.
Jason was so cute and said,“He isn’t very strong. How about if he’s a pusher, not a puller ”Very great idea by Jason! The kids took the job very seriously, and they became close friends in no time, which brought a comforting smile to my face.Jason is one of the youngest kids in my class but very kind, helpful and thoughtful!
Another student,Henry, took Nolan(Bradley’s twin) under his wing.We have our line leader and Henry is our “second in command” who helps the line leader stay focused and in line.I had Nolan be “third in command” behind Henry. From that moment on,Henry took Nolan under his wing, guiding him patiently.
After lunch,Henry told me,“I want to sit by Nolan in the wagon.” I helped seat the kids at once.Later in the day,Henry told me,“I hope Nolan gets to be the wagon puller tomorrow.” What a sweet idea! It’s so sweet to have a four-year-old boy cheering on a friend—when kids of all ages fight to be the one to pull the wagon.
It’s a kind, sweet group, and I especially loved these moments today.I emailed all the parents the sweet stories.

(2023湖南益阳高一月考)
Group exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve physical fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle.Group exercise is challenging, yet fun and empowering!Of course everyone knows that exercise is good for the body. However, studies have shown that when exercise is performed in groups,it’s not only great for improving physical health but for psychological health. It’s an opportunity to be social, release endorphins(内啡肽),and improve your strength.Additionally, group exercise creates a community feel and the shared common goal motivates participants to work hard. The instrumental support of taking on a fitness journey with others proves more effective than going to the gym alone.
Another beneficial aspect of group exercise is the informational support participants receive from the instructor. Many people fear the gym because they feel lost and don’t want to embarrass themselves. If you feel you can relate, then group training is an even better option for you. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about fitness through the clear instruction and supervision of a fitness instructor. If you’re tired of wandering around the gym wasting time and becoming bored, you can attend a cheerful group fitness class that’ll keep your workout on track.Don’t let fitness frighten you!
If you’re serious about wanting to live a healthy lifestyle,it’s extremely important to surround yourself with people who’ll provide you with the proper emotional support.I wouldn’t scold anyone for deciding to party on weekends and in turn I wouldn’t expect anyone to give offence to me for focusing on my health.Surround yourself with people who uplift, encourage and understand you!Make fitness even more fun by trying something new or any group fitness class, with a friend.Plan to go for a jog together. Then try a fun healthy restaurant or fresh juice bar!Fitness can be both fun and social!
Surrounding yourself with people who’ll provide you with respect and support can be very beneficial while working towards reaching health and fitness goals.First, decide to do it for yourself and work towards staying positive. Then make sure the people you surround yourself with are supportive.Don’t let negativity ruin your motivation.

Some people say that friendship is the only channel through which human beings can ever experience the value of life.In our daily life,it is likely that you share some common interests with others—they may like the same sport,go to the same school or like the same kind of music as you do.Since you often meet them, they become your acquaintances(相识的人).Although some people develop many acquaintances, only a few become their good friends in their lifetime because there are differences between acquaintances and friends.
It is said that true friendship begins when someone knows what you are really like, but still likes you anyway.A true friend shows loyalty(忠诚) from the very beginning of the relationship.A friend will go through challenges to help you without expecting anything in return.A “friend” today may probably become a “true friend” tomorrow when they get involved in unexpected circumstances(条件) together with you—for example, when you are going through a difficult experience and your friend is there to help you out. However, some acquaintances might leave you when you badly need their help.At this time, you can experience what true friendship is.
In our life, some people seem to go through life with plenty of friends. They may be funny or they may have a bright and pleasant personality. For these people, wherever they go,people seem to like them and welcome their company. But when they go through challenging life experiences, some of their friends are not there to help them. Therefore,we can say some of their friends are not real friends and their friendship is just skin-deep.
However, others seem to go through life with no friends at all. They like to be alone,to travel by themselves or to do their own things. It’s a pity that few of these people find success in life because they have no friends. They lack the best gift in life—friendship.
32.What can we learn about acquaintances from the passage
A.You seldom meet them in your life. B.Not all of them can become your friends.
C.They are sure to become your good friends. D.They have all of the same interests as you do.
33.According to the passage,we can know that .
A.it’s easier to lose a friend than to get one
B.people without friends are always successful
C.it doesn’t matter whether one has friends or not
D.people with bright personality are easy to have friends

A.Very deep. B.Not deep at all.
C.As precious as skin. D.Hidden under the skin.

38 Explain what you feel is the problem and be honest about it.Then ask them to do the same.Really listen and don’t cut in.This way,you both get to tell your side of the story and get everything out on the table.
Apologize to them and accept their apology.Even if you didn’t do anything and you believe the situation is their fault, opening with an apology sets the tone. You could say,“I’m really sorry that things have gotten to this point. 39 ” If you did something wrong, apologize to them frankly. If they apologize to you, accept their apology kindly.
Take things slowly. If you and your best friend had a major dispute, hanging out every day after school as you used to do probably isn’t the healthiest way to rebuild things. 40 This will give you both time to heal and rebuild your friendship together.

