Theophilus Tetteh is an African contemporary artist from Ghana. He buried himself in the study of graphic design and painting at school while experimenting with different media themes.
Now we hear about African painters stepping into the spotlight, but it might be challenging for Ghanaian artists to bring their careers to commercial success and critical recognition. The art market as such is not yet established in Ghana. The country doesn’t even have a national gallery to preserve and promote Ghanaian art. It can be problematic for young painters who cannot afford to move to Europe or the US to promote and market their art. Besides, many young artists can even have trouble getting painting materials.
Things changed for Tetteh when he got featured in BE OPEN Art, an online gallery of contemporary art. It was founded by philanthropist Elena Baturina with a desire to provide emerging artists worldwide with an opportunity to show their works to the world of art professionals. The platform especially welcomes artists who don’t have resources or promotional opportunities such as graduates and self-taught artists.
In December 2020, Tetteh was voted the Artist of the Month by the visitors of the BE OPEN Art. Later, he was chosen as the gallery’s first-ever Artist of the Year. The award brought him favorable publicity, so he was noticed by the art community, the media, collectors, etc. In 2021, he was interviewed frequently by the media and featured in a famous magazine. All these things let the prices of the artist’s work inch upwards.
Tetteh thinks the world can be a better place if young artists are guided on their way without any form of disregard, but with support of the senior. As his name has hit headlines of the arts world media, he hopes to help promote emerging talents in his native country. “The art makes the man and the man makes the art,” he says.
4. What can we learn about Ghanaian artists from paragraphs 1-2
A. They tend to combine designs with media themes.
B. They have established an art market to promote works.
C. They desire professional guidance on preserving national art.
D. They lack a supportive platform to realize commercial value of their works.
5. Why does Elena Baturina establish BE OPEN Art
A. To promote ancient African art treasures.
B. To broaden the artistic vision of self-taught artists.
C. To provide chances for young artists to display artistic talents.
D. To sponsor a project for the contemporary emerging artists from Ghana.
6. What kind of person is Tetteh according to the last paragraph
A. Socially responsible. B. Amazingly talented.
C. Commercially smart. D. Culturally conservative.
7. Which of the following best describes Tetteh’s change of fate
A. All that glitters is not gold.
B. Opportunity favors the prepared.
C. The strong is not without tears.
D. A good name is easier lost than won.
C
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report. It stated that the world is quickly running out of time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, the level widely agreed to be the conservative, safety-first goal to prevent serious climate harm. To get there, the world would have to cut current emissions (排放物) by 45 percent by 2030. That sounds absurdly unlikely.
But before we give in to despair, we should remember that the technology to address climate change is going along at high speed. The largest source of US carbon emissions is transportation, and a Green New Deal program for motor vehicles would be quite straightforward.
The reason is simple: With some subsidies (补贴), electric cars and buses are cost- competitive with fossil-fuel vehicles. Electric buses have gone into the market at the greatest speed, because they are a logical choice for electrification. At the end of 2018, electric vehicles were displacing about 280,000 barrels of oil demand per day. That’s more than the whole consumption of Greece.
And the electric car market is also reaching maturity, with appealing designs, longer range, and a quickly-expanding rapid charging network in many countries. It’s worth emphasizing that most of the basic systems necessary to recharge electric vehicles already exist. People often tend to assume that we would need to replace every gas station, but virtually all homes and businesses already have an electrical connection which can be easily improved for fast charging. All that is needed to go fully electric is enough battery capacity and fast charging stations to deal with long trips.
Now America would have to repair its electricity production, rails, shipping, and so on to fully decarbonize (脱碳) the transportation sector. It will be considerably more difficult than simply rooting out fossil fuel vehicles from the market.
But greening America’s vehicles would be straightforward, relatively cheap, and a huge step forward on climate. The politics of climate change are so fearful that despair can seem logical, but the first step in achieving a tough goal is the firm belief that it can be done. And this particular step wouldn’t even be that tough.
8. What can we infer from the IPCC’s report
A. The world is suffering serious climate harm.
B. Global warming is growing out of our control.
C. We are too conservative to deal with global warming.
D. Cutting emissions is the easiest way to stop climate change.
9. How can electric vehicles compete with fossil-fuel ones
A. By running at the greatest speed.
B. By changing the way of transportation.
C. By making consumers have logical choices.
D. By getting financial support from governments.
10. What is people’s common misunderstanding about electric cars
A. They aren’t so efficient in reducing emissions.
B. There’s still much room for designing new ones.
C. There aren’t enough fast charging stations for them.
D. Home electrical connection can be used for charging them.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards greening America’s vehicles
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Uncaring.
D
ChatGPT is a new AI system that sounds so human in conversations that it could host its own radio programs. Reading between its instantly generated, perfectly grammatical lines, people see different visions of the future. Without doubt, ChatGPT is impressive.
Some compare the emergence of ChatGPT to the impact of the iPhone, but that doesn’t do it justice. ChatGPT, as well as the generative AI that will follow and outsmart it, is more disruptive. And yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the world is upon us. On the contrary, ChatGPT, I would argue, might serve to make us more aware of our irreplaceable human qualities.
Take the creative act, writing in particular, as an example. If you want it to, the AI-powered chatbot always produces something because it has the whole world of online data to draw from. But unlike us, it lacks the consciousness. Thinking is hard, critical thinking even harder, and ChatGPT isn’t good at either. It just restates what has already been said; it is one big recycling machine.
There is another obvious limitation of ChatGPT. Philosopher Harry Frankfurt once claimed: the difference between a bullshitter (胡说八道的人) and a liar is that the liar knows what the truth is but decides to take the opposite direction; a bullshitter, however, has no regard for the truth at all. The AI scholar Gary Marcus applies this distinction to ChatGPT. He believes that we have reached a critical point when “the price of bullshit reaches zero and people who want to spread misinformation, either politically or just to make a profit, start doing that plentifully”. Unfortunately, ChatGPT will reproduce misinformation from any of its input sources — it is not an intelligent system that tries to balance or weight different perspectives. In this sense, everything that ChatGPT writes is bullshit.
This is why the so-called AIQ is critical. It is actually an extension and a measurement of our human IQ: our overall knowledge of AI tools, our mastery of clues, and our ethical awareness. ChatGPT is going to change everything and nothing. Creativity, imagination and ethics — these will all remain unique human domains. It is the AI’s very limitations that will make us appreciate our own.
12. What can we learn about ChatGPT
A. It helps generate an artificial voice.
B. It provides instructions on writing skills.
C. It generates natural language responses.
D. It offers a service for language learning.
13. What does the underlined word “disruptive” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Evil. B. Comparable. C. Profitable. D. Revolutionary.
14. Why does the author consider ChatGPT as a bullshit generator
A. It makes up lies constantly.
B. It can’t tell right from wrong.
C. It often makes unfair judgement.
D. It always takes a neutral standpoint.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. ChatGPT Makes Us Human
B. ChatGPT Is Causing Panic Now
C. ChatGPT: Treat It Like a Toy, Not a Tool
D. ChatGPT: Why It Is Bound to Generate Bullshit

