From learning about protecting wild animals and natural habitats to reading about the impact of recycling, picture books are perfect for showing kids how to get involved. Here are four of such books:
Thank You, Earth
The author of this book, April Pulley Sayre, has authored many award-winning books for kids, and this one is truly, special. It’s written in a letter format, thanking the Earth for so many great natural moments and phenomena. You’ll find beautiful photography cover to cover, so kids can get an up-close look at what they’re reading.

On her website, she even has links to free animated audio-books, which are a great resource for parents or teachers looking for virtual story time.
The EARTH Book
Todd Parr has always done a lovely job, focusing on simple illustrations and lessons. His distinct style shines through this book, giving kids real ideas they can try in their everyday lives. It’s a good book for even the youngest of environmentalists and perfect for families to read together. Use it to get the conversation going with little ones.
Tall Tall Tree
Describing the wildlife that lives in Northern California’s redwood forests, it turns story time into a counting lesson as young children count all the creatures in the forests. Slightly older readers will also love reciting Tony Frederick’s playful rhyme all on their own and learning about the animals of the forest.

The famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, “I always do what I can’t do so that I can learn how to do it.” It strikes a chord (引起共鸣) with me because that’s exactly what I’ve done these years.
One of my earliest memories of doing before learning is of baking scones (烤饼) when I was about 10 years old. I wanted to bake them to surprise my mother when she returned home.
Before that I’d observed how my mother baked them many times. As I started to try, I didn’t know I shouldn’t handle the dough (面团) with my hands too much once I’d added the baking powder (发酵粉). However, I knew exactly how to roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter to cut the scones, because my mom had already taught me.
By the time my mom arrived home, the smell of freshly baked scones welcomed her into the kitchen. They were baked to golden brown perfection—flat, as a result of overhandling the dough, but they tasted OK. My mom sweetly praised me for my attempt, rather than scolding me for the state of the kitchen, which was like a tornado had just blown!
Have my attempts always been successful I wish! Some of my kitchen disasters were of such proportions that even the dogs wanted nothing to do with them. My gardening failures didn’t live to see another season.
But my habit of doing before learning is still helpful. Whatever computer program or application I have to learn, I do so by simply starting to use it. I do, learn, and improve. So if you ask me whether I regret that I tend to do first and learn later, I’d say I don’t, because what I have discovered from those is the wisdom to know when it’s OK to do and then learn, and when it’s probably better to learn and then do!
24. What can we learn about the author’s first experience of baking scones
A. She practiced hard before actually trying.
B. She turned to her mom when necessary.
C. She wanted to perform better than her mom.
D. She managed to do it despite a little imperfection.
25. How did Mom respond to the author’s attempt
A. She made improvements to the scones.
B. She expressed her appreciation for the job.
C. She shared her first experience of baking.
D. She was surprised by the mess in the kitchen.
26. What does the author think of her practices of “doing before learning”
A. They are just a barely usable method. B. Most of them have ended up in failure.
C. They contribute a lot to her self-improvement. D. They only apply to the learning of specific skills.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To stress the importance of keeping learning.
B. To show the benefits of doing before learning.
C. To encourage people to do something they can’t do.
D. To call on readers to change their way of learning.

