(2023秋·黑龙江大庆·高三大庆中学校考一模)Being highly successful in any field is pretty rare. It takes a combination of natural talent, luck, determination, and plenty of outside support for someone to make it big in sports, entertainment, or business. But what if competing is all that matters to you, whether you are likely to succeed or not This was the goal of Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, and his reaching that goal was an amazing achievement.
Born in the UK in 1963, Edwards was a passionate downhill skier whose dream was to compete for Britain in world-class competitions. He would have liked to represent his country in the 1984 Winter Olympics, but there were a large number of downhill competitors, and Edwards didn’t qualify. Seeing his chance elsewhere, he switched to ski jumping. Ski jumping didn’t cost as much as downhill skiing, and there was almost no competition for a place on the British team.
But a number of hurdles could have meant the end of Edwards’ dream. He weighed more than most competitors. He had no financial support for his training. Poor eyesight meant that he had to wear glasses under his goggles—not a good thing when they steamed up at high altitudes. But he couldn’t let any of these discourage him. He saw himself as a true lover of the sport who simply wanted the chance to compete. Winning wasn’t the point. Having the opportunity to try was all he cared about. And nothing could stop him from trying.
In the end, Edwards took 55th place at the 1987 World Championships. He then went on to the
1988 Winter Olympics where he finished last. Many athletes would have been embarrassed about this result, but he is proud of his achievements to this day. His determination to fight against all the odds made him a global hero, and in 2016, the inspiring film Eddie the Eagle was made about his life.

(2023秋·湖北·高三统考阶段练习)The Twenty-three-year-old Mumbai girl Vidhi Bubna is offering India’s first and only diving grant to explore the marine ecosystem.
Vidhi’s first diving experience turned out to be a heartbreaking one. While she expected a lot of colors underwater as she had seen on TV, Vidhi came across all white corals (珊瑚), which means they are almost dead from being bleached (褪色).
“It was very sad and I just started crying after coming out of the water,” she says.
Vidhi, an economics graduate from Ashoka University, did not enjoy working with numbers and turned to writing about social issues, including women’s rights and minority issues.
As an adventure lover, Vidhi went diving to explore the underwater beauty last year. Her disappointment at seeing dying corals led to the start of Coral Warriors, anon-profit organization that aims to raise awareness of marine protection and climate change.
“Nobody knows about climate change till they see it,” Vidhi says. The Mumbai-based organisation offers India’s first and only diving grant. The grant sponsors level-one scuba diving education in any location of their choice in India. While there is no specific standard, Vidhi says the selection process is strict, choosing candidates who are passionate about climate change and seeing that they do something of their choice. Four candidates have been awarded the grant so far and the organisation hopes to find at least five people every year.
“After the candidates return, we expect them to work on a climate change project of their choice, create communities, and work to create awareness and drive action-centric projects,” she explains.
Prior to starting coral warriors, Vidhi was hosting free online workshops to spread awareness of marine biodiversity and climate change, and has reached about 5, 000 people through them.
As a next step, Vidhi is planning to work on documentaries with high-quality underwater images and videos, considering not many can afford or have the courage to go diving to see what is happening underwater.

(2023秋·福建厦门·高三福建省厦门第二中学校考开学考试)Alicia Quarles has her hands full these days — both of them, at all hours of the day and night.
“Having a baby unexpectedly at 41 is one thing; having twins is a whole other beast, ” says the global entertainment editor.
Actually, until her pregnancy Quarles had been living at breakneck speed. It went so until last year. “I was exhausted,” she says. “I’d been working three jobs, doing my charity and going nonstop. I was afraid my mental health was getting worse.” In early August she took herself to the hospital, to see if she was OK. Doctors ran multiple tests and told her that she had had an anxiety attack, and she was 11 weeks pregnant.
“She was stressed and decompensated (代谢失调的), so everything just came to more than she could handle at the time,” explains doctor Miriam Barnes, who began treating her. “Fortunately, she tried to be positive and seek help from me immediately. I told her not to have any medication at that stage and advised her to take natural therapy (疗法).”
