Five years ago, Chinese skater Wu Dajing introduced himself to the skating world by winning a silver medal at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. At Pyeong Chang Olympics, Wu not only returned, but also made history.
On Feb 22th, 2018, Wu won the gold medal in the men’s short-track 500-metre race. He set a new world record with a time of 39.584 seconds. He also became the first Chinese man to take home an Olympic short-track gold medal. BBC said Wu’s win was “flawless”, because he was much faster than all of the other skaters.
“I didn’t give them a chance and I kept my speed from the start,” he told the media after the match.
But China’s short-track teams didn’t do well in general at the Games. Chinese skaters in the women’s 500 metres, 3000-metre relay and men’s 1500 metres all failed to take home the gold. Wu was China’s biggest hope, which put a lot of pressure on him. But he proved himself with his great performance.
Wu is now known as a highly talented skater. But things were not always that way. When Wu joined the national team in 2010, he was seen as almost “nothing” compared to gifted skaters like Zhou Yang and Fan Kexin, as his coaches said at the time. Their comments made him quite upset. But as the saying goes. “Winners never quit (放弃) and quitters never win”. Wu didn’t want to give up and worked as hard as he could. He practiced skating all year round. He even didn’t return to his hometown for the holidays for 10 years. “I believe in myself.” he told the media after his match at the Olympics.

Tsunamis are one of the most terrifying natural phenomena that the world suffers. The series of waves generated by the displacement (位移) of a large volume of water can be caused by several events, including earthquakes, underwater explosions and landslides. Once triggered (引发), a tsunami can hit the coast within minutes and its destructive power can be enormous.
At present, early warning systems rely on measuring the movement of dart buoys (浮标), which record changes in the sea level, or assessing the bottom water pressure of the developing tsunami. But they require the tsunami to physically reach the measurement location. The buoys could be fixed in the deep ocean, but this requires an unrealistically big number of buoys. Or people can fix the buoys along the shoreline, but due to the high speed of the tsunami, this method may leave no warning time for people on the land.
Instead, there is a new system — using sound waves to predict tsunamis. Sound waves caused by an earthquake can travel much faster than the tsunami that has been triggered. Using standard underwater microphones, we can record these sound waves long before the tsunami arrives regardless of the direction in which the tsunami will travel. The sound signals come from changes in pressure, so what we actually analyze is a series of data on how the pressure is changing over time. Though buoys also show changes in pressure, the tsunami front must actually reach the buoys to inform us that there is an increase in the water surface. By using underwater microphones, however, we only need to catch the sound signals.
Though the idea of using sound waves to predict tsunamis has been put forward previously, the key to our idea is a new mathematical method that can be used to analyze these recorded sound signals in near real-time. Once this is worked out, we can not only warn people of a tsunami but also more accurately estimate its size long before it reaches the shoreline.
28.From Paragraph 1, we know ______.
A.what can trigger off tsunamis B.how to predict tsunamis effectively
C.why tsunamis are the worst natural disaster D.how to protect the coastal areas from tsunamis
29.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.The dart buoys. B.The changes in the sea level.
C.The changes in water pressure. D.The present early warning systems.
30.What can we infer about the new warning system from Paragraph 3
A.It has high accuracy. B.It can increase warning time.
C.It can monitor changeable sea levels. D.It can adapt to various water wave conditions.
31.In which column of a newspaper may the passage appear
A.Survival Stories. B.Disaster Rescue.
C.Scientific Invention. D.Natural Environment.

本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍的是一种利用声波来预测海啸的新的方法。
【详情解析】
28.细节理解题。根据第一段的“The series of waves generated by the displacement (位移) of a large volume of water can be caused by several events, including earthquakes, underwater explosions and landslides.(由大量水的位移产生的一系列波浪可能由几种事件引起,包括地震、水下爆炸和山体滑坡。)”可知,从第一段,我们知道什么会引发海啸。故选A。
29.词句猜测题。根据第二段“At present, early warning systems rely on measuring the movement of dart buoys (浮标), which record changes in the sea level, or assessing the bottom water pressure of the developing tsunami. But they require the tsunami to physically reach the measurement location.(目前,早期预警系统依赖于测量记录海平面变化的浮标的运动,或者评估正在形成的海啸的底部水压。但它们需要海啸到达测量地点。)”可知,they指代的是现有的早期预警系统,故选D。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“Using standard underwater microphones, we can record these sound waves long before the tsunami arrives regardless of the direction in which the tsunami will travel.(使用标准的水下麦克风,我们可以在海啸到来之前很久就记录下这些声波,而不管海啸将向哪个方向移动。)”可知,新的警告系统可以增加预警时间。故选B。
31.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第三段“Instead, there is a new system — using sound waves to predict tsunamis. Sound waves caused by an earthquake can travel much faster than the tsunami that has been triggered. Using standard underwater microphones, we can record these sound waves long before the tsunami arrives regardless of the direction in which the tsunami will travel.(取而代之的是一种新的系统——利用声波来预测海啸。地震引起的声波传播速度比引发的海啸快得多。使用标准的水下麦克风,我们可以在海啸到来之前很久就记录下这些声波,而不管海啸将向哪个方向移动。)”可知,本文主要介绍的是一种利用声波来预测海啸的新的方法,因此可以出现在报纸的灾难救援栏目。故选B。
D
Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters.
The earthquake of 26 December 2004 resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive (大规模的) underwater quake and occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction (破坏) to many people. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world collect money to help them.
The surface of the Earth has not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously although very slowly and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes, when one section of the Earth crashes with another. Scientists can predict (预测) where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line. However, earthquakes do not always happen on fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable.
All the disasters are very dangerous and continue to kill thousands of people each year, but they are nowhere near the most dangerous disaster to ever happen on earth. One type of event in the earth’s history has regularly killed millions of beings: asteroid impacts (小行星撞击). About once every million years the Earth is hit by a piece of rock and ice from space large enough to cause massive destruction (including earthquakes, volcanoes and ice ages) and sometimes to kill entire species. Sixty-five million years ago more than half the earth’s species were killed by such a disaster, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space.
32.What did the Indian Ocean earthquake cause
A.A hurricane. B.A typhoon. C.A volcanic eruption. D.A tsunami.
33.What can scientists predict about earthquakes
A.The possible time. B.The possible place.
C.The possible damage. D.The possible frequency.
34.Where will the most dangerous natural disaster come from according to the author
A.The ocean. B.The poles.
C.Outer space. D.Deep under the surface.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.How natural disasters happened
B.Where natural disasters happened most
C.When people should avoid natural disasters
D.What kind of natural disasters are most destructive
【参考答案】

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面 )”. Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it ” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.

【参考答案】
Then Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Catherine that the pecking order worked in school, too. Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s time for me to make an apology to Landy.” Catherine thought to herself. No sooner had she made up her mind than she announced it to the cool kids surrounding her. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti Are you crazy ”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, regardless of what they said. “Hi, Landy. I’m sorry about the spaghetti thing.” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening. “I know it hurts you. Can you forgive us ” She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also gained an important life lesson that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.

A.How natural disasters happened
B.Where natural disasters happened most
C.When people should avoid natural disasters
D.What kind of natural disasters are most destructive