Cultivate (培养) Curiosity
Our brains are wired to draw conclusions and form judgments at lightning speed, and those are frequently the cause of our negative emotions. ___20___, but we tend to run with them, sparking the self-talk that follows.

A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Uncaring.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了大力推广电动汽车是减少二氧化碳排放、阻止全球变暖的主要方法之一。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“It stated that the world is quickly running out of time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, the level widely agreed to be the conservative, safety-first goal to prevent serious climate harm. To get there, the world would have to cut current emissions by 45 percent by 2030. That sounds absurdly unlikely. (报告指出,世界很快就没有时间将全球变暖控制在1.5摄氏度以下,这一水平被广泛认为是防止严重的气候危害的保守的、安全第一的目标。要实现这一目标,到2030年,世界必须将目前的排放量减少45%。这听起来不可思议)”可知,从IPCC的报告中可以推断出,全球变暖变得越来越超出人类的控制。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The reason is simple: With some subsidies (补贴), electric cars and buses are cost- competitive with fossil-fuel vehicles.(原因很简单:有了一些补贴,电动汽车和公共汽车与化石燃料汽车相比具有成本竞争力)”可知,通过获得政府的财政支持,电动汽车可以在成本上与化石燃料汽车竞争。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“People often tend to assume that we would need to replace every gas station, but virtually all homes and businesses already have an electrical connection which can be easily improved for fast charging.(人们往往认为我们需要更换每一个加油站,但实际上所有的家庭和企业都已经有了电气连接,可以很容易地改善快速充电)”可知,人们往往认为需要更换每一个加油站,所以人们对电动汽车的普遍误解是没有足够的快速充电站供他们使用。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“And the electric car market is also reaching maturity, with appealing designs, longer range, and a quickly-expanding rapid charging network in many countries.(电动汽车市场也正在走向成熟,其设计吸引人,续航里程更长,并在许多国家迅速扩大快速充电网络)”以及最后一段“But greening America’s vehicles would be straightforward, relatively cheap, and a huge step forward on climate.(但绿化美国的汽车将是直接的、相对便宜的,也是在气候问题上迈出的一大步)”可知,作者认为电动汽车市场正在走向成熟,电动汽车的优点很多,并且可以作为应对气候问题的方式,推测作者对于电动汽车持有积极的态度。故选C。