It should have been a perfect summer. My father bought me a new bicycle though I couldn’t ride very well.He set a basketball hoop for me in the backyard, and best of all built a tree house beside it.But it wasn’t,because Jeremy Ross moved into the neighborhood.
He laughed at me when he struck me out of the baseball game, and he had a party on his trampoline(蹦蹦床) while I wasn’t invited.Jeremy Ross became my enemy.I didn’t like him at all.Dad understood stuff like enemies. He told me he had enemies too when he was my age and that he knew a good way to get rid of them.“I’ll show you,” he said.
He began to make the Enemy Pie in the kitchen which he said was the fastest known way to get rid of enemies.Excitedly,I got my mind working:Dad might put disgusting things like weeds, earthworms and rocks from the backyard into the pie,but none of those.Instead,I smelled something really, really good from our kitchen.Confused,I went to ask my dad.“If the pie smelled bad, your enemy would never eat it,” he said.I was catching on.
Still,I wasn’t quite sure how this Enemy Pie worked. What exactly did it do to enemies Maybe it made their hair fall out,or made their breath smelly
“Everything is ready except that there’s one part left for the Enemy Pie to work. You need to invite your enemy over.Even worse, you have to be nice and make friends with him.I know it’s not easy, but that’s the only way Enemy Pie can work,” Dad told me.
It sounded horrible, but it was worth a try.All I had to do was spend time with Jeremy Ross and then he’d not trouble me for the rest of my life.
I knocked on Jeremy’s door.Jeremy seemed surprised when he opened the door, waiting for me to say something.“Um,can you come to my house and play with me ” I asked nervously.

(Text 10)
Today let’s talk about what to pay attention to if you plan to invite someone over to your house or if you are invited to a party.
When making an invitation, you should telephone friends, speak to friends yourself,or send out written notes.A written invitation should include the date, time, place, and a description of the occasion.
If you are invited to dinner at someone’s home,it is wise to arrive 10 minutes late. The host may need time to deal with many other things besides preparing the dinner.Although some people think it is welcome,it is not necessary to bring flowers or gifts when you are invited to lunch or dinner, except on special occasions, such as a birthday. If you want to bring something,it should be small and simple, such as a book,a box of candy or a bottle of wine.
I hope this is helpful. Thanks for listening!

写作
第一节
Everyone has an unforgettable experience. My most memorable was the first time to volunteer at the Happiness Nursing Home last summer holiday.
As a member of volunteers,I got up early because I was too excited to sleep. In the morning,we volunteers bought some flowers and fresh fruit. As we arrived at the Happiness Nursing Home,we sent them our best wishes too.How happy they were! Then we cleaned the windows and swept the floor for them. After that, some of us performed activities for them, such as singing songs and dancing. Some of us read newspaper for them. Some of us chatted with them. When it was time for us volunteers to leave, they were grateful for our kindness.
From this meaningful activity,I found that we are supposed to care for the old and respect them.In our daily life,we should offer our seats to them on buses. And we should treat our own grandparents more kindly.
第二节
Jeremy nodded and came playing with me in my backyard. To my surprise,he was nice.He even taught me the trick of riding the bicycle. Then we shot basketballs happily. He was good at it.It was strange that I should be kind of having fun with my enemy!I let him play games in my tree house which I didn’t even allow my sister in.We had a good laugh and enjoyed each other’s company.“He wasn’t a very good enemy,” I thought to myself.
Later that day Dad got us to have the pie in the kitchen.I whispered to him Jeremy was no longer my enemy, but he ignored my message. He cut the pie into three pieces, passing one to me and one to Jeremy.I panicked.“Don’t eat it!It’s bad pie!” I shouted.Dad smiled at me and took a bite of the Enemy Pie.I watched them eating, neither of them losing hair!Cautiously,I took a tiny taste:Yummy! That summer was a perfect summer!第六单元测评

