Working at an investment bank in New York City in the mid-2010s, Anna Sacks was living the life—just not the life she wanted. Sure, she was happy. But she wanted to do something that was important and meaningful on a deeper level.
Sacks packed up her life and moved to Connecticut for three months to participate in Adamah, a Jewish farming program that focuses on sustainable(可持续的) living and growing sustainable food. The Adamah program opened Sacks’s eyes to the damage that consumer culture is doing on a local, national, and global level, and the need to find solutions. From then on, she began what she calls “trash(垃圾) walking.”
While walking around her neighborhood, Sacks,31, picked through rubbish to look for reusable items. Soon, her trash walks expanded to include company rubbish along with residential trash. Surprisingly, she discovered a wide range of really great stuff—like clothing, dinnerware, and food—all of which she documents on Instagram and TikTok.
Under the name The Trash Walker, Sacks quickly gained popularity for her educational, funny, and surprising videos that highlight the problems with consumerism and share information about how to live a more sustainable life. “The root issue is overproduction, which leads to overconsumption, which leads to a large amount of waste,” she says. Sacks’s videos have gone viral(走红) many times, causing shockwaves through the industries she calls out.
Trash walking has given Sacks a nearly endless supply and she shares much of her “treasure” with others. She tries giving them informally to family, friends, or individuals she knows may need a specific item. Then she takes the remaining items to free stores so other New Yorkers can benefit from her treasure-hunting.
Sacks’s main focus is simply getting people to pay attention to how many unnecessary things they buy and then throw away. “Once you become aware of the way you consume, you can see ways you improve,” she says.
24.What inspired Sacks to begin her “trash walking”
A.Her desire to live a richer life. B.The great need for household stuff.
C.Her involvement in a project. D.The wish to be an Internet star.
25.What do Sacks’ videos focus on
A.Funny stories. B.Views on consumption. C.Educational courses. D.Fashionable items.
26.How does Sacks deal with her trash
A.She donates all to the charity. B.She keeps most for her family.
C.She gives away much to others. D.She sells some to individuals.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Trash Walker: Find Treasure in Trash B.Trash Walking: A Tough Journey
C.Trash Walker: Live in the Moment D.Trash Walking: A New Career

Lake Titicaca is a freshwater lake in the Andes mountains on the border of Bolivia. It’s the largest lake in South America. Dotted along the lake’s western corner, you can find dozens of artificial islands. Several thatched (茅草的) houses and structures sit on each island, some of which are only 30 meters or so wide, although larger ones exist.
The floating platforms are built by piling layers upon layers of mixed totora roots and reeds(芦苇). The totora plant is necessary to life on the lake. Its strong root fibers are used to make houses, boats, roofs, mattresses, and more, as well as used to make tea, traditional medicine, and tasty dishes known as “lake banana”.
So the story goes, this unusual living arrangement came out in the pre-Columbian era when the ambitious Inc a Empire began invading(入侵) into the mainland villages of Uros. The Uros villages moved to Lake Titicaca where they built these floating platforms. If invading Inc a came their way, the Uros could push these artificial islands out to the middle of the lake and flee their attack.
The threat of the Inca Empire has long passed, but the tradition remains strong. Even today, it’s estimated that around 1,300 Uros live on some 100 constructed islands on Lake Titicaca. Maintaining the lifestyle isn’t easy. While totora is a tough material, the thatched organic material degrades due to the forces of nature over time, meaning the islands and homes are in a constant state of repair.
However, the traditional way of life isn’t without its modern benefits. Many of the islands have solar panels that power lights, radios, and television satellites. The lake’s artificial islands have also become a must-see spectacle for tourists, with some locals even renting out their totora-thatched homes to travelers on online rental website Airbnb.
28.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.The value of the totora plant. B.The process to build the islands.
C.The islands made of water plants. D.The tradition and history of the Uros.
29.Why did the ancient Uros build artificial islands on the lake
A.To live a nature-friendly life. B.To preserve their old lifestyle.
C.To build thatched houses on them. D.To protect themselves against enemies.
30.What do we know about the current life of the Uros
A.They have lost their native language.
B.Modern devices have come into their life.
C.Tourism is their major source of income.
D.They’re tired of repairing the totora-thatched houses.
31.What is the purpose of the text
A.To persuade. B.To educate. C.To advertise. D.To introduce.

