Mary Dickins had been a member of the audience at poetry nights before and knew “the poetry clap”. She made a polite tapping of fingers. But when she made her debut (首次演出) as a performer at the age of 62 at the legendary Bang Said the Gun night in south London, she said, “It was so wild — like nothing I had ever seen before.” The audience stamped their feet and shook shakers. “It felt transformative. I thought, ‘I’ve got to have more of this,’ ” Dickins said. Becoming a performance poet has given her a place on a stage of her own making.
All her life she has written, mostly without being seen or heard. Her mother died when she was nine, and, after she went into a care home at 13, Dickins’ writing stayed in notebooks. Really, she says, a lot of her adult life has been about getting over childhood shyness. At university — she studied education — she met her husband of 40 years, but in three years of seminars she did not say a word. Some of this results from her years at the children’s home. She says, “It gave me a sense of what it’s like to be excluded. I never fitted in anywhere.”
After she graduated, she discovered that she loved working with people with learning disabilities. She became an expert in inclusive education. “That was my niche (称心的职业),” she says. She published books and returned to the University of North London as a senior lecturer in early childhood studies.
Dickins now sees that in adulthood she has been giving herself permission to be silly. “The sillier I allow myself to be, the better the writing is,” she says. Her observations are humorous.
“Putting things into words and giving shape to your emotions is an important part of coming to terms with the things that happen in life,” she says.
Does she still feel like an outsider
“I think I’ve made it into a virtue. I celebrate the fact that I don’t fit into a box. Finally! You have to wait till you’re 62 to feel confident!” she says. “But I have a sense of who I am and I'm proud of it. I wouldn’t be anyone else now — and it took me a long time to say that.”
4.How did Dickins feel about her debut
A. Calm. B. Awkward. C. Stressed. D. Encouraged.

D. Her difficult relationship with her husband.
6.How does writing benefit Dickins
A. It makes her land a good job.
B. It sharpens her sense of humor.
C. It enables her to get on well with her life.
D. It helps her overcome her learning disabilities.
7.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Mary Dickins’ New Start after 60
B. Mary Dickins’ First Performance
C. Mary Dickins’ Troubled Writing Career
D. Mary Dickins’ Impact on Performance Poets
Officials of Detroit, Michigan, have equipped apiece of road with new technology designed to charge electric vehicles (EVs) on the path. The roadway is meant to serve as a demonstration project for the technology, which could be expanded to larger road systems.
The system uses a series of copper wires placed underneath the road. These wires have the ability to send electricity through a magnetic field to charge an EV’s battery. Charging can happen while the car is driving or sitting above the equipment. Elect re on says the electric road system is safe for people and animals walking over it and does not harm drivers.
The technology was created by Electreon, a developer of wireless charging solutions for EVs. Going against the tide of flocking to well-known tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known attractions. Reverse tourism (逆向旅游) has appeared as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
According to data from an online travel agency, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less-traveled cities during the holiday was up 30 percent year-on-year. Bookings for four-star or five-star hotels in less-traveled places all increased ten times at a minimum. Some lesser-known scenic spots posted double-digit (两位数的) growth during the holiday. Baimaiquan Park in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, received 52,100 visits in the seven days, up to 15.78 percent year-over-year.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations. In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as “commercial” as developed ones and are able to offer more actual experiences and natural encounters.
Essentially speaking, total relaxation is becoming a real expectation for many people when they travel. Changes in demand may be the fundamental reason for the popularity of reverse tourism. COVID-19 is another key factor fueling reverse tourism. As preventive measures continue, traveling has an unpredictable quality. Travelers have thus become more cautious and tend to choose local attractions or places with fewer tourists.
“The rise of reverse tourism is not a bad thing,” said Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market. More importantly, it noted, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their past honor.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market. To give a real boost to the tourism market, Jiang suggested that more efforts be made to tap the potential of underestimated, lesser-known destinations. It is necessary to dig deeper into the local customs and highlight the local characteristics to improve the quality of local tourism.
12.What do the statistics in paragraph 2 tell us
A. The popularity of travel agency in China.
B. The high income of hotels during holidays.
C. The contributions of tourism to the economy.
D. The increasing trend of reverse tourism in China.
13.What may be the root cause of the rise of reverse tourism
A. The impact of COVID-19.
B. Holidaymakers’ changing needs for travel.
C. The lower cost of heading to less-traveled places.
D. The lack of innovative improvements in famous attractions.
14.What does Zhengzhou Daily think of reverse tourism
A. It will drop with the recovery of economy.
B. It benefits both tourists and the tourism market.
C. It is beneficial to spread local culture to tourists.
D. It blocks the development of some popular resorts.
15.What is Jiang Han’s advice on developing the tourism market
A. Upgrading the supporting facilities in tourist areas.
B. Improving the management rules of tourist attractions further.
C. Exploring the potential and features of lesser-known attractions.
D. Promoting the local characteristics of China through online media.
二、七选五
16.As the saying goes, failure is the mother of success. Many of us were told from an early age that, at school or in life, “you learn from your mistakes.” Is this actually true
The short answer is “yes”. ① _________ Because we would not like to fail, learning from our mistakes is, in reality, very hard. It doesn’t feel good. So we react to failure in emotional ways, like giving up on a task easily, telling ourselves we don’t care whether we succeed, or finding fault with the task itself. This is self-protective, according to Hallgeir Sjastad, a psychology professor. In his opinion, most of us want to think of ourselves as capable. ② _________
Fortunately there are strategies to help us overcome the emotional barriers. ③ _________. Instead of asking “Why did I fail ”, we could ask “Why did Sam fail ”, for example. Multiple studies show this way helps to soften our negative emotional reactions. Also it allows us to look at failure more objectively.
④ _________ This led to better levels of motivation and academic success in the test groups — involving both adults and children — that were asked to give advice based on their own failures. Professor Eskreis-Winkler found that the satisfaction of helping others “forces people to engage with their experience and what they have learned”.
The writer Samuel Beckett once said, “fail again, fail better.” But it now seems that we should say, “fail again, fail smarter”. ⑤ _________, but by learning to overcome the emotional barriers around it, we may find the road to success is a little easier to navigate (驾驭).
A. Everyone needs success
B. Hard work leads to success
C. Failure can be a teachable moment
D. Failure is an unavoidable part of life
E. One of them is to adopt a third-person view
F. Next, offer advice to others in the same position as us
G. So what failure causes is a serious threat to our self-image

