His first successful fight was for the equal rights of black people in South Africa. Then, as the first black president, he fought to unite the country and organize the government. After that Nelson Mandela set his sights on a new enemy, AIDS.
On March 19 the former president, hosted his second AIDS-awareness concert. He warned that 25 million people in Africa were already infected with the fatal disease.
Mandela was born in a small village in South Africa in 1918. He was adopted by the chief of his tribe and could have been a chief himself and lived a happy country life.
But he refused to be a chief when his people lived under racial discrimination (歧视). He decided to fight for equal rights for all the people in South Africa. Before 1990, under the country's Racial Segregation Law, coloured people and white people lived separately. Black people were treated unfairly even when taking a bus. Blacks had to stand at the back of the bus to make room for white people even when there were only a few of them on board.
For his opposition to the system, Mandela was arrested and spent 27 years in prison. He was freed in 1990 and became the president of the country after the first election was held in which everyone could vote.
Mandela was not only a political fighter who attacked with speeches. He was also a trained boxer and fought in the ring when he was young.
“Although I did not enjoy the violence of boxing, I was interested in how one moved one's body to protect oneself, how one used a strategy both to attack and retreat,” he wrote in his autobiography.
As a skillful fighter, he chose music as his weapon against AIDS. He hoped to win another victory against AIDS.

John Coltrane was born in North Carolina in 1926 and raised in the small farm town of High Point. As a young boy, he spent a great deal of time listening to the music of the black Southern church. Coltrane's father sewed clothes and could also play several musical instruments for his own enjoyment. The young Coltrane grew up in such a musical environment. And he discovered jazz by listening to the recordings of such jazz greats as Count Basie and Lester Young.
When John was thirteen, he asked his mother to buy him a saxophone. People realized almost immediately that the young man could play the instrument very well. John learned by listening to the recordings of the great jazz saxophone players, Johnny Hodges and Charlie Parker.
In 1943 John and his family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied music for a short time at the Granoff Studios and at the Ornstein School of Music. He served for a year in a Navy band in Hawaii. When he returned, he began playing the saxophone in several small bands.
In 1948, Coltrane joined trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie's band. Seven years later, Coltrane joined the jazz group of another trumpet player, Miles Davis. Then he began experimenting with new ways to write and perform jazz music, and explored many new ways of playing the saxophone. Some people did not like this new sound, while others said it was an expression of modern soul and represented an important change. By 1965, Coltrane became one of the most famous jazz musicians in the world. He was famous in Europe and Japan, as well as in the United States. He was always trying to produce a sound that no one had produced before. Some of the sounds he made were beautiful. Others were like loud screams. Miles Davis said Coltrane was the loudest, fastest saxophone player that ever lived.

Junelle Lynch knocked on more than 200 doors in the Gayln Manor neighbourhood of Brunswick in recent weeks. Her aim is to collect hundreds of pounds of food for the Brunswick Food Bank.
“I like helping people a lot,” said Junelle, who celebrated her 11th birthday in June.
With the support of her parents Isabella and Robert, Junelle walked along the streets with an orange grocery bag(杂货袋). Isabella always accompanies her daughter. Isabella helps her daughter by car, so Junelle can empty her grocery bag when it becomes heavy. Junelle's friend, Destiny Williams, helped the first night, but he didn't turn up the rest of the time.
Neighbour Lynda Mallory donated food to Junelle. Mallory dropped noodles, canned soup, vegetables and fruits into Junelle's bag. After visiting the last house and looking at what she collected, Junelle said she felt good about what she achieved with the help of her neighbours.
Working an hour a night three times per week, she has collected more than 400 pounds of canned and boxed food. This isn't the first year she's collected food. Junelle started nearly three years ago when, at 8 years old, she saw a collection box at a grocery store and decided to become involved. In her first year, she collected 80 pounds of food in the mostly undeveloped neighbourhood, and 214 pounds the next year. The food helped feed many families.
When she isn't helping, Junelle is a straight A student who goes snowboarding, plays the trumpet, sings with the Brunswick Chorus, plays basketball and writes poems. She plans on spending her summer vacation attending a basketball camp.

单元总结提升Unit 5 Nelson Mandela—a modern heroUnit 5 Nelson Mandela—a modern hero Unit 5 | Nelson Mandela—a modern hero单元话题导入导读:曼德拉曾在牢中服刑27年,在其40年的政治生涯中获得了超过一百项奖项,其中最显著的是1993年的诺贝尔和平奖。他是南非首位黑人总统,被尊称为“南非国父”,而且是一位当代英雄。
Nelson Mandela: several things you didn't know
Unit 5 | Nelson Mandela—a modern hero Nelson Mandela was an international figure, and many details of his life and career were public knowledge. But here are several things you may not have known about the late South African leader.
★His original name was not Nelson.
Rolihlahla Mandela was nine years old when a teacher gave him an English name—Nelson—according to the custom to give all school children Christian names. This was common practice in South Africa and in other parts of the continent, where a person could often be given an English name that foreigners would find easier to pronounce.Unit 5 | Nelson Mandela—a modern hero ★He was a boxing fan.
In his youth, Nelson Mandela enjoyed boxing and long-distance running. Even during the 27 years he spent in prison, he would exercise every morning.
“I did not enjoy the violence of boxing so much as the science of it,” he wrote in his autobiography(自传)Long Walk to Freedom. In the Mandela Family Museum in Soweto, visitors can find the world championship belt given to Mandela by American boxer Sugar Ray Leonard.Unit 5 | Nelson Mandela—a modern hero ★He forgot his glasses when he was released from prison.
Mr Mandela's release on 11 February 1990 followed years of political pressure against apartheid(种族隔离政策). Mr Mandela's reading glasses stayed behind in prison when Mr Mandela and his then-wife Winnie were taken to the centre of Cape Town to address a huge and excited crowd. But when he pulled out the text of his speech, he realised he had forgotten his glasses and had to borrow his wife's.Unit 5 | Nelson Mandela—a modern hero ★He had his own law firm, but it took him years to get a law degree.
Mr Mandela studied law on and off for 50 years from 1939, failing about half the courses he took.
A two-year diploma(毕业文凭) in law on top of his university degree allowed him to practise, and in August 1952, he and Oliver Tambo set up South Africa's firstly black law firm, Mandela and Tambo, in Johannesburg. He finally got a law degree while in prison in 1989.Unit 5 | Nelson Mandela—a modern heroTask:Fill in the blanks with no more than 3 words according to the passage.