My brother Stanley died last January from cancer, and I spent a lot of time with him in hospital over his last few months.I witnessed the care he received and,at the time,I thought it was poor.It shocked and hurt me.
While Stanley was sick,I was a medical student.I therefore put a lot of time and energy in the medical profession. It gave me an insider’s view of the care Stanley received, when most people spending time with a very sick loved one only have an outside view. However,as I see now it made me judge the care that his doctors and nurses gave him too harshly(严厉的).
We experienced long waits in emergency departments, and doctors were unsure of the details of Stanley’s case.We waited around for doctors to arrive, but they seldom turned up.But worst of all was Stanley’s senior doctor.Near the end,he announced coldly that there was nothing left to try.“All the choices have been used,” he said. And with that,he left, never to be seen again.
All this affected the way I thought about my studies.Did I want to work in a field where people treated patients as if they were numbers on a chart After Stanley died,I finished my studies and graduated with all the rest of students in my year. They went on to get jobs in hospitals, while I took a year out.I simply couldn’t face working in medicine.
Finally,I applied for and got a position as a cancer doctor in a busy clinic in a big city. Now I was a cancer doctor myself, and I often had to tell patients bad news.It is a terribly difficult thing to inform someone that they have a serious illness.I also found that I couldn’t always answer patients’ questions. They would want to know whether they could be cured,or how long they would live, but it wasn’t always possible to say.
It was then that I understood what difficult job health providers do.It made me think back to my experiences with doctors and nurses when Stanley was sick.Perhaps what I had thought was unprofessionalism(不专业) or coldness was just a reflection of the demanding nature of the work.
I began to see my patients as Stanley, and myself no longer as his sister, but one of his caregivers.
Now I was in their shoes—the people who spend every day caring for others.
I still miss Stanley horribly, but at least now the anger has gone.

In some parts of China, mainly in Anhui Province and Zhejiang Province, spread groups of grey-tiled and white-walled houses, forming one of the most typical scenes captured in traditional Chinese landscape paintings. It is Hui-style architecture, one of the major Chinese architectural styles of ancient times.
Hui-style architecture developed into a significant building school in the Song Dynasty. In the mid-Ming Dynasty, gardens and houses constructed with Hui styles developed very quickly along with the success of Hui commerce(商业).Hui-style architecture soon stepped out from Huizhou and was introduced to big towns.
Hui-style architecture is characterized by the arrangement of villages together with nature, and a simple and beautiful exterior(外观).
Hui-style houses are usually ones with skylights(天井).With a square skylight surrounded by houses from four sides or from left, right and backside, these houses can reduce the beat of sunshine and enjoy ventilation(通风).All the houses gather water from the skylight which means fortune will not run off outside.
In ancient times, the colors used for buildings were very strict.Bright colors could only be used in palaces, temples and for government officials. So people in Huizhou chose the black and white colors to paint their houses.
Generally speaking, the exterior appearance of Hui-style buildings differs little while their interior can vary a lot based on the wishes of the owners.Home decoration is characterized by three types of Hui carving:stone carving, wood carving and brick carving.

(Text 5)
W:Mike, have you ever seen Peking Opera
M:Of course. It’s seen as the symbol of China.I suppose every foreigner would manage to see one.
W:Definitely. What do you think of Peking Opera
M:Well,it is an admirable art and at the same time difficult to understand.
(Text 6)
M:I heard the news on the radio that there was a hurricane in Florida yesterday.
W:Oh,really Were there any deaths

W:And I’ve noticed after the meal you got up and left without saying anything.
M:These things don’t matter at home.I guess I’ve got a lot to learn.
W:Don’t worry about it.I had a lot more to learn when I first arrived. They told me I was standing too close to people. They care about space here.
M:Yeah, new culture, new rules. Thanks for telling me all this. This weekend I’ll look for an English class.I’d like to do a short course while I’m here.
W:Well,I went to school in the city.I really liked it there.I’ll look it up for you.
(Text 10)
M:With the development of science and technology, people have more spare time. But how do we spend the free time I prefer to go outdoors and spend my free time in some different places and with some different people.
The first reason for outdoor activities is that I have spent too much time indoors. Most of the time I sit in the classroom, listen to the teachers and do my exercises. The outdoor activities are too limited.Fresh air, sunlight and most important, enough physical exercise are needed for a healthy body.So when I am free,I should go out.The second reason is that I want to have more experiences in my life. When you go out,far away from your daily life, you will meet a lot of people who are quite different from you.It will give you a lot of exciting experiences.
However, outdoor activities will take a lot of money and energy. So if you have not prepared enough, having some amusement indoors is also a good choice, which may be much cheaper and easy to carry out.Reading some books and enjoying music are also very good.

Yours,

UNESCO World Heritage Sites were created to celebrate and safeguard the most unique places around the world.Below are my 4 favorite UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Cinque Terre,Italy
With cars banned here, you’ll really get to feel the unique history and character of the Cinque Terre’s five centuries-old coastal villages. The breathtaking views of harbors(港口) far below the wild coastline along with the rich colors will definitely make it a memorable holiday.
Angkor Wat,Cambodia
Angkor Wat is the world’s largest religious(宗教的) monument and it contains impressive remains from the Khmer Empire (9th to 15th century). The site has dozens of iconic temples like Ta Prohm (a magnificent temple ruin hidden in the jungle).Hosting more than two million visitors annually, this artistic masterpiece is a must-see site.
Petra,Jordan
Petra’s rock-cut architecture has contributed to its nickname, the Rose City, based on the color of the stone it was carved from. The delicate constructions of temples and tombs along with the remains of churches and temples are only a couple of reasons why this world-famous site is a must-visit destination.
Yellowstone National Park,USA

