(2024·广东湛江·统考一模)As a doctoral student, I served as a hostess for famous authors and illustrators when they came to participate in the Ohio State University Children’s Literature Conference. I hosted such beloved creators of children’s books as Nikki Grimes, Jerry Pinkney and James Ransome. I would stand at the airport, holding one of their books and waiting to pick them up and then drive them around town to places they needed to go and assist them during autograph sessions. After graduating from my university and accepting a position at Clemson University in 2003, I kept in touch with James Ransome.
In 2005 I received a grant from the government to conduct a family-literacy program. I wanted to see what would happen when I exposed ten African American families with children to books by and about African Americans. I provided each of the families with copies of seven books, five of which were illustrated by James.
The families participated in a series of five monthly workshops, and the final event was a presentation by James and an autograph session with him. I believed this event would be a meaningful way to end the program, by having a famous illustrator of children’s literature come and talk about his work, especially because the families and I had read and responded to several of his books over the course of the five workshops.
James’s visit was informative and enlightening for the families. A parent, Ashley, told me that she sent a note to her son’s teacher about having participated in the program and loaned her son’s autographed copies of James’s books for the class to read. Looking back over my career, this family-literacy program is one of the accomplishments of which I am the proudest, and I am especially pleased that James was part of it.

(2024·甘肃平凉·校联考模拟预测)Ugandan student’s study and adaptation of traditional Chinese craft helps build bridges through art. With its balanced, rounded pot and cups, the tea set seems like Chinese ceramic (陶瓷) at first glance. But closer inspection of its pattern reveals an ancient Ugandan design. “My projects always aim to join some aspects of Chinese and Ugandan culture together,” says the tea set’s creator, Ocen Robert.
In 2015, Robert arrived in China from the East African nation to pursue a higher education in ceramic arts at Jingdezhen Ceramic University in East China’s Jiangxi province. (2024·吉林延边·统考一模)When Jenny Streete began caring for older people more than 50 years ago, prejudice was part of her everyday working life. Streete, who grew up in Jamaica and came to England in 1967, had a way of dealing with it: “Just put a smile on your face,” she says. “If you let bad words into your brain, it will only cause you more harm.”
The 81-year-old remembers one instance of abuse.
Streete says: “The sister who was managing the ward (病房) tried to calm a woman down. But I told the sister to let her say what she has to say. I don’t mind.”
The next night, Streete noticed the woman’s blanket had fallen off. She replaced it, telling the patient in a low voice exactly what she was doing and why. The same thing happened the next night, and the next. “But then, the night that I was off duty, that same woman asked the sister: ‘Where is that black lady I don’t want anyone else to look after me while she is on duty. She was so kind.’”
Brought up by her grandparents, Streete found her vocation after a mystery illness that nearly killed her, and left her with permanently damaged vision. She got better, she says, because of “loving care and tenderness”. When she came to England, she was determined to give that care to others.
And Streete hopes to carry on caring for older people as long as possible — although, she says, her children are urging her to retire. She currently works two nights a week in an end-of-life ward which provides specialist nursing. Many of the people she looks after are now a similar age to her.
Her preference for night shifts hasn’t changed, either. She frequently stays on after her shift is finished, to spend time with residents.
She urges those considering a career in care to think hard about why they’re choosing it. “Sometimes, people are not happy because they don’t want to do the job — they have to do it, because there is no other way. Wanting to do it is very different from having to do it.”
But the key quality a care worker needs, she says, is patience, “Some people like to do everything quick-quick-quick, but you have to take your time with residents. I just try to treat everybody the way I would like to be treated.”

What she had to say was simple—I was a follower with the potential of a leader, and what I needed was some new friends and some time to grow up. She suggested to my mother that I repeat the 7th grade. After a pout (噘嘴), a plea and a prayer, I made a deal, “give me the summer and I’ll show you!”

(2024·江西·校联考一模)Zing! Such is the sound of the towline (拖绳) as it flies from my grasp and the motorboat drags it away. It is also the end of my effort to stand on two blue boards and sail across a lake behind a speedboat. “I’ve had it, e get me!” I know he can’t hear me as he rockets off. Besides, I know what he will say—“It’s easy, sweetheart. Just stand up and let the boat do the rest.” Well, I’ve tried to follow his advice, but my shaky legs tell me it’s over. How did it come to this
My father determined that his group of teenagers should learn to water-ski. He knew little about it, but he saw others on the lake with fast crafts (船) and joyful skiers, and decided to join the fun.
On a hot day, he tied the rope and loaded us into life jackets. One by one, he pulled the boys to and from, waving to neighbors on their docks. Then it was the girls’ turn. I jumped in the lake, wore the two heavy skis, pointed them out of the water, and grasped the towline with trembling hands. I had no idea what to do. My father dismissed my fears with a wave of his hand. “Keep the tips up, sweetheart.”
It’s time to give up. But here comes my dad dragging the line, ready for me to try again. I signal that I am ready to get back in the boat, but he smiles and yells, “This time will be magic!”
Dad guns the engine. The weight of an entire lake is on my chest, pushing me back. Like a light switched on in a dark room, my father’s words show me the way. “Just stand up, angel. Just do it.” And so I did, even though I cried aloud.