A week later Quarles learned that she was having twins. But instead of that news adding to her anxiety, “a total peace came over me, and it felt like it all made sense,” she says. Quarles, who did not take any medication, returned home to her loved ones in North Carolina, where she gave birth to Hudson and Harlow on Feb. 16. “There’s nothing like family,” she says. “I found out through working on myself in natural therapy that there were a lot of things I hadn’t dealt with. I just kept going.”
These days Quarles uses social media to document her joyful motherhood journey. Quarles has put her anxiety behind but remains in therapy — and wants to encourage others who feel stressed to get help. “At first I felt guilty and embarrassed,” she admits. “I don’t anymore. My message is you can fall down. But you can stand up, by yourself or with the help of others. It’s not a shame, and it’s a blessing.”

(2022秋·四川内江·高三四川省资中县第二中学校考阶段练习)Everything has its place and no one understands a concept better than 7-year-old Jacob Dunnack of Willimantic, Connecticut. Though Jacob feels that his place is on the baseball field, on the rare occasions when he’s not outside playing, his ball has a place of its own, safe and secure inside its bat.
Last year after experiencing difficulty carrying both his ball and bat home, Jacob invented the JD Batball- a 22-inch baseball bat inside which baseballs can be stored.
While most people find his accomplishment at such a young age inspiring, his mother, Elizabeth Dunnack, says that the heart of the matter lies in Jacob’s amazing spirit and will to live.
“You see,” his mother says,“Jacob was born with a rare heart disease and at four days old he had the first of a series of operations. At 11 months old, a ten hour open-heart operation resulted in a serious stroke. The doctor said that Jacob would be blind and disabled permanently.”
She continues, “With a lot of hard work and loving support over many years, today Jacob cannot only see, but walk and, through his own determination, even play baseball!”
Even though the stroke caused Jacob to lose the use of his right hand, this didn’t stop him from pursuing his favorite sport as he grew older. When he had trouble carrying both the bat and the ball home, that’s when he came up with the idea of storing the ball inside the bat so that he could carry both with one hand.

(2022·云南保山·统考一模)I was checking out at the supermarket counter on Wednesday night, ready to pay for my bananas, when all of a sudden, fear came upon me. My wallet was gone. And I could only have left it one place: the G9 bus, from which I had gotten off minutes earlier and which was now speeding to some stops. The moment of realizing it was gone was followed by mental math. How much time and money would it cost to replace the credit cards, the driver’s license, the expensive lipstick ($55!).
Two hours after I was back at my house, I heard a knock on the door. My husband answered while I sat in the dining room on the phone with a credit card company. “Does Jennifer live here ” I heard someone say. In her hand was my wallet, without a penny missing. She left before I could offer my gratitude to her.
After I posted the story, I heard from her boyfriend, who identified the good citizen as Erin Ball, a 26-year-old girl working for a trade organization.
Once I figured out her, I called to thank her. She said she spotted my wallet and thought that it’s more dangerous to go to a stranger’s house than leaving the wallet with the driver, but she still decided to take the chance. “If I were in that situation, I would want someone to try to find me,” she said. Ball doesn’t find her actions particularly excellent. She added, “It’s not hard to do small things for people. ”
After Ball found my wallet, she decided to post a picture of my driver’s license online before going to my house, trying to see if anyone knew me. No sooner had she left my doorstep than I got emails from two neighbors who recognized my face, both offering to help me find my missing property.

(2023秋·江苏镇江·高三统考开学考试)On any given day Damon Carson will deal with lots of inquiries from large companies looking to unload massive amounts of stuff that would otherwise go to the landfill (废物填埋场). For example, twenty-eight plastic boxes from a store were just waiting for him to repurpose them. And a recreation company wanted to know if Carson was interested in 360 kilograms of blue ropes
“They don’t want to just throw it away,” he explains. “Nor should they. Because it has value. ”The question of what value, and to whom, is what occupies Carson’s days.
For nearly a decade, his company, Repurposed Materials, has been devoted to this. He’s not looking to recycle the stuff he gets—breaking it down to make something new—but rather finding new homes for abandoned goods in their original forms.