A Pakistani Wildlife team, which runs a breeding programme, has been taking care of green turtle babies during this breeding season. When a female turtle walked across the Karachi beach late one night, workers from the Sindh Wildlife group in Pakistan watched and waited patiently. The female turtle buried a hundred or more eggs in the sand before heading back out into the sea.
The pandemic(流行病) has led to emptier coastal areas around the world.Sea turtles have used the chance to return to their birthplaces in large numbers, reclaiming the less-polluted,quieter beaches to lay their eggs during the main September-November breeding season.
“The turtles have still had enough egg-laying chances during this period. In this season,we have had a large number of turtles coming here. The result is that we have helped 6,000 eggs so far,” said Ashfaq Ali Memon, who leads Sindh Wildlife’s Sea Turtle Unit.
As soon as the mother turtle leaves, workers hurry to dig out the eggs. They move them to a one-meter-deep hole in a hatchery(孵化处) until the babies come out of the eggs, about 40 to 45 days later. The new turtles are taken to the beach immediately and set free into the sea.
The Sindh turtle unit has set free 860,000 turtle babies to the sea since being set up in 1970.Memon said 900 had been set free so far this season.
Experts say that in the past, sea turtle populations were endangered by demand for their fat, meat and eggs, but in recent years loss of habitat from pollution and land reclamation have also threatened the animals.
24.How many baby turtles have been set free to the sea so far in this season
A.900. B.5,100. C.6,000. D.860,000.

When we see a person in trouble our immediate reaction is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply
This question was raised after a group of penguins were saved from an icy gully(峡谷) in Antarctica. It was filmed for the BBC wildlife series Dynasties. After seeing that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young the film crew were so concerned about their safety that they built a slope(斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.
The case has taken the international media by storm.Viewers watching this film let out a sigh of relief.“I’m so glad.I understand not getting directly involved, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right ”viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Meta.
However, others think human interference(干涉) is unnatural.“You can’t have sunshine throughout your life.To have done anything else would only make matters worse,” said the show’s creator David Attenborough, according to The Times.
In this case, however,Mike Gunton, the executive producer of the series, said that this was a one-off situation.“There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. You weren’t touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this. They had the chance not to have to keep slipping down the slope,” he told the BBC.
Such cases are familiar to Paul Nicklen, wildlife photographer for National Geographic. He told Metro,“If it’s ever a predator(捕食者) situation,no matter how gut-wrenching,you stay out of the way.Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear.”
“There’s no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you,” Will Lawson, the show’s director, told Daily Mail.

The effects of noise can reach organisms(生物体) without ears.Because of the way living things rely on each other, noise pollution may actually stop some forests from growing,a new study suggests. In a New Mexico woodland of pine trees, researchers found far fewer tree seedlings(小苗) in noisy sites than they did in quiet ones.
The study area is dotted with gas wells, some of which are quiet and some of which have compressors(压缩机) that create a constant noise. This allowed Jennifer Phillips,a behavioral ecologist at Texas A&M University—San Antonio and her colleagues to compare sites that were similar except for noise level. In areas that had been noisy for at least 15 years, the researchers found only about 13 pine seedlings, compared with 55 pine seedlings per hectare(公顷) in quiet areas.
The differences in plant growth were probably caused by changes in animal behavior, said Phillips. For example, noise might drive away certain pollinators(传粉昆虫) such as bees, bats and moths. In the case of pine trees, the problem was likely a lack of animals to disperse seeds.Pines depend on birds to carry their seeds away from the parent tree, and birds are known to avoid noise. The differences between the sites aren’t yet obvious to someone walking through them, said Sarah Termondt,a botanist(植物学家) with the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service who helped conduct the study. That’s probably because pines are slow-growing,with most of the mature trees in such woodlands being over a century old.
The study raises questions about the future of the area.“If the noise stays there long term, are we going to lose this important ecosystem of the pine which supports so much wildlife ” said Phillips. The study was published today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society.
32.What does the new study focus on
A.The influence of noise pollution on plants.
B.The way the organisms receive noise.
C.The harm of noise pollution to insects.
D.The effects of noise pollution on humans.
33.What can be learned from paragraphs 2 and 3
A.Gas wells dotted in the area provide favorable conditions for the study.
B.The study sites are different in many ways including their noise level.
C.It is difficult for plants to live without noise and animals.
D.People can easily find the difference between the noisy and the quiet sites.
34.What does the underlined word “mature” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Seedling. B.Thin. C.Grown-up. D.Tall.
35.What does Phillips mean by saying the words in the last paragraph
A.Noise pollution is obviously a trouble that can be avoided.
B.Noise pollution could be a threat with the power to change ecosystems.
C.The pine forest is important because it supports so much wildlife.
D.Wildlife should be well protected for the future of this area.