Neil de Grasse Tyson, a famous astrophysicist, said, “The day we stop exploring is the day we commit ourselves to living in a stagnant (停滞不前的) world, lack of curiosity, empty of dreams.” We as human beings need to explore. Curiosity is in our nature.
There are some, however, who do not think that space exploration is necessary. Space exploration can cost a lot of money. According to , “In 2016, the budget for NASA was $19.3 billion and it would only take $30 billion to end world hunger globally each year.” Not only does space exploration hurt the finances of countries, it also affects the planets.
To reach the stars, we must consume fossil fuels. More than 3.8 million pounds of fuels were used for the space shuttle program in the United States. The cost for a single load of fuel for the SpaceX Dragon is estimated to be high as $300,000 per launch. These fossil fuels can damage the atmosphere and the oceans when all the leftover metals fall into it.
Another problem with space exploration is the risk that it poses for the astronauts themselves. Astronauts are putting their minds and bodies on the line when they go into space. Space radiation can damage their central nervous system, with both acute effects and later consequences.
While the observation does make very good and important points, the benefits of exploring our solar system greatly outweigh the negatives. Space exploration allows us to see what the universe has in plan for us. According to nasa.gov, “Future missions may be able to identify whether the planets have atmosphere and, if so, even determine their compositions.”
According to greengarbageblog.org. “We are now able to use satellites to monitor the weather, atmosphere and discover new things which are applied in our daily lives. And at times of hurricanes and typhoons, these satellites are used to monitor their movement and identify their coverage.” Thanks to space exploration, we can see what is out in space and what is coming so we can predict and prepare ourselves.
Space exploration is rather important and necessary in today’s world. It creates opportunities for people to not only be employed but expand their knowledge and creativity.
28. What is some people’s concern about space exploration
A. It might affect the earth’s environment.
B. It might lead to competition among countries.
C. It might make world hunger a bigger problem.
D. It might cause a serious shortage of fossil fuels.
29. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A. Astronauts tend to feel very uncomfortable in space.
B. Astronauts are faced with various challenges in space.
C. Astronauts play an important role in space exploration.
D. Astronauts might suffer both physical and mental problems.
30. What does NASA expect to do in the future
A. Study the planets in detail. B. Compare Earth with other planets.
C. Ensure safety of space exploration. D. Send experienced astronauts into space.
31. Which benefit can Earth get from space exploration
A. It can send signals to other planets.
B. It can make satellites more controllable.
C. It can make preparations for natural disasters.
D. It can warn other planets of natural disasters.
D
Animals, including humans, depend on accurate information to navigate (导航) the world. But we can easily be affected by misinformation or “fake news”, fooling us into making a poor choice. However, a team of scientists in New Zealand shows how a form of fake news can help save vulnerable wildlife.
Predators (捕食者) were introduced to New Zealand in the 1800s. They are especially common in the landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin on New Zealand’s South Island. There, they eat eggs and kill endangered shorebirds. The birds evolved with predators, and have learnt to hide from them by building camouflaged (隐蔽的) nests on the river shores.
And the research led by Grant Norbury, a senior scientist at Landcare Research (LCR), aims to undermine the predators’ strategies. In the study, the researchers first collected odors (气味) got from the feathers and preen glands of three bird species. Five weeks before the shorebirds arrived for their breeding season in 2016, the researchers mixed the odors with Vaseline and spread the mixture on hundreds of rocks over two 1,000-hectare study sites.
The predators were attracted to the odors in the beginning. But within days, after realizing the scent would not lead to food, they lost interest and stopped visiting the site. The shorebirds then arrived at Mackenzie Basin at their normal breeding time, and began building nests and laying eggs. At control sites where the “fake news” had not been used effectively, the predators ate eggs and birds at the usual rate. But at sites where they put out unrewarding bird odors, the results were impressive.
The number of nests destroyed by predators almost halved. As a result, chick production was 1.7 times higher at treated sites compared to control sites over the 25—35 days of the nesting season. To ensure the results were not due to lower predator numbers or different behavior in some areas, the researchers flipped treatments again the next year and got the same result.
Dr Norbury and his collaborators’ models predicted that odor-treated sites resulted in a 127% increase in modeled shorebird population size in 25 years. They also mentioned that tricking cats and ferrets into ignoring ground-nesting shorebirds using treatments of unrewarded bird odors was easy and inexpensive, with costs of about $33 per hectare for 30 days of treatment.
32. How did the shorebirds try to protect themselves from predators
A. By seeking help from humans. B. By scaring them away with smells.
C. By hiding their nests in safe places. D. By warning each other of possible danger.
33. What does the underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Weaken. B. Benefit. C. Support. D. Analyze.
34. What did the researchers do to prove their methods are effective
A. They showed the exact number of predators.
B. They set up as many control sites as possible.
C. They collected the birds’ odors in different ways.
D. They performed the same experiment once more.
35. What would be the best title for the text
A. Predators Are Learning to Identify Fake News
B. Shorebirds Can Easily Be Cheated by Humans
C. Fake News Can Spread Quickly Among Shorebirds
D. Scientists Are Using Fake News to Protect Shorebirds