In the late 1990s, Carson was on break from business school, when he discovered the profitable world of waste. He and a friend started a small business near construction sites. Working in construction, Carson had become familiar with an almost-everyday phenomenon: “You’d open up one of these big construction dumpster (大垃圾箱) and stuff would start falling out,” he says. He would find perfectly good wood, or a window still wrapped in plastic from the factory. “You can’t wrap your mind around how wasteful America is until you run a waste company,” he says
There is a solid environmental case for repurposing, or upcycling. “When people call, I say we don’t chip, grind, melt.” “Carson notes. Recycling, however noble, still takes energy. “Why melt something down, if it still has value ” he asks. An old oil-field pipe might be melted down and turned into a car bumper, but it still takes a fair amount of power to finish the transformation. Why not put it straight up and turn it into a fence post on a farm The only cost is transport.
Carson recently opened two new warehouses (仓库), bringing the total to six. “Corporations(企业) are,” he says, “becoming increasingly focused on sustainability, so we’re upping (使升级) our capabilities. You never know when the next 20,000-kilogram spool of 10-centimeter-thick rope might come along, or where it might go.”
21.What does Carson’s company Repurposed Materials do
A.It helps large companies bury waste.
B.It warns people against throwing away waste.
C.It brings new lives to abandoned stuff.
D.It changes the original form of abandoned stuff.
22.What advantage does upcycling have over recycling according to Carson
A.It is more logical B.It is more systematic
C.It is more formal D.It is more energy-saving
23.What caused Carson to consider upping his company’s capabilities
A.Current trend of using heavier ropes.
B.Fast development of his warehouses.
C.Natural process of treating waste materials.
D.Increasing environmental concerns of corporations.
24.Which of the following best describes Carson
A.Generous and hard-working B.Intelligent and humorous
C.Devoted and forward-looking D.Independent and responsible
(2023秋·新疆伊犁·高三奎屯市第一高级中学校考阶段练习)It was the men’s skating finals of the Winter Olympics when I was 16. Someday I’d be in the Olympics. In fact, it was my dream.
That night I lay on our living room floor excitedly watching the battle between the Brians: American Brian Boitano facing Brian Orser in Canada. Both of them had been world champions. Both of them deserved to win. Naturally I was for Brian Boitano, a northern Californian like me. We had skated on the same ice. I held my breath in amazement. Boitano performed successfully. The gold medal! I jumped in the air when his score went up.
But what happened next is what I’ll never forget. Brian Boitano sat in front of the camera with his coach, surrounded by a group of journalists. He was talking about his career and his medal, talking to the whole world. A terrible sinking feeling went through me. I could never be in the Olympics, I thought. I could not talk in public like that. Just the idea of a press conference terrified me.
I loved skating partly because I didn’t have to talk. I could express myself with my jumps and dances better. I didn’t have to stand up and give a speech like some teachers expected. I could feel the blood rush to my face if I thought a teacher was going to call me. I stared at my shoes. I was sure I’d make a fool of myself.
The next day I was at the rink (溜冰场)as usual. I was practising a combination of jumps that had once seemed impossible. I worked very hard the next few years — on the ice and especially off. After journalists talked to me and although my heart pounded every time I spoke to them, I got to know them. They became familiar faces. And they got to know me. So when my big moment came four years after Brians, I was ready. Sometimes I think my biggest accomplishment was not winning the gold but talking to the press afterwards. When you do the thing you fear most, you put an end to fear.
Fear can stop you dead in your tracks. Fear can kill a dream. What are you afraid of What scares you more than anything else This year, walk right up to it and conquer it, step by step.

(2023秋·广西·高三南宁二中校联考开学考试)Last year, my Singapore-based sister insisted my mother and I join her for the Christmas. My mum, a fearless woman, would get strangely nervous on flights. Perhaps the only thing that convinced her to overcome her fears was the chance to piece together our declining bond.
Growing up, moments with Mum were painfully short-lived because I spent most time at the boarding school, reuniting only during the holidays. Every year, she would eagerly await my return, which would always lead to constant loving scenes. Those cherished moments were gradually vanishing as I moved away for university. Soon, our relationship became tense. She seemed unable to comprehend me and her stubborn and old-fashioned advice forced me to shut myself. But the more I pulled away, the more I felt a longing for the bond that had grown so dim. Perhaps Singapore would give us a chance to breathe it back to life.
I assumed the immersive exhibits at Art Science Museum would refresh my mother, who was an art student. However, I was surprised when she just turned her nose up at the Bruges Whale, a sculpture using plastic waste to raise awareness about ocean pollution. “It’s art, Mum! Be more appreciative.” I defended.