I’m crazy about running.Sometimes the pain of running can have a magic influence on a runner.Throughout any given race, you are suffering.Your lungs feel like they’re being squeezed(挤压) by something unseen. But it is in this pain that a great runner is created.
My first cross-country coach told me that every race is run with patience and determination.I’ve carried this advice with me for hundreds of miles.I especially remember the 5 miles of running in one race, where his words encouraged me a lot.
That day the weather was perfect.I and dozens of runners gathered at the starting line to do some last-minute preparations for the running. Then,we lined up and got ready to start. There was a brief moment before the gun gave a signal of running. In that moment of great stress,I determined to push myself to run as fast as possible, hoping to make my coach proud, who was waiting for me at the finish line. When the sound of “Bang” came up,we were off.
Running between runners,I managed to work my way up in the first 400 meters and passed many racers on my sides. But out of good sportsmanship,we each said a “good job” or “keep up” to every person we passed.Although we were competitors, running was a connection we all shared.
The first mile passed quickly in a feeling of excitement. It was not challenging in the beginning of the running. But I knew it would be harder and harder in the following miles.I made full use of the running skills that my coach had taught me.I checked that I was doing everything right, breathing in through my nose, keeping my hands relaxed and pumping(快速摆动) my arms. However, the shadow of tiredness danced before me.Anyway I tried to push it out of my mind.
With time going by,the competition became fiercer.Every runner tried their best to run in order to gain a good place in the race.Audience along the track shouted and cheered us.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。

At first I was laughed at for being crazy, but I insisted, and then published articles and pictures of the serious pollution of the city on the school website.Luckily,I persuaded my headmaster and friends to join.Since then,we’ve worked together to promote our club. And up to now,85% of the students have joined us and enjoyed the simple but eco-friendly life.
Such is Joy,a responsible and persistent girl. Please choose me to be your student.Thank you!

第一节
Good afternoon,everyone!
What is known to all is that all the animals play a part in keeping the balance of nature.Unfortunately, many wild animals are facing the danger of extinction. The reasons are various. On the one hand, the environment that they are living in has been greatly destroyed. On the other hand, they are being over hunted.
So we must take measures to protect them.We should raise our awareness of animal protection.Besides, let’s make every effort to protect animals’ living environment.
I hope we can live in harmony with animals.Let’s take action.
That’s all.Thanks for your listening.
第二节
Eventually I reached the final mile.It was then that I felt extremely tired and sweat fell down my face. Many runners in the race had fallen behind, but I refused to be one of them.Instead,I chose to pump my legs a little faster and push myself a little harder. As the last half mile was near, the number of people along the track increased.Around the next corner,I could see my coach waving to me in great excitement.I tried to run faster.
Unfortunately,I suddenly fell down.I felt great pain and discouraged.Just at that moment, the audience shouted,“Come on,girl!” “Watch out!” “Keep up!” Meanwhile,a runner behind me came to me and gave me a lift.I was really grateful and encouraged.I stood up and ran for the final 400 metres. When I finally sailed over the finish line,I nearly cried with relief.I won the third place in the race.My coach was proud of me and I felt great too.第一单元测评

Two years ago,Holmes participated in Back to School Bash.He was holding down two jobs at the time—one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber.Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day,but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment:“The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it for the next two years.Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair.If they were puzzled over a word,Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review the book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes—just like in school, only more fun.Holmes, who is married and has two sons, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.
Holmes admits he,too, benefits from the process.“There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering(口吃) over words even though he didn’t have a stutter,” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later,“He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”
Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled,he plans to take up his role as the Storybook Barber.“Although the world today is with guns and violence,” he says,“it’s a safe heaven for the kids,to come to the barbershop and read books.”