(2024·陕西咸阳·统考一模)No one had called me Melissa in months. Hearing my name was something I took for granted before I was out of work. But now I wasn’t spending time with the people who know me as Melissa: my co-workers, fellow writers, and friends.

(2024·广东·模拟预测)When I was a child, my grandmother often said people and communication mattered. She backed that up with her own behavior. When she walked down the street, she would speak to everyone. It didn’t matter if you were an elderly person or a child, or if you spoke English or Spanish. She just smiled and talked to everyone.
However, as she aged, she noticed that her approach was becoming rare. She talked about how, in the age of technology, most people don’t think they have time for longer communications than text messages. In fact, people barely speak to one another nowadays. As much as I hated to admit it, I had noticed it too.
My grandmother’s wisdom inspired me to have a pen pal. It all started in 2013. I went to the University of Southern California to meet with Kerstin Zilm, who wanted to interview me about being a student struggling financially (经济上地). I didn’t know much about German culture or the German audience who would listen to the show, but I agreed to do so because I remembered my grandmother’s wisdom. I felt that speaking about my story was better than keeping it to myself. You never knew who could learn from your life experiences.
Soon after knowing my story from the show, a woman named Renate reached out to me, asking how she could help me financially with college. I was grateful that Renate wanted to help, but my pride didn’t allow me to accept money. Thinking of my grandmother’s wisdom, I didn’t let the communication stop. I emailed Renate back, thanking her for her kindness sincerely.
From then on, Renate and I often emailed each other. She even sent me gifts and cakes on my birthday. And whenever I was in trouble, she was always there. She sent me virtual (虚拟的) hugs at the moments when I needed them most. Though I have never met her in person, she is one of the most important people in my life. (2024·山西临汾·校联考模拟预测)Julia Whelan climbed into the double-walled, foam-insulated booth in her home office near Palm Springs, Calif. In preparation, she had stopped drinking alcohol the night before, had avoided dairy since waking at 6 a. m. and had run through the humming and vocalizing of her warm-up exercises. Her glass jar filled with water, her Vaseline lip therapy at hand, she was ready to work.
Whelan, 38, the comforting, confident female voice behind more than 400 audio-books, is so sought-after that six months’ notice is required. Once she has taken on a project, she reads through the book once or twice, deciding on themes to highlight when she gets into the recording booth by using different tones and accents, and emphasizing certain words. “Narrating a book really is a performance,” she said, “and it can be harder to do than acting, because I can’t use my eyes or facial expression to communicate something to the audience.”
Her narrating voice, slightly different from her regular speech, is crisp and low-pitched. There is no singsong, no up speak, “I have an absolute affection on her voice, with a detached but not uninterested tone that makes her a very persuasive storyteller. When I listen to Julia read my stories, it sounds like she is calling you over to tell you a great story.” said Olivia Nuzzi, New York magazine’s Washington correspondent.
Flynn, an American writer and film maker, decided against rereading the book Gone Girl, opting instead to listen to the narration when preparing to write the screenplay for the film adaptation. “Julia gave me the benefit of listening to Amy and seeing the world through her eyes,” Flynn said. Just before the pandemic, Whelan began her writing Thank You for Listening. She learned about her writing when she experienced it as a narrator. “There is something about it that changes when you’re performing it,” Whelan said, “I read the book out loud during every stage of its revisions but it’s different when you sit down and have the microphone in front of you. When I finally am inhabiting all the characters, the story comes to life.”

(2024·湖南岳阳·统考一模)How to release your art potential Traditionally. people may bury themselves in learning painting skills at a studio and begin from drawing lines. However, Maggie Wiebe, a 21-year-old girl from Stamps School of Art &Design at the University of Michigan, has her own method.
Wiebe and her school friend Jessie Rice are trying to do something that shows their love for art and also benefits the environment. For the past year or so, they have tended a garden at their campus farm, planting a variety of colorful flowers, as well as flax (亚麻) to make linen and paper to be used in art.
Inspired by a group of old ladies in Canada who plant sustainable art materials and post their videos on social platform YouTube, Wiebe learned about how to plant, harvest and separate fibers. She planted different fruits and vegetables traditionally used to dye (给……染色) fabrics. She then put their peels (外皮) into boiled water and added hot pressurized air to make a dye. For her, it’s a demanding but enjoyable process.
Wiebe and Rice plan to eventually buy some land in Detroit to grow these sustainable art materials—a dye, fiber and pigment garden— “a bigger version of what we’re already doing”, Wiebe told Minnesota News. “We’d set it up like an organization where artists can volunteer a few hours a week and then use all of the plants that we grow. ”
Wiebe also likes fiber-based art, such as quilting, weaving and sewing. She has applied those techniques to her recent works, displayed as part of the annual Senior Exhibition at her school. During her sophomore year, Wiebe joined the Michigan Daily as an illustrator, learning to conceptualize and complete complex illustrations on tight deadlines. Wiebe’s works received a lot of help from others. “Because the art school doesn’t have departments, we have studio coordinators who take care of each studio. “she said. “I see them every day, and they’ve helped me a lot. ”

