You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Maybe your friends from middle school are going to a different high school. Even if you know other freshmen (新生), you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upper-classmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation (训练) before school actually starts. These are helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you also get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learned in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more after-school activities than middle school did, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Middle school taught you the basics of academics, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. High school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
4. According to the passage, when they come to the school on the first day freshmen usually feel ____.
A. proud B. nervous
C. excited D. afraid
5. What are freshmen probably worried about
A. The learning task. B. The ability to make friends.
C. The training in the freshman orientation. D. The relationship with teachers.
6. After-school activities mainly help students ____.
A. build up healthy bodies B. develop friendships
C. develop their interests D. improve their learning ability
7. The last paragraph is mainly about ____.
A. what you’ll learn in high school
B. what you leaned in middle school
C. the difference between middle school and high school
D. the importance of being more independent and responsible
C
People who like travelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view, especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.
Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations(文明), cultures, customs and ideas.
Through history, most people travelled because of necessity (必要性)—not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for the fun of it. In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity. They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon (地平线). Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures.
So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us. There is no doubt that we can get much from it.
8. According to the passage, in the past most people travelled .
A. for fun
B. for knowledge
C. to get experiences
D. to make a living
9. How many reasons for travelling are mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. Three.
B. Four.
C. Five.
D. Six.
10. In the writer’s opinion, travelling can be .
A. expensive
B. funny
C. helpful
D. tiring
11. What’s the main idea of this passage
A. Different kinds of travelling.
B. Travelling enriches our mind.
C. Ways to enjoy yourself while travelling.
D. The advantages and disadvantages of travelling.

I set out to change the lives of those who need help by joining my school’s newly formed Free The Children Club. Through the determination of friends, the group has grown bigger and stronger each year. Over the past two years my friend, Alex Auclair, and I have become the leaders of the club.
Already, after only two years of fundraising, we have accumulated over three thousand dollars and almost two thousand food items through various fundraising efforts. For example, each year a 24-hour famine (饥饿) is planned resulting in absolutely no consumption (消耗) of food. By taking part in these activities, we put ourselves in the shoes of someone living in poverty.
No money raised goes to waste. At the end of each school year, the group takes a vote to determine where our funds will be spent and donated. Last year, we bought enough desks, chairs, supplies and textbooks for every student in a Kenyan school. This year, we plan to spend our earning helping out families in Sierra Leone.
Poverty is a worldwide issue affecting the lives of people in not only developing countries, but also first-world countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan. Living in poverty can result in hunger, many forms of disease, lack of education, and for millions, death. It does not have to be this way. You too can form a club like the Free The Children Club or you can participate in events outside of school. Get your friends, family, even your community involved in fundraising. Do what you can to change the world.
12. An annual 24-hour famine is held to ________
A. help understand poor people better.
B. draw people’s attention to the club.
C. call on people not to waste food.
D. save food for hungry people.
13. How to spend the raised money is based on the opinion of ________.
A. the donators
B. the fundraisers
C. the club leaders
D. the majority of the club members
14. Why does the author write the text
A. To introduce the Free The Children Club.
B. To encourage people to change the world.
C. To present the serious outcomes of poverty.
D. To show how to help poor people live better.

Caleb's fingers slowly moved over the piano keys (钢琴键) as he searched for the next note. He'd only been taking lessons for a few weeks, and playing the piano was harder than it looked. This one, he thought as he pressed a white key. Wrong! He tried again. Oh, this one, he thought, pressing another key. Right!
"That song is challenging," said Mrs Lee, his piano teacher, when he finished playing. "But it sounds much better than it did last week! I can tell you've been practicing really hard. I think you can take a trip to the treasure chest (百宝箱)."
The treasure chest! Caleb's eyes turned to the big golden box in the corner of the room. It was filled with candy and other fun prizes. This would be Caleb's first trip to the treasure chest.
As Mrs Lee started to teach her next student, Caleb searched through the treasure chest. Should he take the dog stickers, or the orange gum Then he saw it — a green folder (文件夹). It was his favorite color, and he could use it to carry his drawings. He reached for it. But then he saw the fruit snacks (水果零食). They were strawberry, his favorite flavor. That would be a great prize too.
Folder or fruit snacks He could not decide which choice was better. Caleb knew his mom would be there soon to pick him up, but he still couldn't decide what to pick. The folder would be perfect for his drawings, but he could almost taste the fruit snacks.
His hand moved between the two prizes as he tried to make up his mind. Then Caleb had another thought. Maybe he could take both. Mrs Lee had so many prizes in the treasure chest that she would never notice. It wouldn't even be stealing (偷) only if he wouldn't take anything next time. That would be OK, wouldn't it
Caleb looked at Mrs Lee. She was busy helping her student. Quietly Caleb put the fruit snacks and the folder into his bag and went out of the room.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

6. After-school activities mainly help students ____.

C. develop their interests D. improve their learning ability

A. what you’ll learn in high school

【答案】One possible version:
But Caleb felt he did something wrong after a while. When he left Mrs Lee's piano room, he didn't feel good. By the time he reached the front door, he felt worse. He knew he did not feel good because of the bad choice he had made. He looked at the prizes. His problem wasn't folder or fruit snacks anymore. It was choosing the right or choosing the wrong. Caleb knew what he had to do.
Then he saw a car coming to him. That must be his mom's car. He opened the front door and waved to his mom. "Just a minute!" he called. He took out the green folder from his bag and went back to Mrs Lee's piano room. Apologizing for his stealing was hard, but he felt much better. Honesty turned out to be the best prize of all. He felt happy because he finally made a good choice by being honest.