Few things are more satisfying than sleeping late on weekends. But though the extra sleep may improve your mood,it does not appear to improve your health.A new study shows that so-called “recovery sleep” cannot reset the body clock and may actually lead to some serious health problems.
Christopher Depner,an assistant professor at the Department of Integrative Physiology of the University of Colorado Boulder, said,“Sleep loss can influence a range of physiological systems. It can increase our risk of high blood pressure and heart disease,it can cause weight gain, and it can increase our risk of diabetes(糖尿病).”
In the study,Depner and his colleagues divided the volunteers into three groups. One group was allowed to get a full night’s sleep. The next was kept to just five hours each night. And the third group went back and forth, limited to five hours of shut-eye during the weekdays, but allowed as much sleep as they wanted on the weekend.
“We found that a loss of sleep leads to a sharp increase in snacking. But even more surprising, sleeping on the weekend doesn’t help—and even makes things worse,” said Depner.“After the weekend, when they went back to getting inadequate sleep during the work or school week, their liver and muscle insulin(胰岛素) sensitivity or blood sugar regulation was reduced. And this is not something we found in people who had long-term inadequacy sleep schedules. So it’s possible that this is a worsening of the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar for these specific tissues after the weekend.”
So make a date with a pillow. And trade the sweets for sweet dreams.
28.What effect does sleep loss have on people
A.It results in changes in their moods. B.It does harm to the body clock.
C.It damages the liver severely. D.It makes people become heavier.
29.What do we know about the volunteers in the second group
A.They were allowed to have the least sleep in a week.
B.They could have as much sleep as possible on weekends.
C.Their liver or muscle insulin sensitivity was reduced.
D.Their ability to regulate blood sugar was found worsened.
30.What does the author advise readers to do according to the text
A.To sleep extra hours on weekends. B.To balance their work and sleep.
C.To trade some sweets as possible. D.To get enough sleep on weekdays.
31.From which part of a website is the text probably taken
A.Culture. B.Health. C.Sci-tech. D.Fashion.

Certainly,a well-rounded (全面的) education is the foundation (基础) from which all of us spring forth.I am grateful to many great teachers who have inspired me to do greater things, and have fired my enthusiasm for everlasting learning!
But,sometimes I wonder if the outline of our educational plan is lacking something.I watched the movie Easy A with my daughter. The main character’s parents were loving, supportive, and built great confidence in their children and developed their ability to handle their own problems.
There was a scene where the mother was speaking to the younger child who announced that he received an “A” on his spelling test. She replied,“That’s great, honey, but everything has spell check these days.”It was funny....but TRUE!I don’t mean that we shouldn’t teach our children how to spell, but maybe some of our time should be spent educating them about the dangers of posting things on Meta.Maybe we might want to spend time showing them how real life works—the credit card isn’t free money—you will have to pay it back at sometime.Oh,and get this—they charge you for borrowing that money.Perhaps,we should spend some time on interpersonal relationships.I worry that our kids do not know how to relate to one another.
Choosing a career is a daunting task.My daughter is in her second year in college and has changed her major(主修课程) twice. It’s not that she didn’t know what she wanted to do.What she “wanted to do” and the course she chose did not match.
I have learned many college students do not know what they want to do because they haven’t seen what it looks like in the real world.Being a journalist in the real world looks very different from writing stories.Maybe if we spent some time exposing them to real life experience—maybe two or three courses in areas of interest in high school that give them a “feel” for what that particular field would look like, they might be better prepared.I do not know the solution, but it seems that it should at least be a topic of discussion.
32.Why does the author mention the movie Easy A
A.To share the movie with readers. B.To show parents’ love for their children.
C.To lead to the topic he is going to talk about. D.To prove the importance of being supportive.
33.The author believes that .
A.parents and schools should work together
B.there is no need for students to learn spelling
C.children are able to handle their own problems
D.it is important to help students understand the real world
34.What does the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Special. B.Discouraging. C.Unimportant. D.Simple.
35.What is mainly discussed in the passage
A.Schools should prepare students for their future life.
B.Foundation is important for a well-rounded education.
C.Life experience is more important than school education.
D.Students should take part-time jobs to get working experience.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so,however. 36 Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully.
When you plan your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time.First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc.,then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
38
Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
39 Listening carefully in class means less work later.Taking notes will help you remember what the teachers say.
Study regularly.
When you get home from school,go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 40 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A.Find a good place to study.
B.This will help you understand the next class.
C.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.
D.Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
E.No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
F.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say.
G.Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teachers say in class.

In 1968,I was a student at the Sophia Hagopian High School in Beirut,Lebanon. One day,I went to the head teacher’s office and told him that my parents could not pay the tuition(学费).Although I was the top student in my class,I was sent home because of being short of money. This was a heartbreaking experience for me,as I really wanted to continue my education.
I went home and spent my day at my father’s tire-repair shop. One day,a very old man saw me in the shop and wondered why I was not in school.I told him the reason. He offered to help by calling the head teacher of the Hovaguimian-Manougian High School and asking him to accept me without tuition. The next day,I took a city bus to the school and went to the head teacher’s office. However, when I told the head teacher the reason for my visit,he shouted at me that there was no free tuition.I immediately turned around and rushed back to my home.
On the third day,one of my classmates from Sophia Hagopian High School came to inform me that the head teacher had sent him to tell me that I should come back to school and register(登记).When I arrived at school,I told the registrar that I could not pay the tuition. She said that my tuition had been fully paid.I asked the registrar who paid for my tuition so that I could thank him.I was told that the kind person wanted to remain unknown.
I went to my classroom, but kept wondering who was the person that gave me the golden opportunity to continue my education.I went back to the head teacher’s office after classes and begged the registrar to tell me the name of the kind person. Finally,on the condition that I wouldn’t go and express the thanks, she told me that it was my English teacher,Olivia Balian.I promised that I would not talk to her.