When running through an airport, your luggage becomes a burden for you. A new ride-on suitcase called the Airwheel, currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, can let your luggage carry you around for a change.
Companies like Trunki have been making ride-on suitcases for kids for years, and later involved in adapting them for adults too. And the appeal of the idea is hard to deny—who wouldn’t want to slide to their terminal(航站楼) on top of their luggage, rather than trying to carry it while you’re running
The Airwheel is designed to make it come true, equipping an electric motor, rechargable battery and a steering(操控) device just like the motorbike handlebars. The accelerator and brake take the form of buttons on the handle, and the 4-in(10-cm) wheels are apparently tough enough to run over rocky roads and cracks. The outer frame is strong enough to support riders weighing up to 130 kg.
At max speed the case can get up to 10 km/h, and the battery will last one hour at that speed. The company says that not only is this faster than other ride-on suitcases, but the more upright sitting position is more comfortable and natural than the bent-over posture of others, which is the riders’ big hit.
For a touch of customization(定制), the Airwheel connects to an app which lets users set up colors and patterns of lights. There’s also a search mode to help you find it on a luggage transfer-belt. That said, making the suitcase transparent is a bit of a unique design choice. Your customized suitcase will draw your attention easily.
The Airwheel has already passed its goal on Kickstarter, with 44 days remaining on the campaign. If all goes to plan, shipping should begin in February 2024.
32.Why does Trunki company try to produce the Airwheel
A.It is popular with kids. B.It meets the demands of customers.
C.It can raise fund for the local airport. D.It can help travellers keep their luggage.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The instructions of the Airwheel. B.The methods to use the Airwheel.
C.The applications of the Airwheel. D.The process of making the Airwheel.
34.What do the riders like best about the Airwheel
A.Its longer duration of transport. B.Its popular bent-over posture.
C.Its increasing running speed. D.Its natural sitting position.
35.What does the underlined word “transparent” mean in paragraph 5
A.Widely available. B.Completely controlled.
C.Easily recognized. D.Environmentally friendly.

When he opened the door, Daniel felt a rush of warm air. He smiled at the sun. Perfect hiking weather, he thought. Daniel loved his backyard. There were plenty of tall trees. If he walked far enough, he would reach a lake. When it was really warm outside, he could walk in the water to cool off. The water was always cold.
The leaves were just beginning to grow on the trees after the cold winter. Daniel wandered for a bit. He picked up a long stick and used it to clear a way through the forest.
Suddenly, Daniel saw something in the distance that wasn’t a rock or a leaf. When he got closer, he knelt down to investigate. He found a small injured bird between the fallen leaves. 书面表达
Skipping Meals
Our class conducted a survey entitled “How often meals are skipped”. The results of the survey show that the percentage of students who skip meals several times a week is 50%.
Some students are keen to eat snacks, skipping regular meals, which does great harm to their health, and even their study, while other students may not have access to a health y meal due to their busy schedules or lack of access to healthy food options.
As far as I am concerned, providing health y meal options can help reduce the harmful impact of skipping meals and provide students with the nutrition they need. Secondly, it’s important to carve out time for meals by making small adjustments in our schedule or prioritizing breakfast or lunch over other activities.
读后续写
“Mom, I found a bird that’s hurt!” He told her as he ran through the door. His mom was about to do some housework when she heard Daniel yelling. Seeing his nervous look, she rushed out of the house. She was in shock when she saw the injured bird. “Oh, this poor thing! It looks like it might have a broken wing,” she said, carefully picking up the bird. “We should send it to the animal hospital at once.” Daniel and his mom carefully placed the bird into a box and got into their car.
They took the bird to the animal hospital. The doctor examined the bird and said it had a broken wing. “We’ll need to set the wing and keep it here for a few weeks until it’s fully recovered,” he said. Daniel and his mom were relieved to know that the bird would be taken care of. On their way home, Daniel’s mom turned to him and said, “Daniel, I’m so proud of you for rescuing that bird today. You have a big heart.” Daniel smiled and a sense of accomplishment washed over him. He knew that even though he had planned to explore the yard that day, helping the bird had been even more important.

A four-year-old girl surprised the audiences all over the world when she spoke seven languages fluently on a TV show.
Della participated in the Russian reality TV show Incredible People, impressing judges in Moscow with her remarkable language skills. Besides her native Russian, Della speaks English, German, Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic. That includes the six official United Nations languages with the addition of German. Instead of just having some simple small talks, Della is actually able to communicate in these languages. During the show she managed to answer questions based on the school curriculum in all these languages. Della’s mother started teaching her daughter English at the age of two, but as soon as she noticed that Della was interested in it, she began to let her daughter be tutored by native speakers for other languages.
Language specialists have been just as impressed as Della’s global audiences. One language expert was quoted as saying, “Such cases are rare but have happened in the past.” He believes that Della will not lose her knowledge but warns at some point it can become frozen if she does not continue to use and practice it.