Whether we’re sad about the loss of a loved one or angry at friends or family, it often feels good to let it all out because sharing our emotions reduces our stress and helps us feel good. 36 . Expressing our emotions often to others may actually make us feel worse, especially if we don’t find a way to comfort ourselves.
37 . This led to a movement to “let it all out”, with experts telling people to hit soft objects, like pillows, to release negative feelings. It turns out, however, that this type of emotional venting (发泄) likely doesn’t reduce anger. That’s because encouraging people to act out their anger makes them relive it in their bodies, making it easier to get angry next time. 38 .
Being selective when you vent your emotions is a good way. There’re many ways to deal with difficult emotions and not all of them involve other people. 39 , by writing your thoughts down or changing your environment to help you handle your emotions.
When you share your emotions with others, remind them to offer suggestions. Ask the person questions like “ 40 ” or “What should I do in this situation ” This will make them know that you’re looking for something more than a listening ear.
A. Does venting your feelings really help
B. How should I think about this differently
C. Actually sometimes you can find solutions on your own
D. We should of course seek support from those around us
E. But sharing covers many different modes of communication

Tom preferred to drive to work. One day his car broke down when he was ready to work. So he had to take a bus instead. The bus dropped him a few blocks away from his office, so he walked the rest of the way.
As he was nearing his office, he saw a man begging. He took out some coins to the man. “Hey, man. How are you today ” Tom asked. “Hello, sir. I’m doing alright, I guess,” the man replied, smiling at Tom. “I need to feed my kids. This is a huge help. Thank you so much.” Tom wished him good luck, and went on his way. He felt great about helping out. But he hoped there was more he could do for this poor man, although he himself wasn’t rich at all.
During the following days, Tom made it a point to give the man some money and bring him food when he passed by him.
Actually, the man, named Adam, begged to feed the many homeless dogs he had brought to his home. He had a job at night at a construction site. But the money he received there wasn’t enough for him to care for the dogs which he considered his kids, so he had to beg. However, Tom didn’t know about it.
Another day on his way to his office, Tom stopped at a newsstand in the street. And the owner asked him, “Why do you always give that man money ” Tom explained that man had to feed his family. “But that man doesn’t have a family or any kids,” the owner said in surprise, not knowing the truth.
Tom felt annoyed and walked away, thinking that man lied to him. He walked to where he knew the man was begging and met him. “I know you don’t have children. Stop lying to people. If you need a job, I can help you,” Tom said quickly. The man stood up and explained, “Sir, I’m not lying at all.” Hearing Adam’s words, Tom said, “Prove it.”

(Text 10)
Over the past 10 years, I have traveled to 84 countries on five continents. I selected 480 photos from thousands I took during my trips. They were displayed in an exhibition in Beijing from last December to this February as part of the Polaroid Traveler public project. I have spent four to five months each year traveling in other countries by myself or along with my friends. I planned to drive through South America last March. But due to the COVID-19, I had to postpone the plan.
A photo, a painting, a movie or a song may become my reason for traveling. For example, my longing to visit Ireland started after I heard songs of the Irish band U2 while in high school. I traveled to Dublin, the city which will always be at the heart of U2’s story.
In 2012, I traveled to Cuba. The Internet was not accessible. The buildings in Havana were mostly very old. However, it conveyed a cheerful atmosphere. There were lots of local people dancing and playing musical instruments in the streets at night, I stayed in a small house and the owner had a computer. He believed that the connection to the Internet would happen someday. I think one of the most rewarding things about traveling is that I can always see the world from a fresh eye.

The show is open to any student who is good at any type of Chinese culture art, such as Chinese painting, Beijing Opera and Chinese kung fu. Learning that you are interested in Chinese culture and skilled at paper-cutting, I think it’s a good chance to show your ability. If you are interested in what I have said above, sign up on our school website before September 19th.
I do hope you will accept my invitation. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,

第二节
One possible version:
Adam nodded, asking Tom to follow him to his house after work. Tom agreed without hesitation. On the way, he was doubtful and angry still. “We’re e in, please.” Adam said, pointing towards a worn-out house on an empty lot. After getting inside, Tom was surprised to see many dogs. They all gathered around Adam, happily dancing and barking. “I adopted these poor, homeless dogs. I consider them my kids,” Adam said. Then he explained why he had to beg for help.
Feeling sorry, Tom decided to do something to help Adam care for his dogs. He petted some dogs that approached him. He sat down with Adam and they talked further. Finally, Tom planned to take one dog home so he could care for it. Tom also began encouraging animal shelters and other people to help Adam and his dogs. Many people came with dog food, medicine and so on. Adam had a better housing situation with the help of others, and he continued helping homeless dogs, and Tom never judged another person without knowing the whole story ever again.