W:One day,Murphy went to a doctor to talk about his wife.He said to the doctor,“Doctor,I think my wife is deaf because she never hears me the first time and I always have to say things again and again.”“Well,” the doctor answered,“go home and stand about 15 feet from her and say something to her.If she doesn’t answer, move about 5 feet closer and say it again.Keep doing this so that we’ll get an idea about how serious her deafness is.”
Sure enough,Murphy went home and did exactly as the doctor told him.He stood about 15 feet from his wife in the kitchen as she was cutting some vegetables and said,“Betty, what’s for dinner ” He heard no answer. He moved about 5 feet closer and asked again. No answer. He moved 5 feet closer.Still no answer. He got fed up and moved right behind her, about an inch away, and asked again,“Betty, what’s for dinner ” Betty said,“That’s the fourth time you asked me.They are meatballs.”

37.D 根据上文“you should make a list of things that you have to do...First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc.,then decide a good, regular time for studying.”
38.A 根据下文“Look around the house for a good study area...study materials.No games,radios,or television!”可知,本段主要讲要找一个利于学习的地方,才能集中精力,不受外界事物干扰。A项(找一个好的地方学习)是对本段内容的最佳概括。故选A项。
39.F 根据下文“Listening carefully in class means less work later.”可知,上课认真听讲能减少课后的工作量,F项(充分利用课堂时间去听老师说的一切)与其构成因果关系,且上下句语意一致,与本段小标题“Make good use of your time in class.”相呼应。故选F项。
40.B 根据上文“When you get home from school,go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day”可知,作者建议要预习第二天老师将要讲的知识点,B项(这将帮助你理解下一节课)与上文构成顺承关系,句中的“the next class”与上文“the next day”相呼应。故选B项。

第一节
Thursday September 1st Sunny
The Double Ninth Festival of this year witnessed our active participation in the voluntary activity.
As scheduled,we gathered at the school gate early, bringing our cleaning stuff and a willing heart. Then we marched to the nursing home, where we helped mop the floor, dust the furniture and clean the windows. We chatted with the senior, and also played chess, practised tai chi and made dumplings together with them happily. The highlight of the day,no doubt, was the gala, brought by the Music Club members, which is meaningful and joyful.
Not only do we learn that old people do need our company, but also we experience the happiness and significance of helping others. It is a rewarding day and will benefit us in the long run.
第二节
A year later,I came to the United States and finally received two Master’s degrees. However,I never forgot the kindness of Ms Balian.Almost 30 years later,I returned to Beirut and donated a total of $1.5 million to the school there. While handing the head teacher the donation,I advised him never to keep any student away from the school for lack of money, because one never knows what that student will become in the future if he or she continues receiving education.
After visiting my former high school,I really wanted to see Ms Balian and thank her for her generosity.Ms Balian had retired from teaching and lived in an apartment. When I found her place,Ms Balian was very happy to see me.Sitting next to her,I was finally able to thank her. However, she didn’t want to talk about it.I offered to assist her anyway possible, including financial help or special contributions for her devotion to education, but she refused all offers.Even though,I felt very happy because I was able to express my thanks after all those years.第三单元测评

