At a vast grape farm in Sadat City in Menoufia Province, north of Cairo, dozens of well-trained workers carefully harvest the grapes hanging beneath the green leaves.
In Egypt, the grape harvest season begins in May and ends in September. Grapes are one of the most widely-grow n fruit crops across the country, second only to citrus(柑橘). Egypt’s grape cultivation is spread geographically from Alexandria in the north to Aswan in the south, which enables the continuous supply of fresh grapes for the table.
Egypt has in recent years witnessed a notable increase in growing and exporting grapes for the table as the global demand for its high-quality fruit has been rising remarkably.
“We have exported to Europe table grapes of high quality since 2002,” said Mohammed Mostafa, technical manager of a family-owned company specializing in growing and exporting fruits and vegetables. He noted that his company exports 3,000-3,500 tons of table grapes to Europe annually, pointing out the amount has been increasing notably in recent years.
The grape-growing area in Egypt is about 840 square kilometers, with total production of about 1.7 million tons per year. Grape exports in Egypt hit 18,106 tons from January to the end of May this year, compared to 16,187 tons during the same period of last year, an increase of over 10 percent.
Meanwhile, Mostafa added that his company was one of the first exporters to take the lead in producing grapes in the south of Egypt, where the best varieties of grapes are currently grown.
“We have an organic approach towards all our production. Our farms are located in diverse places in Egypt to guarantee the best climate and continuous supply to our clients and European partners,” said Mostafa. He added that the government has been aiding grape growers in an attempt to encourage them and others to increase their crops for export.
The increase in grape farms in Egypt is not only a bonus for business owners, but also a source of a stable income for hundreds of workers who mainly live in nearby villages that had suffered from poverty before growing grapes.
24. What can be inferred from the second paragraph
A. The grape harvest season generally lasts six months.
B. Citrus is the most widely-grown kind of fruit in Egypt.
C. The best varieties of grapes are grown in Alexandria.
D. Buyers in Europe ensure Egypt’s stable supply of grapes.
25. What can we learn from Mohammed Mostafa’s words
A. Their grapes are grown organically.
B. His company once led grape production in Egypt.
C. Their grape exports average over 3,500 tons a year.
D. His company specializes merely in the export of fruits.
26. Why does the author write the last paragraph
A. To reveal that people living near grape farms were poor.
B. To show what benefits grape growers have brought to Egypt.
C. To explain why the government is helping grape growers expand.
D. To prove that growing grapes is an effective way to shake off poverty.
27. What would be a suitable title for this text
A. Grape Farms Are Springing Up in Egypt
B. Europe Is a Major Market for Egypt Table Grape Exports
C. Egypt’s Table Grape Exports Are Expected to Hit a Record High
D. Egypt’s Table Grape Exports Grow as Global Demand Increases

In the 20th century, Americans gave more than ever of their time, talent, and treasure for the public good. World and national events contributed some efforts. Advances in mass media(大众媒体) also helped spread the word. New technologies encouraged easier ways to give. Although wealthy people gave the most, many people found ways to pitch in.
The first organization to try fundraising directly from ordinary people to help fight disease was the American Lung Association. Working with the Red Cross, it started selling stamps in 1907 to help fight tuberculosis(肺结核).
In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called on Americans to give little amounts of money to help fight polio(小儿麻痹症). Roosevelt had become sick with the disease as an adult. He recovered, but for the rest of his life he could not stand up or walk. Roosevelt’s call to action became known as the March of Dimes. The White House was flooded with envelopes containing dimes(十分硬币). In 1946, six-year-old Donald Anderson became the first “poster child” for the group.
The growth of mass communication brought more mass appeals for giving to a larger group of people. With support from comedians Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, the Muscular Dystrophy Association held its first TV program in the 1950s. The tradition of using television to reach supporters continued through 2015.
Money wasn’t the only thing that people gave. The American Red Cross organized its first national blood collection in 1941. During World War Ⅱ, it collected more than 13 million pints of blood for use by the armed forces, After the war, it began running an annual blood donor program. People also gave their time. Some people packed packages for troops. Others volunteered at hospitals, nursing homes, kitchens and schools. Young people were especially encouraged to get involved.
When George H. W. Bush accepted the appointment of president in 1988, he compared America’s spirit of philanthropy(慈善事业) and volunteer service to “a thousand point s of light in a broad and peaceful sky”. Throughout the 20th century, millions of ordinary Americans gave hard-earned money, time, talent and other resources to make the country better for everyone. It’s a light that continues to shine today.
28. What can the underlined phrase “pitch in” in paragraph 1 be replaced by
A. Take off. B. Give in. C. Join in. D. Show off.
29. What did the March of Dimes raise money for
A. To support the army. B. To found the Red Cross.
C. To help a six-year-old boy. D. To fight against a disease.
30. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The armed forces’ blood donation.
B. The volunteers’ work at hospitals.
C. The American Red Cross’s contribution.
D. The various ways Americans give to charity.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards George H. W. Bush’s words
A. Agreeable. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Curious.

