My wife and I used to feel that it was impossible to be a true friend to someone whose name we didn't know. How wrong we were! Years of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with the same group of “nameless” people have changed our thinking.
Before the bus takes off, we all join in a conversation: Where's the silent woman who sits up front and never responds to our cheery greetings? Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesn't have much money to spare, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.
We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the bus hand in hand. When they get off, they're still holding hands. The woman was pregnant late last year, and one day her change of shape confirmed that she'd delivered the child. We even felt a little pride at the thought of our extended family.
For many months, our only sadness lay in our inability to establish the same friendship with the silent woman at the front of the bus. Then, one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It was the woman from the bus.
We greeted her with friendly familiarity we'd shown all year, but this time her face softened, and then a shy smile. When she spoke, the words escaped awkwardly from her lips. All at once we realized why she hadn't spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.
Over dinner, we learned the situation of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home. She missed him desperately, she explained.
“I love him… and he loves me, even though he doesn't express it very well,” she murmured. “Lots of us have that problem, don't we? We don't say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And that's not good enough.”
The candles flared on our tables. Our fish had never tasted better. But the atmosphere grew pleasant, and when we parted as friends—we shared names.

The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music programme, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (团伙). Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds self-confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practise performing in front of an audience. Music gives children an opportunity for self-expression, and that helps develop their self-confidence.
Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.
5.According to the passage, music could make students smarter by ________.
A.improving their classroom skills and paying attention
B.improving their classroom skills and imagination

A.give children self-expression and self-confidence
B.bring children achievement and success
C.give children something to be proud of
D.develop children's self-confidence
8.What's the best title of this passage?
A.Music is a must as a course at school
B.Music builds children's self-confidence
C.Music makes students much smarter
D.Learning music and making music

As for older people, some of the applications(应用程序)are hard to use because they didn't grow up with them. They don't have simple models of how it should work. They don't know what to do when it doesn't work.
I think there is huge potential, so I have designed some for them. The ability to connect with friends, who remember the same movies, news and music, is really important, especially as people get older. They end up in retirement homes and they aren't always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family members is a really powerful thing.
My wife likes using the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail. She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was three years old. She was totally deaf for many years until 53 when she got ear implants(移植).They work really well. That is a big change for her. Before then, her friends couldn't call her on the phone, so they insisted that she use e-mails to communicate with them.
The younger people don't even think of this as technology. It's just there, and they use it.There's been a very interesting change in communication styles between the old and the young. A woman named Sharry Turkle wrote about this phenomenon(现象).There are some kids who are now in their teens and are tending not to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow.
The reason why teens don't make phone calls seems to be that they don't know what to say. When they call they often pause for a while. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it's OK if you don't answer. You might have been distracted(心烦意乱的).It's not considered rude, but it's considered unusual if you're in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.
9.We can infer from the text that the author is a ________.
A.company manger B.program designer
C.college professor D.family doctor
10. Why did the author's wife connect with others by e-mail? Because she________.
A.didn't like to talk on the phone
B.didn't know how to use the phone
C.couldn't move or meet with her friends
D.was deaf and couldn't hear others on the phone
11.What do the young people think of the Internet according to the text?
A.Interesting. B.Amazing.
C.Common. D.Dull.
12.What is the best way for the teens to communicate with others?
A.Sending e-mail. B.Making phone call.
C.Writing letters. D.Sending text messages.
D
Sometimes two very different individuals(个体) become the best friends. For example, who could have thought that a spider would become friends with a pig? But in American writer E.B. White' novel Charlotte's Web, this is exactly what happens.
Wilbur the pig grows up in a barn(谷仓) and makes many friends, including a spider called Charlotte. One day a sheep tells Wilbur that he will finally be served up as dinner. But Charlotte decides to save her friend. To help Wilbur,Charlotte writes words like “terrific”, “radiant” and “humble” on her web to praise Wilbur. This makes the farmer believe that is too important to kill. Wilbur is saved, but Charlotte is so tired that she dies.
The book was first published in 1952. In over 60 years Charlotte has become one of the most famous spiders of all time. She teaches us about love and promise. “She is very, very loving under that crusty(暴躁),that ugly look,” Peter Neumeyer, writer of The Annotated Charlotte's Web.
The book's success drew the attention of Hollywood film-makers, however, they wanted a happier ending. White was strongly against this idea and as a result the film, like the book, ends with Charlotte's death.
Jen Doll, reporter with The Atlantic, believes that “Death is a part of life.” She says this is one of the main messages of the book.
As Charlotte tells Wilbur, “You have been my friend. That in itself is a wonderful thing. I wove(纺织)my webs for you because I like you. After all, what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while and then we die. A spider's life can't help being something of a mess(杂乱), with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a little. God knows anyone's life can stand a little of that.”
13.Which of the following about the story is TRUE?
A.It's a good example of how differences make us different.
B.It encourages children to love their family and friends.
C.The farmer kills Wilbur as dinner.
D.Charlotte is loving and helpful although she is ugly.
14.What is the disagreement about Charlotte's Web between Hollywood film-maker and White?
A.How Charlotte makes friends with Wilbur.
B.How to make Charlotte lovely.
C.Whether Charlotte should die.
D.Whether Wilbur should be killed.
15.In the last paragraph, Charlotte's main message is that ________.
A.life could be boring and troublesome
B.friendship is more important than life
C.dying for a good cause is worthwhile(值得的)
D.life is like a web

故用“Friends of the road”比较贴切。A项“公交车上的安静女士”太片面;C项“坐公交车去上班”在文章中没有提到;D项“不同种类的友谊”不合题意。故选B项。
2.C 细节理解题。根据文章第二段的“…Where's the silent woman who sits up front…”可知,这位女士很安静,故排除D项;根据第二段的“Her worn clothing suggests she doesn't have much money to spare…”可知,这位女士很穷,故排除A项;根据第二段的“…but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.”可知这位女士是热心肠的,故排除B项。故选C项。

Dear_Chen_Li,_
I'm_glad_to_hear_from_you._You_asked_me_about_the_difficulties_you_may_meet_with_when_you_get_here_in_the_UK. Now, I'd like to tell you something about it.
First, you may have the problem about the language which you think you are well prepared. You may find it difficult to communicate with the natives, because many of them have a strong accent. Besides, you may not get used to the western food here or even hate to have it. What's more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning.
However, you needn't worry about it. Several weeks later, you will get used to everything here and love the place, and I'll also try my best to help you when necessary.
Best wishes!
Yours,_
Li_Hua