The Perfect Christmas Tree
In our house in Middle Cove, Newfoundland, the tradition was to find the perfect tree before Christmas Eve. And this year, my brother Gilbert and I were being trusted to do it entirely on our own. And we took the challenge very seriously. So, axe in Gilbert’s hand, saw in mine, we set out for all the spots we imagined we might find a magnificent fir (冷杉树).
We were young, but we knew the rules. Trees could not be taken from personal land and not near any road.
We started out with the best of intentions. We were on Pine River Lane, and looking at the firs in the fields, but none of them looked quite good enough. It was getting dark but we still had no luck. On the way home, it was Gilbert who stopped, grabbed my arm and said, “I see it!”
“You see what ” I said.
“Right there, look. It’s perfect.”
And he was right. It was a young tree, two metres tall, standing alone. It was the classic Christmas tree. In all my years, I had never seen such a perfect one.
Perfect except for one small problem. The tree was pretty close to the road. Also, it was behind a fence, so the tree was in someone’s yard. And not just any someone. It was in the yard of Timmy Green, my best friend.
However, the chances of our finding another one like it were slim to none.
“You stand guard,” Gilbert said. And with that, we were over the fence and on our bellies crawling toward the target. I lay in the snow and put the Greens’ house under surveillance (监视). I was to whistle or cough if I saw anyone coming.
Within a few minutes, it fell.
“Grab the end,” Gilbert said, and we lifted it over the fence. Now we were on the road.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Suddenly Gilbert’s eyes widened. “Our footprints!” he said.

Para.1: Suddenly Gilbert’s eyes widened. “Our footprints!” he said. Sure enough, all around the base of the stump were footprints. Boys’ footprints. We might as well have left a signed note. Suddenly, an idea occurred to me and I patted Gilbert on the shoulder and signaled him to climb over the fence. Together we got down on all fours and wiped away our footprints with great effort. All was done! And as expected, what greeted us back home was enormous praise for the perfect tree. Satisfied as I was, the idea of being caught “stealing” the tree kept lingering in my mind. However, nobody came around and asked questions. It seemed the Greens had never noticed the missing of their property.
Para.2: So it shocked me when I found Mr Green in our house with my parents, drinking tea on Christmas Eve. A ripple of fear crept inside before I finally made it to look up at Mr Green’s eyes and forced a smile. It so happened that Dad was proudly introducing the Christmas tree. “It’s a pity I’ll never have one like that.” Mr Green spoke of his tree in the yard which was nurtured for Christmas with lowered eyes. Cocooned in overwhelming guilt, I kept up courage and stuttered my apologies. Mr Green, shocked at first, nodded smilingly after learning the whole thing. Stroking the delicately decorated tree, I came to realize that not only did I find the perfect Christmas tree, but also retrieved the best in me, which was, is and will be carved in my memory.