Drive down any US interstate and there’s a good chance you will see a pun(双关语) or a funny reference on the next electronic message board you spot. Known as dynamic message signs, they usually remind drivers about speed limits or traffic delays.
Operations Director Kyle Armstrong of the Illinois Department of Transportation explained unsafe drivers have made some of the state’s roads dangerous, and that funny messages are aimed at saving lives. “We have nearly 1,000 accidents on Illinois roadways a year, and we’re just looking for any way to get that number down to zero,” Armstrong said.
Mississippi officials, meanwhile, have been using social media to share safety messages with other states. One of their ideas referenced the Star Wars series The Mandalorian. It read: “BABY YODA USES THE FORCE BUT STILL NEEDS A CAR SEAT.” “If one kid got a car seat, or one parent decided to put their child in a car seat rather than in the front seat because of that sign, then we succeeded,” said Chris Turner at Mississippi Department of Transportation.
But a big question lingers(存留) around all of this: Do funny signs about seat belts or distracted(分心的) driving make a difference in changing behavior, or are they just another distraction for drivers
The Federal Highway Administration(FHWA) has surveyed thousands of people, and more than 80% of them said they understood the messages on highway signs. That’s true even when they have to think hard to get the joke. It also showed dynamic message signs pull the eye in, making drivers pay more attention to what they’re saying.
Kevin Biesty at the Arizona Department of Transportation admitted it’s hard to know if road signs are preventing crashes, but the bigger point is getting drivers to change their mindsets. “If you were to walk into a childcare facility today and smoke a cigarette, everybody in that room would look at you with horror,” Biesty reasoned. “We need to make it socially unacceptable for people to do things on the roadway that put everybody at risk.”
32. What’s the purpose of dynamic message signs according to Kyle Armstrong
A. To prevent as many road accidents as possible.
B. To warn drivers of unsafe road conditions.
C. To keep track of unsafe drivers.
D. To help make drivers relaxed.
33. What does the message inspired by the Star Wars series intend to convey
A. The consequence of disusing car seats. B. The risk of taking the front seat.
C. The importance of baby seats. D. The popularity of baby seats.
34. What does the survey of the FHWA show about dynamic message signs
A. They do catch drivers’ eye. B. They are hard to understand.
C. They play a joke on drivers. D. They improve drivers’ behavior.
35. What does Kevin Biesty think of dynamic message signs
A. They prevent car crashes greatly.
B. They make traffic rules widely acceptable.
C. They prevent drivers smoking on the highway.
D. They raise drivers’ awareness about road safety.

A review just 56 (publish) in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology questions whether white noise may be doing more harm than good.

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Walk. She was lovely, but she never liked her name as all the kids around her made fun of her name. Walk ran away from everybody who laughed at her name, so she never really had friends. She would play alone all the time.
One day, Walk went to her favorite place near the river behind her house, where she always talked to the river in her own way. She said to the river, “You are so fortunate, as you are able to travel to different places and always be with your friends—ducks, turtles, fishes, and plants. I wish I had more friends and wouldn’t be alone anymore.”
When she was bored with talking to the river, she picked up some stones and tried to skip(打水漂) them across the river like her dad did. However, she failed most of the time. Finally, she found a perfect stone. She held it tightly in her fingers, and said to the river, “Oh, dear river, if I could skip this stone all the way across, I would wish for a dear friend just like you.” Saying this, Walk waved her arm back just like her dad had taught her and threw the stone with full strength.
She watched the stone skip once, twice... and to her amazement, the stone went on skipping and eventually, on the seventh skip, made it across the river onto the shore of the opposite side. Walk was totally surprised. She could not just believe her eyes.
Her deep thoughts and happiness were disturbed when she heard footsteps coming towards her. Walk looked around and found a little girl was rolling down towards her. Walk panicked and hurried to get up to help. However, she lost her balance and fell off too.
The little girl was crying and holding her knee. Walk pulled herself and went close to the girl, whose knee was bleeding. She said gently to the little girl, “It will be alright. My house is nearby. Let me help you. My mother will take care of the wound.”

(Text 10)
I’m Grace Connolly and I’m just back from a fantastic trip to the South Island. I’d like to tell you all about it.
It was more beautiful than I’d expected. There are many ways to see it—you can hire a car and drive, or some people go around by motorbike—you can even see the island by boat, but I went on what’s known as the green bus.
So, what route did we take Well, we started in Nelson in the northwest of the island. Then we headed off down the west coast stopping at various places. After that I went to a place called Kaikoura. It’s on the coast and is famous for its sea life and also for being one of the most exciting places in the world to see ocean birds. To really experience the day you have to choose one of these trips. It was dolphins that I was keenest to see, but there were whales too. It was an absolutely amazing day.
But the highlight of the trip for me was boating at the place called Buller River. Every trip has some problems—I fell and hurt my shoulder while horse-riding on the beach. It wasn’t serious, so I didn’t need treatment. But then I actually had to go to the hospital after doing something to my foot—climbing over some rocks.