D It always takes a neutral standpoint.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. ChatGPT Makes Us Human
B. ChatGPT Is Causing Panic Now
C. ChatGPT: Treat It Like a Toy, Not a Tool
D. ChatGPT: Why It Is Bound to Generate Bullshit
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. A

根据第一段中的“ChatGPT is a new AI system that sounds so human in conversations that it could host its own radio programs.(ChatGPT是一个新的人工智能系统,在对话中听起来很像人,它可以主持自己的广播节目)”可知,ChatGPT在对话中听起来很像人。由此推知,它能够用非常自然的语言进行回答。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词前面一句“Some compare the emergence of ChatGPT to the impact of the iPhone, but that doesn’t do it justice.(有人将ChatGPT的出现比作iPhone的影响,但这并不公正)”和划线词后面的“And yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the world is upon us. On the contrary, ChatGPT, I would argue, might serve to make us more aware of our irreplaceable human qualities.(然而,这并不一定意味着世界末日即将来临。相反,我认为,ChatGPT可能会让我们更加意识到我们不可替代的人类品质)”可知,ChatGPT的出现所带来的影响比iPhone更大,它更加disruptive,这并不意味着世界毁灭,而是会让人类意识到自身不可替代的品质。由此推知,这里是说ChatGPT更具革命性,与revolutionary意思最接近。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Unfortunately, ChatGPT will reproduce misinformation from any of its input sources — it is not an intelligent system that tries to balance or weight different perspectives. In this sense, everything that ChatGPT writes is bullshit.(不幸的是,ChatGPT将从其任何输入来源复制错误信息——它不是一个试图平衡或权衡不同观点的智能系统。从这个意义上说,ChatGPT所写的一切都是胡说八道)”可知,ChatGPT只是复制各种来源的错误信息,而不会思考其中观点的正误,所以它是一个胡说八道生成器。由此推知,ChatGPT不能辨别是非。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,第二段中的最后一句“On the contrary, ChatGPT, I would argue, might serve to make us more aware of our irreplaceable human qualities.(相反,我认为,ChatGPT可能会让我们更加意识到我们不可替代的人类品质)”承上启下,引出接下来作者谈论的ChatGPT所具有的局限性,并根据最后一段中的“It is the AI’s very limitations that will make us appreciate our own.(正是人工智能的局限性让我们欣赏自己)”可知,这里对上文进行总结,讲述了人工智能的局限性让我们能够更好地意识到我们所具有的人性特点。由此可知,本文主要的论点是:ChatGPT让我们意识到我们人类身上不可替代的人性特点,A项“ChatGPT让我们彰显人性”最适合作本文标题。故选A。

One of the cores of emotional intelligence is self-regulation, an important skill in the workplace. Like any skill, mastery of emotional self-control requires intentionality and practice. ___16___.
Pause to Mentally Distance
When you notice your typical physiological experiences associated with strong negative emotion, what should you do Mentally step out of your immediate experience. Asking yourself any question, or imagining what you might look like to others right now, will do the trick. At that point, although still physiologically keyed up, you will be able to ask yourself, “What is the best course of action right now ” or “What advice would I give someone else who is in my shoes ” ___17___.
Take Control of Your Self-Talk
We’re frequently unaware of how much self-chatter is going on in the background of our minds. Such self-talk might not be in fully articulated (铰接式的) words or phrases, but instead little flashes of thought. Becoming aware of your self-talk can be difficult. Why is this an important skill to develop ___18___. To genuinely ease a strong negative emotion requires tackling the source by examining the underlying belief and how accurate, reasonable, or useful it is.
Seek Support from Partners
Ask others you trust to help you recognize when your emotions seem to be getting the best of you. ___19___. Agree on a gesture or word that might serve as a signal that your trusted individual wonders whether you’re riding the led-by-your-limbic-system train. Of course, there will be times they’re wrong. So, it’s important not to respond defensively when you get that signal. Reacting with anything other than gratitude ensures that your partner won’t take that risk again.
Cultivate (培养) Curiosity
Our brains are wired to draw conclusions and form judgments at lightning speed, and those are frequently the cause of our negative emotions. ___20___, but we tend to run with them, sparking the self-talk that follows. Generally working to be more curious about other people’s experiences, including their self-identified motives for their behavior, helps avoid making hasty judgments.
