六、阅读理解

Mark Strand, a former US poet who won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1999, has died in New York aged 80. Strand, whose works were translated into more than 30 languages, died at his daughter’s home on Saturday from liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
Absence and loss were recurring(再现) themes for the writer, who was known for his exact language and unreal imagery. One of his poems, Keeping Things Whole, begins with the stanza(押韵): “In a field. I am the absence of field.”
“This is always the case,” the poem continues. “Wherever I am I am what is missing.”
Born on Prince Edward Island in Canada, Strand grew up in various cities across the US and South America.
“Masterly” poetry—Sleeping With One Eye Open, his first collection, was published in 1964. Its title poem, he later made known, drew on the anxiety he felt at the height of America’s cold war with the Soviet Union.
His early work saw him characterized, unjustly in his eyes, as an unhappy poet buried in uncertainty and death. “I find them evenly lit,” he once said in reference to his poems’ apparent darkness.
Strand’s Pulitzer was awarded for his 1998 collection Blizzard of One, described as “masterly” by the New York Times. “Strand’s poems produce resonance(回声) with a lighting sense of the infinite,” the newspaper’s critic wrote. “Strand doesn’t approach the universal through the particular. He approaches the universal through the universal”.
In addition to writing and translating poetry, Strand wrote children’s books and art criticism and helped edit several poetry collections.
His daughter Jessica remembered him as “a funny, elegant, generous and brilliant man who lived to work and to be with his friends and the people he loved.”

John Keats was an English poet, whose poetry described the beauty of the natural world and art as the vehicle for his poetic imagination. Regarded as one of the English language’s most naturally gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagination, human nature, and philosophy. Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Besides, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.
Growing up as a young kid in London in a lower, middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to public school in Enfield, near his home. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who liked playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing away due to illness, he began to view life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.
At around the age of 16, John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his love for literature had taken too much of his time, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Edmund Spenser. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry that would be published, but was criticized sharply in Blackwood’s Magazine. However, it didn’t stop him.
John Keats’ next work to be published was Endymion, which he wrote in 1817 and was published in May 1818. The story tells a boy who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him to an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, he wrote Isabella. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all he learned. However, an attack of tuberculosis(肺结核) while visiting Italy kept him from his work and took his life in 1821.
