Dear Jennifer,
I am happy you would like to learn about the Dragon Boat Festival as it is one of my favourite festivals. It is a public holiday and an important festival in Chinese culture. It is held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
The Dragon Boat Festival has a long history. It was started in honour of the great poet Qu Yuan. He was also an important political figure in the state of Chu. He was wronged and sent away. He drowned himself in the Miluo River when the capital of his country was taken by the enemy state Qin. It is said that people raced in their boats to try to save him from the river and when they could not, they dropped balls of rice into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body.
One possible answer
Nowadays, we celebrate the festival in mamy different ways. For example, we hold dragon boat races and eat rice dumplings. It is a really fun festival! Maybe one day you can visit China and experience the festival for yourself.
Best wishes,
Lulu