Disheartened by the distance between us, I led her to the kid’s zone. We signed up for a joint sketching activity, hoping that would help us connect. As our creative juices flowed, our faded relationship began to take on the hues and shades of something sincere and beautiful.
“Look!” she excitedly pointed towards a digital screen that displayed our creations. “That one’s ours.” Mum went up and reached out, touching the fish as it moved its tail back and forth in the virtual tank.
Looking around, I saw children sharing moments with their parents, and my own childhood flashed back. That rare instance where she let slip an inner innocence and delight at a new experience revealed the little girl in her, who was like me, had lost a vital connection to responsibilities of motherhood.
“Our time together was like that of friends. You were my mother, and I’m a child following you around.” My mum said to me with a smile.
29.What made Mum accept the visit to Singapore
A.The resolve to overcome the nervousness on flight.
B.The desire to restore relationship with her children.
C.The sincere invitation of my Singapore-based sister.
D.The expectation for Art Science Museum as an artist.
30.What is the attitude of Mum towards the Bruges Whale
A.She felt it a huge waste to make it from plastic.
B.She showed a great interest in this work of art.
C.She didn’t think it good enough to be exhibited.
D.She considered it beneficial to ocean protection.
31.What can we learn from the sketching activity
A.It revealed Mum’s inner ignorance like a girl.
B.It explored causes for faded bond between families.
C.It let Mum totally lose responsibilities of motherhood.
D.It provided an opportunity to share moments with families.
32.What do Mum’s words imply in the last paragraph
A.A good medicine tastes bitter. B.Life has indeed come full circle.
C.Actions speak louder than words. D.Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.
(2021秋·广东·高三校联考阶段练习)Peggy, a nine-year-old border collie (柯利牧羊犬), was signed over to the RSPCA (皇家防止虐待动物协会) after her handler could no longer communicate with her. He thought she could no longer work because she was not able to hear whistles or voice commands.
However, after being handed to the RSPCA, Peggy was taken in by Chloe Shorten, an animal welfare manager from the organization’s mid-Norfolk and north Suffolk branch.
Shorten, 28, and her husband Jason, 34, a shepherd, taught Peggy to understand hand signals and body language. The couple trained Peggy with the help of a sheepdog trainer and their two other working dogs, Sid and Nora.
Shorten said, “We completely fell in love with Peggy almost immediately, and it soon became clear that she wouldn’t be going anywhere. We knew Peggy wanted to be working, so we started the long process of teaching her how to herd and work with a shepherd without relying on voice commands.”
The couple began by training Peggy to look at them to receive hand signals. “We used repetitive and positive reinforcement (加强) and instead of pairing a verbal command with an action we’d use a hand gesture. She reads our hand signals and body language as a way of telling what we’re asking for. For example, thumbs up means ‘good girl’. A flat, outstretched palm means ‘stop’.”
Shorten and her husband point in a certain direction to indicate where they want Peggy to go and pat their knees to summon her back to them. To ask her to slow down, Shorten said she does a waving gesture.
Peggy is not working full-time but enjoys helping out in the fields. “It can be difficult with a deaf dog, because you have to wave at her to get her attention, and sometimes she doesn’t realize straight away,” she said. “But she’s such a happy little dog. She’s no spring chicken, and she is generally retired, but she loves going out to work with us and running around in the fields.”
33.What do we learn about Peggy from the passage
A.Peggy was transferred from her former owner to RSPCA for her old age.
B.Peggy was trained without the aid of other dogs.
C.Peggy was adopted by the couple shortly after the couple met her.
D.Peggy is full of energy and now is working all day long.
34.How did the couple train Peggy to understand their hand signals and body language
A.By applying repeated and positive reinforcement.
B.By paring a verbal command with an action.
C.By patting their knees.
D.By doing a waving gesture.
35.What is the meaning of the underlined part in Paragraph 7
A.not deaf B.not young C.not energetic D.not positive
36.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Sign language is of importance to training dogs to herd.
B.How RSPCA rescues the abandoned dogs and sends them to some families.
C.How Shorten and Jason teach deaf dogs to herd and work with a shepherd.
D.An elderly deaf sheepdog is now working again after learning sign language.