(2024·湖南永州·统考二模)At 98, Dick Van Dyke still sings with his group, The Vantastix, and still makes it all look easy. When asked how important it is that he’s having fun when he’s doing it, Van Dyke replied, “My whole career has relied on that. It’s such a blessing to find a way of making a living that you love. I feel so sorry for people who hate their job. I look forward to going to work every morning!”
And some of his work helped define a generation. Take “The Dick Van Dyke Show”; it ran for five years on CBS, and it was such a hit that they’re bringing it back. This week, CBS aired a two-hour tribute (致敬), “Dick Van Dyke, 98 Years of Magic”, and for the occasion, they recreated the original Dick Van Dyke Show” set, down to that well-known sofa.
Early in his career Van Dyke was quoted as saying he only wanted to make films his children could watch. That got the attention of Walt Disney, who promptly cast him in “Mary Poppins”. And his next few films were equally family-friendly, like “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” which happened to have been co-written by James Bond creator Ian Fleming. From then on, Van Dyke was almost always assigned to play the good guy, though he claims to have missed out on a choice part: “Yeah, I could have been James Bond. When Sean Connery left, the producer said, ‘Would you like to be the next Bond ’ I said, ‘Have you heard my British accent ’ That’s a true story!”
It seems that in show biz the true legends never stop. In an interview from 2017 with his friends, Van Dyke described what it was like hitting 90: “People are more afraid of aging than they are of death these days. (2024·浙江杭州·学军中学校考模拟预测)I’m a walker, logging an average of 9000 steps a day several times a week around my neighborhood. On recent trips to Copenhagen and Stockholm, I noticed tall, fit Scandinavians (斯堪法尼亚人) walking along on city streets with poles, as if they were cross-country skiing without any snow.
It was a surprise to learn that the addition of the poles makes it a more vigorous, full-body exercise than simply walking – and, as a 76-year-old looking to stay healthy while enjoying the outdoors, I decided to give it a try.
There’s plenty of help online for the new Nordic (北 欧的 ) walker: stand tall, swing your arms out as if to shake hands, and plant your poles with vigour. Then there’s the little matter of the strap (带子) on the pole. This allows the walker to grip the pole when thrusting forward and then relax that hand as the other hand pushes forward – a skill of coordination that builds stronger muscles.
For a warm-up, I started slow: Nordic walking down the hall that extends from my front door to the deck. Keeping balance wasn’t my only problem. The novel use of my arms and upper body was surprisingly demanding. After half an hour, my heart was pounding and I was sweating, but I still wasn’t much good.
Still, I carried on because there’s no arguing with the exercise’s benefits. Nordic walkers’ upper-body exercise increases their heart rate significantly more than walking without poles. And according to cardiologist Dr Aaron Baggish, with poles “you’re engaging 80 to 90 per cent of your muscles.” It also helps people with Parkinson’s, says Burrill. “We put poles in their hands and it’s amazing because they start walking with real rhythm.”
After a few clumsy days of being convinced I would never succeed, suddenly everything clicked. Not only was I able to coordinate the movements, I was aware that my heart, arms and core were getting a workout. Nordic walking is a form of exercise I expect to enjoy for years to come.
57.What inspired the writer to try Nordic walking
A.Enjoying the outdoor skiing. B.Observing Scandinavians walking.
C.Getting tired of simple walking. D.Fancying a healthy lifestyle.
58.What was the main challenge for the author during the initial stages of Nordic walking
A.Building strong muscle in the arms.
B.Using arms and upper body harmoniously.
C.Sweating with heart pounding.
D.Feeling discouraged for lack of progress.
59.What does the author want to show by mentioning people with Parkinson’s
A.The great benefits of Nordic walking.
B.The wide practice of Nordic walking.
C.The urgency to promote Nordic walking.
D.The promising future of Nordic walking.
60.What is the author’s intention in writing this passage
A.To persuade readers to try Nordic walking for fun.
B.To share the experience of trying a new fitness activity.
C.To emphasize the great difficulties of Nordic walking.
D.To compare Nordic walking with simple walking.