(2023浙江杭州高一阶段练习)
The last thing Caitlin Hipp would have expected as she prepared to turn 28 years old was to be living at home with her parents. But through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server, she isn’t able to earn enough to live anywhere other than home.
To some degree, multigenerational households have always been a part of American life. However, the number of young adults who have been moving back in with their parents—or never leaving home in the first place—has been growing steadily.
UBS Financial Services released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adults still living at home could be that their family doesn’t want them to leave.
The report shows that 74 percent of millennials(千禧一代) get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. It finds that millennials have redefined the ties that connect parents and children.Millennials see their parents as peers(同龄人),friends and instructors.Nearly three quarters talked with their parents more than once a week during college. In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them.
Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Group in the US,said the number of young adults striking out on their own fell during the Great Recession.Although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, that doesn’t necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest.He said,“They may like living at home and being able to save money.”
“There’s no doubt that it has held back household formation and purchases of things people spend money on related to household formation and perhaps related to child-raising,” Hoffman explained.“But they are probably traveling more and eating out more if they don’t have a house expense or marriage.I don’t know if it represents a change in moral values. But it’s much more common for adult children to live in their parents’ homes because it’s becoming part of the culture.”
28.What can be learned about Caitlin Hipp
A.She is in her thirties. B.She is ambitious for her career.
C.She can barely make ends meet. D.She prefers living with her parents.
29.What’s the reason for young adults’ living at home according to UBS Financial Services
A.The lack of the job opportunity. B.Their parents’ need for them.
C.The high pressure from modern life. D.Their parents’ overprotection of them.
30.What does Hoffman think of young adults’ living at home
A.It will never go out of fashion. B.It may allow of more travel chances.
C.It results from the change in moral values. D.It goes against America’s cultural development.
31.What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A.To introduce different types of living arrangements.
B.To stress the importance of financial independence.
C.To inform people of a social phenomenon in the US.
D.To explain why Chinese young adults still live at home.
D
Nowadays, many parents are so busy that they seldom have family meals with their children. But this is wrong.
A Harvard study found that families that eat together are twice as likely to eat their five servings of fruit and vegetables a day as families who don’t eat together.Families also eat less fried food when they eat together. Finally, children who regularly eat with family have diets higher in fiber, calcium, iron, and vitamins B6,B12,C and E.
During family meals, parents can set a good example of healthy eating that children may follow. They also display polite table manners.Family meals teach children important skills.
When a family eats together, kids can learn about nutrition and healthy eating. In many studies of school-aged children, those who eat family meals have a higher level of nutrition knowledge.
When a family eats together, kids learn about food safety, like hand washing before eating.
Children who have company(陪伴) at meals are slimmer than those who eat alone. That’s because they eat less, eat more slowly, and talk more. This is a good way to deter obesity(肥胖) in children.
Family meals can help children build vocabulary.Studies showed kids who ate with their family performed better at school and had a broader vocabulary.Family meals offer an opportunity for conversations where kids learn vocabulary—building words to help them read and communicate better.
Children gain a better sense of belonging within the family when they eat together with their parents at home.Family meals offer a time for a family to come together as a group and develop a feeling of belonging. That sense of belonging leads to better self-esteem.
In conclusion, family meals are very important.
32.What’s the passage mainly about

(Text 7)
M:Mary, when we get out of the elevator, could you call the repair shop to ask if my car has been repaired I’m going into a meeting right away,so I don’t have time to call them.
W:Sure,Mr Walters.By the way,if your car’s still being repaired, how are you going to get to work tomorrow Is your wife going to take you
M:No,she goes in a different direction.

M:Well,I’m not sure.It will cost a lot of money and take a lot of time. Are you doing it just to fit in with everyone else
W:No,that’s not the reason.I think their houses look nice with gardens. And I think ours would look better, too.
M:Okay. If that’s how you feel,we can go down to the local garden centre and pick out some things. What kind of flowers would you like to plant I like yellow ones and purple ones.
W:I’m not quite sure.I’d like to look at some different kinds.I love pink,so I’d want to choose some flowers in that colour.I’m determined to make our home look pretty.
(Text 9)
M:Good evening.Do you have any rooms available at the moment
W:Yes,we do.How many nights do you want to stay
M:Four,if it’s possible.
W:Okay, let me see...I’m sorry, sir.I’m afraid we can only give you a room for two nights. It’s a very busy period right now. We’re almost fully booked these days.
M:All right.I’ll just stay for tonight, then. It’s too late to go to other hotels now.I’ll search for another one tomorrow.
W:That’s an excellent idea, sir. And thank you for your understanding. So,a single room for one night. Here is your key card, and your room is on the 7th floor.
M:Thanks.By the way,is there a swimming pool in the hotel
W:Yes,there is.It’s on the 15th floor. But it closes at 10:00 pm,so it was closed 45 minutes ago already.
M:That’s too bad.
W:We do have a gym that opens 24 hours. It’s on the 14th floor.
M:Great!Thanks for letting me know.
W:You’re welcome,sir.Oh,before I forget,breakfast is served on the 2nd floor from 6:30 to 10:00 in the morning.

写作
第一节
Dear Tom,
I am sorry to hear that you have conflicts with your parents. It is a truth that the relationship between a parent and a child is the most significant one in a person’s life. Therefore,we should learn to balance the relationship between parents and children.
There are some conductive suggestions.First and foremost,it is very important for parents to emphasize the significance of family time spent with their children.Besides,it would be beneficial if parents could pay attention to their children’s academic performance, friendship and extracurricular activities.Additionally,it is necessary that children should boost their awareness of communicating with their parents.
I hope you will find these advice practical.Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
Once in my bedroom,it looked so weak that it couldn’t open its eyes.Immediately,I wrapped a clean towel around the trembling puppy. Then I kept it warm by placing it on a thick rug. After feeding it food and milk,I gave it a shower.I was so glad to see the puppy recover. It was so lovely and I wanted to keep it.Looking at the black spots on its body,I had the perfect name for it!
The next morning,my parents came to know about the unexpected guest.“Can we keep Spotty ” I asked my mother eagerly. After discussing the situation with my parents,my father thought that it was a good idea and we decided to adopt him. That was how I came to have a pet. Now,the dog has become part of our family. We walk him in the park, play with him and take good care of him.In turn,he brings us happiness and keeps us company.