Ⅲ.阅读理解
My grandmother Adele loved culture and was generous with its gifts. When I was a child, she took me to museums, restaurants, dances. She showered me with gifts from her travels around the world. But I can only remember her giving me one book—a book that, to this day, I have not read. She presented me with her own favourite childhood book: Hans Brinker. My grandmother was happy to share this book with me. She even decorated the title page with her proud writing.
I tried to read it. I adored reading, and would dive into a new pile of books from the library all at once. But something about Hans Brinker just wouldn't let me in. The story was set in Holland, a long time ago. It felt dull and unfamiliar—even though I was a fan of classics of other times and places. I simply read the first pages over and over. I could not progress.
Standing on a bookshelf in our living room, the book was like something I avoided. It scolded me for not being interested, for not trying hard enough, for disappointing my grandmother.
The book started to fit in, almost forgotten, until Adele asked. Had I read it? Did I like it? Always determined, she wanted to know the answer. I would make some kind of excuse, feel bad, and open it again, hoping for a new reaction. The_book_weighed_on_me.
Years passed and finally Adele and I both accepted that I would never read Hans Brinker. Eventually I cleared the book from the shelf. The Hans Brinker experience led me to set a rule that I've lived by ever since: do not ask about a book given as a gift. Don't ask, despite your desire to discuss it to grow closer. The desire for such connection is what gives book-giving with special meaning—and increases the owner's possibility to be a let-down.
Guilt is basically the same as for all gifts, though. If the giver doesn't have the pleasure of seeing or hearing about the gift being enjoyed, and asks whether it is, then the owner—unless she can truthfully say “yes”—either has to admit to not liking the present, or else lie on the spot. Neither is pleasant. So, don't ask.

A.took him to travel around the world a lot
B.loved to take him to museums and stores

A.Boring. B.Interesting.

In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl going to Howard University, aiming at a law career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different story to tell.
My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to leave college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a mix of adopted (收养) and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To put eyes on him was wonderful—and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy then followed son No.3 in 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8. Our home was a complete zoo—a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each term.
The hardest part was feeling sorry about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to give up, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.
In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you are looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you are in the middle of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won't arrive in your life on one day. It's a process (过程). Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.

I had a lot of teachers that I loved. However, the teacher that I remember most was Mrs Green from Marianna, Florida. She was my 5th grade teacher. Since I was a new student, not only in her class, but at the school, she made my time there much more pleasant. I immediately began to like her. She was really funny and I knew that she liked me. She made learning fun. I remember one day for Christmas holidays, she taught us how to make ornaments (装饰物) from eggs. My parents still have some of the ornaments I made.
She made me leader for many group projects and that made me feel special. I think that would make any child feel special, especially when a child is in a new place with no friends. She made me want to be like that. Not to pick a “favourite” student, but to make every student feel that they are special. That year, I received the Presidential Academic Award (美国总统学术奖). I was really proud and so were my parents.
Looking back at it, I think the reason why I did so well was that I felt important. Students do better when they feel like they are important or loved. Mrs Green always gets to know her students and forms personal relationships with them, which I will try to do some day. I just hope that there will be a student who finds me to be their favourite teacher as I found her to be mine.
5. The author's life in the new school was very ________.
A.hard B.happy
C.common D.boring
6.What can we learn from the second paragraph?

C.Become a leader. D.Become the President.
8.How does the author feel about Mrs Green's help?
A.Sorry. B.Afraid.
C.Hopeful. D.Thankful.

People of all ages have their own blogs. For young people, they are a way to show their writing and other forms of self-expression. Blogs also connect people with other people who have the same interests. For example, teachers use blogs to share ideas with other teachers, as well as experience and concerns about their work.
YouTube is another Internet site that became more popular. This website lets anyone create, share and watch short videos. These include videos of people singing or dancing, or animals doing funny things. Three young men created YouTube in 2005 as a personal video sharing service. In 2006 they sold it to Google for more than one and a half billion dollars.
Games and entertainment also became a larger part of the Internet. One Internet social site is called Second Life. It is an online world in which computer users create a new self and live a different life. They get married, build homes, operate businesses, buy and sell goods, work, play and attend school.
People also take part in fantasy sports leagues with the help of the Internet. A fantasy sport is a game in which each member of a group acts as the owner of a team. Each owner creates a team of real-life professional players to compete against other teams in the league. More than fifteen million American adults play fantasy sports. The industry earns more than one billion dollars each year from publications, memberships and other costs.
